County, portions of Western San Bernardino County plus the Glendale/Pasadena region north of downtown Los Angeles. Our upcoming all-CIFSS Ventura-Santa Barbara-San Luis Obispo team will conclude our preseason player and team previews. Next week we'll begin our regular weekly state top 25, CIF Bowl Game and regional rankings schedule plus stat stars and athletes of the week. Make sure you follow us at twitter.com/calhisports as we'll do our best to give you live updates from the big games we attend all season long. You can also follow us on Facebook. Please join our Facebook group by CLICKING HERE Offense WR -- Kenny Lawler (Upland) 6-2, 165 Soph. On this team, Lawler is the up-and-comer as many expect him to develop into one of the state's best receivers in the next couple of years. He moved into the starting lineup at Upland midway through last season and displayed great hands, leaping ability and open field moves. He's the son of former Oregon player Kenny Lawler Sr. WR -- Kenneth Scott (Colony, Ontario) 6-2, 190 Sr. This University of Utah commit caught 31 passes for 655 yards and five touchdowns for the Scots as a junior. He should surpass those numbers this year while also contributing in the defensive backfield. TE -- John Young (Loyola, Los Angeles) 6-3, 255 Sr. A big-time talent that can block and get to the open space. Young was also a standout at the Stanford Nike Camp, displaying soft hands and the ability to catch the ball in tight quarters. As a junior for the Cubs, he caught 14 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown. OT -- Augafa Vaaulu (Warren, Downey) 6-2, 285 Sr. He can play tight end and is one of the best defensive tackle prospects in the state, but he fits best at offensive tackle on this team. As a junior, he not only blew up holes for all-section back Jessie Callier, he also caught 12 passes, including a touchdown. On defense, he recorded 60 tackles and three sacks and recorded a 81.51 SPARQ Rating* at last spring's L.A. Nike Combine. Football Team-By-Team Previews (Part 14) August 21, 2009 1:01 PM One of the state's glory schools with more than 500 all-time wins is Loyola of Los Angeles and today it's the Cubs' turn to headline our latest installment of state previews. We also are taking a look today at La Costa Canyon of Carlsbad, St. Vincent of Petaluma and Whitney of Rocklin. Note: A coach or representative of the school should email or fax in a questionnaire in order for that school's team to be included in this feature. You can CLICK HERE to print out a questionnaire or make a photo copy of the one printed in the back of the seventh edition of the ESPN RISE CalHiSports.com Record Book and Almanac we sent to schools last March. If you can't print a questionnaire, review the categories below and simply fill in the blanks. We will add our own comments and analysis. Please fax completed questionnaire to (209) 463-1219 or email info to mark@studentsports.com. Team Name: Loyola (Los Angeles) Head Coach: Jeff Kearin (24-21, previously won state title at Brophy Prep in Arizona) Last Year's Records: 6-5, 8-2 for J.V. Returning Starters: 11 ( 6 offense, 5 defense) Players Most Deserving of Preseason Honors: RB/S/OLB Anthony Barr (league MVP), OL/DL Colin Tanigawa (all league), TE/DL John Young (all league), DL/OL Jordan Hanson (all league), LB/FB Bronson Green (all league) Newcomers Who Could Make An Impact: S/WR Nat Bellamy (transfer from Jesuit of Portland, Oregon), QB Jerry Neuheisel, WR/DB Kodi Whitfield, RB/DB Jared Baker, OLB Nick Nasse General Outlook: We expect our offense to be strong with Barr in the backfield and we feel Neuheisel is our best quarterback since 2005. Our defense should be tough with so many returning seniors up front and we feel like we could be the most improved team in the Pac-5 Conference. Other Teams To Watch From The Area: None Listed All-league level players with GPAs above 3.50: None Listed CalHiSports.com Comments: With so much star power this year, mainly with the return of Barr, who is one of the top recruits in the nation, it wouldn't be a stretch to say the Cubs are among the favorites to be the best team in the CIFSS Pac-Five Division. They still have much to prove in the rugged Serra League, however, especially with a 34-0 loss to Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks last year. The addition of all those newcomers also should be a huge boost. Bellamy was an all-state performer up in Oregon, Neuheisel is the son of UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel and was a joy to be around when he was a bellboy at the Elite 11 camp last month, while Whitfield is the son of former NFL lineman and one-time Student Sports Magazine coverboy Bob Whitfield. We expect to put Loyola in the preseason state top 20, just not in front of Notre Dame for sure. If they can get past the Knights, watch out in the playoffs. ... All-State Underclass Football Teams January 17, 2009 11:00 PM Sixty juniors and 30 sophomores have been selected to these elite squads. This is the first of four separate posts over the next few days honoring top California players from the 2008 season. | | | | | Scott Kurtz | | | Gardena Serra's Robert Woods is one of California's best regardless of class. | Notes: Panelists who contributed to these team selections included Mark Tennis, Ronnie Flores, Greg Biggins, Brian Stumpf. Previously announced players of the year were QB Ryan Kasdorf for juniors and RB DeAnthony Thomas for sophomores. There were no sophomores selected this year to be among the top juniors. We realize that many outstanding young players, especially the sophomores, have yet to emerge. These honors are much more based on accomplishments at the high school varsity level so far and should not be confused with a recruiting list. This is the 30th year of the CalHiSports.com all-state football teams and we have been doing all-state underclass for most of that time as well. State Stat Stars of the Week November 6, 2008 6:30 PM (For additions, corrections or to report a statistical standout we may have missed, email mark@studentsports.com. To inquire about a section or state record, please email Senior Editor Ronnie Flores at ronnie@studentsports.com or call (800) 660-1334 Ext. 4414; For games played Oct. 30- Nov. 1; Writeups by Ronnie Flores, Harold Abend, Steve Brand, Tom Shanahan, Mark Tennis & Bob Barnett) Jordan Adamczyk & Kevin Voogt (Canyon, Canyon Country): Adamczyk had a field day, completing 24 of 34 passes for 342 yards and three TDs during a 35-14 win over West Ranch of Valencia. All three of the scores went to Voogt, who finished with nine receptions for 172 yards and TDs of 45, 31 and 24 yards Michael Allain (Fullerton): Almost a weekly highlight film all by himself, Allain gained 280 yards on just 20 carries, scoring three times, in a 41-7 win over Sonora of La Habra. Usua Amanam (Bellarmine, San Jose): With the loss to Serra of San Mateo a distant memory, the Bells took it out on cross-town Mitty in a 34-10 victory with Amanam doing most of the damage. He totaled 257 all-purpose yards and scored four touchdowns in four different ways: On a 37-yard run, a 62-yard punt return, a 20-yard pass and a 90-yard interception return. Kevin Ayers (Lynwood): Knights' back and younger brother of UCLA linebacker Akeem Ayers rushed for 229 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-0 waxing of Downey High. He set the tone by scoring from 81 yards out on Lynwood's' second play from scrimmage and also scored on runs of 87 and 76 yards. The San Gabriel Valley League game was marred by a shooting that took place 10 minutes after the game was over across the street from Lynwood Middle School. Two years ago, shots also rang out after this content on the same