According to this report in The Kansas City Star, Pro Bowl running back Larry Johnson and the Chiefs may be close to reaching an agreement on a contract extension.
Chiefs GM Carl Peterson tried to temper the enthusiasm by saying he didn't believe a deal was imminent, but that's to be expected. He hates the thought of anyone thinking he caved in the negotiation process.
He'll secretly thank running back Priest Holmes for showing up to get underneath Johnson's skin, and provide him with some nice parting gifts. When Johnson finally reports, there will be no room for Holmes, who said he's still 10 days away from participating in contact drills.
The good news for Chiefs fans is that Johnson is the last guy who needed reps in training camp. The bad news? The damage may have already been done. Try to come up with a running back who hasn't had a significant decline after a 400-carry season.
I'll even spot you Eric Dickerson.
And yes, I'm handling the 4 a.m. feeding.
