DeShawn Beck (Jordan, Los Angeles): Eastern League Player of the Year shined even though his team was blanked by Narbonne of Harbor City, 33-0, in the first round of the CIFSS Div. I playoffs. In front of Washington's Steve Sarkisian and USC's Pete Carroll in a day game at Jordan, Beck completed 16 of 29 passes for 120 yards and rushed for another 120 yards. He even caught a pass for 10 yards. His final tally in 11 games was 1,166 yards passing and six touchdowns on 82 of 145 attempts. He also rushed for 2,031 yards on 172 carries to go along with nine touchdowns. He caught 14 passes for 181 yards and two more scores. As a kickoff returner, he averaged 29.4 yards per (14 returns for 412 yards). His all-purpose yardage (3,790) is the second-highest reported single-season total in city section history among backs with at least one reception and quarterbacks who rushed for over 1,000 yards. In 1976, junior quarterback Ron Cuccia of L.A. Wilson accounted for 4,360 yards, which was also his final total yardage tally. L.A. Jordan's James Boys holds that record (4,874) set last season. Sterling Bullard (Atascadero): Despite rushing for 220 yards, he was likely disappointed he found the end zone for just one score against Buena of Ventura, as the season came to an end for Atascadero with a 41-14 loss in a CIFSS Northern Division playoff opener. Antonio Bumpers (Inderkum, Sacramento): Once his time to shine in a playoff game finally arrived, after being a backup last year at Grant, Bumpers shined brightly as he scored five rushing touchdowns in a 47-7 win by the undefeated Tigers over Rodriguez of Cordelia in the Sac-Joaquin Section Div. III playoffs. Bumpers looked even better as a cornerback on defense, especially coming up to attack the run. &nb... Adkins passed for 369 yards and four touchdowns in his final high school game. Vince Buhagiar (Clayton Valley, Concord): Helped his team clinch a spot in the CIF North Coast Section playoffs by rushing for 165 yards and three TDs, picking off a pair of passes and ringing up 10 tackles. Jesse Callier (Warren, Downey): Outside of possibly Deonte Cooper from Perris Citrus Hill, is there a running back in the CIF Southern Section playing any better right now than Callier? He closed out the regular season with a 259-yard, four-touchdown rushing performance as the Bears defeated cross-town and archrival Downey High, 49-14, to clinch a second consecutive San Gabriel Valley League title. Callier finished the regular season with a reported 2,632 rushing yards and 38 touchdowns. Jake Cimolino (Fort Bragg): Out for a few games with a separated shoulder that supposedly was sidelining him for the season, Cimolino returned with a vengeance, rushing for 235 yards on 25 carries and all four touchdowns in a 28-7 win over Kelseyville. After a scoreless first half, Cimolino had touchdown runs of 88, 65, 10 and 39 yards. The victory helped the Timberwolves secure the seventh seed in the NCS Division IV playoffs Kaelin Clay (Poly, Long Beach): After a slow start to his senior campaign, Clay has picked up his game in recent weeks. In Poly's 42-14 victory over Compton that secured a post-season berth for the 30th consecutive season for the storied program, Clay came up with a ton of big plays in the first half before Poly controlled tempo with their running game in the second half. After Compton's first score, Clay returned a kickoff 95 yards for a score. He also scored on a 38-yard run and helped stretched Poly's lead on a 48-yard touchdown reception. In all, he has 212 all-purpose yards in the game's first 24 minutes as Poly built a comfortable 29-12 lead. &nb... Jerry Alvarez (Watsonville): The senior quarterback showed his being near the top of the CCS leader board as a dual threat quarterback are legit after he led the Wildcats to a 40-37 victory over a Seaside team that had tied Palma of Salinas. He only passed for 127 yards, but had three TDs. Alvarez also rushed for 107 yards and one TD, the game winner. On the season he's passed for 2,377 yards and 23 TDs and rushed for 477 yards and four scores. Michael Alexander (La Salle, Pasadena): Not only did he rush for 314 yards and five touchdowns, but he also returned a punt 94 yards for six points in a 45-35 win over Cantwell Sacred Heart of Montebello. Jamil Austin (Colony, Ontario): He wasted no time in scoring twice in the opening quarter of play for the 8-1 Titans in a 42-10 victory over Don Lugo of Chino. Bryan Bennett (Crespi, Encino): The hard-lucked Celts came into last Friday's contest sporting a .500 record, but a victory over undefeated and state-ranked Bishop Amat in a Serra League showdown wasn't all that shocking. Especially when the athletic Bennett performed as he did in Crespi's 38-25 win. He shredded the Amat secondary to the tune of 342 yards and three touchdowns on 22 of 30 pass attempts. Brendon Bigelow (Central, Fresno): In a 49-14 win over Clovis, Bigelow, who has lightning speed to burn, scored a career-high five touchdowns. He carried the ball only six times for 221 yards, but scored on runs of 67, 56, 5 and 91 yards and had two receptions for 77 yards, one for a 69-yard TD. In a 49-0 victory over Saugus that clinched a piece of the Foothill League title, Bishop completed 16 of 25 passes for 422 yards and three scores. Even more impressive than his single-game yardage total is his seasonal passing percentage. After nine games, the junior signal-caller has completed 126 of 169 passes for 2,390 yards. His completion percentage is a razor-like 74.6 percent and his percentage actually dropped this past week! His first big one was a 52-yard punt return for a TD that gave Amador Valley a 21-16 lead it never relinquished. Then, on the last play of the first half, he intercepted a pass. Bell finished with 349 all-purpose yards, including a 93-yard kickoff return He also rushed for three touchdowns and 186 yards on nine carries. Bryan Bennett (Crespi, Encino): Because of a good all-around performance by Bennett, it took a clutch 51-yard field goal by Notre Dame kicker Eric Solis to beat the hard-lucked Celts, 23-21. He passed for 302 yards and two touchdowns in a losing effort and hit pay dirt once on the ground. Bollar added a score on the ground as T.O. got off the snide with its first victory of the season. In a losing effort, Canyon sophomore Jonathan Jerozal threw for 336 yards and three touchdown passes, all to Shane Habberstad. Dionza Bradford (Serrano, Phelan): The UNLV-recruit finished with 200 yards rushing on just 11 carries and scored three touchdowns -- each touchdown was for more than 40 yards – in Serrano's 35-0 win against Highland of Palmdale.(Read full post) CA, football, stat stars, state record book, Jorrian Washington, Malcolm Thomas, James Nunley, Casey Nielsen, Colin Gault, Deion Bernard

After catching a 15-yard TD pass to boot, he now has nine total touchdowns (eight rushing) on the season. He wasn't too shabby on defense either, where he recorded nine tackles (two for loss) from his middle linebacker position. Eddie Aguayo (Justin-Siena, Napa): Although the Braves lost a wild one to Menlo School of Atherton, 48-39, Aguayo was sensational. As a passer, he completed 15 of 26 passes for 215 yards and two TDs. He also rushed for 207 yards on 10 carries and scored twice. Aguayo's 91-yard TD run was called "the best TD run I've ever seen” by veteran NorCal scribe Ted Sillanpaa who added: "He juked, outran or pulled away from virtually all 11 Menlo defenders on the run…..with him stumbling across the goal line completely spent. Amazing.” Jerry Alvarez & Oliver Fernandez (Watsonville): We missed the senior duo last week in a 27-20 victory over Santa Cruz. Quarterback Alvarez threw for 310 yards and two TDs, both to WR/DB Fernandez, who had 10 receptions for 217 yards and two touchdowns. Alvarez also ran for a score. Fernandez also had two interceptions and two passes broken up on defense. This week in a 43-23 storming of Aptos, Alvarez passed for 189 yards and two TDs and a two-point conversion and rushed for 97 yards on 10 carries, including a 19-yard scamper to pay dirt. DeShawn Beck (Jordan, Los Angeles): Although the Bulldogs lost to state No. 2 St. Bonaventure of Ventura, Beck had another standout game by accounting for 333 yards of total offense. Beck had 125 passing yards and 208 yards rushing on 16 carries with two touchdowns. Beck also handles punting duties and returns kicks for JoHi coach Elijah Asante. Sophomore Raymond Ford also had a shining moment with a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown. Cooper carries 59 times for state record September 21, 2009 8:41 PM Another Inland Empire running back breaks reported state record in category for most carries in a game. Feat will be permanently chronicled in the CalHiSports.com State Record Book & Almanac. For ordering info, call (800) 660-1334 Ext. 4431. If you love the content on our site, you'll love the book, so order your copy today. Forgive University of Washington commit Deontae Cooper from Citrus Hill High of Perris if he was too tired to celebrate that much on Saturday after his future team upset USC in its Pac-10 opener. On Friday night, Cooper, a 6-1, 185-pounder who was an all-state underclass selection last year, was handed the ball 59 times out of the 63 plays that Citrus Hill ran in its 30-20 triumph over Great Oak of Temecula. He piled up 412 yards on all those carries and scored four touchdowns as Citrus Hill extended the longest current winning streak in California with its 30th straight win. "He also played the entire game at cornerback,” said Michael Prosser, a coach at the school who assists head coach Doug Dubois. "He never fumbled the ball; he was a workhorse.” According to the CalHiSports.com State Record Book & Almanac, Cooper's 59 carries for a single game broke the previous state record of 57 carries set in 2005 by Chris Huerta from Notre Dame of Riverside when Notre Dame defeated Yucca Valley, 66-65, in one of the wildest games ever played in California. When Huerta carried it 57 times, he surpassed the previous record total of 55 that had stood up for nine years that was posted by Larry Ned from Rancho Verde of Moreno Valley. Ned, like Cooper and Huerta, was from the Inland Empire. His 55 carries came in a 45-38 win over Perris. Looking even deeper into the category, three others from the Inland Empire have carried the ball 54 times in a single game – David Dotson from Valley View of Moreno Valley in 1989, John Harris from Centennial of Corona in 1990 (obviously before Matt Logan arrived to coach the team) and Marquise Starks of Fontana in 1997. Cooper is no stranger to huge statistical totals, either. In helping Citrus Hill post its second straight 14-0 season as a junior, he rushed for 2,948 yards and scored 43 touchdowns. state records, Deontae Cooper, Citrus Hill, state record book, Larry Ned, football, CA
Oaks Christian wins for state, respect September 19, 2009 5:20 AM Lions complete journey to Northwest on Friday night with 28-25 win over Skyline of Sammamish, Wash., in nationally-televised matchup. They ended Skyline's 30-game win streak and beat a team that was No. 9 in the nation. But will it still be enough to quell the critics who say they don't play anyone? By Mark Tennis, Executive Editor SAMMAMISH, WASH. – Oaks Christian High's 28-25 win on Friday night over Skyline High of Sammamish is perhaps the biggest win by a California high school football team ever against a team from Washington. That claim is due to Washington teams owning a 10-6 record in games against California schools since 1911 and because none of the California teams had ever won before in a hyped up showdown on the road. Still, both Lions' coach Bill Redell and quarterback Nick Montana know that even beating a team like Skyline, which has won two straight Class 4A Washington state titles and had a 30-game win streak broken with two All-Americans in its lineup, won't be enough for some in the media who question whether the team should be No. 1 in the state (its current position in the CalHiSports.com rankings) or No. 6 in the nation, according to the ESPN RISE FAB 50. "A lot of people doubt us, but that is a great team we just beat,” Montana said. "They showed a lot of heart and made a lot of big plays. We did too and came out with a big win.” &nb... Kickoff 2009: State Stat Stars September 17, 2009 4:41 AM Since the 1980 season, when Cal-Hi Sports chronicled the feats of California prep standouts such as Santa Barbara's Randall Cunningham, Orange Glen's Sean Salisbury and Hayward's Jack Del Rio, it's been our duty and pleasure to profile the state's top individual performers on a weekly basis. This season, however, we're raising the bar a little higher. Since our exclusive state record book is getting so big (352 pages and counting) and the minimum cutoffs quite high to be included, we going to make sure we're profiling only the very best performances. Plus, we want to make finding your favorite player and following the other top performers easier and funner than ever. We might even throw in a "blast from the past" every once in a while. It's this kind of exclusive content and research that makes ESPN RISE CalHiSports.com the foremost authority of California prep sports. This is the 30th consecutive year we will publish this feature, starting back when many of the top performers' parents were not even in high school yet. (For additions, corrections or to report a statistical standout we may have missed, email mark@studentsports.com. To inquire about a section or state record, please email Senior Editor Ronnie Flores at ronnie@studentsports.com or call (800) 660-1334 Ext. 4414; For games played Sept. 10-12 with week zero performances included; Writeups by Paul Muyskens, Steve Brand, Mark Tennis, Ronnie Flores & Harold Abend. Please join our Facebook group by CLICKING HERE ) Chris Adams (Marin Catholic, Kentfield): For the second straight week it was the 5-10, 212-pound senior running back coming up big, only this time his team was victorious. After gaining 197 yards with three TDs in a season-opening heartbreaking 29-28 loss two weeks ago at St. Ignatius (San Francisco), Adams rushed for 287 yards on 26 carries with four touchdowns on runs of 10, three, two, and 13 yards in a 28-19 home victory against Las Lomas of Walnut Creek. He now has 484 yards and seven touchdowns in the season's first two games. Justin Alo (Carson): Accounted for six touchdowns in the Colts' 56-21 thrashing of A.B. Miller of Fontana. The junior signal-caller threw for 252 yards and five touchdown passes and added his sixth rushing. Scott Arellano (Santa Ynez): Averaged almost 10 yards per carry as he rushed for 230 yards on 24 carries to lead Santa Ynez to a 23-14 victory over Carpinteria. Jonathan Barnfather & Leonard Baker (Hueneme, Oxnard): Barnfather and Baker connected for three scores through the air as Barnfather totaled five touchdown passes in a 61-6 victory over Santa Clara of Oxnard. Baker also scored on an 89-yard kickoff return to open the second half. De'Shawn Beck (Jordan, Los Angeles): All-state do-it-all performer rushed for 273 yards and two touchdowns as JoHi defeated cross-town Locke, 25-0 in a non-league game. Beck can run the ball, but will spend a lot of time under center in Elijah Asante's "Attack the Weakness" offense. Mark Borland (Santa Teresa, San Jose): This big, bruising 6-0, 215-pound senior FB/LB has been getting it done on both sides of the ball for the 2-0 Saints. Besides being one of the top rushers in the CCS, he's the reported leading tackler in the section with 35 after two games. In an opening season 42-36 shootout win at home against Saratoga two weeks ago, Borland rushed for 201 yards with four TDs, caught two passes for 24 yards, and recorded 18 tackles. Last weekend in 38-7 easy win at Santa Clara, he had 17 tackles and a fumble recovery. &nb... BASEBALL Javier Carvajal (Freedom, Oakley): His mate Billy Wardell (whom you'll hear about later this week) did it on the mound and this No. 8 batter had the hot stick in the batter's box, as the Falcons won their 12th straight game with a 3-0 victory over De La Salle (Concord) in the NCS Div. I championship game at the Oakland Coliseum. The senior outfielder was 3-for-3 with a double, triple, RBI and run scored. His two-out double in the second inning knocked in the first and only run needed in the win. The NCS title was the first in any sport for the Oakley school's boys. Kevin Chambers (Capistrano Valley, Mission Viejo): Allowed only three hits, striking out nine, getting the first nine batters without a hit in the 11-0 CIFSS Div. I quarterfinal win over Marina of Huntington Beach. Patrick Christensen & Stephen Foster (La Jolla): Christensen hurled six innings without allowing an earned run while fanning 10 while Foster went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI in an 8-3 win over Valley Center in a CIFSDS Div. III play-in game. Joshua Drost (Horizon, San Diego): Drove in seven runs to lead the Panthers to a 20-2 rout of High Tech Academy (San Diego) in a CIFSDS Div. IV play-in game. Carlos Escobar Jr. (Chatsworth): In the LA City Section Div. I finals, at Dodger Stadium, the Chancellors' catcher was one hit a way from they cycle. He blasted a three run homer and scored three times in a 9-0 victory over Cleveland of Reseda that clinched Chatsworth's third straight L.A. City Section title. Mitchell Esser (Madison, San Diego): Went 5-for-5 at the plate with two triples and a double while scoring four times as the Warhawks spanked Tri-City Christian (Escondido), 16-1, in a CIFSDS Div. IV play-in game. He then went deep while going 3-for-5 in a second round 21-3 crushing of Bishop's (La Jolla). BASEBALL Jason Brady (Westmont, Campbell): Hit his sixth home run of the season last week and the final of his career in a 7-2 loss to Willow Glen (San Jose) in the CCS playoffs. Earlier in the week, Brady had two RBI, including the game-winner, in an 8-7 victory over St. Ignatius of San Francisco. Trent Brennenman (Linfield Christian, Temecula): The hurler struck out 10 and gave up only three hits in a 3-0 win over Bermuda Dunes Desert Hot Springs in the CIFSS Division V playoffs. Vince Bruno (Clayton Valley, Concord): Had the bat that propelled the Eagles into state top 20 this week, and into the NCS Division II title game this Saturday against Alameda at the Oakland Coliseum, with two doubles and three RBI in a 7-4 victory over Casa Grande of Petaluma. Zac Burlando (Clairemont, San Diego): The junior third baseman drove in six runs, half of them on a three-run homer, as the Chieftains downed Crawford of San Diego, 19-2. Joe Cantor (Foothills Christian, El Cajon): Clubbed two home runs while driving in six runs and scoring four as Foothills only took four innings to dispatch Calvary Christian of Chula Vista, 19-5. Christian Coronado & Spencer Cooper (Hemet): The two arms combined for a no hitter in an 8-0 win over Culver City in the CIFSS Div. III playoffs. Matt Daugherty (Temecula Valley, Temecula): In the 9-5 win over Esperanza of Anaheim in the CIFSS Div. I playoffs, Daugherty belted two homers, one of which was a grand slam. Anthony Diaz (Helix, La Mesa): Blasted a grand slam home run en route to driving in five runs and scoring two as the Scotties stopped Monte Vista (Spring Valley), 10-4, in Grossmont South play. David Del Grande (St. Bernard's, Eureka): Did it all in a 7-0 win over Fremont Christian in the CIFNCS postseason as he allowed just two hits and struck out 11 while going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and two RBI. Drew Dominique (St. Augustine, San Diego): Went a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and a home run as the Falcons edged Scripps Ranch of San Diego, 7-6, in an Eastern League game. Ben Doucette (El Segundo): Doucette collected four hits and drove in five in a 11-1 win over Don Lugo of Chino in the first round of the CIFSS Div. IV playoffs. BASEBALL Abi Arias (Menlo-Atherton, Atherton): In two losses to Peninsula power Aragon of San Mateo, the senior third sacker was 5-for-7 with six RBI and hit his sixth home run of the season. Jesse Arreola (Patriot, Riverside): Arreola threw a three hitter and struck out 13 in a 7-0 shutout over Summit of Fontana. Patriot also captured its fourth league crown with Arreola's win. Nick Backlund (Valley Christian, San Jose): The Warriors lost 15-11 in the WCAL championship slugfest to Serra, but this slugger did everything he could and has been doing it over the past few weeks as well. With his team trailing 7-5 in the third inning, Backlund smoked a rocket over the 402-foot sign in centerfield for a three run homer that gave the Warriors an 8-7 lead. The bomb was his 12th of the year and eighth in the past seven games, not including this week. Brett Bell & Stan Moody (Tomales): The NCS reported RBI leader with 48, Bell had seven in one game last week with two doubles and five runs scored in a shellacking of Santa Rosa Christian. BASEBALL Luis Acosta (Skyline, Oakland): Got the win on the mound and had two hits, an RBI and a run scored in the Titans' 15-6 win over second-place Oakland Section rival Oakland Tech. Gary Apelian (Esperanza, Anaheim): Apelian scattered five hits and hurled a complete game, shutting out Fountain Valley in a Sunset League contest, 5-0. Mark Appel (Monte Vista, Danville): Senior righthander threw a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts and two walks in a 17-0 blowout of