With World Series MVP Cole Hamels (a graduate of Rancho Bernardo High in San Diego) leading the way, the Phils are back in the World Series although one notable difference is the outfielder Pat Burrell (Bellarmine, San Jose) is no longer on the roster. No problem, though, for California as Burrell's spot is now taken by outfielder Ben Francisco (Servite, Anaheim). One of the strength of the defending world champs, of course, is their up-the-middle combo of shortstop Jimmy Rollins (Encinal, Alameda) and second baseman Chase Utley (Long Beach Poly). Utley hammered a pair of homers in Game One of the series off Yankees' ace C.C. Sabathia, who himself is a CalHi alum and a former State Athlete of the Year from Vallejo High. Girls of Summer: 2009 Final California Report August 24, 2009 3:03 PM Mater Dei's Mosqueda-Lewis tops the list of 234 players who scored better than 9.00 in our in-person evaluation system. Six other Monarchs also are on the list. San Clemente's Cassie Harberts and Oak Ridge's Sara James both among the top 10 in the state as well. By Harold Abend, Special to CalHiSports.com For the fifth straight year, the CalHiSports.com caravan hit the road and logged almost 10,000 miles in evaluating girls basketball players over two-plus months of summer events. Once again, the journey started and ended with events close to home in the Bay Area. The first stop was the Battle of the Best Showdown at Oakland's Laney College in June and the final stop was the Back to School Shootout, August 14-16 at Dougherty Valley High in San Ramon. In between, there was a home event in the Redwood Empire before we hit the road for all of the major gatherings held during the NCAA viewing period. That trip started with an extended stay in San Diego, interrupted by a three-day stint in Orange County in between. It was then on to Las Vegas for a week where the girls caravan even assisted Vegas roommate and ESPN RISE CalHiSports.com managing editor Ronnie Flores by covering the boys final at the Main Event. The long road trip ended with a short 100-mile commute each way to Redwood City. ... (Read full post) basketball, ca, Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, Cassie Harberts, Sara James, Justine Hartman
Girls of Summer: Back to School Classic August 18, 2009 12:18 AM It wasn't just the breezes off the southern slopes of Mt. Diablo that were red hot at the Back to School Classic. Some Dragons from Oakland breathed a little fire as well. The event was also the debut of several new coaches. By Harold Abend, Special to CalHiSports.com The AAU club girls basketball season for the summer has been finished for over two weeks, but once again as they've done for the past eight years, Chabot College women's coaches, administrators, and even players who worked the clocks and scribbled in scorebooks, hosted the 9th Annual Back to School Classic last weekend. Because of gym renovations at Chabot's Hayward campus, the August 14-16 Classic, a brainchild of 25-year Gladiators' Women's Coach Don Queyrel and his assistant and Chabot Dean of Special Programs & Services Gerald Shimada, had to move to two-year-old Dougherty Valley High in San Ramon and its beautiful state-of-the-art nearly new gym. That meant enlisting the support of new Wildcats' coach Doug Vanderhorst and his staff of volunteers. Vanderhorst, who takes the helm at Dougherty Valley after a one year hiatus preceded by nine years at Amador Valley of Pleasanton, has a solid team built around Sacred Heart Cathedral (San Francisco) transfer, 6-1 incoming junior Raven Brooks. The young squad (five juniors, eight sophomores, one freshman) played very well throughout the tournament. Three days of mid-90s temperatures and another 450 miles for the caravan's camels required lots of liquids to keep up with the heat outside and on the court.(Read full post) basketball, CA, Robie Mayberry, Bishop O’Dowd, Alexous Robinson, Dublin, Hailie Eackles, Pinewood, Kelly Sopak, Miramonte
Prep Notes With A Twist August 16, 2009 9:28 PM New Sac-Joaquin Section Hall of Fame another step closer to first class. Plus, 74-year-old will be head football coach again, St. Mary's of Stockton threesome pick their colleges and new school openings in Tracy, Yorba Linda. By Mark Tennis, Executive Editor Momentum is beginning to build in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section for the state's second high school sports hall of fame. We have halls of fame already for single schools and for cities in which former high school athletes and coaches are included, but the CIF San Francisco Section is the only one that so far has organized a hall of fame. It's a bit different, of course, for the Sac-Joaquin Section to get one going since San Francisco is such a small section while the Sac-Joaquin is the second-largest in the state. The Sac-Joaquin endeavor is planned to culminate during the 2010-11 school year with the induction of a 50-member inaugural class. This would consist of 25 athletes, 13 coaches and 12 contributors. The section recently invited a panel of six media members to aid new section communications director Will DeBoard with whittling down a massive list of potential inductees and I was glad to be one of them. Will's initial lists numbered more than 600 and by the end of the day we had cut it down to 78 potential athletes and just over 30 coaches. ... Girls of Summer: Viewing period finale August 4, 2009 7:10 PM The action in the final major California viewing period event for girls basketball may have been down the Peninsula in Redwood City, but the Summer in the City Tournament was dominated by a team of girls mostly from the East Bay and two Yellowjackets in particular. By Harold Abend, Special to CalHiSports.com Last weekend's Summer in the City Tournament at first glance looked like it would become a matchup of host Mark Anger's East Bay Explosion Black against Ray Mayes' FBC Blue, the Southern California team that couldn't quite close the deal last week at their own EA Sports National Showcase in Las Vegas. Although the tournament was in the Bay Area at Sequoia High in Redwood City, the CalHiSports.com caravan only made the 200-mile round trip journey from its Sonoma County base on the final day's action of the July 29-31 event. The one day of basketball we covered was outstanding even if the host EBX Black squad didn't hold up its end of the bargain, losing in the semifinals to Cal Ballaz after leading by eight points with around four minutes remaining. "We just didn't take care of business,” said Anger, who refused to make excuses but told CalHiSports.com he was without Carondelet's Hannah Huffman (2012) whose overall guard play this summer has been exemplary and amongst the top incoming sophomores in the state. That ballhandling deficiency against the ballhawking Ballaz would prove fatal not only for Anger's girls but also for the team Leroy