NOTE: We've been compiling weekly stat stars in various sports for 30 years. The reason we have published them virtually every week of the school year since 1979 is to highlight many of the top performers around the state and to keep our exclusive state record book up to date. We've just printed our seventh edition and if you love the content on our site, you'll love the book, so order your copy today.

BASEBALL

Mark Appel (Monte Vista, Danville): We missed the Stanford-bound star two weeks ago but he had an exceptional outing against Tokay of Lodi in a 3-2 loss at Banner Island Park in Stockton. Appel and the other pitchers have been doing fine, but the Mustangs' hitting the last two weeks has been anemic. In the Tokay game, Appel pitched six innings with 11 strikeouts, no walks and one unearned run. He left the game with a 2-1 lead after scattering six hits and ended up taking a no decision after Tokay tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Mark has a 1.40 ERA for the season.

Matt Brezinski (Sacred Heart Prep, Atherton): Pitched a three-hitter and had an RBI double to lead the Gators to their 10th straight win, a 3-0 victory over Mills of Millbrae.

Cody Buckel (Royal, Simi Valley): Buckel went all the way and fanned 13 in a 4-0 win over Agoura of Agoura Hills.

Lazaro Campos (Kennedy, Granada Hills):
In an 18-0 win over Reseda, Campos hit an inside the park homer, added a double, a triple and drove in three.

Jose Cardona (El Camino Real, Woodland Hills): Cardona struck out 12 and gave up only one hit in a 6-0 shutout over Granada Hills.

Albert Carrillo (Santa Paula): Not only did he go 2-for-4 at the plate, but on the rubber he fanned 11 in a 6-0 win over Santa Clara of Oxnard.

Christian Carter (Westview, San Diego): His two-run homer was part of five RBI on a 3-for-4 day as the Wolverines spanked San Marcos, 12-2, in SD Valley League play.

John Combest (Huntington Beach):
Although Northwood (Irvine) scored seven runs as a team, Combest drove in seven all by himself, slamming two home runs, as the Oilers rolled, 14-7.

Saul Cuevas (Lindhurst, Olivehurst): Led the offense for the Blazers in their 15-5 road win at Golden Sierra of Garden Valley with a pair of homers and seven RBI.

Devin De La Garza (McFarland): Led his team past Laton, 6-0, in a East Sierra League game as he pitched a seven-inning no-hitter with 15 strikeouts.

Mitch Delfino (Cloverdale): This senior shortstop and right-handed pitcher has been on fire at the plate the past two weeks and likewise is pitching well. Last week in an 18-2 blowout of Lower Lake, he was 4-for-4 with two doubles, four RBI and two runs scored. Two weeks ago, he improved to 4-1 on the season when he struck out 15 and hit his fourth home run of this year in a 7-2 win against St. Helena. In four games the past two weeks, Delfino is 11-for-13 with a homer, six doubles, one triple, nine RBI and seven runs scored. Those numbers have propelled him top the top of the NCS in hitting with a .633 mark so far this season.

Ricky Diaz (Tracy):
Was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with his last hit coming in grand fashion. Diaz ended the game with a grand-slam homer in the bottom of the fifth inning in the Bulldogs' 13-1 win over Chavez of Stockton.

Jake Etcheverry (Hughson):
It's not quite a record in our newly updated state record book but it's impressive nonetheless as he went 4-for-5 with a grand slam homer and nine RBI as the Huskies scored 16 runs in the second inning of a 30-0 win over Riverbank.

Eric Ehlow (Dana Hills, Dana Point): Pitched a no-hitter just one day after breaking his nose in practice, as the Dolphins beat Aliso Niguel of Aliso Viejo, 5-1.

Daniel Ford (Grossmont, La Mesa): Provided all the offense the Foothillers needed with a grand slam home run in a 20-0 rout of El Cajon Valley.

Chris Gallegos (Evergreen Valley, San Jose): Proving his team needs him hitting to win, in the past week this senior outfielder hit his sixth and seventh home runs of the season in two Cougars victories where he knocked in a combined six runs sandwiched around two losses where he was 0-for-7 at the plate.

Connor Gerhart (La Jolla Country Day, La Jolla): Although the Torreys lost to public school rival La Jolla, 13-9, in a non-league game, Gerhart was the star at the plate as he crushed two home runs and collected three RBI.

Brett Gerritse (Pacifica, Garden Grove): Gerritse fired a four-hitter and struck out nine as the Mariners beat Kennedy of La Palma, 3-0, in Empire League play.

Brad Hartong (Los Alamitos): Was a one-man wrecking crew as Hartong went 3-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and five RBI in an 11-1 rout of Fountain Valley.

K.C. Hobson (Stockdale, Bakersfield): Had an afternoon to remember, in which he had four hits, three that went for home runs, and batted in eight runs in a 14-1 win vs. Frontier. Hobson also pitched a one-hitter. For more details, see the ESPN RISE National Athlete of the Week feature as well as the CalHiSports.com State Boys Athlete of the Week feature. Harold Abend's story on Hobson will be posted later this week.

Eric Jaffe (Bishop O'Dowd, Oakland): One of the big reasons the Dragons are 17-3 and ranked No. 6 in the state in Division III is because of this big 6-3, 215-pound junior slugging first-baseman and pitcher. Last week, he hit his fourth and fifth home runs in respective 10-0 and 10-5 wins over San Leandro and Mt. Eden of Hayward. In the two games combined, he added a double and was 4-for-5 with five RBI and four runs scored. On the season he's hitting .483 with 19 RBI.