field. Dominique Barnes (Burroughs, Burbank): Rushed for 277 yards and five touchdowns during a 56-9 Pacific League victory over Arcadia. Barnes did his damage in only 16 carries. Anthony Barr (Loyola, Los Angeles): One of the state's top junior tailbacks rushed for 216 yards on 40 carries to help the Cubs down then state-ranked Bishop Amat of La Puente, 17-6, in their Serra League opener. Amazingly, it was the Cubs' first Moore League win since 2005 as they missed the playoffs the last two seasons after winning the CIFSS Div. I title in 2005. Before the, they had been to the playoffs for 25 consecutive seasons. They want to start another streak starting this season. Josh Brannon (Pacifica, Garden Grove): Was all but unstoppable as he rushed for 245 yards and five touchdowns in Pacifica's 40-13 win over Kennedy of La Palma. Mario Brown (Bishop O'Dowd, Oakland): The explosive 5-foot-9, 165-pound junior tailback went over the 200-yard mark for the second time in three weeks in a 21-17 victory over Castro Valley. On Oct. 17 he went for 204 yards in a win against Hayward. Last week against the Trojans, Brown had a season-high 225 yards on a whopping 43 carries with three touchdowns. He now has 1,084 yards and 17 touchdowns on the season. Jesse Callier (Warren, Downey): Stat star regular was at it again during the Bears' 39-21 victory over Gahr of Cerritos. Callier helped Warren stay unbeaten in San Gabriel Valley League play by churning for 284 yards and three touchdowns, including a 87-yarder, on 28 carries. He has scored 16 TDs so far this season and has rushed for 1,633 yards. Derek Carr (Bakersfield Christian): Featured last Thursday on ESPN NEWS, Carr continued his hot hand the next day by throwing for five touchdowns for 279 yards, completing 13 of 17 passes against Shafter in a South Sequoia League game that the Eagles won, 56-7. Robert Cruz (Magnolia, Anaheim): Averaged better than 10 yards a carry as he gained 315 yards on 31 lugs and scored five touchdowns in a 41-29 win over Santa Ana Valley. He also scored once on a pass reception, gaining another 97 yards on just two catches. Deontae Cooper (Citrus Hill, Perris): Scored three times on runs and once on a 39-yard interception return in a 49-8 win over Heritage of Menifee. His TDs were 3, 10 and 65 yards as he finished with 188 yards on just 18 carries. Mike Davis (Buena, Ventura): Scampered for 242 yards on 26 rushes, including TDs of 58, 40 and four yards in a 35-10 win over San Marcos of Santa Barbara. Duke DeLancelotti (San Clemente): Although the Tritons fell to Mission Viejo, 42-37, DeLancelotti kept San Clemente close by completing 20 of 40 passes for 321 yards and three TDs. Adrian Diaz (Franklin, Los Angeles): Diaz has helped the Panthers take control of the Northern League race by passing for 310 yards during a 41-20 victory over Belmont of Los Angeles. Diaz completed 17 of 27 passes with two touchdowns and helped Franklin up its record to 6-2 and 3-0 in league play. Jonathon Diaz, Antoine Arnold & Mitch Glasmann (Chaparral, Temecula): Glasmann completed 13 of 17 passes for 202 yards and three TDs, all to Arnold, a sophomore who had seven receptions for 129 yards in a 56-14 win over Temescal Canyon of Lake Elsinore. Diaz was the sparkplug for the state-ranked Pumas, scoring four rushing touchdowns, including a 29-yard interception return that opened up the floodgates in what was a close game in the first quarter. Donovan Dodd (Desert Christian, Lancaster): Before the Mercy Rule stoppe the 8-man game in the fourth quarter of a 61-12 victory, Dodd rushed for 320 yards on 15 carries, scoring seven touchdowns. Nico Dumont (Marin Catholic, Kentfield): A driving rainstorm and blustery winds the entire game didn't bother the 6-foot, 205-pound running back/free safety in a 35-6 win on the road at Tamalpais in Mill Valley. The senior, who is getting looks from several mid-size D1 schools and reigning league MVP, rushed 15 times for 203 yards and three touchdowns on runs of 23, 46 and 89 yards. Chris Eke (Gunderson, San Jose): The biggest rushing performance in Northern California last week came from a guy with the shortest last name. In a 49-38 victory over cross-town rival Branham, Eke plowed his way for 301 yards and four touchdowns on 17 carries. He now has 1,169 yards and 16 touchdowns on the season. Daniel Enriquez (Whittier): Rushed for 287 yards and four touchdowns as Whittier defeated Pioneer of Norwalk, 41-32, to win their first Del Rio League contest of the season. Joe Ferguson & Jeff Badger (Cardinal Newman, Santa Rosa): A big reason the Cardinals are 8-0 and in control of their own destiny is because of the play of this running back/linebacker duo. Their impact was at its fullest in a 42-7 victory over a Rancho Cotate team that was supposed to be a test for Newman and its ability to stop the run. On offense the two ran roughshod over the Ranch, and on defense they neutralized the Cougars' 285-pound average line by shooting the gaps as the ball was snapped. Ferguson scored the team's first TD on a 30-yard screen pass and also scored on a 93-yard kickoff return and a 7-yard run. He also had 12 tackles from his linebacker position with two for losses. Backfield mate Badger rushed for 90 yards and one TD and also had a 32-yard interception return for a score. Badger also recorded a game-high 14 tackles with three for loss. Steve Filippi & Jake Powers (Sonoma Valley): Filippi was projected to be one of the top receivers in the Redwood Empire and although it's been a slightly disappointing season with the Dragons at 3-5, he came up big in a 28-21 upset of visiting Petaluma. With quarterback Powers throwing for 304 yards on 15-of-22 passing, Filippi pulled in 10 of the balls for 231 yards and both of Powers' touchdown passes. Ernesto Flores, Dakota Salazar, Evan Marland & Dalton Stadelman (Westwood): They really spread the ball around up there just east of Lake Almanor, but they keep it all on the ground and it showed last week in an offensive explosion. Flores, a 5-foot-10, 205-pound running back had a career game. Together with his mate's performances in a 78-32 victory over Big Valley (Bieber), it gets this tiny Lassen County community, and the Lumberjacks with their 8-0 record, on the map. Flores bulled his way to 277 yards on 15 carries with five touchdowns. Salazar ran for 152 yards and scored twice; Marland rushed to paydirt twice and Stadelman had a 59-yard touchdown. On the season the Lumberjacks as a team have rushed for 3,385 yards with a 9.81 yards per carry average. Flores leads the way with 948 yards and 13 touchdowns; Salazar has 640 yards and four scores; Marland has 583 yards and 12 TDs; and Stadelman has rushed for 432 yards with nine touchdowns and passed for 967 yards and 14 touchdowns. Tate Forcier (Scripps Ranch, San Diego): The Michigan-bound quarterback faced a defense that forced Scripps Ranch to run the ball, and Forcier responded with 455 total yards of offense in a 52-40 win. Forcier rushed for 218 yards with touchdown runs of 65 and 56 yards. He also completed 13-of-18 passes for 237 yards. All of Scripps' TDs came on the ground. Andrew Frisina (Rolling Hills Prep, San Pedro): Was all over the field during a 28-6 victory over Price of Los Angeles. He picked off a pass and returned it for a touchdown when price tried a fake punt and he also scored once on the ground during this eight-man Harbor League content. On defense, he recovered a fumble and mad 16 tackles to lead the way. Aaron Garbutt (Westminster): Rushed for 216 yards and four TDs while passing for a fifth in a 33-28 victory over Segerstrom. Zack Graves (Whitney, Rocklin): The reported rushing leader in the Sac-Joaquin Section with 1,591 yards not only had another huge game running