Hurt's team of mostly East Bay girls met in the Black Division finals, Maye's FBC Blue girls from the Southland. ... Girls of Summer: Vegas style 2009 July 30, 2009 2:14 PM Sara James leads impressive showing by Sacramento girls at EA Sports National Showcase. A different California team makes it to the finals but loses at the Reebok Girls Summer Championships. By Harold Abend, Special to CalHiSports.com Even a fried alternator near Needles, where it was 115-degrees, couldn't stop the CalHisports.com caravan from getting to Las Vegas from San Diego to check out the two NCAA Certified Women's viewing events on July 22-25. Once the Mojave Desert was traversed and Vegas was reached, roaring loud thunderstorms and intermittent showers coupled with consistent 100-plus degree temperatures, high pressure and humidity couldn't match the explosiveness of the level of play by the top teams. Close to 100 college coaches split their time between Arbor View High, site of the Elite Division of FBC Director Ray Mayes' EA Sports National Showcase Tournament, and Silverado High, 34 miles to the south near Henderson, where the Reebok Girls Summer Championships was being put on by Mark Anger of East Bay Explosion. The talent level was pretty much equal at the two events. With the exception of Anger's EBX Black, the better California teams were at the EA Sports Showcase, while the Reebok Championships had teams from Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and a team from Illinois, the Chicago Lady Fire, that won the event with a 41-35 victory over Anger's Black squad comprised of many of the Bay Area's top players. ... Championship Sunday in Sin City July 27, 2009 6:23 AM The California contingent of AAU teams in Las Vegas this past week for the "Five Days of July" didn't fare as well as last year, with only one squad based out of San Jose making a 17U top division championships game in four major tournaments. That team competed at the Main Event, but fell to a team from Florida. Other titles were taken by teams from Oregon, Michigan and Tennessee. Read below for full recap of title games. By Ronnie Flores, Senior Editor Contributing: Harold Abend Main Event 17U Platinum Division Championship: Nike Team Florida 55, Bay Area Ballers Purple 46 The luster was taken off this year's Main Event when the defending champion, California Supreme, opted out to participate at the Reebok Summer Championships. Still, two solid teams met in the 17U Platinum Championship, Nike Team Florida from North Florida and the Bay Area Ballers Purple from the San Jose (Calif.) area. Several college prospects shined on a 112-degree and humid day, but none brighter than Nike Florida's 6-2 solidly built guard Keith McDougald. The incoming senior at Bishop Kenny in Jacksonville, had a game-high 21 points, added seven rebounds and was unafraid to hit the glass on both ends while also proving to be an effective driver. After the game, McDougald told ESPN RISE CalHiSports.com that several colleges are looking at him, including Butler, Florida Atlantic and North Florida, Santa Clara and Old Dominion. Also, playing well was highly regarded 6-9 power forward Anthony Lee, who told CalHiSports.com he has many offers, but his preferences are Virginia Commonwealth, Tulane, George Mason and South Carolina. The incoming 6-10 senior post at West Oaks Academy (Eustis, Fla.) finished with a double double -- 12 points and 11 rebounds. He also blocked three shots. Other major contributors for Nike Florida were Florida State-bound Okaro White (2010), a 6-9 lean forward from Clearwater High, and two players from 2011, 6-2 guard Scottie Wilbekin from The Rock School (Gainesville), and 6-7 forward Christopher Bryant from Rickards of Tallahassee. White had eight points and five rebounds, Wilbekin chipped in 11 points, and Bryant pulled down eight rebounds. The Ballers were seriously undersized against Florida, but some torrid three-point shooting and the hard work of a post-grad kept them in the game. Had their top player and best three-point shooter, 6-2 Tyler Johnson (2010 from St. Francis, Mountain View), not gone down midway through the first half and just after hitting an NBA-range trey, the outcome could have been different. After the game Johnson said the right knee "locked up" when he came down after going for a rebound.(Read full post) CA, basketball, Main Event, Super 64, Center Stage, Summer Championships, Bay Area Ballers Purple, Bay Area Ballers, Memphis Magic, Joe Jackson, Perry Jones, Tyler Johnson
California Vegas Notebook July 26, 2009 12:41 AM We hit gyms all over Las Vegas on Friday and Saturday and were able to evaluate, catch up with and talk to many California prospects and some coaches. Below is what we saw and some of what we found out. Some of the top teams in the various championship brackets were upset at the Center Stage and Super 64 on Saturday afternoon. By Ronnie Flores, Senior Editor *Although his Pump N Run team lost a 93-92 decision to the Atlanta Celtics, Jordin Mayes (Westchester, Los Angeles) hit some timely shots and continues to improve his overall game. His handle is tighter and his ability to drive in both directions has improved greatly in the last calendar year. Mayes hit back-to-back three-pointers to cut the Celtics' lead to three points and another triple he hit tied the game with eight minutes remaining. Mayes said he is fielding offers from Boise St., San Diego, and Utah, although he told us he probably won't sign until late. That will likely be a smart move as we can envision more high majors getting involved in Mayes' recruitment. "I want to be able to control everything (on the court) and be more aggressive," Mayes said about what he wants to improve upon heading into his senior season. "I want to learn to never take a play off." *Junior-to-be Marqise Lee is another reason to like the team at Serra of Gardena. In California Supreme Red's victory over the D.C. Assault at the GBOA Challenge of Champions, the 6-footer scored 10 points and did a lot of positive things that don't show up in the scorebook. In addition to senior transfer Keith Shamburger, the Cavaliers have two more talented players in its junior class, 6-foot-8 Ronnie Stevens and 6-foot-9 Kevin Johnson. Johnson is an intriguing prospect who has the tools to be a high-major player, but he needs to work on his physical conditioning. *Fast-riser James Johnson, playing for coach Jim Harrick on the Pump N' Run Elite team at the Adidas Super 64, told us he will play his senior season at Elsinore High School in the Inland Empire after spending his junior season at Morse of San Diego. In an entertaining and highly-competitive game against the Atlanta Celtics, the 6-foot-8 Johnson threw down a resounding dunk in traffic that woke up the crowd and college coaches alike. Johnson has good quick post moves and is an underrated shot blocker. We've even heard some whispers from national scouts that if Johnson (who lists his favorites as Arizona, Maryland, Texas, UConn and Cal) wouldn't have arrived on the national scene so late, he'd be viable candidate for the 2010 McDonald's All-American Game in Columbus, Ohio.(Read full post) CA, basketball, Jordin Mays, Jamaal Franklin, Super 64, Tony Wroten Jr., Craig Robinson, Joe Burton, Jeremy Franklin, Shabazz Muhammed, Gelaun Wheelwright