Livermore. After that outing, the Stanford-bound hurler has a 1.04 ERA and has not given up an earned run in his last 20 innings. The performance earned him the San Francisco Chronicle Boys Athlete of the Week. Marcos Avendano (Castle Park, Chula Vista): The senior went 4-for-6 with a solo home run, double and five RBI in a 20-1 conquest of Mar Vista (Imperial Beach) in San Diego South Bay League play. Isaias Barba (Hawthorne): Barba went 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in five as the Cougars topped Inglewood, 13-3. Patrick Conroy (Drake, San Anselmo): Hit his 11th home run of the season and had five RBIs (37 this season) in a 14-6 victory over Tamalpais of Mill Valley. Earlier in the week, he pitched a three-hit shutout with seven Ks in a 3-0 win over Novato to improve to 9-3 this season. Christian Coronado (Hemet): He doesn't have a fat contract like former Vallejo standout and current Yankees pitcher C.C. Sabathia does, but this C.C. was money as he struck out 11 and walked none in a 5-3 win over Perris. Blake Davey (Newport Harbor, Newport Beach): Went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, including a home run, double and three RBI in a 13-5 upset of Edison (Huntington Beach). Michael Davis (Woodcrest Christian, Riverside): Davis went 3-for-3 and drove in four in a 10-5 win over Riverside Christian. Joey DeNato (Torrey Pines, San Diego): Whether on the mound or at the plate, the junior lefty was untouchable. BASEBALL Mark Appel (Monte Vista, Danville): We missed the Stanford-bound star two weeks ago but he had an exceptional outing against Tokay of Lodi in a 3-2 loss at Banner Island Park in Stockton. Appel and the other pitchers have been doing fine, but the Mustangs' hitting the last two weeks has been anemic. In the Tokay game, Appel pitched six innings with 11 strikeouts, no walks and one unearned run. He left the game with a 2-1 lead after scattering six hits and ended up taking a no decision after Tokay tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Mark has a 1.40 ERA for the season. Matt Brezinski (Sacred Heart Prep, Atherton): Pitched a three-hitter and had an RBI double to lead the Gators to their 10th straight win, a 3-0 victory over Mills of Millbrae. Cody Buckel (Royal, Simi Valley): Buckel went all the way and fanned 13 in a 4-0 win over Agoura of Agoura Hills. Lazaro Campos (Kennedy, Granada Hills): In an 18-0 win over Reseda, Campos hit an inside the park homer, added a double, a triple and drove in three. Jose Cardona (El Camino Real, Woodland Hills): Cardona struck out 12 and gave up only one hit in a 6-0 shutout over Granada Hills. Albert Carrillo (Santa Paula): Not only did he go 2-for-4 at the plate, but on the rubber he fanned 11 in a 6-0 win over Santa Clara of Oxnard. Christian Carter (Westview, San Diego): His two-run homer was part of five RBI on a 3-for-4 day as the Wolverines spanked San Marcos, 12-2, in SD Valley League play. John Combest (Huntington Beach): Although Northwood (Irvine) scored seven runs as a team, Combest drove in seven all by himself, slamming two home runs, as the Oilers rolled, 14-7. Saul Cuevas (Lindhurst, Olivehurst): Led the offense for the Blazers in their 15-5 road win at Golden Sierra of Garden Valley with a pair of homers and seven RBI. Devin De La Garza (McFarland): Led his team past Laton, 6-0, in a East Sierra League game as he pitched a seven-inning no-hitter with 15 strikeouts. Mitch Delfino (Cloverdale): This senior shortstop and right-handed pitcher has been on fire at the plate the past two weeks and likewise is pitching well. Last week in an 18-2 blowout of Lower Lake, he was 4-for-4 with two doubles, four RBI and two runs scored. Two weeks ago, he improved to 4-1 on the season when he struck out 15 and hit his fourth home run of this year in a 7-2 win against St. Helena. In four games the past two weeks, Delfino is 11-for-13 with a homer, six doubles, one triple, nine RBI and seven runs scored. Those numbers have propelled him top the top of the NCS in hitting with a .633 mark so far this season. Ricky Diaz (Tracy): Was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with his last hit coming in grand fashion. Diaz ended the game with a grand-slam homer in the bottom of the fifth inning in the Bulldogs' 13-1 win over Chavez of Stockton. Jake Etcheverry (Hughson): It's not quite a record in our newly updated state record book but it's impressive nonetheless as he went 4-for-5 with a grand slam homer and nine RBI as the Huskies scored 16 runs in the second inning of a 30-0 win over Riverbank.(Read full post) CA, baseball, softball, state record book, state records, Niki Zeibak, Tiffany Smith, Hayley Rodriguez, Jenna Martin, Jolene Henderson, Caity Carabello, Jesus Valdez, Nathan Plein, Eric Jaffe, Mitch Delfino

BASEBALL Pedro Adalpe (Montclair Prep, Van Nuys): In an 18-4 win over Cornerstone Christian of Texas, Adalpe went 3-for-3 with two homers six RBIs. Matt Brezinski & Erik Andrews (Sacred Heart Prep, Atherton): Senior infielder Brezinski had two home runs, a double and a triple with six RBIs in the Gators 9-5 win over Menlo-Atherton. He also hit his fifth homer and had two more RBIs in a 15-4 victory over Silver Creek of San Jose to give him a CCS leading 36 RBIs on the season. Andrews stroked his sixth home run in the Silver Creek victory. BASEBALL Isias Alcantar (Analy, Sebastopol): He missed the first five games of the baseball season as a point guard on the Tigers basketball team that made it all the way to the Northern Regional semifinals. Finally starting to round into shape, the shortstop and pitcher led the Tigers to the championship of the Al Rabinovitz tournament last week. In the championship game, a 10-2 victory over Montgomery (Santa Rosa), he went 4-for-4 and played a flawless shortstop. He also pitched six shutout innings against Maria Carrillo (Santa Rosa) in the tourney, allowing just two hits and striking out seven. He also drove in four runs in three games. For his efforts Alcantar was named the Santa Rosa Press Democrat Athlete of the Week. On the season Alcantar is hitting around .350. Junior Alvarez (Orange Cove): Set a personal high when he had five hits, including a double, and drove in three runs in a 18-5 win over Farmersville in an East Sierra League contest. Gary Apelian (Esperanza, Anaheim): Apelian proved the grand slam home run against Mamaroneck (N.Y.) a game earlier was no fluke as powered out another bases-loaded blast to lift the Aztecs to a 10-3 win over Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) in the Anaheim Lions Tournament quarterfinals. That grand slam against Mamaroneck was huge as the Aztecs won, 8-7. Nolan Arenado (El Toro): Just what the Chargers needed as Arenado tossed a complete game 2-1 victory over nationally-ranked Central (Palm Beach, Fla.) in the Anderson Bats National Classic. J.J. Baccari (Marina, Huntington Beach): Every time he hit the ball, it left the park as he bashed four home runs, scored five times and drove in nine runs in a 16-4 win over Fountain Valley. Corey Black (Mission Bay, San Diego): When a solo home run in the first inning wasn't enough, the Buccaneers senior ripped a three-run blast in the fourth to help deliver a 6-4 Western League win over Madison (San Diego). Ryan Boeger (Redlands East Valley): Boeger drove in five and hit a homer in a 12-2 win over Yucaipa. At the time Yucaipa was ranked No. 2 in the state. Matt Brezinski (Sacred Heart Prep, Atherton): Brezinski pitched five shutout innings, allowing three hits and four walks, while striking out nine to lead the host Gators to a 7-2 win over Sequoia of Redwood City. He also had a double, two singles and three RBIs. Earlier in the week, he hit his second home run of the season and finished the week's three games a combined 7-for-11 with six RBIs. Vince Bruno (Clayton Valley, Concord): This senior makes a second appearance in the feature after having two big games last week to help lead the CalHiSports.com Bay Area's No. 4 ranked Eagles to the championship in the Gordie Classic. In 12-2 and 12-5 semi and title games against Livermore and Irvington, respectively, Bruno was a combined 5-for-8 with a home run, double, three RBIs, three runs scored. In the opener against Pinole Valley two Saturday's ago, he has 3-for-4 with a homer, double and four RBIs and two runs. All told for four games it's a total of 8-for-12, two round-trippers, two doubles, seven RBIs, five runs and one walk as well. Bryan Crabb (Coronado): Crabb, a senior right-hander, blanked Palisades 1-0 on a 3-hitter, while striking out 14 in the 59th San Diego Lions Tournament. Patrick Conroy (Drake, San Anselmo): He's back for a second straight week and after what CalHiSports.com saw from him at the 12th Annual Adam Westcott Memorial Tournament at Casa Grande High, coupled with his current numbers, is any indication of the next season-and-a-half, we may see his name in a few more places. The lefthander pitched a complete game three-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts and hit his state leading 10th home run in leading Drake (13-5) to the tournament title with a 15-0 victory over Bishop O'Dowd of Oakland. The 6-2 junior also had an RBI double in the first inning, was 2-for-3, and reached base four times (error and hit by pitch). He finished with four RBIs and three runs scored. Earlier in the tournament, Conroy hit his ninth homer in an 11-6 loss to Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa. Eric Contreras (Pacifica, Oxnard): Contreras went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs as Pacifica topped Channel Islands, 6-3. Ian Delgado (El Modena, Orange): Powered out two home runs and doubled, collecting four RBI, in an 11-7 win over Palos Verdes (Palos Verdes Estates) at the Orange County Tournament. Myles Dempsey (Patrick Henry, San Diego): The senior shortstop went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI as the Patriots grilled Granada Hills, 15-3, in a San Diego Lions Tournament game. We've just printed our seventh edition and if you love the content on our site, you'll love the book, so order your copy today. BASEBALL Miguel Acosta (Skyline, Oakland): Former major-leaguer, current television color man and Titans coach Bip Roberts has a solid player in this senior. Against McClymonds in a 13-1 victory last week, Acosta was a one man wrecking crew. At the plate, he was 4-for-5 with a home run, double, four RBIs and two runs scored. He also pitched a complete game four-hitter with 16 strikeouts. Christian Belleque (Fullerton): The junior right-hander collected 9 strikeouts in five innings as the Indians used three homers in the first inning to pummel La Habra, 10-1, in a Freeway League showdown. John Bowling (Lincoln, Stockton): Was told he'd get the nod on the mound just before the game started and his coach is probably more than thrilled he made the move as Bowling gave himself an early cushion with a three-run homer. On the mound, he struck out eight and didn't allow a hit in a 6-0 Trojans win over Tracy. Vince Bruno & Johnny Bekakis (Clayton Valley, Concord): The two biggest guns on the 10-1 Eagles, whose only loss is to state-ranked Monte Vista (Danville), are 6-foot senior Bruno and 6-foot junior Bekakis. Bruno has at least one hit in every game so far. He was "only” 4-for-8 in his last two games with three RBIs. We say only because Bruno is tearing it up at a .575 clip with 23 hits in 45 appearances with a homer, seven doubles, 18 RBIs and 13 runs scored. Bekakis is hitting .516 and was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored in the Eagles' 17-7 victory last week over College Park of Pleasant Hill. ... Shane Cabral & James Bowan (Maxwell): Runs rained in as heavy as the rain from the sky on Saturday as they each hit grand slams in a 22-10 win over Wheatland in the championship game of the Maxwell Invitational. Matt Davis (Taft): Pitched a no-hitter with seven strike-outs, allowed only one walk in a seven inning South Sequoia League 8-0 victory over Shafter. Left-fielder Jonathan Guzman made a divining catch in the sixth inning to preserve the no-hitter. Dylan Floro (Buchach Colony, Atwater): The Cal St. Fullerton bound senior struck out 12 in five innings and may have had even more if he didn't also drive in three runs to help end the game early. Buchach Colony won in five innings, 10-0, over Turlock. Ron Galosic (San Pedro): Another Pirate made stat stars this week, as Galosic collected four hits and drove in four in a 19-3 win over Bellflower. Kurt Heyer (Edison, Huntington Beach): After being staked to a 6-0 lead in the first inning, the righty allowed just five hits, striking out seven, as the Chargers beat Esperanza (Anaheim), 11-0, in the Sunset League opener. Heyer retired 9 of the first 11 and pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth. Parker Hipp (Cathedral Catholic, San Diego): Hipp, who directed the Dons to the state Division II football championship as a quarterback, is a sure-handed second baseman who went 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBI in a 14-6 win over Poway in the Hilltop Tournament (Chula Vista) championship. Football teammate Tyler Gaffney, California's Mr. Football State Player of the Year, added a 2-run single during an 8-0 first inning in which Cathedral sent 14 batters to the plate, taking advantage of four hit-batsmen and three walks. K.C. Hobson (Stockdale, Bakersfield): Showed why he's got scouts showing up for his games, as he tossed a five inning perfect game with 13 strikeouts in a 17-0 win over Highland. Check out the permanent links on this site to secure your copy today. | Anthony Hutting (Tesoro, Las Flores): One home run in high school baseball is pretty special but two shows some real muscle as Hutting sent two out of the park in leading the Titans to an 11-8 slugfest win over Mission Viejo in South Coast League play. Jake Jelmini (Mira Costa, Manhattan Beach): Jelmini collected three hits and drove in four runs in the Mustangs' 9-7 win over Palisades. Jacob Johnson (San Pedro): The Pirates just topped Kennedy 9-8 and Johnson was a big part of the win. He tripled, homered, drove in two runs and scored three times. Felix Juarez (Poly, Sun Valley): The Parrot hurler tossed a five-inning no-hitter with eight strikeouts in a 24-0 shutout over Canoga Park. Will Kollmeyer (Torrance): The Tartar scored three times and swiped four bags in a 13-6 Torrance win over host Ventura. Gabriel & Jose Lopez (Paramount): The Lopez brothers led the way in a 12-3 win over Downey. Gabriel, a senior, hit a two run bomb and drove in four total, while younger brother Jose, a sophomore, tripled, scored three times and drove in four. Tyler Matzek (Capistrano Valley, San Juan Capistrano): Rated by most veteran baseball observers as a certain first-round draft pick this June, the 6-foot-3 lefty's stock did better than most on Wall St. as he fired a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over Aliso Niguel, ranked No. 9 by the Orange County Register, in a South Coast League game. Conor Meredith (Grossmont, La Mesa): Meredith guided the Foothillers to the Foothiller-Aztec Classic title with a 6-0 win over Montgomery (Chula Vista). Meredith was 5-for-7 with a .714 slugging percentage as he collected a home run, a double, drove in six runs and scored three. Seth Moranda (Buchanan, Clovis): Pitched a perfect game in seven innings with 12 strikeouts in a 2-0 win over Madera in a Tri-River Athletic League game. A.J. Leighton Pangilinan (Escalon): To say he was seeing the ball well off of Hughson pitcher Archie Quay's hand might be an understatement as he hit three two-run homers off the hurler in a 8-0 win. Mike Polley (Frontier, Bakersfield): Polley had a big day against Highland in a lopsided win, 23-2, in the Tailgatters Classic. He went 3 for 4 at the plate and batted in five RBIs and teammate Luc Pomales went 3 for 4 and added four RBIs. Pomales continued his hot streak the next day against Garces in a 16-6 win by batting in eight runs on three hits, which included two doubles and a home run. Zach Roberson (Summerville): In a football-like final score of 21-14 over Amador, the Bears scored at least two runs in every inning led by Roberson. He went 6-for-6 with two doubles, a homer, and eight RBI. Will Swanner (La Costa Canyon, Carlsbad): Collected three hits-two of them home runs-driving in three runs and crossing the plate three times himself to lead the Mavericks to a 10-0 rout of Scripps Ranch in the championship of the Pirate-Falcon Classic in Oceanside. Philip Valos (Stockdale, Bakersfield): Struck out 13 batters in a 7-0 win over Foothill for his third straight shutout performance on the mound. Ronnie Ybarra (Riverdale): This junior is the thief of the week as he stole six bases in six attempts and went 2-3 at the plate against Strathmore 9-1 in a non-league victory. SOFTBALL Naomi Amu (El Camino, Oceanside): In a rematch of last year's San Diego Section Division I playoffs, Amu was too tough for the Mavericks as she went 2-for-4, both hits being doubles and resulting in three RBI, in a 6-2 win in the North County Tournament championship. She also pitched the final 2 2/3 innings to wrap up the victory. B.B. Bates (Victor Valley, Victorville): Bates hit two home runs in the first inning of a 10-2 win over Serrano. She finished the game three for three with five RBIs. Amanda Baun (ML King, Riverside): In a 5-0 win over Fontana, Amanda Baun recorded 13 strikeouts and allowed only one walk. Caitlin Brooks (Escalon): Was close to perfection but after allowing a walk with two outs in the sixth inning she went back to work as the sophomore captured her third no-hitter of the season in the Cougars 9-0 win over Riverbank. Cassidy Coleman (Horizon, San Diego): Just a junior, Coleman tossed four shutouts, including three on Saturday, leading the Panthers to the Friar Classic championship. In the 6-0 win over Monte Vista (Spring Valley) for the title, she struck out 18. Kailee Cuico (San Pedro): She has been a force on the mound. Shelby Hoffman (Serrano, Phelan): Hoffman pitched a shutout and went two for three at the plate for Serrano of Phelan in a 4-0 win over Victor Valley. Vaneza Hoover (Ceres): Did it all to earn the win as she struck out 16 and allowed just two hits to pick up the shutout win while also providing her own run support with a two-run homer. Bailie Kirker (Crescenta Valley, La Crescenta): For the second time in a three game span, Kirker hit three home runs in a single game in a 19-0 win over Hoover. Unlike last time when they were all solo shots she had plenty of Falcon runners on base as she finished with ten RBI on the 5-for-5 night at the plate. Danielle L'Argent (Clovis): L'Argent batted in five RBIs on a home run and a double against Davis-Modesto and won 11-0. She added two more hits in the second game of a double-header, which Clovis also won 9-2. Mary Lee (Torrey Pines, San Diego): Just a sophomore, Lee, a third baseman, went 8-for-10 in three North County Tournament victories, topped by a 3-for-3 performance against Vista. Brittany Schutte & Brianne Matthews (Mater Dei, Santa Ana): Schutte, the Monarchs catcher, was unstoppable, going 4-for-4 and driving in three runs as Mater Dei routed Foothill of Tustin, 10-0, in the Round Table Invitational. Matthews, a freshman pitcher, was the beneficiary of the 10-run output as she allowed just one hit and fanned eight in the game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule. Matthews also doubled in two runs. Jordan Stanaland (Lindhurst): Junior hurler fanned 20 during an eight inning affair against Lassen. The game ended in a 1-1 tie as Lassen's only score came on an unearned run. Three nights later, she did just as well at the plate, going 4 for 5, with a triple, while also striking out 10 batters in a 22-3 win over San Juan of Citrus Heights. Andrick, just a sophomore, would finish the week two walks shy of a perfect game, as he had to be more than happy with a no-hitter in a 10-0 win over Burton. Evan Norton (Arroyo Grande): Norton went 4 for 4, added a trio of stolen bases and three runs in a 15-1 drubbing of Santa Maria. Aaron Roth (Santa Clara, Oxnard): Roth went the distance and struck out 11, but took the loss in a 1-0 game against Cornerstone Christian. Jimmy Sherfy (Newbury Park): Sherfy threw a gem in a 1-0 win over Burbank, surrendering only one hit and fanning 13. Stephen Takahashi (Palos Verdes, Palos Verdes Estates): Takahashi collected four hits, including a double, scored three runs and drove in two RBIs, as the Sea Kings topped South Torrance 20-9 in the Gold Division championship of the El Segundo Tournament. Joey Torres (Loara, Anaheim): Torres helped lead his team to its first Loara Tournament Title since 1987, as he went 4 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored in a 6-1 win over Cypress. SOFTBALL Kayla Alfaqir (Rialto, Carter): The hurler lead the way in a 12-0 shutout of Apple Valley Granite Hills. In her first pitching appearance, she threw a two-hit shutout and recorded 10Ks. At the plate she went three for three with a double, homerun and four RBI. Lauren Bair (Golden West, Visalia): Blair had six RBI's on 3-4 hitting, including a home run as Golden West edge Clovis West, 10-8, in a non-league game. Caitlin Brooks (Escalon): Tossed three no-hitters in a four game span for the Cougars with a one-hit performance against Ripon Christian. Struck out 17 against Calaveras and Ripon Christian before