The Philadelphia Eagles have signed a free-agent defensive tackle to compete for an opening at fullback. When last heard from, 27-year-old Dan Klecko was catching a touchdown pass that helped the Colts advance to the Super Bowl.
Now, the Eagles have signed the 5-11, 275-pound former Temple star to a one-year contract. The club didn't try to re-sign starting fullback Thomas Tapeh, who ended up with the Vikings. I think it's a move they'll regret. Tailback Brian Westbrook is the most talented player on the team, but I think he'll miss Tapeh.
The Cowboys moved former North Carolina State linebacker Oliver Hoyte to fullback two seasons ago, but he didn't show enough consistency to stay on the roster. Klecko will have to lose at least 20 pounds to have any chance of becoming the starter.
Somehow I don't think this free-agent signing is what the receiver-starved Eagles' fans were looking for. By the way, I might have some news on the Anquan Boldin front soon. Stay tuned throughout the evening.
