The defending Super Bowl champions took a major hit on the first day of free agency, losing a starting safety and two starting linebackers. But don't expect GM Jerry Reese to panic. Why should he when he's coming off what may end up being one of the best drafts in franchise history?
The Giants lost linebackers Reggie Torbor (Dolphins) and Kawika Mitchell (Bills), but fortunately they have a lot of depth at that position.
Mathias Kiwanuka, who is returning from a broken leg, will take over on the strong side and Gerris Wilkinson will probably fill the weakside spot.
Wilkinson was a third-round pick out of Georgia Tech in 2006. He replaced Mitchell when he was injured in the regular-season finale against the Patriots and played pretty well.
The Giants will have a tougher time replacing safety Gibril Wilson, who signed a lucrative contract with the Raiders. At this point, it looks like 32-year-old Jaguars safety Sammy Knight is a possibility.
