Henry released; Cowboys poised to strike

The Cincinnati Bengals announced the release of wide receiver Chris Henry this morning. Henry, who served an eight-game suspension last season for violating the league's personal conduct policy, was in court today facing charges of assault and disorderly conduct stemming from an incident Monday.

"Chris Henry has forfeited his opportunity to pursue a career with the Bengals. His conduct can no longer be tolerated," team president Mike Brown said in a statement.

"The Bengals tried for an extended period of time to support Chris and his potentially bright career. We had hoped to guide him toward an appropriate standard of personal responsibility that this community would support and that would allow him to play in the NFL.

"We acknowledge those fans who had concerns about Chris; at the same time we tried to help a young man. But those efforts end today, as we move on with what is best for our team."

And there you have it. We're off and running on what should be another exciting offseason for the Bengals. It wouldn't surprise me if Roger Goodell suspends Henry for at least the 2008 season. I'm told that Jerry Jones has not contacted Henry's representatives -- yet.
