They say "passer rating" and not "quarterback rating" for a reason. The league's formula for determining its leading passers takes into account things such as completion percentage, touchdowns, interceptions, etc. There is no component for leadership, rushing ability or other factors that can help a team win games. And yet passing numbers are important.
Will Joey Harrington represent an improvement in any way over Michael Vick? Can't say for sure, but some of the numbers suggest Harrington might complete a higher percentage of his passes while getting rid of the football to avoid sacks. He'll also need to avoid interceptions, one area Vick beats him by a wide margin.
They have played in a similar number of games with a similar number of starts. Vick has been surrounded by better talent most of the time. Harrington has a higher career completion percentage, more passing yards and more passing touchdowns. He also has about 400 additional attempts, and about 50 percent more interceptions.
Harrington wanted to sign with Seattle this offseason, but the Seahawks were committed to Seneca Wallace in the No. 2 role. Signing with the Falcons turned out to be the right move for his career, even though the circumstances are obviously less than ideal.
