The Bengals expected acquisition of Shaun Rogers from Detroit gives them additional flexibility should they install a 3-4 defense for the 2008 season. Rogers' listed weight is 340 pounds. I would consider that a conservative estimate.

The Lions were unhappy with Rogers' weight and its impact on a knee injury, but Rogers started all 16 games last season. He played nearly two-thirds of the Lions' defensive snaps, about the same as Dewayne White and trailing only Cory Redding among Detroit's defensive linemen.

If the Bengals use a 3-4 defense, Rogers is the clear favorite to start at nose tackle. If they play a 4-3, he presumably starts in one of the interior spots. Domata Peko and John Thornton were the starters last season.

UPDATE: This reported trade, confirmed by the Lions earlier in the day, is apparently in jeopardy.

UPDATE 2: Rogers is reportedly headed to Cleveland.

Free agency, Bengals, Shaun Rogers