Cal Supreme Takes Create-N-Finish Cup July 25, 2009 3:31 PM On Thursday & Friday, Pool Play heated up at the various sites of the four tournaments being held in Las Vegas during the second 10-day evaluation period of July. There were scattered thundershowers all week in Sin City, but the action was non-stop. It appears the best overall tournament in terms of quality teams is the Adidas Super 64. We caught some of the action at Rancho High School on Thursday and checked out the Center Stage Tournament presented by StarVision Sports on Friday afternoon. We completed our day at the Create-N-Finish Cup that was captured by an AAU team from Southern California. By Ronnie Flores, Senior Editor Even with Jeremy Tyler about to embark on a journey through Europe before his hopeful final destination, specifically the 2011 NBA Draft, his former AAU team seems to be just fine without his 6-foot-11 body planted in the middle. Last summer, Tyler helped the California Supreme take home the tourney title at the Main Event. This year, that tournament is down in terms of talented teams, and the Cal Supreme is competing at the Reebok Summer Championships where the stakes are said to be a little higher. So far, it looks like they are not missing a beat, as Cal Supreme rolled to a 75-55 victory over Texas Bluchips Navy in the championship game of the Create-N-Finish Cup on Friday night. The mini-tournament at Foothill High School pitting the top eight seeded teams at the Reebok Summer Championships was more of a coronation that a competition to see which teams would emerge as the favorite to capture the open division title on Sunday night. The California Supreme jumped out to an early lead and never let up. Point guard Gary Franklin Jr. (Mater Dei, Santa Ana) led the way for Cal Supreme with 15 points. The six-foot point guard continued to show why he's the most talented player in the Summer Championships consistently playing at a high level. Some prospects are perhaps just as talented and even ranked higher, but Franklin Jr. plays within the context of winning better than any player at this tournament. He's been stroking the long-range shots with solid accuracy, hitting three of six three-pointers in the title game, but he feels he can do more. "I am going to get people involved early and then try to hit my open shots," Franklin Jr. said after the mini-tournament championship game on Friday night. " As a bigger guard I also want to rebound more." Cal Supreme took an early 9-2 lead on a follow up basket by post-grad Jamaal Franklin (Serrano, Phelan), but the Texans came roaring back and trialed 12-10 with 11:30 remaining in the first half. Cal Supreme then surged again, building a 21-10 lead after a triple by Franklin Jr.(Read full post) ca, basketball, Gary Franklin, July evaluation, Mater Dei, California Supreme, Keala King, DeAndre Daniels, Belmont Shore, Jordan Salley
Vegas Starts Out With a Bang July 23, 2009 3:49 AM By Ronnie Flores, Senior Editor Henderson, Nev. -- With Reebok cutting its Summer Championships tournament by one day, the majority of the college coaches and national media began their five-day Sin City trek at the GBOA (Grassroots Basketball Association of America) Challenge of Champions. The GBOA event, held at Henderson International School on the home court of defending FAB 50 national champion Findlay Prep, featured many of the nation's top travel ball teams regardless of shoe affiliation. On Tuesday night, the GBOA, which prides itself on trying to bring the divisive organizations that control AAU basketball together, held a GBOA Hall of Fame Induction at the Palms Hotel. The GBOA organization honored summer basketball pioneer Sonny Vaccaro with the Grassroots Pioneer award. Vaccaro has been involved with high-level high school basketball since his days as a Special Ed middle and high school teacher in Pittsburgh during the mid 1960's. The banquet also honored grassroots basketball legends Rafer Alston (who played his AAU ball for the New York Panthers and also is coaching them in Las Vegas) and 1990's prep All-Americans Shaheen Holloway (St. Patrick's Elizabeth, N.J.) and Shareef Abdur-Rahim (Wheeler, Marietta, Ga.). GBOA honored these summer basketball legends to help raise money for Coaches versus Cancer. On Wednesday morning, the action got underway as a flock of college coaches hit Henderson International School, including Pittsburgh's Jamie Dixon, Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, new USC coach Kevin O'Neil and Florida International's Isaiah Thomas. Prep Notes With A Twist July 20, 2009 3:25 AM Going on vacation is never enough to escape California high school sports from invading one's thoughts. Plus, all-state basketball player Keala King switches to Mater Dei and top baseball coach from Riverside resigns. By Mark Tennis, Executive Editor You might think going on a 10-day summer trip to New England and New York City would allow for someone to completely forget about California high school sports. As usual, though, no matter where I go, the state's greatness is never too far removed. In Boston, a sports-crazed town if there ever was one, you get right into the Ted Williams Tunnel almost as soon as you've gotten the rental car at Logan International. This led me to rattle off to my family all of the many other Boston pro sports legends who went to California high schools – Bill Russell, K.C. Jones, Paul Pierce, Dennis Johnson, Harry Hooper, Joe Cronin, Bobby Doerr, Dom DiMaggio, Fred Lynn, Dustin Pedroia, Tom Brady, Tedy Bruschi, the list goes on and on. After the first night in Boston, I found out in the next morning's newspaper about the major league debut of Aaron Bates for the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Bates is a 2002 grad from Archbishop Mitty of San Jose, which I knew was probably going to be named our State School of the Year later that week. Here were some other moments on vacation in which it was impossible to inhibit my California high school knowledge: ... Girls of Summer: Tip-Off 2009 July 16, 2009 3:42 AM We promise to uncover some newly blossoming stars and diamonds in the rough in this year's Girls of Summer, our detailed series of reports on the girls basketball AAU scene that has become a must-read for West Coast colleges and their followers. In our first installment, it appears there will be a delivery on that promise to uncover some of the gems in the Class of 2012, 2013, and