Tooth length a factor for Broncos

Broncos safety John Lynch is coming home to the San Diego area as the oldest starting defensive back in the NFL.

The Broncos will presumably try to get younger next season, particularly on defense, although coach Mike Shanahan said he expects Lynch to return.

Denver's starting defense is the NFL's eighth-oldest in terms of average age.
The Chargers' defense is the 19th-oldest.
Most of the older defenses play 3-4 schemes. Denver plays a 4-3.

The chart features age breakdowns for the Broncos and Chargers in relation to league averages. Higher numbers feature darker shading.

Denver has the oldest starting left tackle in the league (Matt Lepsis is slightly older than Seattle's Walter Jones).

The Chargers and Broncos feature unusually young starting centers. Denver lost veteran Tom Nalen to an injury suffered during a 41-3 loss to the Chargers earlier this season. Nalen somehow played the entire game despite suffering a torn biceps during the game. Chargers center Nick Hardwick missed some time with injury this season, but he's back -- and so is San Diego's ground game.