the ball, but had a big impact in other areas as well. In a 49-0 whitewashing of El Dorado of Placerville, the 5-foot-9, 165-pound senior went over 200-yards rushing for the third time this season with 255 yards on 20 carries and three touchdowns. He added a 14-yard touchdown pass, his fifth TD pass of the season. He's also hit pay dirt 22 times on the ground to give him 28 total touchdowns. We almost forgot to tell you, he also blocked a punt against El Dorado. Zach Griffith & Brandon Dupre (Foothill, Tustin): By completing 16 of 26 passes for 304 yards, Griffith guided Foothill past Trabuco Hills of Mission Viejo, 20-15. Dupre had 147 of those yards and a TD reception. James Guerrero (Tulare): Led unbeaten team past Delano in a East Yosemite League game, 54-16, by throwing for five touchdowns on just six of seven attempts. Guerrero's TDs covered 64, 26, 20, 29, and 58 yards. He had 227 passing yards in all. Tommy Hansen (Westview, San Diego): Hansen threw for 388 yards, including the game-winning touchdown with two seconds to play to edge Rancho Bernardo, 31-28. Hansen completed 24-of-43 passes with four touchdowns and no interceptions. His four touchdown passes measured 57, 27 56 and 27 yards. Rashon Harper (El Camino Real, Woodland Hills): In only 19 carries, Harper galloped for 288 yards and scored four touchdowns in a 62-38 victory over Granada Hills. Harper gained 258 of his rushing yards in the first half and scored on runs of 61, 67, 35 and one yard. Carlos Hernandez (Orange Cove): Set a school record by rushing for 226 yards on only 10 carries, and he also scored five touchdowns against Kings Christian of Lemoore. Orange Cove won the game, 67-18. Anthony Herrera (Wilcox, Santa Clara): The Chargers have pinned a couple of losses on top Bay Area teams like Milpitas and Palo Alto and this junior running back has been a big reason why. Last week in a 42-21 victory over Mountain View of St. Francis, he rushed for 233 yards and scored all six of the team's touchdowns. Evan Houschka (Capistrano Valley Christian, San Juan Capistrano): Rolled up 225 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns in a 34-19 loss to Sage Hill of Newport Beach. Donny Huckins & Brad Underwood (Greenville): After a two week hiatus, Huckins, the Northern Section's reported rushing leader, is back in this week's stat stars feature. The senior tailback from just south of Lake Almanor ran for 279 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries, in a 50-7 victory over Liberty Christian of Redding. He now has an even 1,700 yards this season and 15 touchdowns. Underwood, an undersized center on offense and middle linebacker on defense, is reportedly leading the Northern Section with 156 tackles. Last week against Liberty Christian he had 17 tackles and a sack. The week before, in a win over Dunsmuir, he recorded a season-high 31 tackles. Besides his tackles total, Underwood has four sacks, a fumble recovery and a blocked punt this season. Jaron Hytche (Mater Dei, Santa Ana): Rushed for 227 yards and scored four touchdowns in a 57-28 Trinity League victory over Santa Margarita. Teammate Matt Barkley added 228 yards and a pair of TDs passing for the current first place team in the league standings which will need more big games from Hytche to end up league champs. Stepfton Jefferson (El Diamante, Visalia): Rushed for 226 yards on 31 carries and scored four touchdowns against Redwood in leading the Miners to a 48-15 win in a West Yosemite League game. Jemeryn Jenkins (Silverado, Victorville): Had a whopping 475 total yards, accounting for five touchdowns, but his team still fell to Burroughs of Ridgecrest, 35-33. Jenkins passed for 297 yards and ran for 178 more. Jamie Jensen & Dante Fullard (Gilroy): After a 34-28 victory on the road in Salinas against Palma, the Mustangs are 8-0, No. 4 in this week's CalHiSports.com CIF North Open Division rankings. Generally considered the best Gilroy team ever, this duo has certainly had a lot to do with the club's lofty status so far this season. Against Palma, Jensen, the Central Coast Section reported passing leader, didn't start the game for undisclosed reasons. He came in midway through the second quarter with Palma leading 14-0 and proceeded to torch the Chieftains, passing for 434 yards on 26 of 37 passes with three touchdowns. Jensen's favorite target was Fullard, who had 11 catches for 122 yards and two touchdowns. Fullard also rushed for a pair of scores. Lurrell Johnson (Lindhurst, Olivehurst): We don't know what they're feeding those boys north of the state capitol and just south of the twin cities of Marysville and Yuba City, but its working for Johnson, who makes his third straight appearance here. This past Friday, he did some trick or treating at the expense of visiting Encina of Sacramento. In a 55-18 shellacking, the 5-6, 175-pound tailback rushed for 253 yards and four touchdowns on a mere 13 carries. He now has 1,582 yards and 20 touchdowns on the season. Marshall Jones & Nick Montana (Oaks Christian, Westlake Village): Combined for 357 yards in a 54-0 win over Oak Park of Agoura Hills. Montana completed 10 of 17 for 237 yards and three TDs passing while Jones had five TDs that included four rushing (12 for 120 yards) and one pass from the son of you know who. Jamie Jordan (Rio Mesa, Oxnard): Crushed a 52-yard field goal, but it would be the only points for the Spartans in a 42-3 loss to Oxnard. Daniel Joseph (San Dimas): Rushed for 302 yards and four TDs while adding a fifth score on a reception in the Saints' 56-46 win over Baldwin Park. Joey Levine (Clayton Valley, Concord): Led the unbeaten Eagles to a 19-0 win over College Park of Pleasant Hill by completing 11 of 17 passes for 194 yards, including a 53-yard TD to Nick Cole. Levine also stars at linebacker and in the same game had five tackles with 2.5 sacks. Cole, a free safety, added nine tackles. Cameron Loeffler (Exeter): Scored five touchdowns against Coalinga on runs of 1, 14, 1, 5, 51 yards, which gave him 35 for the season, a total that leads the Central Section. He also carried the ball 25 times for 200 yards in the Central Sierra League game won by Exeter, 42-14. Malcolm Marable (Alemany, West Hills): Churned for 244 yards and scored four times in a 37-17 victory over Chaminade of Mission Hills. Three of his scores measured 25 yards or longer with one from 80 and another from 67 yards out. Taylor Martinez (Centennial, Corona): Accounted for 375 yards in a 42-19 win over J.W. North of Riverside. Martinez completed 16 of 23 for 279 yards and three TDs and rushed for another 94 on nine carries. UCLA Ricky Marvray added seven pass receptions for 148 yards for the state's No. 2 ranked club. Marquis Miller (Manteca): A junior to watch for next season, Miller ripped off a 77-yard scoring run, added another TD on a one-yard run and ended up with 238 yards on 21 carries in a game against Oakdale. It all went for naught, though, as Oakdale prevailed, 31-14, and ended any hopes for Manteca to earn a spot in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Div. IV playoffs. Mason Mills (Coronado): The senior quarterback completed 14 of 20 passes for 375 yards in a 43-10 Central League win over Kearny of San Diego. He threw four touchdown passes without an interception. His scoring tosses measured 49, 55, 8 and 20 yards. Joey Miranda (Glendale): Picked off two passes on defense and returned a kickoff 65 yards for a score during the Nitros' 28-12 victory over Glendale in Pacific League play. Stanley Moody (Tomales): We usually don't put a running back in Stat Stars when he only goes for 108 yards and one touchdown as Moody did in a 12-0 victory over Anderson Valley. We decided to include Coach Leon Feliciano's linchpin to his power