more. By Harold Abend, Special to CalHiSports.com If what we saw in the first week the CalHiSports.com caravan hit the road is any indication, there are going to be a lot of new faces emerging on the girls' basketball scene, and soon. Most of the top California and national teams spent the first week-and-a-half of the July 6-31 NCAA Summer 2009 Women's Certified viewing period either in Oregon at the July 6-9 End of the Trail or in the Chicago area for the July 11-14 Nike Summer Showcase at The Centre of Elgin in Illinois. While teams like Russ Davis' Cal Swish Black, who made both tourneys and played an exhibition on the one off day, went on the big circuit and hit both events, CalHiSports.com caught a certified event in San Diego and one in Costa Mesa, where we also witnessed the Swish Black exhibition game on July 10, their one half-day off. The week started at the EBO/SOL Viewing Tournament at Alliant International University in San Diego hosted by SOL and managed by SOL's Jennie Harris and EBO's Director and Bishop's of La Jolla coach Marlon Wells. Approximately 150 girls representing 14 club teams mainly from Southern California competed in an eight-team Varsity Division and a six-team Elite Division. The Elite championship was won by EBO Black in a 50-37 victory over Cal Sparks Silver. The fact Mt. Miguel (Spring Valley) coach and EBO Black Coach Robbie Sandoval's squad won was no surprise. It was who they played in the title game that was the surprise and offered the Girls of Summer an opportunity to uncover the first new faces on our summer journey. In fact, the win by EBO Black avenged a 44-42 loss to the upstart Sparks Silver earlier in the tournament. Incoming Mt. Miguel senior and Eastlake (Chula Vista) transfer Yvonte Neal led EBO with 15 points followed by nine points by Matadores' Danielle Miller (2011).(Read full post) CA, basketball, girls basketball, girls of summer, windward, Yvonte Neal, Brianna Martinez, Marilyn Naderhoff, Kristen Simon, Courtney Jaco, Carol Powell
Harrigan steps down from S.F. powerhouse July 1, 2009 10:27 PM One of state's winningest girls hoop coaches resigns at Sacred Heart Cathedral, which in 2008 had the No. 1 team in the nation. He leaves just three wins shy of 600th milestone victory. By Harold Abend, Special to CalHiSports.com After 28 years, the last 19 at San Francisco's Sacred Heart Cathedral, California girls basketball coaching legend Brian Harrigan has decided to change gears. He announced on Tuesday he would be resigning his post at Sacred Heart Cathedral, but told CalHiSports.com on Wednesday that he could return to coaching at a later date. "A lot of people don't realize or forget how long it's been,” said Harrigan, who began his career in 1981 as a 23-year-old girls coach at the old St. Rose Academy in San Francisco. What a lot of people also don't realize is if St. Rose had not been forced to close after suffering irreparable damage in the 1989 San Francisco earthquake that also halted the Bay Bridge World Series, the affable Harrigan may never have landed a mile west at Sacred Heart Cathedral. He did, and the rest is history. Harrigan leaves behind a legacy of four CIF state championship teams, six Northern Regional titles, 10 consecutive Central Coast Section crowns, and a 597-174 record for the 2006 State Coach of the Year, and the 2009 National High School Coaches Association Girls Basketball Coach of the Year. Branson girls should be fine under new coach July 1, 2009 2:40 PM NorCal basketball power shows it still has plenty of pop at Golden Gate Summer Shootout. By Harold Abend, Special to CalHiSports.com Before hitting the road next week for the NCAA Summer Certified Event viewing period, where we try uncovering California girls basketball players not on any of the major radar screens, we decided to stay close to home for the 14th Annual Golden Gate Summer Shootout The June 27-28 event, managed by former Redwood of Larkspur Athletic Director Jim Halm and with proceeds benefiting his non-profit organization's Education Assistance Fund, found 24 boys teams and six girls teams competing at a combined five gyms throughout Marin County. Teams from as far away Reno, Merced, Sacramento, Roseville and San Jose competed in the boys division, while all of the girls' teams were from the Redwood Empire with the exception of Albany. With events spread out over so many venues and temperatures well into the 100s outside and just as hot if not hotter in the gyms, CalHiSports.com decided to focus on a few of the top Redwood Empire teams and players in action. California Dominates 2009 NBA Draft June 29, 2009 10:13 PM After getting eight of the first 32 in the first-round of the MLB Draft, the Golden State shows its strength in basketball by having five of the first 21 picks in the NBA. By Ronnie Flores, Managing Editor Sure, there are other places in America that have produced more household NBA names such as New York and Michigan. But it's no secret that the state of California, and in particular the greater Los Angeles area, is quickly catching up to its East Coast counterparts when it comes to producing top basketball talent. This was clearly evident last Thursday at the NBA Draft in New York City when California products dominated the proceedings and the hoopla that surrounds the annual event. The five players that graduated from California high schools tied the record for most Golden State products taken in a single first round. That scenario last took place at the 1997 NBA Draft and first occurred in 1979. Former Artesia of Lakewood standout James Harden, a 6-foot-5 sophomore out of Arizona State, was the first Golden State native to be selected when the Oklahoma City Thunder took him at No. 3. Despite what was considered a sub par showing in the NCAA Tournament, the Thunder couldn't pass up Harden's combination of talent, work ethic and high character, the latter which seems to be a more important factor in professional sports drafts each year. Harden, whose bowtie generated a slew of reactions from lifestyle editors and bloggers, became the highest California product taken since Tyson Chandler was the No. 2 pick out of Dominguez of Compton in 2001. Harden's journey to the NBA has humble beginnings as he wasn't the most athletic kid growing up, to say the least, entering Artesia as a 5-foot-11, 155-pounder with average skills and a burning desire to become a better player.(Read full post) basketball, CA, James Harden, Artesia, DeMar DeRozan, Compton, Brandon Jennings, Oak Hill Academy, Darren Collison, Jeff Pendergraph, Etiwanda