recording a season-best 18 strikeouts against Placer of Auburn. Ally Carda (Pleasant Grove): After starting the season two weeks ago with a seven inning perfect game that saw her strike out 20 batters, she followed that up with another 41 innings of impressive pitching last week. Carda allowed just four hits in the 41 innings while striking out 92. Despite her still 0.00 ERA and throwing her first of two no-hitters in a row, she suffered her first loss with an unearned run. Tiffany Friel (Colusa): Just a sophomore, she struck out a season-high 19 and didn't walk a batter as the Redskins defeated Hamilton 2-0 in seven innings. Teagan Gerhart (Norco): Gerhart pitched a one-hitter in the opening round of the Bullhead Tournament in Ariz. She also recorded 14Ks in the 2-0 win over Chapparral High School out of Scottsdale, Ariz. In the semis, Gerhart threw another shutout and hit a homerun in a 4-0 win over Los Alamitos. Helena Harrity (Hesperia Christian): Harrity went five for five with a triple in an 11-0 win over Desert Christian Bermuda Dunes. In a 12-3 win over Mesa Grande Academy this weekend, Harrity went three for five with four RBI and a double in non-league play. Jolene Henderson (Sheldon, Sacramento): Is one of the main reasons the Huskies start out the season as the ESPN RISE No. 1 ranked team in the nation. She out-dueled Freedom's Hannah Williams allowing just one hit and striking out 20 in the Huskies' 11-inning 1-0 victory. Julia Howell (Calvary, Murieta): Howell hit a game-winning, two-run homerun for Calvary Murrieta in the seventh inning to put the team to stay, 2-1, over Menifee Heritage. Lauren Hynes (Torrey Pines): The freshman left-handed pitcher threw a no-hitter against Steele Canyon in a 7-0 win. Her next game in the circle, she came in relief for three innings in a 5-4 win over Rancho Bernardo, earning a save. At the plate Hynes is batting .375 for Torrey Pines. Sophia Perez (Simi Valley): Perez threw a 1-0 shutout against Royal in the Suzanne Manlet Invitational championship game. She allowed only three hits and struck out 12 in the game. In a previous tournament game, she pitched another 1-0 shutout in eight innings against Pacifica. For her efforts, she was named the MVP of the tournament. Natalee Pulver (Etiwanda, Rancho Cucamonga): The junior tossed a 3-0 shutout against Glendora in the finals of the San Dimas Softball Tournament. She hadn't given up a run in three games as of the tournament's conclusion. Kathryn Rabak (Bear River): The Bruins' senior catcher was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, a homer, and seven RBI in a 17-0 mercy rule win over Foresthill. Jessica Shults (Hart, Newhall): Shults homered in the semifinal and final game of the Hart Classic Tournament, where she was named co-MVP. Earlier in the week, the catcher went four for four with a homerun and three RBI in a 17-2 win over Moorpark. Haley Steele (Poway, San Diego): Had a good week at the plate going one for two with a solo homerun in a 8-6 win over Torrey Pines and then batting one for three with an RBI in a 3-1 win over Granite Hills. In the Cougar Classic Steele, Steele went one for three in a 2-0 win over Point Loma before going two for four with three RBI and a three-run homerun in the Cougar's Classic Gold Division championship game. They beat Mt. Carmel in the title game, 5-0. Cecy Torres (Firebaugh): Struck out 17 and allowed just one hit as the Eagles defeated Lathon, 1-0. She improved to 4-0 with no earned runs and has allowed just five hits this season in 21 innings pitched. Carissa Truijillo (Edison, Fresno): The junior knocked in six RBI's, which included two homers, as the Tigers pounded Shafter, 20-0, in the Bakersfield Tournament. Darlena White (Lower Lake): Went a perfect 4-for-4 with two triples, seven RBIs, and three runs scored in the Trojans' 14-10 win over Geyserville. She then went 4-for-5 with another triple and six RBI in an even higher scoring 15-12 win over Pierce of Arbuckle. State Stat Stars of the Week March 12, 2009 2:27 PM (For additions, corrections or to report a statistical standout we may have missed, email mark@studentsports.com. To inquire about a section or state record, please email Senior Editor Ronnie Flores at ronnie@studentsports.com or call (800) 660-1334 Ext. 4414; For games played between March 2-7; Does not include many of the performances in section title games that were already mentioned in weekend coverage on this site; Writeups by Ronnie Flores, Harold Abend, Steve Brand, Tom Shanahan, Mark Tennis & Bob Barnett) BOYS BASKETBALL Andrew Bock (Eisenhower, Rialto): The Creighton-bound senior erupted for 27 points in the second half after scoring just two before intermission to lead the Eagles to a 79-73 victory over taller Loyola of Los Angeles in the CIFSS II-A title game at the Honda Center. Anthony Brown, Avery Johnson & Mason Jones (Ocean View, Huntington Beach): The trio combined for 59 points as Ocean View downed Inglewood, 76-47, in the CIFSS IV-A title game. Brown (21 points, 11 rebounds) and Johnson (22 points, five blocks) are juniors. Jabari Brown (Salesian, Richmond): Last year's freshman scoring phenom is developing a more well-rounded game as a sophomore but that doesn't mean he can't score when needed. In a 68-51 NCS Div. IV semifinal victory over Arcata, the 6-3 guard had a game-high 23 points. In the final, a 63-55 victory over arch-rival St. Mary's of Berkeley, he was one of three double-figure scorers with a non-flashy 14 points, but he played lockdown defense. Stephon Carter (Garces, Bakersfield): Called the best player in the Central Section by section historian Bob Barnett, Carter led his team to a Division II section championship last Friday evening by scoring 33 points and grabbing 19 rebounds. Ryan Bush chipped in 23 points against Liberty of Bakersfield as Garces won by 91-78. Liberty beat Garces three times during the regular season. In the semifinals, Carter scored 30 points at Lemoore to lead the Rams to a 92-81 win. Carter will end his four-year career by scoring over 2,600 points, the second most section history. Miles Cartwright (Loyola, Los Angeles): Despite the 6-3 junior scoring a game-high 32 points to keep the Cubs close, Eisenhower of Rialto pulled out the 79-73 victory in the CIFSS II-A championship game. Chen Cai (Maranatha Christian, San Diego): The 6-8 sophomore by way of China poured in 28 points in a CIFSDS semifinal win over Calvin Christian of Escondido. He then added 19 points and eight boards in the 60-56 loss to Foothills in the Division V title game. Angelo Chol (Hoover, San Diego): Totally frustrated Oceanside inside with 11 blocked shots, bringing his season total to 332 – just two shy of the reported state record set by Darnell Robinson of Emeryville in 1992, as the Cardinals routed the Pirates, 64-42, in the CIFSDS Division II title game. Earlier in the week, the sophomore had 15 points, 16 rebounds and 13 blocks in a 76-35 semifinal win over El Capitan of Lakeside. Max Fujii (Analy, Sebastopol): Fujii has literally exploded on the scene, much like the volcano in Japan that has a similar name. CalHiSports.com was on hand for his and his Tiger mates opening round NorCal Div. III match-up at home against Burlingame on Tuesday, but even before that Fujii was already named the San Francisco Chronicle Boys Athlete of the week. After scoring 16 points in a 66-63 upset of Bishop O'Dowd of Oakland in the NCS D3 semis, the 5-foot-8 sophomore led Analy to a 76-73 overtime win against Miramonte-Orinda and its first-ever North Coast Section boys basketball championship. Fujii scored 17 of his game-high 32 points after the end of the third quarter, when Analy trailed 54-44. He hit four three-pointers in the fourth quarter, including one with 5.1 seconds remaining that tied the game 69-69, and then hit another at 1:28 in overtime that gave Analy the lead for good. Against Burlingame it looked like Mr. Kibosh was working his voodoo. Fujii didn't score in the first quarter and the Tigers trailed 13-8. He didn't score until the final buzzer of the first half that gave Analy a 24-19 lead. He wasn't feeling the mojo in the second half when he scored 18 of his game-high 20 points in the last two periods, including 16 in the fourth quarter to lead Analy to a 60-50 victory. Down the stretch his 8 for 8 from the free-throw line were Analy's only points in the final minute of play. Marcus Hall (Bakersfield Christian): Senior guard scored a season high of 36 points in the Central Section Div. IV final game as BC downed Kingsburg, 81-55. Hall set a new school record by scoring over 1,800 points. Senior Colby Herron of Bakersfield Christian scored a season high of 32 points against Corcoran in a semifinal Division IV playoff game that Bakersfield Christian won by 73-48. Colby has scored over 1,100 points in his career. James Johnson (Valley Center): Scoring 30 points is one thing but when you score 30 and the rest of the team can only score 14, it shows the 6-3 wide receiver in football can be double- and triple-teamed and still produce. Despite his performance, the Jaguars' season ended with a 50-44 loss to eventual San Diego Section Division III champion La Jolla. Troy Leaf (Foothills Christian, El Cajon): Just a junior, the 6-3 guard helped Foothills defend the San Diego Section Division V title by scoring 28 points in the semifinals against The Rock Academy of San Diego in a 78-65 victory followed by 19 in the 60-56 win over Maranatha Christian of San Diego in the title game. Kawhi Leonard (Martin Luther King, Riverside): Swooped down 20 rebounds, blocked six shots, chipped in 11 points and nullified the Wear twins inside, leading the Wolves to a huge 71-56 win over previously unbeaten and national No. 1 Mater Dei of Santa Ana in the CIFSS I-AA title game. The still-growing Leonard has a smooth jumper, but has expanded his game inside because of his Connie Hawkins-like arms and hands. Chris Manresa (Tesoro, Las Flores): The 6-8 center scored 21 points, had 10 rebounds and six blocked shots to lead the Titans to their first section basketball title with a 63-57 victory over Ventura in the CIFSS I-A championship. Jamal McClerkin (Price, Los Angeles): Down by 19, the Eagles rallied to force overtime before pulling away behind McClerkin's 33 points in the CIFSS IV-A title game win over Chaminade of West Hills, 79-69. Ivan "BJ” Prema (Eastside Prep, Palo Alto): BJ led the way with a double-double 22 pints and 11 rebounds as Eastside Prep defeated Woodside Priory of Woodside, 47-42, for its seventh CCS D5 title and first since 2005. Yuhki Sakai (Lowell, San Francisco): This 6-3 senior forward doesn't have to hang his head after ending his career at the San Francisco school known for its high academic standards. Last week against cross-town Marshall, Sakai was 8 for 10 from beyond the arch, finishing with 35 points and seven rebounds to lead his team to a 56-44 SF Section semifinal victory. Two nights after he torched Marshall, he had 14 points to help Lowell win its fourth section title in six years. On Monday, Sakai scored 12 of his game-high 22 points in the first quarter as the Cardinals jumped out to a 20-4 lead and held on for a 57-45 victory over Salinas in a NorCal Division I play-in game at Kezar Pavilion. He only had a team-high eight points in a 61-33 loss to top-seed Monte Vista, but the fact Sakai and his mates were in the game is an accomplishment. John Sykes (Golden Valley, Merced): The 6-5 senior netted 26 points and had 10 rebounds and six assists to lead the Cougars past Sheldon of Sacramento, 69-65, in the Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I quarterfinals. Sheldon is the team led by highly-regarded sophomores Darius Nelson and Ramone Eaton. In this game, though, the senior Sykes was the top player on the floor. Golden Valley's playoff run ended two nights later with a loss to Franklin of Elk Grove. Will Tashman (Menlo School, Atherton): The 6-7 senior dominated the paint with a double-double and game-highs of 21 points and 16 rebounds to lead the top-seeded Knights to their second straight CCs Division IV title in a 61-42 victory over nearby Sacred Heart Prep. GIRLS BASKETBALL Camille Buckley (Colony, Ontario): Headed for Loyola Marymount, the 6-2 center poured in 30 points and dragged down 19 rebounds in a 76-59 win over Canyon Springs of Moreno Valley in the CIFSS Div. I-A championship at Mater Dei High. Darshae Burnside & Layshia Clarendon (Cajon, San Bernardino): The Cowgirls showed they could step up a division as the two were omnipresent in a 52-44 win over Poly of Long Beach in the CIFSS I-AA championship. Burnside collared 17 rebounds and Clarendon chipped in 28 points. This victory solidified Burnside and Clarendon as one of the state's best ever inside-outside duos and we've said it before and will say it again, how in the world is Clarendon not one of the California players that will participate in the McDonald's All-American Game? Alisha Eckberg (Canyon Crest, San Diego): Saving her best for last, Eckberg tossed in 31 points to lead the Ravens past Our Lady of Peace in the San Diego Section Division III title game. Earlier in the week, the San Jose State recruit scored 28 in a 71-60 upset of Cathedral Catholic of San Diego. Kelsey Harris (Brea Olinda, Brea): With six long-range three-pointers as part of a 22-point performance, Harris led the Ladycats to a 62-40 romp over Edison of Huntington Beach in the CIFSS II-AA championship. Eilise O'Conner (St. Ignatius, San Francisco): The junior guard scored 14 of her game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter as the third-seeded Wildcats pulled off a minor upset in a 57-48 victory over second-seed Valley Christian in the CCS Div. III semis. Kimmie Fung (Mercy, San Francisco): We missed her last week but the 5-7 junior ad 27 and 22 points respectively in CCS Div. IV playoff victories over Scott's Valley and Menlo School of Atherton. Sara James (Oak Ridge, El Dorado Hills): She's been a big-time player in all of Oak Ridge's most important games this season and had another solid outing with 26 points and nine rebounds as the Trojans downed Valley of Sacramento, 72-28, in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Div. II championship. Oak Ridge had lost in its two previous trips to the final and with James back for next year the Trojans should be a favorite once again. Victoria Lippert (Cathedral Catholic, San Diego): The school that produced the state Division II football titlists also has a pretty good basketball player as the Harvard-bound Lippert scored 33 points, but couldn't get enough help in a season-ending 71-60 loss to Canyon Crest of San Diego. Christina Marinacci (Foothill, Tustin): It seemed whatever the Knights needed, the USC-bound senior provided, scoring 25 points, collecting 15 rebounds, blocking five shots and stealing the ball three times as Foothill won the CIFSS III-A title in a 50-46 victory over Inglewood. Teammate Makenzie Hirz added a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double. Katie McGrath (Hesperia Christian): McGrath was a force on the boards with 15 rebounds but the Patriots were smothered in every other area, 62-36, by Sierra Canyon in the CIFSS VI-AA final as big-game jitters led to 30 turnovers. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (Mater Dei, Santa Ana): A game of 28 points would be considered pretty good this time of year, but the super sophomore had that many at the break and went on to score 41 without playing in the fourth quarter of the Monarchs' 81-42 win over Beverly Hills in the CIFSS II-A title game. Freshman Jordan Adams was credited with 10 assists for the Monarchs. Lewis, despite her tenth-grade status, is also a serious Ms. Basketball candidate. Jhazmine Lynch (Mater Dei, Chula Vista): Lynch kept the Crusaders close throughout against Bishop's in the San Diego Division IV title game by scoring a team-high 22 points, but it wasn't enough as the Knights prevailed, 71-63. Inga Orekhova & Gizelle Studevent (Bishop's, La Jolla): After Orekhova poured through 32 points in an 81-38 semifinal rout of Santa Fe Christian of Solana Beach, she added 23 to go with Studevent's 25 as the Knights topped state-ranked Mater Dei of Chula Vista 71-63 in the CIFSDS Division IV championships. Rachael Pecota (Urban, San Francisco): Had a double-double 28 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Blues in a 51-47 NCS Div. V semifinal win over St. Joseph-Notre Dame of Alameda. In the final against Branson of Ross, the 6-foot Rhode Island bound Pecota had 19 points and nine rebounds but got little help as Urban was swamped, 55-34. Ashley Ward (Woodbridge, Irvine): When Marlborough of Los Angeles proved a little more challenging than many thought, Ward stepped up by scoring 11 of her game-high 33 in the fourth quarter as the Warriors prevailed 62-57 in the CIFSS III-AA championship. Ally Warson (Branson, Ross): She was a star on the soccer field before she warmed up to the hardwood, but now the smooth play of this guard couldn't be blossoming at a better time for the Bulls in their drive for a state title D5 three-peat. The junior lefty scored 24 points, including 12 in the first quarter, as the two-time defending state champions won their fifth straight NCS Division V title at Redwood High in a 55-34 dismantling of Urban of San Francisco. CA, basketball, state record book, state records, Angelo Chol, Stephon Carter, Andrew Bock, James Johnson, Kelsey Harris
State Stat Stars of the Week March 5, 2009 4:18 PM (For additions, corrections or to report a statistical standout we may have missed, email mark@studentsports.com. To inquire about a section or state record, please email Senior Editor Ronnie Flores at ronnie@studentsports.com or call (800) 660-1334 Ext. 4414; For games played between Feb. 23-28; Writeups by Ronnie Flores, Harold Abend, Steve Brand, Tom Shanahan, Mark Tennis & Bob Barnett) BOYS BASKETBALL Maverick Ahanmisi (Golden Valley, Santa Clarita): The Grizzlies needed every one of Ahanmisi's 41 points when they faced a determined Foothill (Tustin) team in the CIFSS III-A playoffs. Ahanmisi's Grizzlies prevailed, 75-72. Greg Brown & Nefi Perdomo (Skyline, Oakland): Brown had team-highs of 27 points and 14 rebounds, but it was Perdomo's three-point shot with 35 seconds left in overtime (nine points in OT) that helped the Titans hang on for a 67-66 victory over Castlemont in the semifinals of the Oakland Section championships at Laney College. Jordan Burris (Stockdale, Bakersfield): Despite scoring 32 points for the Mustangs against Buchanan, odds are he was disappointed in his shooting from the free throw line as he made just five of 11 attempts in Stockdale's 66-63 loss. Stephon Carter (Garces, Bakersfield): Made sure his senior season on the court wasn't coming to a finish yet as he scored 36 points in the Rams' 68-56 win over Monache of Porterville in the CIF Central Section Div. II playoffs. Miles Cartwright & Carl Hoffman (Loyola, Los Angeles): These two Cubs combined for 51 points with Cartwright's 27 leading the way in an 88-74 CIFSS II-A quarterfinal win over Simi Valley. Angelo Chol (Hoover, San Diego): With 10 blocked shots in two games, Chol moved over 300 for the season and at 308, stands just 26 shy of the reported state record. The 6-9 sophomore opened the week with a 21-point, 12 rebound effort against West Hills of Santee before scoring 14 and getting 15 boards against Point Loma of San Diego in the San Diego Section Division II playoffs. Justin Cobbs (Bishop Montgomery, Torrance): All-state candidate burned the nets for 47 points, 15 coming on five long-range threes, but Inglewood prevailed 97-93 in overtime in a CIFSS IV-AA game spiced by controversy surrounding the official scorekeeping. The Minnesota-bound Cobbs was also 14-for-16 from the foul line. Unfortunately, his team lost, 97-93 in OT to Inglewood in the CIF-SS Division IV-AA semis. Earlier, he scored 23 in a 58-53 win over Atascadero. Calen Coleman (Liberty, Bakersfield): Top-notch junior scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in helping his team beat Garces Memorial for the third time this season and for Liberty's first ever SEYL title. Calen followed that up with 20 points and 12 rebounds in the season's final league game against Foothill. Then in Liberty's first-ever second-round playoff game vs. Tulare, Calen led his team to victory with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Liberty has been ranked all year in the Division II state rankings. Carl Cooper & Jordan Smalley (Lutheran, La Verne): The two combined for 43 points with Cooper's 23 leading the way as Lutheran downed CAMS, 70-46, in CIFSS V-A play. Earlier, Smalley tossed down 28 points and collected 12 boards as Lutheran downed Faith Baptist of Canoga Park, 75-41. Tyler Cross (The Rock Academy, San Diego): Just a sophomore, Cross tossed in 27 points in a 76-36 rout of San Diego Academy in which a running clock was used in the fourth quarter of the San Diego Section Division V playoff game. Victor Dean (Lincoln, San Diego): Watch out for the 6-5 Dean as he stepped up his game in leading the Hornets to back-to-back wins in the San Diego Section Division II playoffs. His 27 points led a 91-32 crushing of host Southwest of El Centro and his 21 were a major part of the surprisingly easy 65-36 win over perennial playoff power Helix of La Mesa. Lucas Devenny (Piner, Santa Rosa): The 6-9, 250-pound UC Santa Barbara-bound post had 22 