running attack after missing Moody three weeks ago when he ran for 251 yards and four touchdowns in a win over Calistoga. We also missed him last week when he ran for 209 yards and one score in a half's game work against Potter Valley in a 52-0 romp. D.J. Morgan (Taft, Woodland Hills): Standout junior back headed to USC rushed for 227 yards and scored five touchdowns in a 57-14 victory over Chatsworth. QB Bam Goodall also was quite effective, completing 11 of 13 passes for 238 yards. The Toreadors' faithful hopes the duo can perform in similar fashion when they close out the regular season with a West Valley League showdown against defending L.A. City Section champion Birmingham of Lake Balboa. Johnny Murayami (St. Margaret's, San Juan Capistrano): Scored seven TDs and just missed eight in 70-6 win over Brethren Christian. Murayami scored on runs of 8, 4, 3, 7, 10 and 2 yards plus a 55-yard reception from David Mothander. He was pushed out of bounds at the 2-yard line on another run. Mothander passed for 248 yards and Murayami definitely made the most of his 152 rushing yards. Tyler Musco (Westview, San Diego): Musco caught 10 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winner with two seconds to play in the Wolverines' 31-28 win over Rancho Bernardo. Musco's scores were from 57, 56 and 27 yards out. Byron Newman (Golden Valley, Bakersfield): Set a school record by running for 303 yards on 35 carries and scored three touchdowns against Bakersfield in a Southeast Yosemite League game. Golden Valley won, 23-14. Trevor Niemann (Chadwick, Palos Verdes Peninsula): He stepped up for the Dolphins in the fourth quarter of their 10-6 Prep League victory over Pasadena Poly. He intercepted two passes during the final period of play and Niemann, who usually line up at receiver on offense, also scored on a quarterback keeper to account for the game's only touchdown. Kevin Noall (Yuba City): Did everything he could but it wasn't enough as the Honkers went down. He caught six passes for 180 yards and four touchdowns and had an interception in Yuba City's 37-32 loss to Inderkum. Brett Nottingham (Monte Vista, Danville): Very few signal callers can stretch the De La Salle secondary for over 300-yards passing, but this junior, fast becoming one of the hottest quarterback prospects in California, did just that, albeit in a 45-35 loss. In defeat, Nottingham completed 28 of 46 passes for 311 yards and four touchdowns but he was also intercepted twice. Jacob Olivas (Covina): Played a great all-around game in Covina's 41-34 come-from-behind victory over Pomona at Covina District Field. He gave the fans a nice homecoming treat by rushing for 236 yards, completing nine of 16 passes for 170 yards and accounting for six touchdowns. He score don runs of 67, 33, 54 and 12 yards and threw touchdown passes of 20 and 75 yards. Daniel Owen (L.A. Baptist, North Hills): Accounted for six touchdowns during a 49-27 victory over Valley Christian of Cerritos. He scored on a two-yard touchdown run and threw for a whopping 486 yards and five touchdowns in the shoot-out victory. His touchdown tosses measured 54, 53, 25, 9 and 83 yards. Terry Paradez (Bonita, La Verne): Tossed five touchdown passes, all in the first half, as Bonita defeated host Wilson of Hacienda Heights, 54-14. Randy Person (Cate, Carpinteria): Scored six touchdowns in leading the Rams to a 54-38 shoot-out victory over Montclair Prep of Van Nuys in 8-man football action. Cameron Phillips (Moorpark): Collected four sacks to help the Musketeers stymie normally high-scoring Agoura, 17-6. Brett Pierce & Charlie James (Brentwood, Los Angeles): In a 50-7 victory over winless Marshall of Pasadena, Pierce picked off his eighth pass of the season while James booted his 11 field goal of the season. His three-pointer came from 51-yards out to help Brentwood move to 7-1 on the year and broke the school record set by Jimmy Rotstein, now at UCLA. Donnay Ragland (Artesia, Lakewood): Accounted for 325 yards during a 23-17 overtime victory over Norwalk. Ragland crossed the goal line from 10 yards out to clinch the game in overtime as he carried the ball 11 times for 176 yards and scored two touchdowns. He also completed eight of 15 passes for 149 yards with another touchdown. Bradley Randle & Hayden Clegg (Vista Murrieta, Murrieta): The duo combined for 424 yards as Randle gained 195 rushing and scored three TDs while Clegg passed for 229 and two more six-pointers in a 42-20 win over Temecula Valley. Rashaad Reynolds (San Fernando): Three-year standout didn't have the greatest individual numbers, but he surpassed a significant career milestone by breaking the schools total yardage record set by Anthony Davis between 1968-1970. He gained 75 yards on only four rushing attempts and passed for 153 yards in a 32-14 victory over Reseda to give him 5,827 yards, which broke Davis' old mark of 5,675 yards. Davis, who like Reynolds played quarterback in high school, went on to become a two-time all-american RB at USC. Reynolds, who is also the first San Fernando QB to have three 1,000 yard seasons and is 323 yards from the school's all-time passing mark, will likely play defense in college. He helped San Fernando up its record to 3-0 in league play by picking off his third pass of the season. Ryan Sakowski, Victor Ojeda & Mat Bocci (Sacred Heart Prep, Atherton): Quarterback Sakowski was a perfect 9-for-9 passing for 162 yard, Ojeda rushed for 155 yards and two touchdowns, and Bocci scored three times on the ground in a 49-28 road victory over Carlmont of Belmont that clinches the outright title in the Peninsula Athletic League Ocean-B division. This week the team amassed 534 yards of total offense after gaining 605 two weeks ago in a win against Half Moon Bay. Andy Salcido (Baldwin Park): Had a monster night, completing 24 of 45 passes for 429 yards and four TDs, while also rushing for a TD, but it wasn't enough in a wild 56-46 loss to San Dimas. Jack Joaquin caught eight passes for 155 yards and Christian Lazaro added seven for 144 yards and three TDs. Eddy Sihavong (Mission Hills, San Marcos): Sihavong needed only 14 carries to rush for 237 yards in the Grizzlies' 42-29 win over San Pasqual in an Avocado League game. Michael Spanos (Lincoln, Stockton): The grandson of longtime San Diego Chargers' owner Alex Spanos (who lives within walking distance of the Lincoln stadium) had his best game of the season with 241 yards rushing on 19 carries in a 28-17 victory over Lodi. Spanos scored once on a 57-yard run and set up a late game-clinching touchdown with a 69-yard scamper. Daimion Stafford (Norco): Pulled in three interceptions, part of five by the Cougars, in a 28-13 win over Santiago of Corona. Eric Stern (California, Whittier): In Cal-Hi's 21-20 loss to St. Paul of Santa Fe Springs, Stern booted a 57-yard field goal, the longest reported in Southern California football so far this season. Ryan Stillwell (Leigh, San Jose): The No. 2 reported passer in the Central Cost Section did his part but the Longhorns lost 42-21 to state-ranked cross-town Oak Grove. Against the Eagles the 6-foot, 190-pound senior was 24-of-42 for 343 yards and three touchdowns. For the season, Stilwell now has passed for 2,109 yards with 20 touchdowns and only four interceptions. DeAnthony Thomas (Crenshaw, Los Angeles): Affectionately known as the "Black Mamba" by Cougars' fans, this sophomore speedster has the crowd on its feet when he returned the opening kickoff against league rival Dorsey 85 yards for a score. He also had a 32-yard interception for a score to help the Cougars take control of the Coliseum league with a 34-0 victory over the Dons. Thomas, who got his nickname for being quite slippery out on the field, who qualified for the CIF state