2008-09 Stories of the Year: Tyler’s Tale is Tops June 20, 2009 2:00 AM Basketball star Jeremy Tyler's decision to turn pro after his junior year at San Diego High was the most talked about story in the state during the 2008-09 school year. Other stories among our top 15 include Sacramento Grant's historic win over Long Beach Poly in the CIF Open Division state football bowl game and one of the most stunning upsets any team in any sport in state history has ever pulled off. By Mark Tennis & Ronnie Flores Contributing: Paul Muyskens 1. Jeremy Tyler Leaves High School For Pros This one is a no-brainer at the top of our list and might be the biggest story of the school year nationally, too. In a move orchestrated by summer basketball pioneer Sonny Vaccaro, San Diego High's Jeremy Tyler, a 6-foot-11 junior who previously committed to Louisville, decided to skip his senior season of high school to play professionally in Europe for two years before entering the 2011 NBA Draft. One year earlier, Vaccaro aided EA SPORTS National Player of the Year Brandon Jennings in skipping college to play professional ball overseas, but Tyler's decision was different and drew stronger reactions since he actually has not yet finished high school. Recently, Las Vegas High baseball sensation Bryce Harper decided to skip his final two years of high school so there is no telling where this trend is headed. While many in the local basketball community opposed Tyler's move, it was pretty obvious he was not going to finish his prep career at San Diego High, regardless. What happened with the Cavers and the players that were supposed to be playing alongside Tyler is another story. 2. Grant Wins First CIF Open Division Bowl Game One of the biggest stories of the 2007-2008 school year came when the CIF Federated Council approved the expansion of the CIF State Championship Bowl Games from three to five games for the 2008 season. It wasn't much of a surprise, but two events that transpired from that decision were eye-openers, that's for sure. The first came when Sac-Joaquin Section Div. II champion Grant of Sacramento was selected to play in the Open Division bowl game, which was created to pit the best team in Northern California versus the best from SoCal regardless of enrollment. Grant's selection proved the CIF Bowl Games were not just created for an annual match up of De La Salle of Concord versus the best Southern California has to offer. Second, Grant showed the prep football world that quality football in Northern California does exist outside the Spartans' legendary program, as they upset a Long Beach Poly team that was looking to become the first program to win a CIF state championship in the early era (1915-1927) and the modern CIF bowl game era. With its 25-20 victory, Grant was the first victorious NorCal team in the expanded bowl game setup. And to say that Grant's win boosted the prestige of the entire Sacramento community would be an understatement. It is arguably the biggest win any team in the city's history has ever had.(Read full post) CA, basketball, Jeremy Tyler, San Diego, Renardo Sidney, Fairfax, football, Mike Alberghini, Grant, Dalton Dyer, Placer
Fitting finales for Cherry & Rogers June 15, 2009 5:16 PM Last prep basketball outings for Will Cherry and Tierra Rogers in Battle of the Best Showdowns on Saturday are sensational. Numerous top underclass players also shine in event that pitted North vs. South and Sac vs. Bay in boys & girls all-star games. By Harold Abend, Special to CalHiSports.com There was both a men's Big Sky and women's Pac-10 coach whose incoming freshmen shone brightly last weekend at Laney College in Oakland. The event was the Battle of the Best Showdown North vs. South and Sac vs. Bay put on by affable Piedmont girls coach Bryan Gardere. Standing next to his car prior to the event, dressed neatly but casually, wearing a backpack and talking on his cell phone, Will Cherry looked like just another student arriving for a weekend class at Laney. The difference between the former ESPN RISE CalHiSports.com Boys State Athlete of the Week and other young men at Laney that day was Cherry wasn't there to take classes, he was there to give lessons. In his last high school game, and on what is almost his home away from home, having played on four straight OAL (Oakland Section) teams that won championships on the floor, Cherry soared and the crowd roared, as he led the North and the Bay to 115-99 and 109-103 victories over the South and Sac teams, respectively. ... Successful California Trip for Nation's No. 1 Recruit June 5, 2009 2:15 PM Ames, Iowa product solidifies his status as ESPNU 100 top-rated prospect at Pangos All-American Camp in Long Beach. Read below to learn more about this unique player who spent nearly a week in the Golden State, which included two unofficial recruiting visits and another special day. By Ronnie Flores, Senior Editor Participating at a showcase camp some 1,700 miles from home, it's not a surprise the nation's top high school basketball recruit would get minimal time for himself or any private moments with his immediate family. It's doubly hectic when that special player lives in a Midwest town of 60,000, not a usual basketball hotbed, and comes from a city with a huge craving for a hometown hoops hero at the local university. Think the fact his mother works at that same university and his father was the breakthrough recruit for the school's all-time winningest coach over 25 years ago doesn't add to the hoopla and speculation surrounding the No. 1 player in the ESPNU 100? Welcome to the world of Harrison Barnes, a 6-foot-6 small forward from Ames, Iowa. Barnes is in the midst of a whirlwind week, having traveled from his home in Ames to Long Beach, Calif., where he was named Most Outstanding Player at the three-day Pangos All-American Camp last weekend. The rest of his week is filled with unofficial visits to two of the many programs that would love to ink his letter of intent this fall, or perhaps next spring. "Sometimes when he meets people, he has to give them a pronunciation of where he's from (yes I-O-W-A)," remarked his mother Shirley Barnes, a doting mother of two who is employed by Iowa State University. "Harrison was born and raised in Iowa and has love for the people from there. He's very proud of where he's from." Barnes did nothing to diminish his standing in Long Beach. He set the bar high right off the bat Friday, for the other 120 campers, with his intensity. He concluded the Pangos event on Sunday with a 26-point, eight-rebound performance that included the go-ahead free throw in his team's 121-118 comeback victory. It was a special weekend indeed and not just because what transpired on the court.(Read full post) basketball, CA, IA, Harrison Barnes, Ames, Pangos All-American Camp, Jordan Hamilton, shirley barnes
