Texans land Cowboys CB

March 2, 2008 2:15 PM

The Texans signed former Cowboys cornerback Jacques Reeves to a five-year, $20 million contract Saturday, and he's expected to start immediately. Dunta Robinson could miss up to half the season with knee and hamstring injuries, so signing another corner was a major priority.

The Cowboys didn't attempt to re-sign Reeves, a seventh-round pick out of Purdue in 2004, despite the fact he started 13 games this past season. According to research by our friends at Footballoutsiders.com, Reeves was picked on more than any cornerback in football in 2007. But that shouldn't be interpreted as a major knock on Reeves.

Teams wanted to throw away from Terence Newman, and Reeves actually held up pretty well throughout the season. He finished with 60 tackles and one interception.

I covered him for three years in Dallas, and I don't think you can find a more unselfish player. He was also a special teams standout before he took on a larger role on defense.

The Cowboys will look to create depth behind Anthony Henry and Newman through the draft in April.

free agency, Jacques Reeves, Terence Newman