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocks to lead the Prospectors into the NCS Division III semis after a 54-34 victory over Terra Linda of San Rafael. Luke Evans (El Camino, Oceanside): With games of 28 points against Escondido in an 83-60 win and 21 versus Mira Mesa in a 56-45 victory, the 6-8 center helped drive the Wildcats into the San Diego Section Division I semifinals. Ricky Fausset (Ventura): Burying five three-pointers en route to a 21-point game, including 12 points in a key third quarter surge, helped Ventura advance with a 64-48 CIFSS I-A quarterfinal win over Paloma Valley of Menifee. Gary Franklin (Mater Dei, Santa Ana): Just when it seemed Etiwanda of Rancho Cucamonga was going to take charge, Franklin took Tyler Lamb's blocked shot and buried a three-pointer to swing the momentum back to the unbeaten Monarchs in the 70-60 CIFSS I-AA semifinal win. Franklin finished with a game-high 21 points. Dashawn Gomez (Inglewood): The linchpin of the Sentinels attack finished with 35 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in a 97-93 overtime victory over Bishop Montgomery of Torrance that propels Inglewood into the CIF-SS Division IV-AA championship game against Ocean View. Center Wesley White had 21 points and eight rebounds in the victory. A.J. Harris, Morningside (Inglewood): Harris was on, scoring 24 points, collecting seven assists and grabbing six steals as Morningside advanced in the CIFSS V-AA playoffs with a 76-67 win over Calvary Chapel of Downey. Allan Huddleston (Merced): Continues to make sure he stays among the top of the state scoring stats as he scored 34 points in the Bears' come from behind 74-70 win over Nevada Union in the Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I playoffs. Devyn Iglehart (Horizon, San Diego): The Panthers, perennial state playoff participants, advanced to the section Div. IV semifinals as Iglehart tossed in 29 points in a 74-64 victory over Calipatria. Garrett Johnson (Diamond Ranch, Pomona): It was a bitter-sweet night for Johnson who scored 25 points but missed a pair of late free throws as Diamond Ranch was upset by Gahr of Cerritos, 63-62, in the CIFSS III-A quarters. Gahr's Devon Golston scored 22 in the win. James Johnson (Valley Center): The all-state football player who is going to Washington poured in 32 points to help the Jaguars overcome Brawley, 67-55, in San Diego Division III playoff action. He came back with 15 more in a 57-54 quarterfinal win over Kearny of San Diego. Jeremiah Kreisberg (Head-Royce, Oakland): This 6-9 junior came up big once again in leading the Jayhawks to a 60-57 victory over University (San Francisco) in the NCS Division V quarterfinals. He finished with 25 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks. Of his total points 13 were in the pivotal fourth quarter, including 5 of 6 from the free-throw line. Troy Leaf (Foothills, El Cajon): Leaf's 29 points, combined with J'Vonte Brooks' 22, helped Foothills roll past Christian Life of Escondido 91-30 in the San Diego Section Div. V quarterfinals. Marquise Lee (Serra, Gardena): Triple-doubles are rare come playoff time but Lee got one when he scored 14 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and had 10 steals to lead the Cavaliers to a 60-50 CIFSS V-AA win over Centennial of Compton. Robbie Lemons (Sacramento Country Day): Had back-to-back 31 point games last week for the Cavaliers as they defeated Brookside Christian, 67-66, before losing to Sacramento Waldorf 82-68 to end their season. Kawhi Leonard (Martin Luther King, Riverside): The 6-7, 215-pound senior hammered home 31 points to lead the defensive-minded Wolves to a 76-70 win over Dominguez of Compton in the CIFSS I-AA semis. Teammate Tony Snell added 22 and Chris Harriel 11. Earlier Leonard scored 27 points and had 16 rebounds in teaming with Harriel (20 points) to keep Redlands at bay, 82-62. San Diego State got an absolute steal in Leonard. Malik Love (Bishop's, San Diego): One of the top juniors in the state, Love hit for 28 points as the Knights rolled over Imperial, 60-47, in the San Diego Div. IV quarterfinals. Gipson Lyles & Davon Potts (Gahr, Cerritos): This duo was mainly responsible for a 96-87 victory over Golden Valley of Santa Clarita in the CIF-SS Division III-A semifinals that propels the at large Gladiators into the title game. Senior 6-5 forward Lyles had 31 points and sophomore guard Potts had 26 points including 11 free throws in the pivotal fourth quarter. Chris Manresa (Tesoro, Las Flores): Double-doubles are commonplace for Manresa as he led the Titans into the CIFSS I-A championships with two of them. First he scored 21 and collected 17 rebounds in a 75-61 win over West Valley of Hemet and then tossed down 20 points with another 11 boards in a 62-58 thriller over Santa Monica. Jamal McClerkin (Chaminade, West Hills): The Eagles guard helped lead his Cinderella story-type team to its first title game in 10 years with 23 points and 13 rebounds in a 59-47 Div. IV-A semifinal victory against Oaks Christian of Westlake Village at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. Fouad Mosleh (Chowchilla): Helped the No. 11-seeded Redskins upset No. 6 Immanuel of Reedley in the Central Section Div. IV playoffs as he scored 28 points and helped them rally from six points down entering the final quarter to pick up the 69-57 win. Dominique O'Connor (Westchester, Los Angeles): Assists are rarely appreciated but when you have 12 of them as O'Connor did in the Comets' 75-35 rout of Fremont (Los Angeles) in the City quarterfinals, it's hard to miss. He added a dozen points, too. Alex Osbourne (Pacific Hills, Los Angeles): The 6-7 senior showed why he was last year's CIFSS V-AA Player of the Year as he scored 20 of his 31 points in the second half to lead the Bruins to an 83-81 win over Woodcrest Christian of Riverside. Brandon Ralls (Castlemont, Oakland): Had a game-high 29 points but his team lost, 67-66, in overtime to Skyline in Oakland Section semifinal action. Deon Randall (Francis Parker, San Diego): A true multi-sport standout, Randall's 29 points led the Lancers past Coronado in overtime, 59-53, in the San Diego Section Division IV playoffs. Ryan Richardson (Clear Lake): This 6-3 multi-sport athlete (football, baseball) earned the Santa Rosa Press Democrat Boys athlete of the week after going for 29 points in an NCS Division IV playoff loss to Fortuna. Robbie Rowland (Cloverdale): This 6-6 junior continues to pile up the numbers as the Eagles advanced to the NCS Division V semifinals. Last week he was 13 of 19 from the field and 11 of 14 from the charity stripe and finished with 38 points and 19 rebounds in a 62-44 win over Drew of San Francisco. Then he came back with 29 points and 15 rebounds in a 63-52 quarterfinal win over College Prep. Rowland scored 17 in the first quarter and had a double-double by halftime. He now gets to take his 25.7 PPG and 14.3 RPG averages against St. Joseph Notre Dame of Alameda in the semis. Michael Snaer (Rancho Verde, Moreno Valley): The next stop for Snaer will be Florida State after his 31 points were enough to help his team scare FAB 50 No. 1 Mater Dei of Santa Ana, but not enough to win the CIFSS I-AA game, 72-65. Snaer will get acclimated with Florida next month as he'll participate in the prestigious McDonald's All-American game in Miami. Noah Springwater (University, San Francisco): This 6-2 sophomore sharpshooter did everything he could to help his team come from 12 down in the final 2:07 of an NCS D5 60-57 playoff loss to Head-Royce of Oakland. First he converted a three-point play, 14 seconds later he hit an NBA-length three-pointer followed by one from the same spot 41 seconds after the first one. Finally, he converted a rebound and a put back in the final moments for the Red Devils' final points. The end result was a game-high 26 points with 4 of 7 from behind the arc. Anthony Stover (Windward, Los Angeles): The 6-10 center was reported with 25 points, 15 rebounds and 20 blocks in last Friday night's 79-46 CIFSS playoff win over Buckley of Sherman Oaks. We verified Stover's blocked shots total with head coach Miguel Villegas, who stated that the UCLA-bound big man definitely had "19 or 20 blocks" and that the reported number is definitely not exaggerated. If the higher total is confirmed via videotape, it would tie the reported state single-game record of 20 first set in 1975 by Dan Ross of Lindsay and tied in 2004 by David Ellis from Capital Christian of Sacramento. "It was unbelievable to see," Villegas said. "He was blocking everything, it was like a spider up there. He was trapping everything in his web." Steven Thornton (Golden Valley, Santa Clarita): Although Thornton tossed in 41 points, the Grizzlies came up short in a 96-87 loss to Gahr of Cerritos in the CIFSS III-A playoffs. Jeremy Tyler (San Diego): When the Cavers' 6-11 center had to sit out the second quarter with three fouls, San Diego fell behind Eastlake of Chula Vista, 33-19. He came back to lead the Cavers to a 58-56 victory with 26 points. Derrick Williams (La Mirada): Former CalHiSports.com State Boys athlete of the Week ended his career in fine fashion despite his team falling 80-60 in the Southern Section Division II-A semifinals to Loyola of Las Angeles. The USC-bound senior finished with 30 points and 15 rebounds in his final high school game. Jameal York (Edison, Fresno): Scored a game high 30 points for the Tigers as they picked up a Central Section Division I 69-65 victory over Clovis West. GIRLS BASKETBALL Michelle Baerg (Calvin Christian, Escondido): When Calvin needed points, they turned to the senior Baerg who tossed in 27 in a 53-24 win over Lutheran in the San Diego Section Division V quarterfinals. Kody Burke (Notre Dame, Sherman Oaks): The Lady Knights star had a game-high 23 points (eight in the fourth quarter - and seven blocks) including a lay-up off a steal with 4.7 seconds left to seal a 55-53 victory over Bishop Montgomery of Torrance Saturday night at Redondo High. The win avenges two lopsided regular-season losses to Bishop Montgomery and sends Notre Dame into the Southern Section Div. IV-AA finals. Darshae Burnside & Layshia Clarendon (Cajon, San Bernardino): Burnside controlled the boards with 18 rebounds to go with 15 points as the Cowgirls raced past Perris, 66-32, in the CIFSS I-AA semis. Clarendon scored 37 points in a 70-45 rout of Lynwood, then came back with 19 against Perris. Camille Buckley (Colony, Ontario): Scoring 27 points and collecting 11 boards before fouling out with 2:12 remaining, Buckley made sure the Titans had a big enough lead to hold off Ayala of Chino Hills in the CIFSS I-A semifinals, 68-59. Kody Burke (Notre Dame, Sherman Oaks): When the 6-1 junior stepped up and blocked seven Bishop Montgomery (Torrance) shots, not to mention scoring 23 points, it allowed Notre Dame to prevail in the CIFSS IV-AA semifinals, 55-53. Haley Bush (Chadwick, Palos Verdes): Pulled down 15 rebounds and scored 14 points but Chadwick was eliminated from the CIFSS V-A playoffs by No. 1 Bellarmine-Jefferson of Burbank, 68-42. Jenna Caruso (Mission College Prep, San Luis Obispo): The final two of her 18 points proved the difference as Caruso buried a pair of free throws with 4.5 seconds remaining to deliver a 51-50 win over Bakersfield Christian in the CIF Central Section Div. IV quarterfinals. Tayler Champion (Inglewood): Sentinels post had 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead the team to victory, 71-23 over Rosemead in the CIF Southern Section Division III-A playoffs. Raeshel Contreras & Destinee Martel (Encinal, Alameda): Two days after attending the funeral of assistant coach and team mentor Ken Babers, who died Feb. 15 of a heart attack at age 34, Contreras, Martel and their teammates went out and played with emotion and like true champions in a 71-51 victory over Tamalpais (Mill Valley) in an NCS D3 quarterfinal. With CalHiSports.com in the house, the 5-7 Jet junior point guard Contreras finished with 29 points, and added eight rebounds, six assists and four steals. Senior forward Martel had a double-double 22 points and 13 rebounds and 6-1 junior Janis Peterson, Babers adopted daughter, chipped in with 15 points and seven rebounds. Raechelle Davis (Orangewood Academy, Garden Grove): Powered her way to 37 points and 20 rebounds as the Spartans romped over Pacific Christian of Santa Monica, 66-49, in a CIFSS III-AA quarterfinal win. Maggie Doremus (Mt. Carmel, San Diego): When the Sundevils got into a shootout with Ramona in the CIFSDS Division II playoffs, Doremus torched the Bulldogs for 30 points in a 79-72 quarterfinal playoff. Ashley Duffy (El Capitan, Lakeside): San Diego State signee stepped up her game with 27 points but it wasn't enough as Westview of San Diego used balanced scoring to oust the Vaqueros from the San Diego Section playoffs, 50-39. Alisha Eckberg (Canyon Crest, San Diego): There were those who felt perennial playoff power Santana of Santee had too much experience for Canyon Crest, but the San Jose State-bound Eckberg scored 29 points to lead a 69-38 thrashing in San Diego Section Division III action. Kayla Froehlich-Williams (Wilton Christian): Scored enough points by herself for the Patriots to defeat Foresthill in the Sac-Joaquin Section Div. V playoffs as she finished with 29 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in a 58-11 win. Stephanie Golden (Miramonte, Orinda): In a season that saw her former high school and club coach Darrell Hirashima pass away, Golden stayed strong, right up to her final game of this campaign. The 6-3 junior post scored 30 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, including 18 points and eight rebounds in the second half. Unfortunately, the Matadores season is over after a 71-63 loss to Campolindo of Moraga in the NCS D3 playoffs. Lauren Goode (Argonaut, Jackson): Had her best game of the season in a 67-51 win over Encina of Sacramento as she scored 31 points and had 17 rebounds, only to top it the next time out with 34 points and 19 rebounds in a 75-47 win over Le Grand. Justine Hartman & Kendall Rodriguez (Brea Olinda, Brea): Hartman's 23 points led the way as the Lady Cats rolled over Thousand Oaks, 79-43, to a showdown with Edison of Huntington Beach in the CIFSS II-AA championships. Earlier in the week, she tossed in 20 in a 82-43 win over Valencia. Rodriguez' 18 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists stood out against Valencia and she came back with 17 points against Thousand Oaks. Gina Henderson (Monrovia): Just a freshman, Henderson exploded for 38 points in a futile effort to overcome highly-rated Foothill of Tustin in the CIFSS III-A semifinals. The Wildcats succumbed, 78-69. Ebone Henry (Mater Dei, Chula Vista): Although the state-ranked Crusaders often have different players as their leading scorer, Henry has been a constant for the past few weeks as she scored 27 in a 71-41 San Diego Section Division IV quarterfinal win over Horizon of San Diego. Cynthia Hernandez & Dajyanah Vines (Santa Clara, Oxnard): Hernandez, a ninth-grader, scored a game-high 18 points to lead Santa Clara to its 20th straight win, 53-39, over Montclair Prep in the CIFSS V-A semifinals. Teammate Vines chipped in 16 points and 11 rebounds against Montclair after scoring 28 points on 13 of 19 shooting and grabbing 11 rebounds in a 64-59 win over Pasadena Poly. Nicole Hung (Harvard-Westlake, Sherman Oaks): Helped her team move into its first championship game appearance since 2001 after scoring a game-high 26 points in a 67-54 Division IV-A semifinal victory over Windward of Los Angeles at Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks. Ashley King (Kearny, San Diego): Although the junior rolled up 28 points, the Komets were taken out of the San Diego Section Div. III playoffs by balanced Mar Vista of Imperial Beach, 74-55. Victoria Lippert (Cathedral Catholic, San Diego): Headed to Harvard, Lippert's 27 points led three Dons players with 20 or more in a 79-48 win over Valley Center in the San Diego Section quarterfinals. She also had 23 in a 67-37 win over San Marcos. Christina Marinacci (Foothill, Tustin): Makes her usual weekly appearance for a remarkable 33-point, 20-rebound effort in a 78-69 win over Monrovia in the CIFSS III-A semifinals. The USC-bound Marinacci got scoring support from MacKenzie Hinz (24) and UC Davis signee Blair Shinoda (13). Ariel Marsh (Ayala, Chino Hills): Led the Bulldogs back from a 14-point deficit by scoring 17 of her 27 points in the fourth quarter. but it wasn't enough as Colony of Ontario prevailed 68-59 in a CIFSS I-A semifinal game. Freshman Jillian Alleyone added 17 points for the Bulldogs. Justina Muratalla (Mendota): Her 32 points wasn't enough to lead the No. 14 seed Aztecs to an upset over Kingsburg in the Central Section playoffs as they fell by a 66-54 final score. Yvonte Neal (Eastlake, Chula Vista): The 5-2 Neal motored her way to 25 points in a 65-50 victory over Patrick Henry of San Diego in the second round of the San Diego Section Div. I playoffs. She also helped hold normally high-scoring Emily Osga to just 17. Earlier in the week, her 21 points was team-high in a 77-56 win over Rancho Bernardo. Tre'Shonti Nottingham & Amber Smith (Canyon Springs, Moreno Valley): The two combined for 34 points to offset the 28 points from Santa Monica's Thea Lemberger in a 50-48 CIFSS I-A semifinal victory. Earlier, Nottingham scored 28 points in a 65-50 win over Great Oaks of Temecula. Niveen Rasheed (Monte Vista, Danville): The bus driver bringing visiting Logan of Union City was headed to Monta Vista in Cupertino so the game started late when the Colts finally arrived. No matter to this prima ballerina, who incorporates ballet and dance into her basketball game. The 6-foot Princeton-bound guard/forward proceeded to score 24 points with 11 rebounds and six assists in a 60-24 lopsided victory. Bria Richardson & Megan Wright (Serra, Gardena): Richardson's 26 points allowed Serra to keep St. Bonaventure of Ventura at arms-length in the CIFSS V-A semifinals in a 73-55 victory. Richardson also drew the fifth foul on high-scoring Erica Whitley (20 points, 10 boards) to secure the win. Wright's 27 points led Serra past La Salle of Pasadena earlier in the week as Richardson added 18 points and 10 boards. Bonnie Samuelson (Edison, Huntington Beach): Was the cornerstone for the Chargers as she scored 26 points in a 65-55 win over host Centennial of Corona in a CIFSS II-AA quarterfinal showdown. DeNesha Stallworth (Pinole Valley, Pinole): The state's leading scorer at 28.4 PPG according to Maxpreps.com was at it again last week in leading the Spartans to the NCS Division II semifinals. For the third time this year she went over the 40-point mark as the 6-3 Cal-bound post and former CalHiSports.com State Girls Athlete of the Week finished with a triple-double 43 points, 12 rebounds and 10 blocked shots in a 64-48 victory over Heritage of Brentwood. She's also averaging over 11 rebounds and three blocks per contest. Kiyana Stamps & Natasha Bradley (Perris): With Stamps leading the way with 24 points and Bradley controlling the boards with 16 rebounds, Perris handed coach Marvin Williams his 400th win in a 63-51 victory over Millikan of Long Beach) in the CIFSS I-AA quarterfinals. Annie Ward (Campolindo, Moraga): This sophomore guard turned in the biggest performance of her short career with 24 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals to lead Coach Clay Kallam's Cougars into their first NCS semifinal since 1999. Danisha Williamson (Mount Miguel, Spring Valley): Bound for the University of San Diego, Williamson's 25 points helped propel the Matadors to a 65-35 quarterfinal Division II win over dangerous Scripps Ranch of San Diego. She pitched in 27 earlier in the week in an 85-17 win over San Ysidro of Chula Vista. State Stat Stars of the Week February 12, 2009 6:37 PM (For additions, corrections or to report a statistical standout we may have missed, email mark@studentsports.com. To inquire about a section or state record, please email Senior Editor Ronnie Flores at ronnie@studentsports.com or call (800) 660-1334 Ext. 4414; For games played between Feb. 2-7; Writeups by Ronnie Flores, Harold Abend, Steve Brand, Tom Shanahan, Mark Tennis & Bob Barnett) BOYS BASKETBALL Maverick Ahanmisi & Trevor Wiseman (Golden Valley, Santa Clarita): In addition to having a stylish first name, Ahanmisi tossed in 31 points to team with Wiseman, who set a school record with 18 boards, in an 85-76 Foothill League win over Saugus. Jose Arreloa (McFarland): He scored 34 points against Laton with McFarland winning by the score of 71-51 in an East Sierra League game. Christopher Bearden (Sonora, La Habra): The 6-foot senior guard had 28 points and 15 rebounds, but the Raiders went scoreless in overtime, falling to Colony, 68-60 in the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei. Gaellan Bewernick (Manuel Arts, Los Angeles): Playing for a school with a storied tradition from decades past this 6-6 senior has been rolling along at a 25.3 PPG and 17.5 RPG average, with a double-double in all 28 games even though the team is only 12-16. Last week in a 73-53 victory over View Park Prep, he went for 30 points even with 18 rebounds, his seventh 30-point performance on the season. His rebounding high is 25 and he's been 20-plus on the glass six times. James Boyd (Jordan, Los Angeles): Former ESPN RISE CalHiSports.com Boys State Athlete