Cream of the Crop Emerges at Pangos June 1, 2009 4:48 AM The players deemed the best of the best, as determined by a selected panel of scouts in attendance including CalHiSports.com, were selected to play in the two Cream of the Crop All-Star Games at the conclusion of the Pangos All-American Camp. Read below for a recap of the Top 25 and Top 50 All-Star games and for our picks of the camp's top performers in a variety of categories. Woodland Hills Taft's Deandre Daniels and Ocean View's Anthony Brown are among California standouts selected to Top 25 all-star game. Top 50 all-star game selections who play well include Sheldon's Darius Nelson and J.W. North's Dominique Carr. By Ronnie Flores Senior Editor, ESPN RISE Long Beach, Calif. -- It certainly can be debated that the assembled talent at the 2009 Pangos All-American Camp was the best it's ever been in the event's seven-year history. But you won't get too many arguments from veteran observers at Cabrillo High School this weekend that the intensity and competition was the best it's ever been at the camp. It's been noted by both talent evaluators and the players that the competition has been consistent and evident from the very start, which wasn't always the case previous years at this camp. In the past, the players warmed up slowly and looked to close out Saturday strong in hopes of securing an all-star selection on the camp's final day. While there is no doubt that 6-foot-6 junior Harrison Barnes, an Ames, Iowa product and the nation's No. 1 rated player in the Class of 2010, was the most talented and consistent performer all weekend, there were other players that caught our eye and helped their standing in recruiting rankings for their respective class. The following is a list of standout performers from Saturday's evening and Sunday's morning sessions: Dwayne Polee Jr. (Westchester, Los Angeles, 2010): The longtime USC commit was impacting games with his jumping ability, as he usually does, but he's learning how to put the ball on the floor and become an offensive threat facing the basket. Polee's jumper still needs polish, but he had a few nice dribble drives to the basket where he finished with his left hand. If the 6-foot-7 wing can continue to show improvement in that area, he could become the state's biggest threat on both ends of the floor next season. He was selected, but did not play, in the Top 25 all-star game. Will Barton (Lake Clifton-Eastern, Baltimore, Md., 2010): Not many players in the national class of 2010 have as polished a game as this Charm City player. The 6-foot-6 Barton has a great all-around feel with above average shooting skills and a solid handle in the open court. He could improve his strength, but Barton still made an impact every time we saw him in action. He even started one game with an impressive spin move that turned into a thunderous dunk after the jump ball.(Read full post) basketball, CA, boys basketball, Harrison Barnes, Deandre Daniels, Joe Jackson, Anthony Brown, Darius Nelson, Dominique Carr
Pangos All-American Camp Starts With A Bang May 31, 2009 4:11 AM Iowa standout proves his new ESPNU No. 1 ranking is legit, but some from California make their marks as well, led by Gary Franklin of Mater Dei and Keala King of Dominguez. By Ronnie Flores Senior Editor, ESPN RISE Long Beach, Calif. -- When Belmont Shore won the Reebok Summer Championships in the summer of 2007, head coach Dinos Trigonis admitted that he often grows very close to the players he coaches in AAU ball, perhaps to a fault when it comes to maintaining structure and discipline. Despite the laid back atmosphere of the Pangos All-American Camp, Trigonis decided to light a fire under the 120 players who descended upon Cabrillo High School on Friday night for his seventh annual event. "I see lot of players who claim to be Rodney Dangerfields (those that think they get no respect in national player rankings)," remarked Trigonis, the camp's founder and director. "But who's going to step up? Where are you at Class of 2010? This is the time." Often times at this three-day event, the campers use Friday evening's camp games as a warm up session and pick up their level of play the following day. That wasn't the case this year as the campers came out and competed with a high intensity level right away. One player who made an immediate impact was 6-foot-9 James Johnson (Morse, San Diego, 2010). Although he is a tad out of shape from where he wants to be, Johnson's strong body translates well as a combo forward on the mid-major to low-high major level. The first aspect of his game that stands out is his offensive efficiency. When he catches the ball, he is in proper triple threat position and is a threat to make his move toward the basket in either direction. He also has good court awareness, fills the lane and has good hands to boot. ... Prep Notes With A Twist May 30, 2009 1:52 PM Who will be No. 1 in baseball now? It could be back to Mater Dei after Monarchs take out Norco in CIFSS playoffs combined with Yucaipa losing to Huntington Beach. Check this post as well for details on why top pole vaulters are going to miss the CIF state track meet, learn about some amazing athletes honored on Thursday night at EA SPORTS in Redwood City and updates on Californians going for spots on the USA Basketball Under-16 Junior National Team. By Mark Tennis, Executive Editor Contributing: Paul Muyskens, Ronnie Flores Well, we have to admit that for spectacle purposes it sure would have been fun for the CIF Southern Section Division I baseball title game to have turned out to be a matchup between Norco and Capistrano Valley of Mission Viejo. This would have meant a probable pitching duel between two of the very best in nation in Norco's Matt Hobgood and Capo Valley's Tyler Matzek. While Matzek's team got through its quarterfinal game on Friday with ease, Norco did not. The Cougars lost to Mater Dei of Santa Ana, 7-4, and Hobgood was victimized by two home runs by Mater Dei's Cory Hahn, including a grand slam. Even though Norco entered the game as the top-seeded team in the division and was No. 2 overall in the state, you can't call it an upset since this is the same Mater Dei team that won the championship in April of the Anderson Bat National Classic. You can call it an upset, though, what happened to No. 1 Yucaipa. The T-Birds also lost on Friday, but in their case it was nightmarish afternoon in a 10-2 loss to Huntington Beach. The Oilers came into the game at just 18-13. Yucaipa's season ended at 27-3. If Mater Dei (24-5), which now plays Edison of Huntington Beach (23-5) in the semifinals on Tuesday, were to combine a CIFSS Division I title with the National Classic crown it would be very difficult indeed for the Monarchs not to also be No. 1 in the state. They have been in that slot twice previously this season, but a little technicality such as not winning the Trinity League title (JSerra did instead) had dropped them down entering the playoffs. ... 1980s Hoops All-Staters in the News May 25, 2009 4:00 PM By Ronnie Flores, Senior Editor While watching a recent NBA playoff game, we noticed the TNT broadcasting crew had mentioned referee Violet Palmer as the first female official to work an NBA playoff game in 2006. Back in 1997, along with Denise Kantner, she became one of the first two females ever to referee in a regular season NBA game. Thumbing through the pages of the newest edition of the CalHiSports.com State Record Book and Almanac, we were looking at some of the first all-state teams for girls basketball. For the 1981-1982 season, Palmer's name immediately stuck out like a sore thumb. The 5-foot-8 backcourt ace pumped in 19.5 ppg for the Compton High Tarbabes that season and later helped Cal-Poly Pomona win back-to-back Div. II NCAA titles.(Read full post) CA, basketball, Cheryl Miller, Reggie Miller, Violet Palmer, Jackie Rogers, Danielle Viglione, all-state