meet in the 100 and 200 meter dash as a freshman, and used that speed to return another interception against Dorsey that was nullified by penalty. Pete Thomas (Valhalla, El Cajon): The junior quarterback with a scholarship offer from Boston College passed and kicked his team to a 28-3 win over Steele Canyon. He completed 17-of-31 passes for 256 yards. His field goals were from 33, 26, 22 and 21 yards out. Edwin Tillman (Culver City): Etched himself in our state record book with a 97-yard punt return for a score, which also set a school record. He topped his night off by hauling in a 66-yard touchdown pass from Marquel Carter that gave the Centaurs a 35-28 come-from-behind victory over Santa Monica. Gabriel Umoh (Morningside, Inglewood): Rushed for 311 yards and scored three touchdowns on 20 carries to lift The Side to a 31-14 victory over Hawthorne. Ryan Ur (Laguna Hills): His two interceptions led to touchdowns in a 24-0 win over Beckman of Irvine. He has five picks so far this season. John Uribe & Roberto Nelson (Santa Barbara): Uribe passed for 275 yards, completing 23 of 52 passes, with three TDs while Nelson was on the receiving end six times for 127 yards and two TDs. The Dons, however, were no match for St. Bonaventure of Ventura, losing 51-21. John White (South Torrance): This stat star regular had another strong game, gaining 228 yards and scoring three touchdowns during a 44-20 victory over Centennial of Compton in Pioneer League play. White hopes to have another stellar performance this week when the Spartans take on 8-0 North Torrance this week. Jonathan Williams (Kennedy, Granada Hills): Sophomore shattered the school's single-game rushing mark by galloping for 334 yards on 41 carries during a 39-6 victory over Monroe of Sepulveda. He scored three touchdowns and broke the rushing yardage mark previously held by Edwin Jones, who gained 279 yards in a win over Cleveland of Reseda in 1986. Ironically, current Kennedy head coach Dion Lambert played with Jones and the two-way star helped the Golden Cougars advance to the L.A. City Section semifinals that season, where they lost to state and national No. 1 Banning of Wilmington. Desarte Yarnway (Sacred Heart Cathedral): Cal-committed senior tailback turned in one of the season's outstanding performances in his team's 28-24 upset on the road at Valley Christian of San Jose. In a win that keeps the Irish tied for the WCAL lead and what Coach John Lee told the San Francisco Chronicle was "the biggest win in the history of the program, Yarnway out dueled Valley Christian's Cameron Marshall (155 yards) by rushing 33 times for 202 yards and four touchdowns. Included was the game-winning 15-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. CA, football, state record book, state records, stat stars, Kevin Ayers, Anthony Barr, Derek Carr, Nico Dumont, Tate Forcier
State Stat Stars of the Week October 15, 2008 11:30 PM (For additions, corrections or to report a statistical standout we may have missed, email mark@studentsports.com. To inquire about a section or state record, please email Senior Editor Ronnie Flores at ronnie@studentsports.com or call (800) 660-1334 Ext. 4414; For games played Oct. 9-11; Writeups by Ronnie Flores, Harold Abend, Steve Brand, Tom Shanahan, Mark Tennis & Bob Barnett) Nico Barbone & Daniel Joseph (San Dimas): Barbone rushed for 201 yards and 5 touchdowns while Joseph pounded away from 219 yards and a pair of TDs as San Dimas outscored Bonita of La Verne, 50-33. Barbone and Joseph led a charge that saw San Dimas rush for 454 yards against rival Bonita in the annual Smudge Pot Bowl. Behind the dynamic duos' rushing performance in front of 6,000 fans, San Dimas beat Bonita for the second consecutive year and upped its lead in the series to 19-6-1 since 1972. Anthony Barr (Loyola, Los Angeles): Some tab this 6-foot-4, 210-pounder as the top underclass back in Southern California and with the performances he's turned in so far this year it hard to argue that assertion. He probably will grow into another position on the next level, whether it be safety, linebacker or even defensive end, but for now he's punishing defenses carrying the ball. In last week's 52-14 shellacking over Hart of Newhall, Barr carried the ball six times in the first quarter and four went for touchdowns. He scored on runs of 36, 2, 28 and 56 yards and had 161 yards at that point. He was pulled in the second quarter with 199 yards to his credit on 11 carries and Loyola leading, 35-0. This week, the Cubs travel to The Pit to face St. Paul of Santa Fe Springs. The Swordsman will actually have one fan cheering for Barr at The Pit, which is known for being hostile to visiting teams, because his mother, Lori, is the principal at St. Paul. His father is former Notre Dame running back Tony Brooks and his mother attended Notre Dame as well. Brant Botill (Corcoran): The senior running back continues to break all school records. Last week, Brant scored five touchdowns on runs of 41 ,2, 7, and 2 and on a 43-yard pass reception as the Panthers ran past Fowler, 39-12, in a non-league contest. Botill has rushed for 4,330 yards and has scored 67 touchdowns in his three-year career, according to Central Section historian Bob Barnett. James Boyd (Jordan, Los Angeles): Senior all-state candidate had another monster game for the Bulldogs with 395 yards passing in a 44-27 Eastern League victory over Huntington Park. He did his damage through the air by completing 21 of 37 passes with four touchdowns against one interception. Boyd, who was named the L.A. City Section Defensive Lineman of the Year as a junior, also collected two solo tackles. The Spartans dominated time of possession in this game, but the Bulldogs got the big plays, as Delvon Purvis caught eight passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns, including a 81-yarder. Jordan's Brandon Caldwell also made big plays, catching three passes for 155 yards, including a 88-yarder. Top-notch junior Deshawn Beck returned a kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth-quarter as the pesky Spartans forced Jordan to pull out all the stops. Jared Braun (Serra, San Mateo): According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Braun got quite a razzing from his Catholic school teammates after missing school and practice the day before a game. Braun, a practicing Jew, showed no effects of fasting or missing practice for the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur on Thursday. He came back Friday night to rush for 200 yards and two touchdowns as Serra rebounded from three straight losses with a 41-14 thumping of Sacred Heart Cathedral in a West Catholic Athletic League matchup. | | | | | Harold Abend | | | Gatorade-drenched Bishop O'Dowd coach Paul Perenon celebrated his 200th career victory last Saturday. | Mario Brown & Chris Martin (Bishop O'Dowd, Oakland): This duo of talented highly regarded junior D1 prospects delivered Coach Paul Perenon his 200th career win in a 35-6 victory over San Lorenzo. They also helped propel the Dragons into the No. 9 spot in the newest Div. II CIF State Bowl Game rankings. The 5-foot-9, 165-pound elusive Brown took the second half opening kick-off 94 yards for a touchdown to put the Dragons up 14-6, and ended up scoring four touchdowns after also running for three (12, 12, 32 yards). He finished with 145 yards rushing on 19 carries and 276 all-purpose yards. He also had an interception from his defensive back position. Martin, who in looking at him, with his 6-foot-4, 230-pound size with speed, looks ready for the next level right now, led the Dragon defense with 14 tackles, including three for loss, including a sack. Michael Bundy (El Segundo): Accounted for five touchdowns, including