of the Week is putting up numbers almost as gaudy as his passing and running yardage when he won the award during football season. Don't forget his sacks because he's playing DE at USC. On the hardwood, maybe the Trojans should give him a crack there as well. In his most recent outing the 6-5, 235-pound Boyd had 35 points and 27 rebounds in a 77-46 drubbing of Bell. He's had a 30/30 game this season and been over 40 points twice, and is averaging 23.7 points and 22.4 rebounds per game. As the late Raiders announcer Bill King would say, "Holy Toledo!” Tyler Bray (Kingsburg): The 6-6 junior, and football quarterback, scored 33 points and made seven three-point field goals to lead the Vikings past Coalinga, 71-38, in a Central Sequoia League game. Bray also had eight rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots against the Horned Toads. Jordan Burris (Stockdale, Bakersfield): He scored a career-high of 35 points against Frontier and led his team to an 89-51 triumph in a Southwest Yosemite League game. Luke Cassedy (Central Valley, Shasta Lake): After going for 30 and 29 points two weeks ago, the 6-1 senior guard had 24 points and 15 rebounds last week in a 60-46 win against West Valley of Cottonwood. Stephen Clark (Community Harvest, Los Angeles): Harvest brought home the crops with his second 31-point effort of the season in 71-39 victory over Foshay Learning Center of Los Angeles. Brian Daniel (El Sobrante Christian, El Sobrante): The 6-foot junior threw down a season-high 41 points with five treys in a 61-55 win against Pleasant Hill Adventist Academy of Pleasant Hill. On the season he's averaging 24.3 PPG and has gone over 30-points six times. Joshua De La Torre (Washington, Los Angeles): Poured in 34 points to help the Generals bury Carson, 74-48, in the L.A. City's Marine League. Lucas Devenny (Piner, Santa Rosa): With CalHiSports.com on hand to see the big fella match up with undefeated cross-town Cardinal Newman, purple-haired Devenny put on a show despite the Prospectors falling 54-51 at Newman. The 6-9, 245-pounder, who is going to UC Santa Barbara, showed everyone he is certainly the best player in the Redwood Empire. Even Newman Coach Tom Bonfigli, who's coached in the area over 20 years, said Big Luke, could very well be the best big man ever to come out of the land of redwoods and wine. Against Newman he had 23 points and 21 rebounds (tying a record for the most in Newman's house), and added six blocks. Earlier in the week in a 59-53 loss to Ukiah, Devenny did all he could with 21 points, 16 rebounds and six blocks. On the season he's averaging 21.3 PPG, 12.5 RPG with 3.7 blocks. Chris Dixon (Garces, Bakersfield): Playing on the same team as Stephon Carter doesn't usually allow many others to score that much, but Dixon went nuts with career-high of 35 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks to lead the Rams past West of Bakersfield, 61-60, in a non-league game. James Douglas (Orange Lutheran, Orange): The Lancers toppled Campbell Hall (Van Nuys) 82-62 at Mater Dei's Nike Extravaganza, thanks in large part to Douglas' 23 points (11 of 18 shooting) and nine rebounds. Devin Dyer (Temecula Valley, Temecula): Although the boys basketball program is the subject of a school internal investigation, it didn't distract Dyer, a 6-1 guard who pitched in 33 points as the Golden Bears downed Vista Murrieta, 70-56, in a Southwestern League game. Stephen Henry (Coastal Christian, Arroyo Grande): Certainly gave it all he had in gathering in 22 rebounds and scoring 19 points, but the Conquerors fell short to Cuyama Valley, 61-57, in Coast Valley League play. Malik Heptot (Dos Pueblos, Goleta): Heptot collected a career-high ten blocked shots, thwarting just enough Buena (Ventura) attempts to help the Chargers to a 47-46 victory in Channel League play. Billy Hilton (Tioga, Groveland): Small school standout for last couple of seasons in the Sac-Joaquin Section had 23 points, 23 rebounds, 12 assists and five blocks as Tioga beat Stone Ridge Christian of Merced, 76-50. Allen Huddleston (Merced): Kept up his scoring average above 30 ppg with 32 points and nine rebounds as the Bears topped Turlock, 66-62. Huddleston also had 28 points, eight rebounds and six assists in a 73-55 win by the Bears over Atwater. Joe Hudson (Escondido): Just a junior, the 5-11 guard poured in 32 points leading the Cougars to a 74-50 Avocado League victory over Fallbrook. Devyn Iglehart (Horizon, San Diego): Went off for 41 points, 21 of them on long-range shots, but didn't get enough help as the Panthers dropped a 57-51 Coastal South game to Francis Parker. He came back with 29, but Horizon still faltered, 55-51, to La Jolla Country Day. Jad Itani (University, Irvine): Dishing out 15 assists, Itani got plenty of return passes as he scored 19 points in leading the Trojans to a 74-69 win over Corona del Mar in the Pacific Coast League. Khalil Kelly (Los Osos, Rancho Cucamonga): It's a good thing Kelly was up to the challenge against Rancho Cucamonga as he scored 35 points to go with 21 rebounds in an 87-84 Baseline League victory. Derriq Knaules (Encina, Sacramento): Knaules dropped balls through the hoop with ease in a 77-54 victory by Encina over Highlands of North Highlands. The senior guard finished with 35 points. Bryce Layne (Hawthorne): It's hard to celebrate, even after you score 41 points, when your team falls as Hawthorne did, 84-76, in a Bay League shootout. Malik Love (Bishop's, La Jolla): There was no love lost as the Knights' 6-2 guard collected a couple of 30-point games. In a 63-49 win over Coastal South rival Francis Parker, Love pitched in 30 and he came back with 31 more in a 66-36 win over Mater Dei (Chula Vista) in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. Dominique O'Connor, Jordin Mayes & Dwayne Polee (Westchester, Los Angeles): This trio was responsible for the Comets bouncing back from a 49-42 loss to arch-rival Fairfax (Los Angeles), when Westchester defeated Rainier Beach of Seattle, 75-65, at the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei. O'Connor scored 21 points; Mayes added 19 and Polee chipped in for 13. Alex Perez (Otay Ranch, Chula Vista): Collected a season-high 36 points to lead Otay to a 74-67 Mesa League victory over Bonita Vista (Chula Vista). Juan Ruelas (Parlier): The senior guard scored 49 points to tie a school record as Parlier beat Orosi, 88-31, in a non-league game. Ruelas also became the 14th player in Central Section history to score 2,000 career points, according to section historian Bob Barnett. David Ryn (Chester): It gets cold up there in Chester, but this 6-4 junior has kept the community feeling warm with his red-hot shooting. He had 28 in a loss last week to Portola and 18 in a win over Greenville. This week he went for 30 and 13 rebounds in a win over Loyalton and 27 points and 11 rebounds in a victory against Big Valley of Bieber. Zeve Sanderson (Franklin, Los Angeles): The Panthers have won five straight and Sanderson has been over 20-points in four of the five outings. Last week the 6-foot junior had 20 and 26 points in respective wins over cross-town Eagle Rock and Lincoln, then came back this week with 27 points in a victory against LA's Belmont. Marty Scarberry (Academy for Academic Excellence, Apple Valley): A regular with this group, Scarberry went off for 40 points and 16 rebounds as the Knights downed Excelsior (Apple Valley) 70-63 in Agape League play. Kiril Sergeyey (Irvine): Sergeyey's 32 points in a 72-67 victory over Laguna Hills helped keep Irvine's Pacific Coast League title hopes alive. Jordan Shivers (El Cajon Valley): His 30 points helped the Braves get into overtime against Grossmont but the Braves were unable to stay with the Foothillers in a 60-51 loss in the Grossmont North League. Renardo Sidney (Fairfax): The big, strong 6-10, 250-pounder who can shoot and put it on the floor, just keeps pounding opponents while he tries to decide where to play this fall. Last week it was 28/12 against Palisades, 33/12 against LACES, 26/22 with four blocks in a 49-42 win against Westchester that avenges one of the Lions' three losses this year; 19/9 against Whitney Young of Chicago; and this week already he dropped in 31 points with nine rebounds against University of Los Angeles. Brandon Smith (De La Salle, Concord): It's almost impossible for one of Coach Frank Allocco's players to make the stat stars, since the grind-it-out style, ball-sharing philosophy and lockdown defense played by the Spartans, rarely allows for an offensive outburst. Still, Smith makes it for two reasons. He had a double-double, and did it on the biggest stage yet. In front of a national audience on ESPNU at the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei, the 6-goot Cal-bound guard had 10 points and 11 assists and took control in a 64-38 dismantling of Dominguez of Compton. Derron Smith (Banning): The standout grid-hoop athlete had two outstanding efforts last week, but they weren't enough to keep the Broncos from dropping two Mountain Pass League games. First, against Tahquitz, Smith scored 26 points, had 15 rebounds and six assist as Banning fell, 74-72. He then followed with a 30-point, 11-rebound, 9-assist game against undefeated league leader Notre Dame of Riverside in the Broncos' 82-77 overtime loss. Justin Smith (Immanuel Christian, Ridgecrest): The size of the school isn't as important as its players as Smith scored a career-high 36 points to deliver ICS a 74-56 win over Big Pine in Hi-Lo League play. Michael Snaer (Rancho Verde, Moreno Valley): Snaer was his usual high-scoring self with 31 points but didn't get enough help as his team suffered its first Inland Valley League setback of the season, 62-59, to Ramona (Riverside). Charles Standifer (Capital Christian, Sacramento): The Div. IV all-state candidate stayed on a roll with 33 points and eight rebounds for Cap Christian in its 59-43 triumph over Marysville. Anthony Stover (Windward, Los Angeles): A main reason why Windward is No. 1 in the state in Div. V is Stover dominating the middle. In a 74-49 win last week over Montclair Prep, Stover had 24 points, 16 rebounds and 10 blocks. He almost triple-doubled again when the Wildcats beat Crossroads of Santa Monica, 73-56. He had 20 pts, 17 rebounds and eight blocks. Jeremy Tyler (San Diego): Though they struggle against California's best, the Cavers still own the section when they play at home as the 6-11 junior poured in 34 points in an Eastern League 77-61 conquest of Morse (San Diego) before coming back with 29 against Eastlake (Chula Vista) in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. Oh yes, he had 25 in another league win over Serra (San Diego), 64-50. Damon Williams (Mira Mesa, San Diego): On fire from beyond the arc, Williams hit six three-pointers as part of his 38 points in leading the Marauders to a 54-44 victory over Serra in San Diego Eastern League play. David Wilson (Wheatland): Pirates' 6-3 senior had a solid outing with 25 points and nine rebounds against Orland then came back just as strong with a 19/19 point/rebound performance earlier this week against Williams, both victories. By the way, this small-town boy leads the Northern Section in scoring according to Maxpreps.com with a 22.6 PPG GIRLS BASKETBALL Okungbowa Aiwelchoe (Monterey Trail, Elk Grove): It was a bittersweet night for Aiwelchoe, who rampaged for season highs of 31 points and 29 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as Monterey Trail fell to Laguna Creek of Elk Grove, 76-72. Michelle Anaya (Washington, Easton): She scored 30 points against Liberty of Madera Ranchos in a North Sequoia League game that the Panthers won, 78-16. Karina Angulo (Indio): Angulo's 16 rebounds helped the Rajahs rally to a 52-41 victory over La Quinta in Desert Valley League play. Alisha Belt (Carson): Helped Carson belt a couple of Marine League foes last week. Belt scored 20 and had 14 rebounds in a 58-36 win over Banning (Wilmington), then added 21 points and 13 boards against King-Drew in a 61-48 victory. Marreon Belt (Silverado, Victorville): Her 15 rebounds, 18 points and six steals led the Hawks past Barstow, 57-33, in Desert Sky League play. Gennifer Brandon (Chatsworth): Another one of the big-time Cal recruits coming in this fall, this senior 6-3 power forward/post continues to dominate opponents and some good ones at that, with consistently solid outings. Against El Camino of Woodland Hills, she had 23 points and 15 rebounds in a victory, 24 points and 20 rebounds against Harvard-Westlake (Sherman Oaks) and in a 51-40 victory over Taft of Woodland Hills that avenged an earlier loss, Brandon had 24 points and 19 rebounds. Jenny Cavellier (St. Joseph's Academy, San Marcos): Rolled in 32 points to lift St. Joseph's to a 61-32 win over Escondido Charter in Citrus West League action. Aunjanay Chambers (Valencia): Pulled down 20 rebounds to go with 22 points in a 68-57 victory over Cypress. It was Valencia's 26th consecutive league victory. Lashia Clarendon (Cajon, San Bernardino): Although Clarendon was the game's leading scorer with 28 points, it simply was not enough against the state's No. 1 team, Mater Dei (Santa Ana), as the Cowgirls fell, 64-56, at the Nike Extravaganza. Raeshel Contreras (Encinal, Alameda): Senior guard had 27 points and eight assists in a 59-38 victory over Kennedy of Richmond. MacKenzie Cunningham (Coast Union, Cambria): Cunningham led the way with 10 steals which helped her score 16 points in a 54-30 win over North County Christian (Atascadero). In all the Broncos collected 31 steals. Dominique Dinner (Monterey): It's been a couple of weeks since we checked in on what Dinner has been dining on. Last week she figured why not feast on Monta Vista Christian of Watsonville with 29 points and six steals but the team lost 55-54. The bill of fare was better later in the week. She only had 27 points with eight steals but the Toreadores won 62-39. Finally, she had dessert earlier this week with 30 points in a 66-51 win against Pajaro Valley (Watsonville), the sixth time she's had 30-plus in averaging 25.3 PPG, tops in the Central Coast Section. Tia Dixon (San Diego): The Cavers boys aren't the only ones with a good team as Dixon, who scored 32 against Serra in a 76-53 Eastern League win over Serra (San Diego), is one of three freshman starters. Jenn Dupper (Mesa Grande, Calimesa): Poured in 30 points in a 63-19 Victory League game against outmatched Desert Chapel (Palm Springs). Heather Foley and Joanna Hernandez (Beaumont): Foley tore down 15 rebounds and Hernandez pitched in 28 points to lead Beaumont to a 62-25 win over Rubidoux (Riverside) in Mountain Pass League action. Stephanie Golden (Miramonte, Orinda): One of the late Darrell Hirashima's favorites both at Miramonte and the Orinda Magic, and one of the better underclass post players in Northern California, the 6-4 junior went for 27 points and 11 rebounds in a 75-49 victory over Dougherty Valley of San Ramon. Samantha Hansen (El Toro, Lake Forest): Like the long-running TV show, her 20-20 (points and rebounds) were a success as El Toro collected a 53-42 win over Northwood (Irvine) in Sea View League play. Jordan Henry (Ursuline, Santa Rosa): This sophomore Bear had a season-high 34 points, shot 8 of 15 from beyond the arc, had 15 rebounds and five steals, but unfortunately it wasn't enough in a 68-56 loss to Ukiah. Two nights previous the 5-7 guard had 20 points eight rebounds and six assists in a 64-60 win against cross-town Montgomery. Kim Iverson (Christian Life, San Diego): Single-handedly out-scored Escondido Adventist as she poured in 34 points in the 57-24 Citrus West League victory. Atoe Jackson (Narbonne, Harbor City): Jackson just dominated the boards, as she has done the entire Marine League season, pulling down 21 (scoring 17 points) in a 47-35 win over Banning (Wilmington) after grabbing 15 caroms (13 points) in a 41-23 win over Gardena. Sara Khalafi (Torrance): Teaming with Tori Caporaso (five three-point field goals), Khalafi tore down 19 rebounds and scored 12 points in a 53-41 Pioneer League win over Lawndale. Ashleigh King (Kearny, San Diego): A 5-4 guard, King has led the Komets in scoring, including 33 points, in a 68-40 victory over Madison (San Diego) in San Diego Central League play. Ariel Mars (Ayala, Chino Hills): While 19 points usually isn't enough to make this list, scoring that many while leading the Bulldogs to their 13th straight Sierra League title with a 61-31 win over Diamond Bar ain't bad. Terilyn Moe (Terra Nova): This young lady looked good over the summer and actually was the fifth ranked freshman out of only seven frosh that made the list of over 200 girls evaluated in the 2008 CalHiSports.com Girls of Summer rankings. Last week the 5-7 guard, who plays like the energizer bunny, had 26 points, 10 rebounds, six steals and six assists in an 80-50 win over South San Francisco. She came back with another double-double 21 points and 10 rebounds against Westmoor (Daly City) in a 57-55 nail-biter. She started a three-win week for the Tigers with 17 points in a 66-51 win against Jefferson of Daly City. Kerah Natividad (Citrus Hills, Perris): Natividad's 15 rebounds and 11 points helped catapult Citrus Hill past Heritage (Menifee) in Mountain Pass League, 53-40. Lauren Polansky (Branson, Ross): Many players get double-double's in their high school career, and a few get triple double's, but rarely does a prep hoopster ever record a quadruple-double like this point guard did earlier this week. Not only that, but she didn't do it against some stiffs, and she played the entire 32-minutes to lead her two-time defending Division V state champion Bulls to victory. With CalHiSports.com in the stands, and almost needing an abacus to keep up with her, the 5-9 Princeton-bound Polansky was everywhere, finishing with 11 points, 12 steals, 11 assists and 10 rebounds in a 57-48 victory on the road at Marin Catholic (Kentfield), the No. 6 team in Division IV in the state. Overall, her numbers are astonishing. Playing against top-notch competition, Polansky is averaging 13.2 points, 10.7 rebounds, 8.5 steals and 6.5 assists per game. Chaunise Powell (Newark Memorial, Newark): Got in amongst the big girls but got it done in a 57-52 victory over arch-rival Logan of Union City. The 5-7 junior point guard had 25 points and 15 rebounds. Jasmine Ray (San Bernardino): It was another couple of days at the office for the Southern Section's leading reported scorer according to Maxpreps.com. In respective 57-28 and 84-30 wins over San Bernardino's Pacific and Arroyo, the junior guard had a double-double of 30 points and 11 rebounds (six steals, seven assists), and a triple double 27 points, 10 rebounds, 13 steals and added five assists. It didn't raise her 28.5 PPG scoring average however. Andrina Rendon (St. Paul, Santa Fe Springs): Collected 16 rebounds to go with 20 points as the Swordsmen downed Dana Hills, 70-42, at the Nike Extravaganza. Lauren Shute's 25 points weren't near enough for the Dolphins. Kelsie Sampson (South Torrance): Collected 15 rebounds to go with 16 points in a 52-40 Pioneer League victory over El Segundo. Dominique Scott (Palisades, Pacific Palisades): It gets a little foggy out near the coast but this 6-2 senior forward hasn't been in one at all this season. Last week in a 39-37 razor thin win over Sierra Canyon of Chatsworth, Scott had most of the numbers herself with 22 points and 19 rebounds. Janae' Sharpe (Rialto): This sophomore guard must like the number 29. Last week she hit that point total in both games, wins over Fontana and Yucaipa. Two weeks ago she had that many points and in a win over cross-town rival Eisenhower. Three weeks ago she had 29 against Miller of Fontana. The difference is last week Sharpe had double-doubles with 11 and 10 steals respectively. By the way, she's been over 30-points four times as well, and is averaging 25.7 PPG for the 21-2 Knights. Sylvia Shepard (Alta Loma): Nice double for Shepard as she scored 33 points in addition to sweeping down 12 rebounds to lead the Braves to a 68-57 win over Upland in Baseline League action. Lindsay Sherbert (Great Oaks, Temecula): Needing a win to clinch the Southwestern League title, Sherbert stepped up by scoring 30 points and collecting 11 rebounds in a 63-40 victory over Murrieta Valley. Jenna Sherman (Granite Hills, Apple Valley): Sometimes monster stats just aren't enough to produce a win. You'd think that Sherman's 23 rebounds, to go with 13 points, would give her club an edge but it was Burroughs (Ridgecrest) that prevailed, 51-46, in the Desert Sky League. Brooke Silva (Los Banos): She looks like a lock for the Modesto Bee All-District team as well as All-Merced County and had another strong outing last week with 34 points and 10 rebounds in a 61-46 win over Atwater. China Smith (West Adams, Los Angeles): This 6-1 forward, who dominates the small prep schools in the Los Angeles City Section, was more like fine crystal last week, going for 42 points, 25 rebounds and 10 steals; 29 points 20 rebounds and eight steals; and 24 points 18 rebounds and 10 steals in blowouts against Los Angeles, Santee and Bravo respectively. She only had 10 points, 11 rebounds and five steals against Contreras. What happened? Another blowout. DeNesha Stallworth (Pinole Valley, Pinole): She couldn't deliver the victory in a 62-50 loss to re-vamped Berkeley but it wasn't due to lack of effort. The Cal-bound post played all 32 minutes and finished with 36 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks. Tabitha Torres (Corcoran): Stat star regular from the Central Section scored 30 points against Woodlake. Corcoran won by the score of 58-21. Taijuan Walker (Yucaipa): Walker dominated inside as she swept down 21 rebounds to go with 23 points in a 65-57 Citrus Belt League triumph over Riverside East Valley (Riverside). Cierra Windham (Norco): Although it was far from Windham's best game of the year, her 19 points allowed her to set the school career scoring record which she now hold with 1,779 points. Norco downed Big VIII foe Roosevelt (Eastvale), 73-37, to cap Windham's big night. She broke the record previously held by Erica Arriaran, now at the University of Texas. Hannah Womack (Liberty Christian, Redding): Another girl that looked good over the summer at a camp in San Diego is this 5-5 sophomore point guard. Last week she went for 30 points and six assists against Mercy of Red Bluff, the fourth 30-point or more performance on the season. Saturday, at the Bentley Shootout, she had 20 but the Patriots lost to Castilleja of Palo Alto. Emily Writer (Laguna Beach): After a 51-point effort earlier, Writer scripted out a major upset as she scored 32 points to go with 10 rebounds as the Waves denied Estancia (Costa Mesa) a share of the Orange Coast League title…at least for one more game. Melissa Zornig (Santa Margarita Catholic, Rancho Santa Margarita): The 5-9 guard/forward scored 30 second half points on her way to 33 points (eight rebounds, three steals, three assists) to lead the Eagles to an upset victory over Villa Park. The effort was the biggest single point production in the girls' games at the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei. Earlier in the week she was near her 23.1 PPG average with 24 points in a loss to Lutheran (Orange), but under it with only 12 in a loss to top-ranked Mater Dei. Eve Zelinger (Castilleja, Palo Alto): The individual star of the Bentley Shootout in Lafayette had 33 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in an impressive 62-39 victory over Liberty Christian of Redding. stat stars, CA, basketball, state record book, state records, Jose Arreloa, Marty Scarberry, Juan Ruelas, Jeremy Tyler, Samantha Hansen, Lauren Polansky, China Smith