Prep Notes with a Twist May 24, 2009 5:43 PM Softball career home run record updates highlight this week's installment. Also included in the state's best prep notes column are basketball features involving the NBA Draft Lottery and its California connections and the O.J. Mayo saga, notes from the recent NorCal Nike Camp and Combine plus more. By Ronnie Flores, Senior Editor Contributing: Harold Abend, Mark Tennis New Softball Slugging Queens Crowned Over the past two seasons, there has been an unusual amount of movement at the top of the career softball home run list, meaning big changes are in store for the next printed edition of the ESPN RISE CalHiSports.com State Record Book and Almanac. Not only did the top spot for season and career leaders fall by the wayside this year, but more than one girl passed the top two career leaders. Kaila Shull (Elliot Christian, Lodi) and Perelini Koria (San Pedro) each hit 45 round-trippers, Shull from 2003-2006 and Koria from 2005-2008. The single season mark was shattered by Shannon Colquitt (King-Drew Medical Magnet, Los Angeles) out of South Central LA, who bombed 27 this season to obliterate the mark of 19 set last season by Alia Williams of Coliseum League rival Crenshaw. With 42 total, Colquitt moved up on the career list and into the top 10. As for Williams, she blasted 16 this season to go with 37 previous homers, so she now occupies the top spot in the career column with 53 having left the house. Another girl who moved up on the list is this week's ESPN RISE CalHiSports.com State Girls Athlete of the Week, Shawna Wright of Lancaster. Coming into this season, she had 36 home runs and hit 14 this year to give her an even 50 with her career now complete. Another girl still in action in the CIF Southern Section playoffs with 51 career long taters is Bailie Kirker of Crescenta Valley in La Crescenta. She hit her 14th of the season last week for the 24-1 Eagles in a victory over Glendale. On Thursday, in a 3-1 Div. III victory over Summit of Fontana, the Arizona-bound Kirker hit her 15th and No. 51 in her career. Should Crescenta Valley win out and capture the CIFSS Div. III title that would mean Kirker would get swings in three more games on top of their upcoming second round match-up on May 26 against St. Bonaventure on the road in Ventura. There could be another change at the top and very soon.(Read full post) Prep Notes, CA, basketball, softball, Shannon Colquitt, Derrick Taylor, James Harden, O.J.Mayo, Shea Cotton
Academic All-American Classic: Nelson, Cunningham Shine May 10, 2009 7:27 AM UCLA-bound forward Reeves Nelson of Modesto Christian and Oregon State-bound Jared Cunningham of San Leandro lead West All-Stars to victory over East All-Stars at Feinberg Academic All-American Basketball Classic. In North-South All-Star Game, Parade All-American from Duncanville, Texas leads victorious North All-Stars in game where no California player hits double figures in scoring. Read below for recap of Saturday night's event. By Ronnie Flores, Senior Editor Mother's Day fell on a Sunday this year, but on Saturday night the mothers of 40 of the nation's finest high school boys basketball players got an early gift as their sons were rewarded for their academic and athletic excellence. The participants in the inaugural Feinberg Academic All-American Basketball Classic were all standouts in the classroom that carry a 3.0 G.P.A or higher. They didn't disappoint their mothers with their classroom work ethic and likewise didn't disappoint on the court as two Pac-10 bound Californians led the West All-Stars to an exciting 92-79 victory over the East All-Stars at Citizen's Bank Arena in Ontario. "We came to have fun and wanted to get the crowd into it," said Jared Cunningham (San Leandro), who scored a game-high 17 points for the West club on eight of 13 shooting and also contributed three blocks and two steals. "This was a great event to come to." Cunningham was a second team all-state pick and is bound for Oregon State, but it was another Pac-10 bound all-state second teamer, UCLA-bound Tyler Honeycutt (Sylmar), that gave the West All-Stars a quick boost by scoring the first two baskets of the game. The bigger West team was able to leak out Honeycutt on the break and he used his stellar length and athleticism to finish around the rim. He scored three of the first four field goals and helped the West unit build a 9-0 lead.(Read full post) Academic All-American Classic, CA, TX, basketball, boys basketball, Tyler Honeycutt, Reeves Nelson, Jared Cunningham, Roger Franklin
Prep Notes With A Twist May 3, 2009 12:15 AM At least four CIF sections vote to oppose regional football bowl game plan. Plus, H1N1 virus causes school to halt athletics, Orange Lutheran basketball coach dies, NFL Draft rewind, reaction to Jeremy Tyler's decision and more from the best prep notes column in the state. By Mark Tennis & Paul Muyskens At the CIF state basketball championships in March, CIF executive director Marie Ishida seemed confident that a proposal would pass in May that would add a regional round of games to the CIF state football bowl lineup. The proposal, which comes before the CIF Federated Council next week, calls for there to be a Northern and Southern Regional bowl game to determine the finalists for the actual CIF state bowl games, which expanded to five divisions last December. Under the plan, the new regional games would take place for 2010 after the second year of the five divisional format is completed this December. At least four of the 10 CIF sections, however, have indicated through votes of their governing boards in the last two weeks that they will vote no on the plan and one of the those four is the massive CIF Southern Section. The CIFSS Council, in fact, unanimously instructed its representatives on the CIF Federated Council to vote against the plan. On Tuesday earlier this week, the CIF San Diego Section followed, although that vote was not unanimous. It has also been learned that the CIF North Coast Section and the CIF Central Coast Section's governing boards have voted to oppose the regional play-in games. With the CIFSS in the no column and being so large with more votes on the CIF Federated Council than any other section, it doesn't take much of a coalition of sections to agree in order for a proposal to pass or fail. And with the CIFSS apparently joined by the CCS, NCS and San Diego, the plan seems to be not likely to pass. Those sections that are reportedly in favor of the proposal are the Sac-Joaquin Section, Central Section and L.A. City Section. ... 