Saints linebacker Scott Fujita said he spent part of Monday morning watching television coverage of Michael Vick's sentencing. He's a huge dog lover, but he tried to reserve judgment until Vick pleaded guilty of dogfighting charges in August.
"I was reluctant to say anything because I didn't like how Roger Goodell was ruling on guys before anything had been decided in a courtroom," he said. "But once he pleaded guilty, it was fair game. I don't know if 23 months is the right sentence, but you hope it opens some eyes to what's going on. It's an issue that really pisses me off."
Fujita owns a Beagle named KC, and he said he was stunned to hear from a teammate that Beagles were used "as bait" to prepare Pit Bulls for fights.
"I'm watching TV and I see that they recovered Beagles from Vick's property," he said. "Those are helpless animals. I'm not sure what they were using them for, but it really pissed me off to think of my dog being involved in something like that."
He was also angry after reading a USA Today column about the owners of Vick's former home at 1915 Moonlight Road turning it into somewhat of a tourist destination.
"You talk about some [expletive]," he said. "That's pretty pathetic."
