The Dolphins' free-agent spending spree makes sense on the surface because the team hired a new coach and front office to overhaul the roster. But other teams in similar situations are operating differently.
Atlanta also has a new coach and new general manager. The Falcons, like the Dolphins, purged several veterans from the roster before free agency opened Friday. The Falcons, like the Dolphins, have an owner who's willing to spend. But one day into the signing period, the Dolphins are the only team with a new head coach who has reached an agreement with an unrestricted free agent from another team.
The other teams with new coaches -- Atlanta, Washington and Baltimore -- have spent the first 24 hours of free agency on the sideline. We should expect the Ravens to take that approach as long as Ozzie Newsome is general manager. But the Falcons and Redskins have been big spenders at times over the years. The Falcons in particular are looking to rework their roster, but they will apparently wait for the second wave of free agency and the draft.