To inquire about a section or state record, please email Senior Editor Ronnie Flores at ronnie@studentsports.com or call (800) 660-1334 Ext. 4414; For games played between Jan. 26-31; Writeups by Ronnie Flores, Harold Abend, Steve Brand, Tom Shanahan, Mark Tennis & Bob Barnett) BOYS BASKETBALL Mark Armitage, Montgomery (Chula Vista): Even Armitage's 35 points, more than half of his team's total, were not enough as the Aztecs fell to resurgent Mar Vista of Imperial Beach, 72-69, in the Metro South Bay League play. Luis Bidart (Christian, El Cajon): The Brazilian foreign-exchange student scored a season-high 39 points in leading the Patriots to a 57-53 non-league victory over Calvin Christian of Escondido. Jon Baird (Sanger): The 6-1 senior guard scored a career high of 33 points and made six three-point field goals against Reedley in a County/Metro League game that the Apaches won, 72-59. Marcus Beaird (Bear Creek, Stockton): The most consistent and explosive scorer in Stockton, Beaird keeps improving his scoring average even when the Bruins lose. In a 68-60 loss last week to Franklin of Stockton, the 6-3 senior scored 37 points. Roderick Bobbitt (Castro Valley): Bobbitt did everything he could with a game-high 23 points, but the Trojans still lost for the first time at home in two years, dropping a 61-53 to state-ranked San Leandro. Eric Brown (Dana Hills, Dana Point): His 12 fourth quarter points gave him 30 for the game and led the Dolphins past Capistrano Valley of Mission Viejo, 63-57. Joseph Burton (West Valley, Hemet): "Big Joe" tore down 27 rebounds to go with 20 points and seven assists in a 79-57 Sunbelt League rout of Paloma Valley of Menifee. Jamar Cannon (Redondo Union): Drained nine three-point field goals en route to a 31-point performance in leading Redondo to a 70-58 Bay League victory over Palos Verdes. Ivor Clayton (High Tech, San Diego): A 5-11 junior, Clayton went off for 38 points but it still wasn't enough as Escondido Charter outscored High Tech by 14 in the final quarter in its 67-61 Frontier League victory. Yevgeniy Dyachanko (River City, West Sacramento): One of the leading scorers in the Sac-Joaquin Section at more than 23 ppg, Dyachanko was dynamite with 38 points and 10 rebounds as River City defeated West Campus. Look for more on this athlete later this week. Merlin Edwards (Marin Academy, San Rafael): The Bay Counties League-West leading scorer (18.3 PPG) missed two games last month to attend the inauguration of President Obama with his family, but since then he's shaken off the rust of not playing, posting solid outings to lead his team to four wins in the last five games. This week in a 47-30 victory over Urban of San Francisco, he dropped in a cool 20 points to get his team to 18-4 overall and 5-2 in league. R.J. Farrell (Villa Park): Terrific triple of 33 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in a 70-62 Century League conquest of El Dorado of Placentia. Craig Fisher (Brawley): It seemed like every time Brawley needed a basket, there was Fisher, who scored 32 points in a 69-61 Imperial Valley League victory over Southwest of El Centro. Andre Fowler (Reseda): The Regents sixth man scored 18 of his 22 points during a 28-4 run as the Regents defeated visiting Sylmar, 90-85, to take control of the Valley Mission League. Jamaal Franklin (Serrano, Phelan): Two monster games for the SDSU commit as he hit for 35 points, 18 rebounds and eight blocked shots to lead the D'backs to an 82-56 win over Rim of the World of Lake Arrowhead. He was even better against Barstow, pouring in 38 points, gathering 17 rebounds and missing a triple-double by one with nine blocks. Demaree Hampton (Mission, San Francisco): You saw his name before during football season when he was a standout receiver for the Bears. Now, longtime CalHiSports.com photographer and San Francisco prep sports observer Willie Eashman reports the 5-9 point guard is burning up the nets. In 75-35 win over cross-town O'Connell, he had 31 points, 10 teals and six assists. It was the fifth time this season he's been over 30-points with a high of 42 against neighboring Balboa. On the season the speedy Hampton is averaging a San Francisco Section leading 22.7 points with 5.8 steals and 5.7 assists per contest. Montreal Harris (Twentynine Palms): Surpassed 2,000 points in his career with 25 and also surpassed 1,100 rebounds during a 91-56 De Anza League victory over Yucca Valley. Justin Herold (Carrillo, Santa Rosa): This big 6-8 front liner continues to carry the hot hand and now has his season averages up to 23.3 points and 15.2 rebounds per game. Last week in two games, he had 27 points, 15 rebounds and nine blocks in a win over Rancho Cotate of Rohnert Park and 25 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocks in a close loss to Ukiah. Already this week, in a 68-48 victory over Santa Rosa, Herold burned the nets for a season-high 38 points, with 13 rebounds and four blocks. Mark Hills (University City, San Diego): When you play against Lincoln of San Diego, you better be ready to score and Hills answered that call, tossing in 31 points to lead the Centurions to a 78-67 City Western League victory. Tyler Honeycutt (Sylmar): The 6-8 UCLA-bound senior had 40 points and 21 rebounds, but the team fell short in a 90-85 loss to Reseda. Later in the week he had another 20-20 double-double with a triple-double as he deposited 24 points, grabbed 20 rebounds and blocked 10 shots in a 99-84 victory over San Fernando. Teandre Hubbard (Marshall, San Francisco): Had 19 and 27 points last week in 90-40 and 56-52 wins, respectively, over the City's Galileo and O'Connell. He had 17 this week in a victory over Lowell that puts the Phoenix at 13-6 overall and into a three-way tie with Lincoln and Mission in the AAA's Lang Division. Since joining the team in January after coming over from Sacred Heart Cathedral, Hubbard has six 20-point performances in eight games played and is averaging 21.4 points 7.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds per game. Alvin Jefferson (Barstow): In a game in which Serrano's Jamaal Franklin went off for 38 points, Jefferson almost kept pace as he scored 31 in a 79-69 overtime loss. Moses Kinnah (Gunderson, San Jose): We missed him, but not the Grizzlies whom Moses has been leading to the Promised Land in the last eight games with the team winning seven. Twice he was at or over the 30-point mark with 30 against Branham and 31 versus Prospect, both of San Jose. Stephon Lamar (St. Augustine, San Diego): The hard-working Lamar was almost the entire offense but that was enough as the senior guard's 33 points helped lift St. Augustine past Mission Bay of San Diego in the City's Western League. Quincy Lawson (Vista): In a key Palomar League showdown at Poway, the 6-foot-6 senior's 31 points led to a 70-60 victory. Kawhi Leonard (Martin Luther King, Riverside): All-state wing player had a dominant week for state-ranked Wolves. In a Big VIII showdown against Centennial of Corona, Leonard scored 29 points and had 18 rebounds in a 77-62 victory. Earlier he dominated on the boards, collecting 22 rebounds with many leading to his 25 points, in a 61-47 win over J.W. North of Riverside. He added 15 points in a 58-35 victory over Riverside Poly. Brad Lewis (Simi Valley): Converted five three-point field goals and scored 29 points, but it wasn't enough as Thousand Oaks opened a two-game lead in the Marmonte League with a 57-55 overtime victory. Noel Mansour (Saugus): Scored more than half of his team's points with 30 in an 81-59 Foothill League setback to Hart of Newhall. Darren McQueen (Moreno Valley): Got into a shootout with Valley View of Moreno Valley standout Christian Showalter in Inland Valley League action. Although his 37 points were best, his team fell, 87-81. Showalter finished with 34 points. Mike Miller (Mira Costa, Manhattan Beach): By dominating the boards with 20 rebounds, some of which led to his 14 points, Miller helped lead Mira Costa to a 61-60 Bay League win over Palos Verdes. Jules Montgomery (Chaminade, West Hills): Had 29 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocks to lead his team to a 71-68 overtime win against Alemany of Mission Hills. Reese Morgan (Peninsula, Rolling Hills Estates): All-state freshman from last year scored the winning basket with seven seconds left and finished with 28 points as the Panthers topped West of Torrance. Morgan, who is averaging 22 points and 11 rebounds over his last seven games, also had 10 rebounds and made 9-of-9 free throws. Daniel Munoz (Santa Margarita, R.S.M.): Munoz converted 14 of 17 from the free throw line en route to scoring 36 points in an 80-77 Trinity League win over Servite of Anaheim. Prince Obasi (Cleveland, Reseda): Cavaliers' leading scorer had 30 points and 10 rebounds in a 70-61 victory over Chatsworth. He came back with 21 points and 11 rebounds in a 63-60 victory over El Camino Real that allows the team to hold on to second place in the West Valley League. Peter Papageorge (Burlingame): Scored a game high 25 points to lead the Panthers to their 12th-straight win in a 56-41 victory over San Mateo. Nefi Perdomo & Greg Brown (Skyline, Oakland): Pedomo had a game-high 26 points with nine rebounds and six assists and Brown added a double-double 20 points and 14 rebounds as the Titans won a wild 71-67 double overtime game against Oakland Tech. Tech appeared to have the game won but a technical foul for celebration on what would have been the winning play as regulation expired allowed Skyline to tie it up. Austin Renk (Marin Catholic, Kentfield): The senior guard stepped up and gave the Wildcats' offense a shot in the arm, scoring 10 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter en route to a 68-54 win against Justin-Siena of Napa, thus earning the Marin Independent Journal's Boys Prep of the Week. Nick Rosa (Immanuel, Reedley): Racked up a career high of 32 points against Dinuba in a Central Sequoia League game that Immanuel won by 72-56. Robbie Rowland (Cloverdale): Gets another appearance this week after helping his team pull out an exciting 61-60 win against St. Vincent of Petaluma to extend its winning streak to 13 games. He finished with 38 points, 17 rebounds and was 14 of 15 from the free-throw line including 4-for-4 in the final 30 seconds. Juan Ruelas (Parlier): The 5-9 senior shooting guard scored 39 points against Riverdale. He led Parlier to a 93-73 win in the West Sequoia League game. Dillon Sabia (Drake, San Anselmo): The leading scorer in the Marin County Athletic League at over 17 points per game has had three solid double-double performances in a row. Last week in a close 43-40 loss to three-time defending state champion Branson, he had a game high 23 points and 12 rebounds. He came back with 29 points and 13 rebounds in a 62-49 win against Redwood of Larkspur. This week, with CalHiSports.com in the stands, the 6-4 senior, whose big brother Morgan starred at Drake and is now at Hartford, came up huge in a 62-61 overtime victory over Marin Catholic of Kentfield. Down 60-59 in the final minute of OT, Sabia hit a long three-pointer to give the Pirates the lead for good at 62-60. He finished with 28 points, including three closely-guarded three-pointers and added 10 rebounds, three blocks and three assists. Yuhki Sakai (Lowell, San Francisco): In front of 3,000 fans at Kezar Pavilion in the "Battle of the Birds” against cross-town arch-rival Washington, this Cardinal led the way with 26 points in a 55-44 victory over the Eagles. Myron Samuel (Perris): Big triple-double with 32 points, 10 assists and 10 steals in an 80-62 win over Lakeside of Elsinore in the Sunbelt League. Renardo Sidney (Fairfax, Los Angeles): Quickly becoming the front-runner for Mr. Basketball after two more big games. The 6-10 center scored 37 points and collected 12 rebounds to help the Lions escape with an 84-83 Western League win over Palisades after scoring 30 points in a 82-44 rout of Hamilton of Los Angeles. Anthony Smith (South San Francisco): The 6-3, 205-pound power forward exploded for a season high 34 points with 10 rebounds in a 74-50 victory over Jefferson of Daly City. Michael Snaer (Rancho Verde, Moreno Valley): Rancho Verde was able to run its Inland Valley League record to 10-0 after Snaer hit for 30 points in a 77-50 blasting of Riverside Arlington. Noah Springwater (University, San Francisco): Had a game-high 21 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter, but it was his assist in the second overtime that helped lift the Red Devils to a 60-58 victory over Marin Academy of San Rafael, in a battle for first place in the BCL-West league. Charles Standifer (Capital Christian, Sacramento): Standifer was a stand up guy with 43 points in his team's 83-65 victory over Highlands of North Highlands. He also had 21 rebounds in that game and last week also had 33 points in a 77-41 win vs. Golden Sierra of Garden Valley. He is now averaging more than 25 ppg. Chase Tapley (Sacramento): Remember him from last year's CIF Division III final vs. Santa Margarita? The dynamic guard hit for 33 points last week as Sac High beat McClatchy of Sacramento, 83-53. TJ Taylor (Oakland): Sophomore 5-8 speedy guard threw down 25 points, his ninth 20-point performance on the season, but it wasn't enough, as the Wildcats dropped a 59-47 decision to cross-town Skyline. Jeremy Tyler (San Diego): Going head-to-head with San Diego Hoover soph. Angelo Chol was no contest. Tyler scored 37 points, including 11 slam dunks, and pulled down 14 rebounds while limiting Chol to four points and eight boards in a 76-66 win that gave the Cavers undisputed first place in the Eastern League. Jordan Vargas (Hesperia Christian): Vargas' 32 points helped the Patriots roll over Excelsior of Apple Valley, 81-53, in Agape League play. GIRLS BASKETBALL Nicole Anderson-Jew (Marin Catholic, Kentfield): Last week's Marin Independent Journal Girls Prep of the Week started out this week, with CalHiSports.com in the stands, doing even better than she did last week to earn the award. After missing most of last season with a knee injury, the 5-7 point guard looked good this summer and looks even better as the playoffs approach. This week, in a 54-35 victory at San Anselmo Drake, she had a game-high 22 points with four assists and three steals. This season she's shooting 54 percent from the floor and a staggering 58 percent from 3-point range – and she shares, doling out 5.4 assists a game. She's hitting 80 percent of her free throws as well. On Friday, a day before her 17th birthday, Anderson-Jew finished with 13 points in a 57-23 win over Terra Linda to go with four assists and three steals. In a 70-46 win over Justin-Siena, she pumped in 17 of her game-high 19 points in the first half. She was 4-of-5 from beyond the arc and also had six assists, five steals, four rebounds and two blocks. Kate Bergsma (Corona del Mar, Newport Beach): Despite a 17-rebound, 15-points performance, CdM dropped a 58-52 Pacific Coast League game to Irvine. Gennifer Brandon & Monica Jackson (Chatsworth): This high-scoring duo helped the Chancellors bounce back from back-to-back losses to Taft (Woodland Hills) and Long Beach Poly with a 80-31 victory over Cleveland of Reseda. Brandon, a 6-3 senior, had 34 points with 22 rebounds and Jackson added 27 points. In the process they helped Coach Michelle Chevalier secure her 150th varsity win during her time at Sylmar at Chatsworth. Brandon had scored 30 against Poly but it wasn't enough in a 62-59 loss. Jackson, a 5-7 junior guard is averaging 22.0 points per game and Brandon is at 20.2 points and 17.3 rebounds per contest. Darshae Burnside (Cajon, San Bernardino): Led the Cowgirls to their 62nd and 63rd straight San Andreas League victories when she pulled down 18 rebounds to go with 20 points in an 83-37 win over San Bernardino in which six Cajon girls hit double-figures. She then came back with 16 boards and 22 points in 95-45 rout of San Berdoo San Gorgonio. Lashari Claybourne (Roosevelt, Fresno): She's a senior standout for a team that is on the verge of a D3 state ranking. Roosevelt certainly isn't used to that kind of attention. Claybourne scored a career high of 36 points against McLane of Fresno last week in a North Yosemite League game. The Roughriders won, 85-37. Ashley Duffy (El Capitan, Lakeside): In what is normally a showdown between two of the top Grossmont North teams, San Diego State signee Duffy made it no contest as he poured in 38 points in a 60-41 romp. Desiree Duncan (Upland Christian): Although Duncan was virtually unstoppable with 35 points, La Sierra of Riverside had better balance in a 58-48 Arrowhead League triumph. Lauren & Ashley Engelin (Laguna Hills): Lauren led the way with 20 rebounds and 16 points but twin sister was right there with 16 points, four of them long-range bombs, in a 53-38 win over University of Irvine in Pacific Coast League action where Laguna Hills improved to 6-0. Amanda Frost & Shawline Segodia (J.W. North, Riverside): Frost chilled Eastvale Roosevelt with 30 points and Sedovia added 15 points and 12 rebounds as North rolled to an 81-30 Big VIII victory. Gabby Garcia (Saddleback, Santa Ana): Collected 15 rebounds while scoring 12 points to lead Saddleback past Orange, 44-25, in Golden West League play. Shelly Gupilan (Bellarmine-Jefferson, Burbank): The Guards are 23-1 and the top-ranked Division V team in the state with a one-point loss to Montclair Prep of Van Nuys in the finals of their own tournament as the only blemish on a 24-1 mark. One of the big reasons is this 5-9 senior guard who had another day at the office with 20 points and seven rebounds in a 68-38 victory over St. Anthony's of Long Beach. Jennifer Hansen (LeGrand): She gets into the stat stars again, this time for scoring 32 points with 10 rebounds, 10 assists and seven steals in a 70-39 win over Mariposa. Nyre Harris (Lincoln, Stockton): One of several top freshmen on the Trojans' roster (looks like at least a few in town that aren't at St. Mary's), Harris had an impressive double-double with 23 points and 23 rebounds as Lincoln beat Lodi, 64-49. Nicole Hicks (Saugus): Hicks' 32 points weren't quite enough as Valencia used balanced scoring to hand Saugus its first Foothill League loss of the season, 81-70. Leslie Huber (Elliot Christian, Lodi): Huber was superb with 32 points, 18 rebounds and 10 steals as her team rolled past Lodi Academy, 53-36. Nicole Hung (Harvard-Westlake, Sherman Oaks): In a 58-45 win over Chaminade of West Hills, the 6-foot junior D1 prospect was right at her average of 19 points which doesn't usually qualify for stat stars. We're going to recognize Hung however, since the first basket of the game gave her 1,000 points in a 65-game career that has the rest of this season and next year still remaining to add to her total. Victoria Iosefa (Granite Hills, Apple Valley): Iosefa's 15 rebounds combined with an equal number of points helped lift Granite Hills to a 67-59 win over Rim of the World of Lake Arrowhead in a non-league game. Mary Kate Jankowski (La Reina, Thousand Oaks): Set a school record with 27 rebounds but Nordhoff (Ojai) managed to win 44-32. The record is equal to