three passing, in Gundo's 35-13 victory over Bishop Montgomery of Torrance. Te Shon Burton (Leuzinger, Lawndale): Burton led the Olympians to their seventh consecutive Mayor's Cup by downing winless Hawthorne, 35-6. Burton completed 12 of 18 passes for 332 yards and two scores. His scoring aerials came from 87 and 40 yards out and he added a rushing touchdown in the victory over the once-proud football program that's come under hard times this decade. Jesse Callier (Warren, Downey): Led the way in Warren's 23-21 victory over Torrance as he churned his way to 228 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 21 carries. So far this season, Callier has rushed for 832 yards on 104 carries and has scored 10 touchdowns. Jordan Canada (Duarte): Led the way in a 34-16 victory over Gladstone of Covina with 266 yards rushing. Canada did his damage on 18 carries and hit pay dirt twice from 50 and 48 yards out. Andrew Carcich (Crescenta Valley, La Crescenta): This 155-pound linebacker led his team to a come-from-behind victory over Burbank by intercepting two passes. On one of the thefts, Carcich returned the pass 35 yards for a touchdown. Omari Carr (Oak Grove, San Jose): Some years there are players who are regulars in this feature and this year Omari has replaced brother Jabari in that capacity. Last week in a 42-0 whitewash of Live Oak of Morgan Hill, Carr went over the 200-yard rushing mark for the second straight week. This time it was 239 yards and five touchdowns in just 11 carries. Matt Ching (Salesian, Richmond): Pride's running back powered his way to 266 yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries in a 28-0 blanking on the road at McClymonds of Oakland. Ching served notice when he ran 78 yards on his first carry. Brandon Connette (Santiago, Corona): Had 279 all-purpose yards in 56-20 rout of Riverside Poly. He rushed for two TDs and passed for another two as Santiago rolled up 535 total yards. Skyler Dougherty (University City, San Diego): In the same game Scripps Ranch's Michigan-bound quarterback Tate Forcier was throwing for 348 yards and three touchdowns to beat University City 44-34, UC's quarterback threw five touchdown passes. His scoring tosses were 40, 25, 17, 24 and 21 yards. Andy Early (Orange Glen, Escondido): Early was a workhorse as he carried 41 times for 246 yards, but the Patriots lost to Mt. Carmel, 42-21. Early scored late twice in the fourth quarter on runs of 14 and 2 yards. Clark Evans & Paul Richardson Jr. (Los Alamitos): The University of Colorado commit Evans passed for 228 yards and 5 TDs, in addition to gaining 81 yards on the ground, and scoring the key TD in Los Alamitos' 41-28 win over previously unbeaten Narbonne of Harbor City. Richardson, the son of former UCLA WR Paul Richardson, hauled in four of Evans' catches, each for a TD, to go along with 118 yards. Evans has been a standout for three seasons, but he's really stepping up his game this season for the state-ranked Griffins, as he's completed 55 percent of his passes for 998 yards with 15 touchdowns against only three interceptions. He's also leading Los Al in rushing with 462 yards while averaging six yards per carry. Tate Forcier (Scripps Ranch, San Diego): The Michigan-bound quarterback threw for 348 yards in a 44-34 non-league win at University City. Forcier was 18-of-25 with three touchdown passes and a touchdown run of 15 yards. Fabian Florez (Tranquility): Ran for a career high 254 yards on 22 carries and also scored three touchdowns on runs of 49, 3, and 6 yards against Fresno Christian. Tranquility posted a 40-29 win. Aaron Garbutt & Louie Villa (Westminster): The running back duo combined for 304 yards rushing and four TDs to lift the Lions to a 30-23 win over Santa Ana Valley. Garbutt numbers were 11-149-3 and Villa, 10-155-1. James Grace (Inglewood): Grace had an amazing game as the Sentinels held on to beat Palos Verdes, 31-30. He scored Inglewood's first touchdown on a 55-yard interception return and also scored on a 65-yard kickoff return. P.V. tried to keep the ball way from Shaq Evans on kickoff returns but the strategy backfired as Inglewood had a second short kickoff return for a touchdown of 55 yards. David Graves & Tyler Trosin (Folsom): The Bulldogs are 5-0 and the 6-foot-1, 195-pound senior signal caller Graves is one of the biggest reasons. Last week in a 55-6 shellacking of Oakmont of Roseville, he threw four touchdown passes and ran for another to give him 16 passing and six rushing TDs on the season. Sophomore Trosin qualifies this week, too. After recording 11 tackles and scoring once on defense last week in a win over Franklin (Elk Grove), he bettered the effort against Oakmont, scoring three touchdowns, once each rushing and receiving, plus a 101-yard interception return. Zack Graves (Whitney, Rocklin): Some folks might not know where the Whitney suburb of Rocklin is located but not the boys on the Colfax football team or any other Wildcat opponents in the Pioneer Valley League. Especially not after the 5-foot-9 165-pound halfback ran for 244 yards and four touchdowns on 27 carries in Whitney's 34-27 victory over the Falcons. With Graves literally carrying the load, Whitney is now 5-0 to start the season. The Sac-Joaquin Section's reported leading rusher and point scorer now has 971 yards on the ground with 16 touchdowns and 120 total points. Demaree Hampton (Mission, San Francisco): The Bears on Wall Street may be hibernating, and the ones in the wild are getting ready for a long sleep, but this running/kicking Bear from the City is doing anything but sleeping. In a 51-22 victory over cross-town Balboa, Hampton rushed for 206 yards on 15 carries while scoring on runs of 43, 29 and 51 yards. He also scored on a 54-yard fumble recovery and booted a 38-yard field goal. Keaton Hernandez & Brian Marshall (Desert Chapel, Palm Springs): The duo helped the Eagles soar to perfect 5-0 record as Hernandez tossed six touchdown passes en route to 231 yards during a 42-6 victory over Cal Lutheran. Marshall gobbled in four of them in the easy win. Aaron Horne (Castlemont, Oakland): The receiver/defensive back is making new Oakland Section Commissioner Michael Moore proud after making the Stat Stars for the second week in a row. Against upstart Tamalpais of Mill Valley, Horne rushed for 102 yards, caught a 37-yard touchdown pass, and intercepted a pass and maneuvered 63 yards for a score. Donny Huckins (Greenville): We missed the reported rushing leader from the Northern Section the past two games before last week's 144 yard, three touchdown effort against Happy Camp in a 51-12 victory. In the two games prior to that, the senior running back from the northernmost reaches of the state on Highway 89 near Lake Almanor had gigantic numbers. In a 30-20 victory over Big Valley of Bieber, he ran for 285 yards and two touchdowns. Two weeks ago he went for 360 yards on 25 carries and scored twice in a 30-28 loss to Westwood. On the season, Huckins has 1,326 yards and 12 touchdowns. Jemeryn Jenkins (Silverado, Victorville): Just a junior, Jenkins rushed for 226 yards, including scoring on an 86-yard run, and passed for another 122 yards, adding another TD. His running and passing wasn't enough, however, as Silverado suffered a 28-20 setback to Chino Hills. Jamie Jensen, Sean Hale & Dante Fullard (Gilroy): The Cowboys couldn't get a lasso on either of the three in a 45-2 thrashing of visiting Salinas. Quarterback Jensen completed 16 of 27 passes for 354 yards and three touchdowns. Hale caught four of the passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns, while Fullard had eight catches for 195 yards. Fullard also ran for the first touchdown of the game. A.J. Johnson (Chino Hills): Gained 226 yards on 25 