Just had a great visit with NFL Films president Steve Sabol a few minutes ago. Sunday will mark his 42nd consecutive Super Bowl, and he still has 10 tickets left over from the first one.
Sabol said his father Ed, who lives in Scottsdale, handed him 12 tickets to Super Bowl I and sent him to the parking lot to sell them.
"The tickets were $8, $10 and $12," he said. "I was only able to sell two tickets for $6."
Sabol and his father filmed the game between the Packers and Chiefs from the top of the Los Angeles Coliseum press box. About an hour before the game, Steve remembers Steelers owner Art Rooney stopping by for a visit.
"He told us to put our isolation camera on [Packers receiver] Max McGee," said Sabol. "And of course we got that shot of McGee catching the first touchdown."
McGee, who had stayed out drinking until 7:30 a.m. the day of the game, finished with seven catches for 138 yards. Sabol said Rooney sat with him at the next five Super Bowls, but he guessed wrong on the isolation camera each time.
He also had a great story about playing six seasons for Colorado College, but we'll save that one for another time.