No. 7 all-time in Ventura County and the school mark was 25 years old. Janelle Junior (La Sierra, Riverside): Personally outscored Moreno Valley with 33 points in a 74-28 rout in the Inland Valley League. Kaleena Lewis (Mater Dei, Santa Ana): What roundup would be complete without the No. 1 player on the No. 1 team in the state and nation? Lewis added 28 points to her growing total in a 65-37 Trinity League rout over Rosary of Fullerton. Victoria Lippert (Cathedral Catholic, San Diego): Headed to Harvard, the 5-foot-11 shooting guard connected for 33 points in leading the Dons to a 71-50 victory over Scripps Ranch of San Diego in City Western League action. Earlier in the week she had 24 in a 67-23 rout of La Jolla. Kristan Liddle (Irvine): Had a triple-double of 18 rebounds, 15 points and 10 steals in a 58-52 Pacific Coast League victory over Corona del Mar. Stephanie Lopez (Banning, Wilmington): Collected a nifty triple-double with 28 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to help lift the Pilots to a 66-42 romp over San Pedro in Marine League action. Ariel Marsh (Ayala, Chino Hills): Collected a career-high 33 points in a 73-46 win over Glendora in Sierra League play. Emily Osga (Patrick Henry, San Diego): The Patriots are starting to warm up as the playoffs loom, just as they did last year, and Osga is leading the way as she scored 32 points in a 60-38 romp over Serra of San Diego in City Eastern play. Felicia Pet (Montgomery, Chula Vista): Burying six long-range three-pointers, Pet led the Aztecs to a key 69-62 victory over Sweetwater of National City and into a tie for the Metro South Bay League lead. Jasmine Ray (San Bernardino): Although she was held to 18 points, Ray contributed elsewhere with 12 steals to lead San Bernardino to a 60-15 win over Colton in San Andreas League action. Lara Richmond (Apple Valley Christian): Collecting 16 rebounds and 17 points, Richmond led Apple Valley Christian to a 43-28 win over Antelope Valley Christian in Agape League play. Bonnie Samuelson (Edison, Huntington Beach): Extremely accurate shooter, both from the line and from the field, made six three-pointers and had 33 points for the Chargers in their 70-37 victory over Fountain Valley. Samuelson is a 6-2 sophomore and is averaging more than 19 ppg. Lindsay Sherbert (Great Oak, Temecula): Drained six three-pointers en route to a 29-point, 13-rebound game in a 61-35 victory over Chaparral in Southwestern League action. Ashley Watkins (Silverado, Victorville): Buried six long-range shots from beyond the arc and the Hawks needed every one of her 24 points and seven rebounds in a 69-68 non-league victory over Yucca Valley. Megan Williams (Mesa Grande, Calimesa): Surpassed 1,500 rebounds in her career while scoring a game-high 19 points in a 50-33 Victory League win over Hemet Baptist Christian. Jalecia Wilson (Godinez, Santa Ana): Swept down 25 rebounds and added 11 points for a In-n-Out Burger special to lead Godinez to a 42-33 win over Laguna Beach in Orange Coast League action. Jasmine Walker (Kaiser, Fontana): Was a rebounding machine when she collected 25 to go with 10 points in a 52-40 Sunkist League win over Norte Vista of Riverside. Starla Wright (Valencia): Just 12 days after suffered a concussion, Wright returned to score 27 points and lead the Vikings to a 70-57 victory over Canyon of Canyon Country in the Foothill League. State Stat Stars of the Week January 29, 2009 4:48 PM (For additions, corrections or to report a statistical standout we may have missed, email mark@studentsports.com. To inquire about a section or state record, please email Senior Editor Ronnie Flores at ronnie@studentsports.com or call (800) 660-1334 Ext. 4414; For games played between Jan. 19-24; Writeups by Ronnie Flores, Harold Abend, Steve Brand, Tom Shanahan, Mark Tennis & Bob Barnett) BOYS BASKETBALL: Greg Allen (Eureka): Was over 30-points twice last week with 30 even in a 73-68 win against Arcata, and then 33 in a 76-61 victory over McKinleyville. The 6-2 senior guard is now averaging 24.2 PPG and has been over 30 on five occasion with a high of 40 against Red Bluff. Mitchel Anderson (Chaparral, Temecula): Collected a nice double of 30 points and 13 rebounds to lead Chaparral to a 79-70 win over Phoenix Precision of Arizona in a non-league game. Alvaro Arreola (McFarland): Scored a career-high of 34 points and grabbed nine rebounds against Farmersville in a East Sierra League game that McFarland won by a 79-62 score. Tony Baldocchi (Cardinal Newman, Santa Rosa): Cardinals' star makes a second straight appearance after climbing the ladder in three games last week. On Tuesday, he had 14 points in a 64-50 victory over Carrillo of Santa Rosa. He came back on Thursday with 22 points in a 58-40 victory against cross-town arch-rival Montgomery. Saturday, he reached the top of the mountain with a 41-point outing in a 79-58 trouncing of Ukiah. The point total breaks the school record of 38 set in 1995 and is the first 40-point performance in the 43-year history of the school. On the week, he hit ten three-pointers and was 21 of 23 on the free-throw line, 12 of 13 versus Ukiah. He's averaging a little over 19 PPG and his team is now 19-0 going into this week. Marcus Beaird (Bear Creek, Stockton): He's becoming a stat star regular and did it again last week with 33 points and 14 rebounds as the Bruins beat Tracy. The score was just 55-45, which shows how dominant Beaird can be this season. Marcus Bell (Enochs, Modesto): A 6-9 senior center who is averaging just over 21 ppg, had 27 points to go with 17 rebounds and five blocks as Enochs topped Grace Davis of Modesto, 67-54. Luis Bidart (Christian, El Cajon): Needing a big game against balanced Crawford of San Diego, Bidart threw down 35 points in a convincing 55-42 Patriots Central League victory. Andrew Bock (Eisenhower, Rialto): The Eagles suffered a tough 88-84 setback that to Redlands in Citrus Belt League action as the Creighton University recruit's 32 points weren't quite enough. The four-point loss dropped Ike out of this week's state top 20 rankings. Shaquille Bush (Crawford, San Diego): Not much was expected of the Colts this season but with someone different stepping up each week, they remain competitive in the Central League. Bush tossed in 31 points in an 84-82 non-league loss to Morse of San Diego. Jamar Cannon (Redondo): Drained seven three-pointers and added nine rebounds and five steals in a 30-point performance during a 69-53 victory over Bay League foe Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach. Stephon Carter (Garces, Bakersfield): Former CalHiSports.com State Athlete of the Week continues to have a hot hand as he scored 37 points in a lopsided 82-52 win over East Bakersfield. He also scored 29 points in a losing effort against Liberty of Bakersfield, the Central Section's top-ranked Division II team. Tyler Cross (The Rock Academy, San Diego): Look out for this team in the next couple of years. The 6-4 sophomore scored 37 points as The Rock hammered Escondido Charter in Frontier League play. Former Horizon head coaches Zach Jones and Waheed Mitchell are at The Rock, Jones as the AD and Mitchell as the coach. Jared Cunningham & Travis Sims (San Leandro): With President Obama's brother-in-law Craig Robinson in the house after the inauguration and his team's win over Cal, his Oregon State recruit didn't disappoint his future college coach in a 72-68 victory over Bishop O'Dowd of Oakland. Cunningham scored a game-high 24 points and answered key O'Dowd baskets in the fourth quarter with an end-to-end layup and a three-pointer. It was his teammate and best friend Sims, however, who was the key in overtime, scoring five of his 13 points in the extra period, including a high-arching three-pointer that gave San Leandro a two-point lead with under a minute to play. Michael Dykema (Valley Christian, Cerritos): Senior guard poured in 31 points in a 63-58 win over Ontario Christian. Andrew Farhadi (Buckley, Sherman Oaks): Had a solid game with 30 points, 13 rebounds and five assists in Buckley's 73-44 victory over Oakwood of North Hollywood. Dashawn Gomez (Inglewood): Netted a career-high 40 points in Inglewood's 93-71 victory over Hawthorne in an Ocean League contest. Jordan Grace (Citrus Hill, Perris): Normally an 18-point, 10-rebound effort doesn't qualify for this list but there are exceptions, like when the player putting up those numbers is a freshman and it results in a 74-72 win over Banning in Mountain Pass League play. Willie Heien (Lutheran, San Diego): The 6-foot senior broke loose for 35 points to lead Lutheran to a 72-54 victory over Mountain Empire in Citrus South League action. Robbie Herndon (St. Patrick-St. Vincent, Vallejo): This promising 6-foot-2 sophomore guard has been flying under the radar in the stacked Bay Shore League, averaging 17.3 points and 6.8 rebounds a game for the 15-5 Bruins. Last week in a 67-64 loss to Piedmont, he scored 23 points and had a season-high 13 rebounds. This week he came back with another double-double with a season-high 31 points and 11 rebounds in a 71-70 victory over Albany. Justin Herold (Maria Carrillo, Santa Rosa): This 6-8 senior averages a double-double 22.2 points and 15.4 rebounds a game for the 13-7 Pumas. In his last two games, both wins, he had 28 points and 13 rebounds with five blocks against Allen of Santa Rosa, then came back with 23 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks against El Molino of Forestville. Just another week at the office for this Redwood Empire standout. Tanner Hinek (Arroyo Grande): Buried all 12 free throws he attempted en route to finishing with 24 points and eight rebounds but it wasn't quite enough as Righetti of Santa Maria prevailed, 60-58, in Pac-VII League play. Tyler Honeycutt (Sylmar): The Spartans took on Cleveland of Reseda at the War on the Floor Extravaganza, but despite a big performance by this UCLA recruit, came up just a big short. Honeycutt is hoping he and his teammates can develop a killer instinct because after opening up a 15-0 lead, Sylmar lost in overtime after Honeycutt fouled out. He finished with 34 points and 18 rebounds in a losing effort. Allen Huddleston (Merced): The prolific senior didn't quite match his season high of 50 points, but did score 48 in a 87-84 loss to Golden Valley of Merced. The former CalHiSports.com State Athlete of the Week made 12 of 13 free throws, but it took 15-of-35 shooting from the field to score all those points. James Johnson (Valley Center): One of the state's best wide receivers is also a pretty fine basketball player as he went for 35 points in a dramatic 74-70 win at Ramona after hitting 29 in a close 71-69 Valley League victory over San Marcos. John Kennedy (Hanna Boys Center, Sonoma): The picturesque setting on Arnold Drive of the Hanna Boys Center is faintly reminiscent of Cape Cod where this junior guards' namesake, the nations' 35th President John Kennedy, was reared. What this Kennedy is doing is making lots of baskets, to the tune of 21.3 ppg for the 8-7 Hawks. Last week in a loss to Summerfield Waldorf of Santa Rosa, he had a season-high 39 points. He followed that with 16 points and seven rebounds in a win against Cornerstone Christian of Antioch and 26 points and seven assists this week in a win over Napa Christian of Napa. Brian Kuklok (Poway): The 6-foot-3 senior's 33 points in a 74-69 Palomar League win over Rancho Buena Vista included four from beyond the arc and 9-of-10 from the free throw line. A.J. Mathis (Hesperia): When Hesperia and Rim of the World of Lake Arrowhead got into a scoring orgy, Mathis was ready, netting 36 points to lead Hesperia to a 100-95 Mojave River League victory. Corey Maulupe (Pacific Lutheran, Torrance): In a 65-40 victory over Summit View of Valley Glen, Maulupe came up with a triple double of 13 points, 11 rebounds and 11 steals. Darren McQueen (Moreno Valley): Although he scored 33 points against Riverside Ramona, his team came up far too short in a 73-51 Inland Valley League loss. Reeves Nelson (Modesto Christian): The UCLA-bound standout is beginning to ramp up his level of play. Nelson, who got out to a slow start this season due to a football-related knee injury, poured in 37 points in a 83-66 win over Hughson. He also had 27 to lead the Crusaders past defending CIF Division IV state champ Campbell Hall. Eric Obeysekere (Miramonte, Orinda): This 6-9 senior forward bound for Holy Cross came up with a huge performance in the Matadores' 76-72 come-from-behind victory on the road at Salesian of Richmond. With his team trailing 68-58 with 4:20 left, Obeysekere took over, scoring 10 of his team's 18 points from there until the final buzzer, including 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. He finished with 23 points and 23 rebounds with nine boards in the final period. For good measure he added five blocks and a couple of assists and left the Salesian folks seeing him in nightmares. Jordan Sachs (La Habra): Quietly putting together a fine season, this Westmont College signee poured in 35 points in a 70-40 win over Sunny Hills of Fullerton. Evan Redel & Kirk Sheplay (North County Christian, Atascadero): Both surpassed the 1,000-point mark for their careers in the same week. Redel got his as part of a 19-point effort in a 60-45 win over Maricopa and Sheplay followed with 20 in an 80-41 win over Cuyama Valley in Coast Valley League action. Jason Reinhardt (Elsinore, Lake Elsinore): The 6-foot-6 senior tossed in 29 points, pulled down 17 rebounds and swatted away eight shots in leading Elsinore to a 59-49 win over Lakeside of Lake Elsinore in Sunbelt League play. Marty Scarberry (Academy for Academic Excellence, Apple Valley): Had 33 points, seven rebounds and six steals as AAE beat Apple Valley, 60-46, in Agape League play. Desmond Simmons (Salesian, Richmond): The 6-foot-7 junior was rewarded for his play last week by being named the San Francisco Chronicle Bay Area Metro Boys Athlete of the week. He eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career with 21 points in a victory over St. Joseph-Notre Dame of Alameda. Simmons followed that up with 22 points and 15 rebounds in the Pride's 57-45 come-from-behind victory over St. Mary's of Berkeley in "The Rock” game. This week already, with CalHiSports.com's Mr. Kibosh in the house at the tiny Richmond school, where the stands almost extend onto the floor of a court 10 feet shorter than normal, Simmons had 16 points and 15 rebounds but the Pride blew a 10-point lead in the final 4:20 to lose 76-72 to Miramonte of Orinda. The mojo was so strong it caused Simmons to miss a lay up with 21.4 seconds remaining that would have given Salesian the lead. Michael Snaer (Rancho Verde, Moreno Valley): Snaer was unstoppable as he scored 36 points and the rest of the team added 31 in a 67-51 Inland Valley League victory over Valley View of Moreno Valley. Ifeanyi Ume (CAMS, Carson): Small school standout continues to shine as he came up with 19 points, 17 rebounds and five blocks in an overtime 65-61 victory over Camp Kilpatrick of Malibu. Robert Walters (Valley View, Moreno Valley): Put up huge numbers – 35 points and 20 rebounds – and Valley View needed every one of them in a 72-68 Inland Valley League victory over Arlington of Riverside. Brandon Ward (Woodcrest Christian): Reached the 40-point plateau as he led Woodcrest to a 78-51 rout of San Jacinto in non-league action. Lonnie Watson (Paso Robles): It took Watson a little longer than most but his 32 points eventually proved too much as Paso Robles beat Pioneer Valley, 77-74, in triple overtime. His three-pointer sent the Pac-VII League game into OT. Travon Williams (Bell Gardens): Nailed six of his team's 14 three-pointers and finished with 35 points as Bell Gardens defeated Schurr of Montebello in Almont League play, 96-65. GIRLS BASKETBALL: Emily Allard & Raven Fox (Deer Valley, Antioch): The Wolverines had a rough early schedule but since a close loss to Sacramento in the West Coast Jamboree, they've won nine straight and are 13-6 and on the bubble of the state girls top 20 in large part to this duo. In a 62-29 trouncing of St. Patrick-St. Vincent of Vallejo at the Acalanes Shootout, Allard, a 6-foot forward who will attend Northwestern on a softball scholarship, had a game-high 20 points with seven rebounds and three steals. Fox, a 5-6 sophomore, who can play point or off guard and is becoming one of the Bay Area's top underclass small girls, finished with 17 points with two treys, four steals and three assists. Gennifer Brandon (Chatsworth): The younger sister of Arizona State forward Kim Brandon is a bonafide Pac-10 player in her own right. She dominated inside with 22 points and 17 rebounds in a 71-56 win over El Camino Real of Woodland Hills. She also had 29 points and 19 rebounds against West Valley League rival Taft of Woodland Hills, but the Toreadors pulled out the 68-67 victory on a clutch three-pointer by Haley Newell. Chatsworth hurt itself by making only five of 17 shots from the charity stripe. Stephanie Carr (West Adams Prep, Los Angeles): Los Angeles High was no match for Carr and her teammates as they rolled to a 95-4 victory over the Lady Romans. Carr finished with 44 points while China Smith added 24 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists. We wonder what the reaction to this game and what the press coverage would have been of the score ended up 95-0. We know what would have happened had it been 100-0. Chariese Culberson (Berkeley): After a disappointing outing on MLK Day at Haas against state-ranked Carondelet of Concord in a loss in which she was held in check, Culberson came back strong in a 56-39 victory over Piedmont at the Acalanes Shootout. The 6-foot sophomore had a double-double 21 points and 16 rebounds, and added six blocks with her long arms. Jazzmyn Davis (Birmingham, Van Nuys): In a 45-25 victory over Cleveland of Reseda, Davis led the way with 21 points and 22 rebounds. Lauren Engelin (Laguna Hills, Laguna Beach): Set a school record by scoring 34 points in a 74-58 win over Dana Point Dana Hills in a non-league game. Brianna Feld (North County Christian, Atascadero): Made sure the Crusaders jumped out quickly as she dominated the boards with 16 rebounds while adding 21 points and seven assists in a 49-34 Coast Valley League win over Maricopa. Rebekah Hartie (L.A. Adventist): In a 63-32 shellacking of L.A. Wildwood, Hartie was a one-man party as she finished with 38 points, 16 rebounds, six steals, three assists and three blocks. Larissa Loera (Jurupa Valley, Mira Loma): Continued to put up big numbers as she scored 32 points in a 75-57 win over Patriot of Riverside in Sunkist League play. Stephanie Lopez (Banning, Wilmington): While the Port of Los Angeles community of Wilmington remains shocked over the murder-suicide of a family of seven distraught over finances, at least there is a shining light on the hardwood for the Pilots that the community can be proud of. In a 67-49 Marine League victory over Gardena, Lopez was money with 28 points, 18 rebounds and eight assists. She also had a 35-point, 11-rebound game in Banning's 48-465 victory over King-Drew of Los Angeles. Danielle Mauldin (St. Mary's, Berkeley): A superb four-game week garnered this 5-11 junior the San Francisco Chronicle Bay Area Metro Girls Athlete of the week. She averaged 16 points and six rebounds in lopsided victories over Justin-Siena of Napa, Albany and St. Patrick-St. Vincent of Vallejo. She saved her finest game for CalHiSports.com, who witnessed her 25-point, 11-rebound performance in a 63-54 victory over Pinole Valley of Pinole at the Acalanes Shootout. After the big week Mauldin's 16-4 Panthers jumped four spots to No. 9 in the CalHiSports.com Bay Area top 20 rankings. Jeanette Mendoza (San Marcos, Santa Barbara): Tossed in 31 points, reportedly the most for San Marcos in 14 years, by converting 10 of 15 from the field, to lead the Royals to a 58-56 win over Camarillo in non-league action. The 5-foot-7 senior also had 10 rebounds. Lauren Polansky (Branson, Ross): The other half of the Princeton-bound Bay Area duo along with Niveen Rasheed (Monte Vista, Danville) that were recently featured in the San Francisco Chronicle, had 20 points, eight steals, seven rebounds and six assists in the Bulls' 50-49 nail-biting victory over Drake. Polansky scored her team's only four points of the fourth quarter when it seemed like there was a lid on the basket. Tasha Pollard (San Bernardino): Had a triple-double, scoring 18 points and collecting 10 rebounds and a like number of blocked shots in a 65-54 San Andreas League win over San Gorgonio of San Bernardino. Later she combined with Deandrea Ferguson for 25 blocked shots in a 78-39 win over Arroyo Valley of San Bernardino. Rachel Porter (Gahr, Cerritos): The Gladiators couldn't get the job done against Culver City in a non-league tussle, but Porter came to play as she finished with 20 points and 21 rebounds. Niveen Rasheed (Monte Vista, Danville): Bubbling with exuberance after having her picture and a feature story (along with Branson's Lauren Polansky) on the San Francisco Chronicle Sporting Green's front page, Rasheed had a phenomenal game in a 53-42 victory over newest league rival, state-ranked Carondelet of Concord. To top it off, Rasheed's and Polansky's future college coach, Courtney Banghart, was in the stands sitting alongside CalHiSports.com, who was also in attendance. The 6-foot Princeton-bound guard, who also plays