2009 All-State Grid-Hoop Teams April 28, 2009 4:10 PM The top statewide honor for football-basketball dual-sport prowess goes to L.A. Jordan's James Boyd, but it wasn't an easy selection and he should get to know the runner-up very well in college. We have a first team of five athletes, then a second team, a third team and 18 who made the cut for fourth team special mention. Note: All selections based on performances during 2008 football season and 2008-09 basketball season. For the ESPN RISE Grid-Hoop All-Americans, please follow the links on the ESPN RISE main index. First Team James Boyd (Jordan, Los Angeles) In a close call over Kevin Greene of S.F. Sacred Heart Cathedral, Boyd would be the 2009 Grid-Hoop State Player of the Year. Last week, he was the only Californian to be named an ESPN RISE Grid-Hoop First-Team All-American after dominating on both sides of the football field and averaging over 20 points and 20 rebounds per game on the court. Boyd had a season high 575 yards passing with eight touchdowns in a win over South Gate as he passed for 4,266 yards and 44 touchdowns on the year. Not taking time off while on defense, the 6-5, 225-pounder also led the team in sacks with 14. Boyd averaged 26 points and reportedly led the state in rebounding with 22 per game. He was an all-state selection in both sports and will head to play football at USC where he will team up with fellow grid-hooper Kevin Greene to make a fierce defensive end tandem. Jamaal Franklin (Serrano, Phelan) He's out there in the desert, but Jamaal's accomplishments in both sports have not gone unnoticed. In basketball, he easily earned Division II All-State honors in as he averaged 31.7 points, 15.4 rebounds, and three assists per game and will head to San Diego State to continue his basketball career. In football, Franklin, a 6-5, 180-pounder, shined on defense with over 100 tackles and was known for his hard hits from the safety position. He also had 30 receptions and eight touchdowns on offense. At San Diego State, Franklin will be joined by Cal Hi Sports Mr. Basketball Kawhi Leonard and Chase Tapley from Sacramento, which makes the Aztecs an interesting team to see how they develop in the years to come. Kevin Greene (Sacred Heart Cathedral, S.F.) Despite looking like he's played football all his life, he finished a two-year reign of terror against opposition quarterbacks with a reported 28-sack senior season after 22 sacks his junior season, which was his first. In basketball, Greene set a Division III state championship game record with 20 rebounds as the Irish picked up a 62-55 victory over Ocean View for their first state title, wrapping up a four-year varsity run with Division III all-state honors. The 6-4, 235-pounder is headed to play football for Pete Carroll and the USC Trojans but would like to play basketball for the Trojans if they allow him. He was named last week to the ESPN RISE Grid-Hoop Second-Team All-American. Allan Huddleston (Merced) On the court or football field, Huddleston was someone who wanted the ball in his hands, as he played quarterback and was second in the state in scoring on the basketball court. He passed for 1,391 yards and 15 touchdowns while rushing for 423 yards and six touchdowns as the Bears won nine in a row before losing to St. Mary's of Stockton in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I semifinals. In basketball, the 6-1, 175-pounder averaged 31.5 points per game and almost single-handedly carried the Bears through the playoffs despite being double and triple-teamed at times. He scored a season-high 50 points against UCLA-bound Reeves Nelson and Modesto Christian and will be staying somewhat local for college as he heads to the University of the Pacific in Stockton. ... L.A. City Section Second to None April 26, 2009 11:54 PM The CIF L.A. City Section again shows why it has no peer when it comes to boys basketball in California as that section's all-stars defeat the CIF Southern Section, 113-109, at the Collision XI All-Star game that pits many of the CIF Southern Section's best players against their CIF L.A. City Section counterparts. The girls game, however, goes to the CIFSS, led by CalHiSports.com Ms. Basketball Layshia Clarendon. By Ronnie Flores CalHiSports.com Managing Editor Torrance -- Since the advent of the modern state basketball tournament in 1982, it's been no secret that the L.A. City has been California's dominant section with a sterling 17-1 record in the CIF Div. I boys state title game. On Saturday night, the CIF L.A. City Section again showed its strength in boys hoops with a thrilling 113-109 victory over the CIF Southern Section at Collision XI on the campus of El Camino College. In a game pitting all-star players from each section, this year's City versus Southern Section classic had arguably the best collection of talent in the event's 11-year history and with the four-point win, the City took a 6-5 series lead over its Southern Section counterparts. Leading the way for a balanced City Section club was MVP Tyler Honeycutt of Sylmar, a second team CalHiSports.com all-state choice. The UCLA bound forward finished with an effortless 18 points, on nine of 10 shooting from the field, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. When he made the highlight play of the first half, a one-handed tip dunk with his off-hand, the L.A. City Section took a 51-32 lead with 4:16 remaining before intermission and seemingly was on its way to an easy victory. "They were bigger than us, but when we scrimmaged them we knew we could outrun them," Honeycutt remarked. "We took a lead, but that's when Jordan Hamilton started going to work." Collision XI marked the Southern California return of Hamilton, the Dominguez of Compton product who sat out the 2008-2009 season after the CIF Southern Section ruled he had exhausted his high school eligibility. The No. 8 prospect in the ESPNU 100 and bound for Texas University, Hamilton earlier this month played in the Jordan Brand Classic at New York's Madison Square Garden. Hamilton wanted to put on a show in front of the Southern California basketball community and show his appreciation for being selected to play in an all-star event even though he did not suit up for the Dons this season. He did just that with an individual performance that helped the Southern Section get into the game after quickly falling behind because of the City's trademark aggressive, running, attack-the-basket style of play. ...
