The supplemental draft is underway, and I'm told the first round lasted at least 30 seconds. An AFC scout who worked out three of the 11 candidates just told me that, over the past 20 years, he's only recommended his club drafting two players in this midsummer classic.
"We have to look out for our jobs," he said. "And spending a third-round draft choice in the supplemental draft is a great way to lose it."
Len Pasquarelli wrote about the draft being a dicey proposition today. Yes, the Eagles landed future Hall of Famer Cris Carter in the fourth round of the 1987 supplemental draft, but you also have names such as Brian Bosworth and Timm Rosenbach. And I hope my friends from the University of Miami will notice I left another prominent name off the list.
The league will celebrate today's draft in a press release later today. OK, back to the phones.
