What will the Bills do?

My colleague Mike Sando pointed out a few minutes ago that the Bills often go against the grain, which is a nice way of saying they haven't drafted very well over the past five years. Obviously I'm focusing on the first round, but it's not like the Bills have done a great job of developing starters in the later rounds.

Most of us in the ever-growing mock draft industry have the Bills taking Michigan State wide receiver Devin Thomas at No. 11, but I don't think that's the wise choice. You don't draft project players at that point in the draft unless they're quarterbacks. Unlike Dwayne Bowe from last year's draft, Thomas won't have an immediate impact. The Bills need impact players. That's why they should take Florida defensive end Derrick Harvey if he's there.

I know the Bills' starting defensive ends, and both of them are high-motor guys. I also know that they're both relatively small and subject to being engulfed by some of the top offensive tackles. Harvey's the pick, but I fear the Bills are set on taking Thomas. Nice player, but too much of an unknown to go this early.

Dwayne Bowe, Derrick Harvey, NFL draft
