My new colleague Pat Yasinskas caught up with former Eagles first-round draft choice Mike Mamula via phone yesterday. As many of you remember, Mamula, an undersized defensive end out of Boston College, dazzled scouts and coaches during the 1995 combine and made a dramatic move up draft boards.
Most of us remember him as a bust, so I was a little surprised to see that he had 31 1/2 sacks during five injury-shortened seasons. It's also surprising that he chose to remain in the Philadelphia area after receiving so much abuse there. A longtime scout told me that it was obvious from the start that Mamula had spent hundreds of hours on the specific drills used during the combine. You have to wonder why the Eagles never tried him at linebacker since he was such a great athlete.
In case you've never attended the NFL combine, here's a helpful Q&A from Mike Sando. Mike and I will be live-blogging the event from Indianapolis. If you live in the area, feel free to make some restaurant suggestions.
