BASEBALL

Javier Carvajal (Freedom, Oakley): His mate Billy Wardell (whom you'll hear about later this week) did it on the mound and this No. 8 batter had the hot stick in the batter's box, as the Falcons won their 12th straight game with a 3-0 victory over De La Salle (Concord) in the NCS Div. I championship game at the Oakland Coliseum. The senior outfielder was 3-for-3 with a double, triple, RBI and run scored. His two-out double in the second inning knocked in the first and only run needed in the win. The NCS title was the first in any sport for the Oakley school's boys.

Tyler Gaffney (Cathedral Catholic, San Diego): The future Stanford Cardinal (if he's not taken high in next week's MLB Draft) sent two balls over the fence, one with the bases loaded, as the Dons muscled their way past University City, 14-4, in second round action of the CIFSDS Div. The shortstop had an amazing day at Dodger Stadium in the L.A. City Section Div. II finals. He blasted two three-run homers and led the game off with a double as Westchester took the title, 11-1, over upstart Monroe of North Hills.

Andrew Kjar (Miramonte, Orinda): This 6-1, 185-pound right-hander came up with a huge performance just at the right time in the NCS Div.
