Redman has staying power

At least something positive came out of Bobby Petrino's disastrous tenure in Atlanta. The Falcons re-signed quarterback Chris Redman on Friday, meaning someone from Louisville will stay in Atlanta.

Redman had been out of the league and was selling insurance when Petrino got the Atlanta job last year. Petrino went out and signed Redman, whom he had coached at Louisville, and the move drew laughter around the league. But Redman played well enough in the preseason to stick with the team.

He got to start late in the season after Joey Harrington and Byron Leftwich had their turns. Redman wound up playing better than anyone expected and Petrino's escape to Arkansas didn't end the quarterback's career.

Redman's no long-term answer by any means. But he can be a serviceable backup. Right now, he and Harrington are Atlanta's quarterbacks and that duo's not real exciting. But, if the Falcons get Matt Ryan in the draft, they suddenly would have a decent trio of quarterbacks.

Chris Redman, Falcons, free agency
