Since soccer is a sport played throughout the school year in different sections around the state, we wait until the summer to release our various statewide honors. A familiar football powerhouse ends No. 1 among the boys while for girls it's a happy bunch of Troubadours from St. Francis of Sacramento.
Note: Players have to have participated on their high school teams to be eligible for all-state recognition. The CalHiSports.com statewide honors for boys and girls soccer also would not be possible without the research and assistance of ESPN RISE National Soccer Editor Sheldon Shealer of Myersville, Md. Go to ESPNRISE.com and click on the soccer page to check out Sheldon's work. For all of our previous boys and girls soccer state honors, check out the seventh edition of the CalHiSports.com State Record Book and Almanac.
Boys State Team of the Year: De La Salle (Concord) 23-1-1
The Spartans ended their season with a North Coast Section Class 3A championship and then watched as La Costa Canyon of Carlsbad and El Toro, who were both ranked ahead of them, lose in postseason play giving the Spartans the top spot in the state to end the year. Garrett Biel headed in the section finals' lone goal during the second overtime for a 1-0 win over San Ramon Valley. On the year, the Spartans defeated five teams ranked in the ESPN RISE FAB 50 and ended the season with an 18-match unbeaten streak. Goalkeeper Chris Holm allowed just 12 goals on the year for a 0.54 goals against average and was named first-team All-EBAL. Loyola Marymount-bound senior Chris Bernardi led the offensive attack with 12 goals as one of four Spartans to earn first-team All-EBAL honors. De La Salle previously was state team of the year in boys soccer for the 1990-91 school year. That also was the last time an NCS team was accorded the top statewide honor.
Girls State Team of the Year: St. Francis (Sacramento) 20-0-3
The Troubadours had little trouble in capturing their sixth section championship in the last seven years with a 3-1 victory over St. Mary's of Stockton in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I finals. Junior Hannah Keane scored two goals in their championship win over the Rams to cement their status as the top team from California and earned them a No. 4 ranking in the end of the season ESPN RISE FAB 50 national rankings. The Troubadours' lineup had several Division I college players as Molly Klier is headed to Portland, Delta River League Player of the Year Hannah Davidson is headed to Indiana, and top junior Alex Brown, who has yet to decide where she'll go for college. Head coach Richard Carrigan was named the Delta River League Coach of the Year. St. Francis is the first Sac-Joaquin Section team to be No. 1 in the state overall since Davis was accorded the top spot for the 1998-99 school year.
Boys State Player of the Year: Paul Islas (Bullard, Fresno)
The two-time Fresno Bee Player of the Year helped Bullard reach the CIF Southern Regional final. He scored 20 goals as a senior and ended his career with 92 goals. Islas is a U.S. under-18 national team member. He has signed with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He is the first player ever from a CIF Central Section school to be named State Player of the Year in boys soccer.
Girls State Player of the Year: Kelsey Wilson (San Clemente)
Wilson, a Loyola Marymount signee, was named the Orange County Register Player of the Year and CIF Southern Section Division I Offensive Player of the Year after helping San Clemente to titles at the Excalibur Tournament, the CIF Southern Section Division I and CIF Southern Regional Division I tournaments. Wilson had 12 goals and a team-best 11 assists. She is the third player from Orange County in the last five years to be accorded the state's top girls soccer individual honor. The other two have been Alexa Orand from El Modena of Orange in 2006 and Amy Rodriguez from Santa Margarita of Rancho SM in 2005.
Boys State Coach of the Year: Ken Sjobo (El Toro, Lake Forest)
Sjobom guided El Toro to a CIF Southern Section Division I crown and to a CIF Southern Regional semifinal appearance. The team went 26-2-3. He has been a successful boys soccer coach in Orange County for many years. Sjobom is the first state boys soccer coach of the year from Orange County since 2001 when the honor went to Martin Stringer from Mater Dei.
Girls State Coach of the Year: Phillip De Rosa (Burlingame)
His team in the winter won a Central Coast Section championship. De Rosa's team also have won back-to-back CCS titles and sports a 44-1-5 record over the past two seasons. He has been at Burlingame for 11 years and also was the San Mateo County Coach of the Year. This year's team only had four seniors so De Rosa did it with younger players. The last state girls soccer coach of the year from the CCS was Dawn Hill from St. Francis of Mountain View, who earned the honor in 2003.
