Shula's Not Backing Off Comments

Former Dolphins coach Don Shula isn't backing down from what he told Gary Myers in the New York Daily News yesterday.

Asked about the Patriots' film scandal, Shula told the Daily News, "I guess you got the same thing as putting an asterisk by Barry Bonds' home run record. I guess it will be noted that the Patriots were fined and a No.1 draft choice was taken away during that year of accomplishment. The sad thing is Tom Brady looks so good, it doesn't look like he needs any help."

Of course, that prompted every newspaper in South Florida to track Shula down Tuesday, and he told the Miami Herald pretty much the same thing.

It's important to note that Shula didn't advocate for an actual asterisk to be placed on the record. He was simply making an analogy, although it was a pretty ominous one.

Shula's earned the right to say whatever he wants, but comments like these coming from the '72 Dolphins are going to sound like sour grapes.

Every year, we read about members of that team gathering to drink champagne when the final unbeaten team loses. Some people think it's wrong to celebrate another team's failure, but what the Dolphins do isn't mean-spirited at all. It's a fun tradition, and it gives them an excuse to spend some time together each season.

Shula's comments, however, just provided the Patriots with one more reason to annihilate every team left on their schedule. The Steelers are the only team left that can stay on the field with the Patriots.

Pittsburgh's defense looked great against the Ravens on Monday, but that's not saying much considering Baltimore's offense continues to be pathetic.

The Patriots will deny it, but I think they would be devastated by a loss right now. A perfect season would be the ultimate "in-your-face" to the rest of the league, and at this point, the Colts remain the only team standing in the Patriots' way.