carries in 28-20 win over Silverado of Victorville. Fred Jones (Stallworth Academy, Stockton): He's also known as Snoop and the scoop on Snoop this week is that he had 13 carries for 244 yards for his team in a 29-12 victory over Monterey. Jones scored once on an 80-yard run and also scored on an 85-yard kickoff return. Collin Keoshian (Santa Clarita Christian, Canyon Country): Playing on a small-enrollment team usually requires a 48-minute performance and that's exactly what Keoshian turned in. He rushed for 190 yards on 30 carries, tossed a TD pass and was credited with 11 tackles in a 33-20 win over Rolling Hills Prep of San Pedro. Devin Lovering (Golden West, Visalia): Carried the ball 25 times for 252 yards and scored three touchdowns (46, 4, 23) in a 49-41 West Yosemite League victory over Mt. Whitney. Junior QB Tanner Mendonca of Mt. Whitney passed for five touchdowns, good for 314 yards on 25-of-46 passing, and wide receiver Titus Grayson caught 10 receptions in a losing effort. Raul Lozano (Yuba City): The Honkers have reason to make some noise after a two-game road winning streak gets them to 2-3 on the season. The player who did the loudest honking last week is this sophomore running back who went for 245 yards on only 11 carries. He ran for three touchdowns, including a 98-yarder. Mathew MacAnas (Cesar Chavez, Delano): Led his team past Tulare Western, 50-35, by rushing for 224 yards on 18 carries and scoring three touchdowns. Eric Martin (Rancho Verde, Moreno Valley): One of the most gifted linebackers in the state, Martin collected two interceptions and a pair of sacks in a 21-0 win over cross-town Moreno Valley. Adam McCurley (Washington, Easton): Set one school record as he passed for 416 yards, tied another by passing for five touchdowns, and ran for another score of 17 yards as Washington beat Yosemite of Oakhurst, 41-33, in a North Sequoia League game. Teammate Josh Williams helped out as he had five receptions for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Yosemite's Jesse Lownsbury also had a big night in a losing effort by passing for 300 yards for two touchdowns and wide receiver Detri Dunn had 10 receptions and one score. Jared Moore & Dane Poole (Esperanza, Anaheim): Moore hit pay dirt four times from 34, 4, 3 and 2 yards out to key the Aztecs' offense and Poole took care of the defense, recovering two fumbles and pulling in an interception as Esperanza beat Centennial of Compton, 49-6. Brett Nottingham (Monte Vista, Danville): It's hard to believe this junior is only in the fifth game of his starting career after the way he's played in leading the Mustangs to a 5-0 start. Last week's ESPNRISE CalHiSports.com California State Boys Athlete of the Week continued his torrid pace, passing for over 300 yards for the third time this season in a 56-14 blowout of Granada of Livermore. This week it was 307 yards and six touchdowns, three of which went to senior wide receiver Matt Tuckness. Nottingham now has 1,501 passing with 19 touchdowns and only one interception. His QB rating is an even 150. Lance Orender (Buchanan, Clovis): Led the way in a come-from-behind 35-21 victory vs. San Joaquin Memorial of Fresno. Orender helped the Bears forget about their first loss of the season to Fresno Edison by completing 22 of 35 passes for 317 yards and three TDs. Treyvon Payne (Artesia, Lakewood): Got it done on both sides of the ball in the Pioneers' 61-13 victory over Cerritos by scoring on two touchdown receptions from QB Danny Ragland and on a 80-yard interception return. Gavino Pinal (El Cajon Valley, El Cajon): Pinal intercepted three passes, but it wasn't enough for the Braves to get a win as they fell to Otay Ranch, 42-19. Pinal also scored a touchdown on a 39-yard pass reception. Jerry Rice Jr. (Menlo, Atherton): Looking more and more like a chip off the old block, albeit without quite the size and 40-yard dash speed that gets college recruiters mouth's watering, this versatile 5-foot-11, 182-pounder with great football speed and lateral movement, showed he can do just about anything Coach Mark Newton asks him to do on the gridiron. With starting quarterback Danny Diekroeger sidelined with a shoulder injury, Rice Jr. took the job as the starting QB against a very solid Terra Nova of Pacifica. He proceeded to run for two touchdowns and 178 yards, complete all nine of his pass attempts for 108 yards, and he found time to catch a 30-yard touchdown pass from Paul Schemel. Rice Jr.'s 31-yard run on a 3rd-and-8 for a TD to begin the fourth quarter, where he was running in one direction, juked out five guys, cut back and then ran past four more to pay dirt was the game-winner. Leonard Rhodes (Walnut): Set a school record by scoring five touchdowns during a 47-13 whitewashing of La Habra Sonora. He scored on runs of 3, 24, 1, 59, and 11 yards and was congratulated when he came off the field by former school record holder Ryan O' Shields. O'Shields is an assistant coach to his father and head coach, Mike O' Shields, and Rhodes dedicated his performance to his recently passed grandmother, Frieda Urso. George Roberson (San Leandro): This small quick back had a huge game as San Leandro won its second straight in a 52-14 victory on the road at Arroyo of San Lorenzo. He rushed for 224 yards and three touchdowns on just 12 carries as San Leandro amassed 303 yards on the ground and 440 total yards. Roberson had three highlight-reel touchdown runs of 79, 75 and 12 yards. Eric Rogers (Redlands): Caught 8 passes for 109 yards and two TDs in 40-13 win over Eisenhower of Rialto. Teammate Josh Logan passed for 263 yards while Cam Phillips rushed for 181 and caught two passes for 85 yards, one a 73-yard TD in the easy win over Ike. Jonathan Rojas (Wilson, Los Angeles): Another season and yet another signal-caller for the Mules that racks up big passing numbers. It has been this way since the days of Ron Cuccia and Steve Clarkson in the 1970's. Last week, Rojas completed 18 of 26 passes for 223 yards and a whopping six touchdowns in the Mules' 52-32 win over Contreras of Los Angeles. Big play WR and Div. I recruit Anthony Denham hauled in six of those passes with three going for scores. Denham finished with 103 yards while Rojas has thrown for 1,057 yards and 14 scores through five games. A.J. Romine & Jake Wrobel (Rio Linda): Romine had three interceptions and ran for a touchdown, and Wrobel blocked two punts, forced a fumble and recorded a sack in Rio Linda's 41-14 win over Natomas of Sacramento. Robbie Rouse (Madison, San Diego): San Diego's Little Big Man running back carried 11 times for 214 yards with three touchdowns to lead the Warhawks (5-0) to a 39-7 non-league win over Santana of Santee. The 5-6, 170-pounder scored on runs of 80, 26 and 30 yards. A year ago, Rouse rushed for 355 yards in a 7-point win over Santana. Jose Rueles (Firebaugh, Lynwood): Congrats to Firebaugh and coach Jason Miller as the Falcons won their first game in school history in the school's first-ever home game. Kudos goes to Rueles as well, as he's the school's first-ever CalHiSports.com's stat star with 215 yards rushing and a touchdown during a 58-20 victory over Manual Arts of Los Angeles. It's interesting that Firebaugh's first victory came at the expense of the once-proud Toilers, since that school played in first varsity game in 1910 and once ruled the roost in the L.A. City Section under the legendary Jim Blewett. Even as recent as eight years, ago, the Toilers had an all-state level player in WR James Finley but they've fallen on hard times in recent years. Antwon Sabal & Tre Meadors (San Gorgonio, San Bernardino): Sabal returned an interception 21 yards for six and swept up a fumble before racing 28 yards for another score in the 40-27 win over