Adam McCurley: State Boys Athlete of the Week
October 9, 2009 12:05 AM
We go to the heart of the Central Section for this week's boys winner. There, we find a humble young man and tremendous all-around athlete from an athletic family that's been performing around the Fresno area for quite some time.
By Harold Abend, Special to CalHiSports.com
When the committee made a decision to award a boy from the Central Section this week, a choice had to be made between Washington Union of Fresno's Adam McCurley and several others, including Nike Elite 11 Camp participant and Tennessee-committed Tyler Bray of Kingsburg, whose team took a 28-21 decision from the Panthers in a September 18 game where the two quarterbacks both looked good.
"Actually, we're good friends so I'd congratulate him for his accomplishments,” said McCurley in a humble tone about his Kingsburg rival as though Bray had won the award.
But wait a minute. Bray didn't win this one, McCurley did, and it isn't a knock on Bray, but a chance for ESPN RISE CalHiSports.com to highlight a quality two-sport standout as the Boys State Athlete of the Week. Besides, after last summer, everyone knows about Bray anyway.
Not only is McCurley a feared double-threat quarterback, he's an excellent student that's involved in student-body work, and in his church as well.

Football Team-By-Team Previews (Part 5)
August 7, 2009 8:02 PM
Can Centennial of Corona get to the CIF state bowl game for a third straight season? Many players will be new, but head coach Matt Logan is still there and will have the Huskies ready. In addition to Centennial, also featured in this installment of this series are Mission Hills of San Marcos, Ponderosa of Shingle Springs and Washington of Easton.
Note: A coach or representative of the school should email or fax in a questionnaire in order for that school's team to be included in this feature. You can CLICK HERE to print out a questionnaire or make a photo copy of the one printed in the back of the seventh edition of the ESPN RISE CalHiSports.com Record Book and Almanac we sent to schools last March. If you can't print a questionnaire, review the categories below and simply fill in the blanks. We will add our own comments and analysis. Please fax completed questionnaire to (209) 463-1219 or email info to mark@studentsports.com.
Team Name: Centennial (Corona)
Head Coach: Matt Logan (123-31 record)
Last Year's Records: 15-0, 10-0 for J.V.
Returning Starters: 8 (4 offense, 4 defense)
Players Most Deserving of Preseason Honors: LB Brandon Brown, K Trevor Romaine, DL J.T. Felix, DB Anthony Goodman
Newcomers Who Could Make An Impact: WR/RB Barrington Collins, DB Dion Bass, DB Chris Gonzalez, WR Chris Simpson, RB Denzel Harkin, QB Mike Eubank, DE Leo Adams, WR Larry Scott
Coach's General Outlook: We have some talented new players that will have to fill in at some of the more important skill positions, including quarterback, that may have us struggle early in the season. We expect our defense, especially along the line and in the secondary, to be strong.
Other Teams To Watch From The Area (listed by the coach): Norco, J.W. North (Riverside), Redlands East Valley
All-league level players with GPAs above 3.50: J.T. Felix, Jacob Olsson, Sam Kador
CalHiSports.com Comments: Anyone who has seen the beastly 6-5, 235-pound Eubank throwing the ball and doing quarterback drills knows that the Huskies are still going to be prolific on offense even though so many weapons off of last year's No. 1 team in the state are gone. It's also important to note that Brown was injured last year and didn't play when Centennial topped De La Salle in the CIF Division I state bowl game. Another good sign for Logan is that he should have plenty of promising up-and-coming talent from that unbeaten JV team plus there were other players, like Felix and Goodman, who already have shown what they do on defense. In our system, it's going to take the Huskies getting beat on the field in order for them to be ranked lower than any other team in the Inland Empire, but this could be the year that a Norco or REV is able to get it done.

All-State Baseball Nominations (Part II)
June 27, 2009 2:19 PM
It's down to a matter of days before the 2009 All-State Baseball Teams are released. Our list of nominees has been updated since the first time it was posted, but it's not too late to make sure we know about a certain someone in your midst.
The all-state teams honors program at CalHiSports.com and Cal-Hi Sports has been ongoing for 30 years and are selected currently for the sports of football, boys basketball, girls basketball, baseball and softball.
Nominations are always welcome, but don't wait until it's too late and the teams are released. They won't be changed at that point, unless it's a simple error.
Please send any nomination with each athlete's height, weight, position, year in school, significant statistics. Comparing a player not on the board yet to one who already is can be very important toward eventual selection. Limit each nomination to one page please. Send to:
mark@studentsports.com or FAX (209) 463-1219 or call (209) 608-1317.
Be aware that not all sophomores or juniors we are considering for all-state underclass may be on this list. We also usually end up selecting players who aren't on this list for medium school or small school squads. These players will emerge when all of the various major newspaper-based honor squads are released.
The format for all-state baseball will be to continue with a 30-player overall all-state first team with 30 more on second team. Instead of utility, we may designate as many as eight players as multi-purpose. This accounts for the many who are both top hitters and top pitchers. Each first team player is written up and then becomes eligible for selection to the EA SPORTS All-American Team.
There also will be 30 players for medium schools (Div. III traditional state rankings division), 30 for small schools (Div. IV and Division V traditional state rankings divisions) and 30 more for all-state underclass (non-seniors).
