Professorial Jauron assesses trepidation level

Buffalo's Dick Jauron would be my odds-on favorite to win a Wonderlic competition among NFL head coaches. The guy just became the first coach since Marv Levy to use the word "trepidation" properly and without effort. Jauron went with the blue fleece pullover, black slacks and laceless Merrell mocs that looked like an earlier version of these. He looked like a guy with a history degree from Yale, which he indeed possesses.

Jauron talked about making "very educated" guesses on NFL prospects. "As educated as you can get," was how he put it, and few can match the Bills in that department. Their offensive coordinator is the Stanford-educated Turk Schonert.

The trepidation stems from going into a season with so little experience in key spots. Schonert is a first-year coordinator. Trent Edwards is a second-year quarterback. Marshawn Lynch is a second-year running back. Jauron said he feels as though this is Schonert's time to emerge as a coordinator. He said Edwards and Lynch were better than the Bills expected.

Jauron said he didn't personally interview Edwards at the combine last year, more evidence that virtually no amount of preparation can take away the educated guesswork. A year ago, the Bills had no idea Edwards would become their quarterback of the future. Edwards, another Stanford product, appreciates the tremulous fear of Bills some fans, but the organization feels as though he's the man to lead them.
