Sizing up the Jags' receiving situation

The Jaguars' quest to upgrade at receiver is well founded. David Garrard has proven to be an efficient, smart, ascending quarterback who makes few mistakes and can lead a team in the playoffs. He finished last season with 18 touchdowns and three interceptions. Garrard benefits from a strong running game. Imagine what he could do with playmaking receivers.

Jerry Porter and Troy Williamson may or may not help in that regard, but at least the Jaguars are mixing up the rotation. Porter is obviously the key there.

Jacksonville will have nine receivers on its roster once Porter's deal becomes official. The Jags took 10 to camp last year: Ernest Wilford, Reggie Williams, Dennis Northcutt, D'Juan Woods, Roosevelt Kiser, John Broussard, Matt Jones, Mike Walker, Jimmy Farris and Charles Sharon.

Walker is coming off a knee injury that bothered him in college and again last season. He could figure into the mix for one of the top three spots, along with Porter and Reggie Williams.

Williamson was briefly with Jaguars assistant Mike Tice in Minnesota. The Jaguars aren't counting on him, but the price was right (a sixth-round choice) and Tice would no doubt like to see Williamson realize the potential he once saw in him. I would think Jacksonville would add a receiver in the draft.