soccer and studied ballet and dance, twirled and whirled her way around everyone, registering a double-double with 22 points and 17 rebounds along with seven steals. Of Rasheed's totals, 17 of the points and 10 rebounds came in the first half, as no one could stop her while the team built a 33-12 lead. Andrina Rendon (St. Paul, Santa Fe Springs): In a hard-fought battle in the Del Rey League, Serra of Gardena coach McKinsey Hadley was not happy with the officiating but it can't be denied that Rendon was on fire down the stretch. She finished with 28 points in the 69-59 victory, including 17 in the fourth quarter. Her final eight points came at the charity stripe. Marrissa Rendon, who finished with 13 points for St. Paul, also came up big down the stretch, scoring the go-ahead bucket with 3:15 remaining and closing out the game with five more points, including a three-pointer. Cameron Ruby (University, San Francisco): Her team fell behind 21-0 then 25-3 to Clay Kallam's Campolindo Cougars in the opening game of the Acalanes Shootout, but Ruby never let her dauber down. With her team down by so much and Kallam showing a little compassion, it opened up for the 5-8 junior who proceeded to make 5 of 8 three-pointers en route to a game-high 21 points. Kallam's compassion didn't last that long and Uni was on the short end of a 76-54 final. Janae Sharp (Rialto): Piled up 34 points, had 11 assists and 10 steals for a nifty triple-double in a 78-47 win against Carter of Riverside in Citrus Belt League play. Teammate Diamond Smith glittered with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Devin Short (Monache, Porterville): Pumped in a career high of 32 points in a East Yosemite League game against Tulare that Monache won by a 69-63 score. Denesha Stallworth & Javier Brantley (Pinole Valley, Pinole): The 6-3 Cal-bound Stallworth threw down 30 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, plus four blocks and four steals. Brantley, a 5-7 senior guard, had 18 points, including 5 of 9 from beyond the arc, but it wasn't enough. The rest of the team could only muster six points in a 63-54 loss to St. Mary's of Berkeley at the Acalanes Shootout. Sarah Tamulski (Piedmont): Her team has struggled a bit at 13-6 overall and 4-3 in the tough Bay Shore League, but that hasn't stopped this 5-11 senior Div. I prospect from dominating games. On the season she's averaging 20.8 ppg and 17.9 rpg. Although she can't match former Highlander and current Oklahoma Sooner star Courtney Paris' over 100-straight college games with a double-double, Tamulski has registered a double-double in all 19 of her games this season. Last week, she had 18 points and 22 rebounds in a win over St. Patrick-St. Vincent of Vallejo, 27 points and 21 rebounds in a win over Salesian of Richmond, and 14 points and 13 rebounds in a loss to Berkeley at the Acalanes Shootout. That loss and low output must have gotten Sarah a little angry because she came back this week with 27 points and 23 rebounds against John Swett of Crockett in a 60-30 road victory. Tabitha Torres (Corcoran): Torres was torrid once again with 32 points against Strathmore in a East Sequoia League game the Horned Toads won, 74-34. Megan Williams & Rachel Tohn (Mesa Grande Academy, Calimesa): The duo was unstoppable as Williams poured in 24 points and collected 13 rebounds and the sophomore Tohn, in her first start, added 14 rebounds and 15 points in a 59-19 rout of Redlands Adventist-the 60th straight Victory League triumph. Emily Writer (Laguna Beach): Penned her own story when she scored a school record 51 points by making 17 of 40 from the field in a 78-57 win over Costa Mesa in Orange Coast League play. She added 10 rebounds and eight steals for the Breakers. Melissa Zornig (Santa Margarita, Rancho S.M.): Scored 32 points, including three from long range, to help Santa Margarita hand Orange Lutheran its first loss of the season, 57-53, in a Trinity League showdown. That came on the heels of 25 points in a loss to state No. 1 Mater Dei of Santa Ana. Just to wrap up a huge week, she got 33 points, 23 before intermission, in an 86-61 thumping of Ramona in the Orange County-San Diego County Showdown. State Stat Stars of the Week January 22, 2009 4:02 PM (For additions, corrections or to report a statistical standout we may have missed, email mark@studentsports.com. To inquire about a section or state record, please email Senior Editor Ronnie Flores at ronnie@studentsports.com or call (800) 660-1334 Ext. 4414; For games played between Jan. 12-17; Writeups by Ronnie Flores, Harold Abend, Steve Brand, Tom Shanahan, Mark Tennis & Bob Barnett) BOYS BASKETBALL: Tony Baldocchi (Cardinal Newman, Santa Rosa): He's not the only reason Newman is currently 16-0, but he's a major reason. Last week with 20 points in a win against cross-town Piner and 22 in a win on the road at Rancho Cotate, Baldocchi earned the Santa Rosa Press Democrat boys athlete of the week. The 6-1 senior guard is currently averaging 19 points per game. Moises Barrera (Pacifica, Oxnard): Barrera did all he could do, scoring 31 points, but it wasn't enough as the Tritons suffered a 76-73 double overtime loss to Oxnard in a Pacific View League showdown of unbeaten teams. Marcus Beaird (Bear Creek, Stockton): He rippled home 35 points in yet another sterling effort, but it wasn't enough as the Bruins were beaten in a league game, 67-64, by Lodi. Sean Boston (Banning, Wilmington): The Pilots always love to triumph over their archrivals the Carson Colts and Boston played a big role in their 48-45 victory with 18 points, 18 rebounds and eight blocked shots. Hakeem Bradley (West Ranch, Valencia): Despite his 27 points and 10 rebounds, the Wildcats had their five-game winning streak snapped by Saugus, 70-63. It was the second straight 27/10 game for Bradley who had those same numbers in a 61-49 win over Canyon of Canyon Country. Tyler Bray (Kingsburg): The big-time junior grid-hooper scored 37 points and pulled down eight rebounds against Central Valley Christian of Visalia, but the Vikings came up short, 68-62, in a non-league game. Cameron Brjoomi (Van Nuys): Although the Wolves' best player, Victor Rudd, transferred to new West Region power Findlay Prep in Nevada, they received a performance from Brjoomi that is as good as any Rudd had last year as he went for 31 points and 18 rebounds in a 66-50 victory over North Hollywood. Jerry Brown (Sacred Heart Cathedral, San Francisco): According to a story in the San Francisco Chronicle, the Irish forward missed his family's annual MLK Day barbeque to suit up on Monday. What he didn't miss was the chance to shine on the hardwood this past Monday at Cal's Haas Pavilion. Fresno State-bound, this 6-foot-7 senior ignited the first boys' game of the day with a 28-point effort in a 77-72 victory over Skyline of Oakland. He scored 16 points in the first half, getting a number of put backs and easy scores while slashing to the basket. Ricky Cardenas (Cathedral City): Despite having 10 steals and 24 points, Cardenas was unable to do it all by himself as the Lions were edged by La Quinta in Desert Valley League play, 63-59. Johnny Dee (Rancho Buena Vista): The 5-11 sophomore collected 31 points in a 65-64 upset of La Costa Canyon of Carlsbad. The Longhorns rallied from a five-point deficit heading into the final quarter. Laurence Degracia (Southwest, San Diego): The Raiders, who are proving that their basketball program in no way resembles the winless football team, got 34 points from the 6-foot-1 senior en route to a 71-42 South Bay League victory over Castle Park of Chula Vista. Michael Dykema (Valley Christian, Cerritos): Senior guard netted 31 points in a 63-58 victory over Ontario Christian. Jamaal Franklin (Serrano, Phelan): The same week Franklin announced he would be signing with San Diego State, he had a monster game against Hesperia but it wasn't enough to prevent Serrano from having its 34-game Mojave River League streak snapped, 55-50. The 6-5 forward scored 31 points, hauled in 17 rebounds and blocked nine shots and continues to show why he is one of the state's most underappreciated talents. Kiwi Gardner (Manteca): Had back-to-back 30-point plus efforts to help get the Buffaloes to 15-2 on the season. Last week in a 75-59 victory over cross-town arch-rival Sierra the 5-7 sophomore point guard slashed his way to a season-high 36 points with six steals and five assists. He came back this week with 35 points with eight assists and five steals in an 80-57 victory over Weston Ranch of Stockton. Davon Harrell (L.A. Adventist): Dueces were wild for Harrell with 22 points and 22 rebounds in a 47-42 victory over Pacific Lutheran. Rasheem Harris (Reseda): The regents are playing solid ball and opened up Valley Mission League play with a 95-55 win over Sepulveda Monroe as Harris scored 30 points. Lonnie Jackson (Valencia): Jackson netted 30 of the Vikings' 70 points but they still came up short as Hart of Newhall captured the Foothill League win, 75-70. Harnarinder Johal (Livingston): The 6-foot-5 center made sure his team wouldn't lose two straight Western Athletic Conference games with 32 points in a 72-60 triumph over Patterson. Johal added 18 rebounds and seven blocks in a dominant outing. John Kaker (Palm Desert): Went 10-of-12 from the line and 9-of-14 from the field for 28 points to lead Palm Desert to an 82-57 win over Indio in the Desert Valley League. Cody Kessler (Centennial, Bakersfield): He tied his own school record by scoring 42 points against North of Bakersfield in a game the Golden Hawks won, 66-52. Derriq Knaules (Encina, Sacramento): Jumped up his outstanding season scoring average to 26.0 per game by connecting for 32 points for Encina in a 81-73 win vs. Capital Christian of Sacramento. Kirk Law (Mid-Peninsula, Menlo Park): The reported scoring leader in the Central Coast Section plays on a tiny Div. V team, but his numbers have been anything but small. Last week in three victories over St. Lawrence of Santa Clara, More of San Jose and San Francisco Christian of San Francisco, the 5-9 senior guard had 31, 26 and 25 points respectively. Law is averaging 21.1 points per game on the 10-6 Dragons. Reggie Lawson (Hoover, San Diego): On a team with soph sensation Angelo Chol, Lawson stepped up by scoring a season-high 32 points for San Diego's No. 1-ranked team, leading the Cardinals to a 93-51 Eastern League victory over Morse of San Diego. He also had 18 rebounds in the easy win. Stephon Lamar (St. Augustine, San Diego): In a key 79-76 Western League victory over favored University City, ranked No. 8 in the San Diego Section at the time, the 6-1 senior guard was unstoppable, hitting for 31 points. He added 25 points in a 62-49 win over parochial rival Cathedral Catholic and then pitched in 26 more as the Saints capped a big week by downing St. John Bosco of Bellflower, 55-52, in the Southern California Coaches' Classic at Carlsbad High. Troy Leaf (Foothills Christian, El Cajon): Surpassed the 2,000-point barrier for his career when the junior scored 27 points in an 83-63 victory over Div. I Eastlake of Chula Vista. Teammate Caleb Hatcher added 22 points. Brad Lewis (Simi Valley): Had a 32-point performance to lead the Pioneers to a 82-73 Marmonte League victory over Westlake Village of Westlake. Jules Montgomery (Chaminade, West Hills): The 6-foot-10 Montgomery needed some chiding from Eagles coach Todd Wolfson after some sub par performances and the Long Beach State commit responded. He led Chaminade to four consecutive wins by scoring 114 points, including a career-high 40 points in a 69-55 victory over Verbum Dei of Los Angeles. He added 14 rebounds and five blocked shots against Verb. Donnell Phifer (Narbonne, Harbor City): This one is from two weeks ago, but is worth mentioning as Phifer was on fire in a 74-73 win over San Pedro he scored 40 points in the double overtime victory and is shooting over 70 percent from the field so far this season while averaging over 16 ppg. Josh Ritchart (Forest Lake Christian, Auburn): He's been among the scoring leaders in the Sac-Joaquin Section all season, but last week came through with that rarity of rarities, a quadruple-double, in FLC's 71-56 victory over Delta of Clarksburg. Ritchart checked in with 30 points, 16 rebounds, 10 blocks and 10 assists to reach his quadruple-double. Noel Rojas (Le Grand): In a 80-64 romp past Delhi in a Southern League game, Rojas was red hot and finished with 41 points. His teammate, Ian Thompson, added 23 points. Robbie Rowland (Cloverdale): The junior 6-6 forward is becoming a regular to this feature. Last week after his previously netted 30 points against Kelseyville, he finished the week with a 26-point, eight rebound, five assist effort in a close win over St. Vincent's of Petaluma. Already this week he's gone for 21 points and 25 rebounds with four assists in an 89-49 that gets the Eagles to 17-2 on the season. Rowland is now averaging 23.2 points and 13.5 rebounds per contest. Marvin Samuel (Perris): Samuel was on top of his game as he got the score-o-meter spinning by tossing in 32 points as the Panthers collected an 80-65 Sunbelt League win over Hemet. Robert Sandoval (Clovis East, Fresno): Pumped in 31 points to help Clovis East up its record to 15-4 with a 84-69 victory over Cleveland of Reseda. Patrick Scott (Bear River, Lake of the Pines): The standout senior guard hit for 38 points to lead Bear River past Lincoln, 67-62, in a league game. Scott, who had 40 and 38 points in single game already this season, is averaging 26.3 ppg. Christian Showalter (Valley View, Moreno Valley): When you toss in seven from beyond the arc, you'll likely have a decent game. Showalter did just that, pouring in 37 points to lead Valley View to an 83-66 win over La Sierra of Riverside in Inland Valley League action. Desmond Simmons (Salesian, Richmond): Two days after Salesian beat Newark Memorial, 58-55, in OT at the MLK Day event at Cal's Haas Arena, it was a big day for the Pride's junior forward. His tip-in midway through the second quarter of a 72-47 road victory at Alameda over St. Joseph Notre Dame put him at the 1,000-point mark in his career. He finished the day with 21 points to climb to 1,016 for his Salesian career and also added 11 rebounds. Derrell Swanson (Lakeside, Lake Elsinore): The 6-2 junior did all that he could for the Lancers, scoring 35 points, but it wasn't nearly enough as Lakeside fell to Paloma Valley, 78-65, in Sunbelt League play. Jeremy Tyler (San Diego): Although the Cavers never trailed, they needed a big game from the 6-11 junior center and he produced, scoring 37 points in a 68-61 Eastern League won over Patrick Henry of San Diego. Later in the week he got 25 points in a 63-42 win over Serra of San Diego and after a long plane flight and short turnaround, collected 22 points in a 56-39 loss to Columbus North of Ohio. Ifeanyi Ume (CAMS, Carson): Ume had a monster game in a 63-53 victory over Paraclete of Lancaster as he netted 19 points and grabbed 20 rebounds. Brandon Vandenburg (Xavier Prep, Palm Desert): If West Shores of Salton Sea continues to play opponents like this the school may want to consider going back to the CIF San Diego Section. Vandenburg was credited with 25 rebounds which led to his 30 points, as Xavier Prep rolled to a 52-36 victory. Michael Williams (Taft, Woodland Hills): Nailed eight three-pointers and finished with 29 points to help the state-ranked Toreadors defeat Granada Hills, 81-56. The win was impressive considering some of the victories the Highlanders were able to pull out earlier in the season. Kyle Wong (Mills, Millbrae): Has a game-high 23 points as Mills knocked off Hillsdale, sending the previously undefeated squad to its second straight defeat. GIRLS BASKETBALL: Annika Awbrey (King's Academy, Sunnyvale): Went over the 30-point mark for the third time this season with a 32-point effort in a 61-36 win over Harker of San Jose that gets the Knights to 7-6 on the season. Unfortunately for her, it came in a losing effort as Yosemite won the non-league game, 60-59. Gennifer Brandon (Chatsworth): All-state candidate led L.A. City Section favorites to back-to-back wins to open West Valley League play. In a 77-28 victory over Birmingham, Brandon went for 24 points and 19 rebounds while all-city guard Monica Jackson added 29 points and eight steals. Brandon, a 6-foot-3 post presence headed to Cal, came back and went for 25 points and 28 rebounds in a 47-34 over Granada Hills as the Chancellors upped their record to 11-6. Layshia Clarendon (Cajon, San Bernardino): Last year's state junior of the year and University of California-bound senior scored 24 points in teaming with Arkansas recruit Darshae Burnside (22 points) to lead nationally-ranked Cowgirls to a 57-50 victory over Etiwanda of Rancho Cucamonga in the Downtown Showdown at the Staples Center. Dominique Dinner (Monterey): The Toreadores didn't have a game for a couple of weeks, so Dinner had time to rest up and build up her appetite. Earlier this week, she and her mates feasted on Watsonville in a 64-43 victory. Dinner dined to the tune of 39 points and stole the plates from seven Wildcatz girls as well. Her per game average now sits at 25.4 ppg. Ashley Duffy (El Capitan, Lakeside): It looks like San Diego State will be getting a good one as the 5-foot-9 Duffy tossed in 38 points in a 61-52 triumph over Granite Hills of El Cajon in a non-league game at Granite Hills. Lauren Engeln (Laguna Hills, Laguna Beach): There wasn't much that Engeln didn't do as Laguna Hills buried Beckman of Irvine, 64-23, in the Pacific Coast League game. Engeln single-handedly outscored Beckman with 29 points, adding eight rebounds and a like number of steals. Janelle Flores (Palm Springs): Going a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line, Flores scored 26 points and collected six steals in a 50-39 victory over Coachella Valley in Desert Valley League action. She scored 26 points and collected 10 rebounds in the easy win. Christine Hobby (Hughson): Playing winless Amador of Sutter Creek inspired Hobby to go for a triple-double and she got it as the Huskies won, as expected, 48-25. Hobby posted 16 points and had 13 rebounds and 11 steals. Maya Hood (La Jolla Country Day): The 5-foot-10 freshman had a breakout game as the senior less Torreys stunned Mount Miguel, the San Diego Section's No. 2 ranked team, 53-48 in the Elite Classic. Hood had 14 rebounds, seven points, five steals and four assists to allow LJCD to pull away down the stretch. Sara James (Oak Ridge, El Dorado Hills): The junior guard's reputation as one of the state's top players continues to grow. Facing state-ranked Hanford last weekend, James displayed a multi-faceted game and was impossible to stop. She ended with a game-high 38 points, although Hanford still held on for a 70-68 victory. James is now averaging 21 ppg. Allie Koualczuk (Williams): This 5-10 senior guard/forward had a season high 29 points with nine blocked shots, eight rebounds and five steals in a 49-30 victory over Maxwell. She's been over 20 points in eight of the Yellowjackets' 13 games and is averaging 20.1 points and 9.8 rebounds per contest. Her reward was being selected the Santa Rosa Press Democrat girls athlete of the week. Niveen Rasheed (Monte Vista, Danville): Although she had a fine season last year, leading the Mustangs to the East Bay Athletic League title, this Princeton-bound guard has recently gotten more exposure, and with it, stamped herself as one of the top all-around players in the Bay Area. Last week in a 69-28 victory over California of San Ramon, she had 21 points. In another road victory, 69-47 over Livermore, the 6-foot Rasheed, who studies ballet and dance, and also previously played soccer, danced and twirled her way to 25 points and 17 rebounds in 23 minutes of action. Keilani Ricketts (Archbishop Mitty, San Jose): On a team with five players 6-2 or taller, the 6-3 Oklahoma-bound softball hurler turned power forward led her team to a big 56-44 win over WCAL and cross-town rival Valley Christian; a game in which the Monarchs' size was too much for the Warriors. She only scored 14 points, but Ricketts pulled down 15 rebounds and blocked four shots. In the fourth quarter, she even popped a three-pointer from the top of the key and drew nothing but net. Denesha Stallworth (Pinole Valley, Pinole): She was a bit under the weather last week when Berkeley knocked her Spartans out of the state rankings with a 44-39 defeat. She still had a triple-double, 13 points and 10 blocks, but the double and triple-teaming of the Yellowjackets held her to 12 points and only four free throws in the second half of the loss. Last week, the 5-5 point guard, who got good marks in the CalHiSports.com Girls of Summer rankings, had two excellent outings. In a 66-38 win over Westwood, she scored 32 points with six rebounds and four steals. Womack finished the week with a 25-point effort in a 63-39 victory over Dunsmuir. On the season, she's averaging 21.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. Allison Wong (Mercy, Red Bluff): Old-time Sacramento Valley farmers used to say it got hot enough in Red Bluff in the summer to fry eggs on the sidewalk. Well, its winter and Wong is blazing, and the result is the Warrior girls are 11-3 at the midway point of the season. The Northern Section's leading scorer at 26.5 points per game was actually under her average last week with 21 points in a 49-38 victory over Chester.
