The Tennessee Titans are in the process of trying to create a market for cornerback Pacman Jones. I've talked to a couple of starters recently who say they'd welcome him back to the locker room with open arms, but management wants no part of him.
When you see the hometown paper mention that Detroit, Oakland, Dallas, Kansas City, New England, Miami, Houston and New Orleans are all interested in Jones at some level, you know it's either coming from the Titans or Jones' agent. The Cowboys have conducted research on Jones, but it's a stretch to say they have a strong interest in the troubled player.
Pacman would actually be a bit player in the Cowboys' traveling circus, but at least one local columnist isn't thrilled with the idea. I'm a bit surprised that Jacques Taylor knew off the top of his head that there were 44 strip clubs in Dallas since I've always heard the No. 42.
But anyway, the Titans would like to scare up some interest in Pacman in case he somehow avoids another arrest and is reinstated before training camp. Perhaps his good friend and neighbor George "Possum" Jones can point him in the right direction in the coming days.
If Pacman's reinstated, some team will sign him to a low-risk offer. Do you really think owner Jerry Jones is worried about what this would do to his team's image? In Chicago, Tank "Shotgun" Johnson wasn't exactly a solid citizen. But in a locker room which T.O. and Tony Romo frequent, Johnson is just another guy.
Would the Patriots be interested in helping Pacman rehabilitate his reputation? Well, Mike Reiss doesn't think so. At this point, the Titans would be fortunate to land a fifth-round choice for Jones.
Any team that bites before he's released will look foolish. Now if you wait and sign him to a risk-free one-year contract once he's released, then it might be worth it. And who are we kidding? Even after the Goodell crackdown, character will only get you so far in this league.