Apple Valley. Meadors was a little more conventional, gaining 205 yards on just nine carries, two of which went for TDs. Angel Santiago (Etiwanda, Rancho Cucamonga): The Eagles played Charter Oak of Covina tough, but three muffed extra-point tries did them in as they lost a 35-32 heart-breaker. Santiago did have one costly interception, but he ran for two touchdowns, completed 16 of 24 passes for 255 yards and added two touchdown passes in a losing effort. Sean Schroeder (Dana Hills, Dana Point): Duke will be getting a good one as Schroeder completed 14 of 20 passes for 387 yards and five TDs. His favorite target was Dylan Denso, who hauled in five receptions for 178 yards and three scores, as Dana Hills downed El Modena of Orange, 34-14. Cole Stanford, Cameron Ryan & Broughan Jantz (Nevada Union, Grass Valley): The Miners have been using more than picks and shovels on opponents after scoring over 50 points for the third week in a row in a 77-7 blowout of visiting Franklin of Stockton. Lots of players got some gold in the win but these three Miners came away with the most nuggets. Stanford returned three first half punts for touchdowns, Ryan caught two TD passes and ran for another on a 43-yard scamper, and Jantz three for two scores. It certainly looks like the 5-0 squad is back after outscoring opponents 184-19 the last three games. Eric Stern (California, Whittier): Set a school record by nailing a 57-yard field goal as the Condors downed El Monte, 33-14. It was his sixth field goal so far this season. Charles Thompson (Christian, El Cajon): Thompson added to his total as the San Diego Section's leading rusher as he carried 10 times for 206 yards and scored two touchdowns in a 48-14 win over Palo Verde. Josh Tucker (Christian Brothers, Sacramento): This Falcon flew the highest in a 38-21 victory over Ponderosa of Shingle Springs. The 5-10, 195-pound senior running back went for 251 yards and two touchdowns. Earlier this year in a win against San Joaquin Memorial of Fresno, he rushed for 328 yards. John Uribe & Roberto Nelson (Santa Barbara): One week after setting a county passing record with 581 yards passing, Uribe was 26-of-43 for 378 yards with four touchdowns in a narrow 38-37 loss to Pacifica of Oxnard. Nelson, who just might be the best grid-hoop wide receiver in the state along with Twentynine Palms' Montreal Harris, caught nine of Uribe's passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns in a losing effort. In last week's 51-21 victory over San Luis Obispo, Nelson gained 227 yards receiving on only six catches, including a 77-yard TD. He's gained 401 yards receiving the last two weeks while Uribe has passed for an incredible 959 yards. Greg Watson (Rancho Cucamonga): The junior had an almost perfect night, completing 15 of 19 passes for 280 yards and 2 TDs. Not good enough? OK, he ran for two more in a 56-30 romp over Temecula Valley of Temecula. John White (South Torrance): In a 27-7 non-league victory over Peninsula of Rolling Hills Estates, White went for 249 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 21 carries for the Spartans, which improved to 2-3 with the win. Randy Wright (Cardinal Newman, Santa Rosa): The Redwood Empire's newest star quarterback and Coach Paul Cronin's latest protégée put on a show as Newman made quick work of the cross-town visitors from Piner in a 49-0 blanking. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound senior quarterback, who is getting more and more D1 interest, passed for four touchdowns and ran for another. He also kicked three extra points, passed for a two-point conversion and ran for another two-pointer. He punts also, but rarely with Newman 5-0 and the top contender for the Div. III CIF State Bowl Game north berth. Cierre Wood (Santa Clara, Oxnard): Arguably the state's top back, Wood gained 198 yards rushing, on just eight carries, with three of them going for TDs in an easy 50-8 victory over Kilpatrick of Malibu. Wood added a 12-yard touchdown reception to go with returning the opening kickoff 94 yards for a score. Robert Woods (Serra, Gardena): The Cavaliers met up with Taft of Woodland Hills in an intersectional showdown of unbeaten clubs and Woods was a big factor in Serra's 49-13 pasting of the Toreadors. Taft trailed 14-7 at halftime, but Serra broke the game open in the third period with three unanswered touchdowns. Woods, who was recently featured in ESPNRISE.com's On the Rise video series, was a one-man wrecking crew with a 15-yard touchdown pass, a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown and two interceptions, including one he returned for a 45-yard touchdown. He also recovered a fumble for good measure. Serra's defense and did a good job of slowing down Taft's D.J. Morgan, who like Woods is one of the top juniors in the state, as he gained only 32 yards on 16 carries. De La Salle does it again September 21, 2008 1:45 AM By Ronnie Flores, Senior Editor Glendale, Calif. -- One week after using a broken extra-point play to pull out a hard-fought victory over Serra of San Mateo, the De La Salle of Concord football team once again used a big special teams play to turn its fortunes around at Moyse Stadium on the campus of Glendale High School. Trailing Loyola of Los Angeles, 21-19, with four and a half minutes remaining in Saturday night's game, the Cubs' Mauricio Alfonso attempted a 33-yard field goal. His kick was partially blocked and Noah Perio caught the fluttering punt near his own goal line. He raced raced up the De La Salle sideline, then zig zagged across field until he was finally tripped up by Alfonso at the Cubs' 25-yard line. | | | | | Scott Kurtz | | | Noah Perio made a key fourth quarter special teams play in De La Salle's victory over Loyola. |
After a loss of two, De La Salle quarterback Blake Wayne (5 of 11, 66 yards, 1 TD, 13 carries, 93 yards, 3 TDs) dashed 26 yards down to the one-yard line aided by great blocking down field. He then scored the game-winning touchdown on a quarterback keeper and scored on a two-point conversion attempt as CalHiSports.com's No.1 ranked team held on for a 27-21 victory. "We came out with a slow tempo, but it was just a matter of time," Blake remarked. "I was pretty confident we would turn things around after the first two possessions. It was just a matter of everyone doing their job." Wayne led the comeback after Loyola (2-1) took a 14-0 lead behind the tough running of junior running back Anthony Barr. De La Salle (2-0) had trouble corralling the 6-foot-4, 220-pound junior, as he rumbled for scored of 35 and six yards on Loyola's first two possessions. De La Salle trailed 14-13 at halftime after Wayne scored on a 4th and goal bootleg from the two-yard line with 1:07 remaining in the first half. "He called that bootleg himself," explained De La Sale head coach Bob Ladouceur. "He (Wayne) is a real competitor. He would do everything if he could." Saturday night Wayne did just about everything, as he kept the Spartans within striking distance by scoring on a serpentine 15-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter. Blake's scoring gallop was aided by a key block by running back Kylan Butler (27 carries, 146 yards) that made the score 21-19 in favor of Loyola. The Cubs had took a 21-13 lead on an eight-play, 73-yard scoring drive to start the second half. It was capped off by a two-yard touchdown run by Barr. The smallish De La Salle defensive line had trouble stopping Barr, who finished with 210 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 32 carries, but the Spartans found a way to win for the second consecutive week. Loyola plays 3-0 St. John Bosco of Bellflower next week while the Spartans are at home against FAB 50 ranked Don Bosco Prep of New Jersey.
