Evening Hash: The Scott Drew Tribute Edition

January 24, 2008 7:54 PM

  • Peter Schmuck earns two demerits for taking a swipe at ESPN. In his column in today's Baltimore Sun, Schmuck discusses the NFL coaching carousel and how Rex Ryan was once again left at the altar.
  • David Steele says Cam Cameron wants to provide the Ravens with another Lemon at quarterback. Memo to Ravens media: Your guys are going to draft a quarterback in the first round and throw him in the fire. If Cleo Lemon sees the field in Baltimore next season, he better be wearing a different uniform.
  • Jeff Schultz of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution says the Falcons won't generate a lot of buzz with the hire of Mike Smith, but that may be a good thing.
  • Daniel Snyder doesn't have a head coach, but he made time Wednesday to interview Seattle quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn for the offensive coordinator position. This doesn't sound like good news for Al Saunders.
  • Mike Reiss talks to Doug Flutie about how successful the Patriots have been at adjusting on the fly.
  • Will Jeremy Shockey show up to support his teammates in Phoenix? We're not sure at this point, but at least he sent the team a congratulatory e-mail after the NFC Championship Game. Steve Serby of the New York Post is practically begging Shockey to show up in this column. And for goodness sakes, Jeremy. Clean out your voicemail, so Steve can reach you. That is so rude to keep him waiting like this.
  • Mike Lupica has a nice visit with Giants GM Jerry Reese, who's already tired of the underdog story line.
  • Joe Theismann tells the Boston Herald that Tom Brady injured the right ankle.
  • Shame on the Big 12 for not finding a way to put last night's Baylor-Texas A&M game on TV. And I don't want to hear about the career fair at Reed Arena on Tuesday. Unless you were like me and watched streaming video on CSTV, you probably missed Baylor's 116-110 victory over the No. 18 Aggies in five overtimes. Kudos to Andy Katz for calling Scott Drew's cellphone at 1 a.m. ET and banging out a quick column.

I logged on ESPN.com last night at about 12:45 ET, and the Baylor-Texas A&M story was receiving "Breaking News Alert" status on the home page. Trey Wingo (Class of '88?) and I will be hosting a Baylor Basketball party during Super Bowl week. Watch the special treatment Wingo receives in this segment with Karl Ravech and Fran Fraschilla. ESPN officials called this morning to apologize for leaving me off the list. (And yes, Vinnie Johnson's name is misspelled on the UPS Whiteboard).

Oh, and I've just asked ESPN Bracketologist Joe Lunardi to bump the No. 25-ranked Bears up to a No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament. I'm sure he'll be getting back to me soon. Have a nice evening.