Andrew Kjar (Miramonte, Orinda): Against arch-rival and neighboring Campolindo of Moraga, this 6-1, 190-pound senior silenced the Cougars' crowd and bats with an 85-pitch no-hitter with 15 strikeouts and a walk in a 1-0 Matadors' victory. The San Francisco Chronicle's Metro Area Boys Athlete of the Week is now 6-2 this season with losses to Alhambra Martinez and state-ranked Serra of San Mateo.

Dominique Lemus (San Pasqual, Escondido): Lemus provided enough offensive support all by himself as his five RBI on a 3-for-4 day helped lift the Eagles past Mission Hills (San Marcos), 7-4.

Tyler Matzek (Capistrano Valley, Mission Viejo):
The weekly Matzek fix included a four-hitter with nine strikeouts in six innings plus blasting his fifth home run of the season in a 6-0 victory over Tesoro of Las Flores.

Steven Mancilla & Jake Fascitelli (Sonora, La Habra): Hit back-to-back home runs, two of four launched by the Raiders, in an 8-2 Freeway League victory over Fullerton, pulling Sonora into a tie for the league lead.

Ian McCarthy (Mater Dei, Santa Ana): Scattered two hits and struck out nine to lead the Monarchs past Santa Margarita (RSM), 6-1, in Trinity League play.

Charles Moorman (El Capitan, Lakeside): This freshman powered out a grand slam home run as the Vaqueros scored 22 runs in the first three innings to rout El Cajon Valley, 22-3, in a Grossmont North League game shortened to 4 1/2 innings.

Matt Oden (San Jacinto): In a 5-3 win over Riverside Notre Dame, Oden struck out eight in the process. The icing on the cake was that this victory was No. 20 in his career against only one loss.

Mitch Patito (Patriot, Riverside): The hurler had quite a day when he struck out 18 in a 6-0 win over Bloomington.

Nathan Plein (St. Augustine, San Diego):
Came within a single of batting for the cycle as he homered, tripled and doubled while driving in three and scoring three times in a 14-2 rout of Morse of San Diego.

Cody Poteet (Christian, El Cajon): Freshman fired a no-hitter, striking at 11 while going 2-for-4 with three RBI in a 13-0 win over Serra (San Diego) in SD Eastern League action.

Adrian Quintanilla (Orange Cove): Tied a Central Section record, according to section historian Bob Barnett, by hitting four doubles against McFarland in a East Sierra League game. Quintanilla also finished 4-for-5 at the plate and drove in four runs. It still wasn't enough as McFarland collected 20 hits of its own and posted a 19-8 triumph.

Dante Redhead (Deer Valley, Antioch): Hit his seventh home run of the season and had five RBI in a 10-0 victory against Liberty of Brentwood.

Mack Santora (St. Margaret's, San Juan Capistrano): Went 4-for-5 with six RBI to lead the Titans to a 12-7 win over Oxford Academy.

Nathan Saquilon (Horizon, San Diego):
Improved his record to 9-0 on the season as he held Bishop's (La Jolla) to just three hits in an 8-1 Coastal South League victory. His nine wins lead the San Diego Section by one over Pt. Loma soph Kellen Urbon (8-0).

Donald Sneed (Edison, Huntington Beach): It really wasn't much of a hit, a lazy pop fly to left-center on an 0-2 count, but the ball dropped untouched and with two out, pinch-runner Jon Torres scored from second base to give the Chargers a 2-1, 10-inning win over Marina and undisputed first place in the Sunset League.

Gavin Stoecker (Orange): Improved his season record to 7-0 by hurling his sixth complete game of the season in a 12-3 win over Ocean View of Huntington Beach.

Adam Tarbell & Robert Cavazos (La Habra): Getting Tarbell's bat back after a torn ligament in his finger became evident when he drove in seven runs while belting two homers in a 13-7 win over Sunny Hills (Fullerton). Cavazos had a pretty good game the other time the two teams met last week as he went 4-for-4 with five RBI as the Highlanders erupted for 20 runs on 20 hits in a 20-4 victory.

Abraham Torres (Montgomery, San Diego): Mowed down 11 Olympian (Chula Vista) batters on strikes and allowed just three hits as the Aztecs rolled, 9-0.

Joey Torres & Cameron Cox (Loara, Anaheim): Cox provided the bat, crushing a three-run HR and doubling, driving in four runs, and Torres the arm, tossing a complete game to beat Cypress, 6-3.

Leio Ulu (Independence, San Jose): He may only be a freshman but last week in a 10-2 win over San Jose High, he hit his fifth home run of the season and the sacks were full.

Jesus Valdez (Hueneme, Oxnard): He had three hits at the plate, scored a run and drove in a run. On the hill, he had 12 strikeouts in a 6-0 win over Pacifica of Oxnard.

Nick Vander Tuig (Oakdale): Helped the Mustangs move to 10-0 in Valley Oak League play, as he didn't allow a hit in their 10-1 win over Manteca.

Danny Vannucci (Anaheim): His 4-for-4 day at the plate included two homers and a triple, which resulted in four RBI, as the Colonists beat Century (Santa Ana), 12-4.

Sean Wardour (West, Torrance):
The hurler went the distance and struck out 13 in a 12-0 victory over Redondo.

Grahamm Wiest & Bret Dahlson (JSerra, San Juan Capistrano): The two combined on a one-hit, 9-0 victory over St. John Bosco of Bellflower in a Trinity League game.

Andy Weissberg (Chatsworth): He's had the hot bat lately for the No. 1 ranked Chancellors. In a 15-1 win last week over Taft of Woodland Hills, the Cal State Northridge signee went 3-for-3 with a homer and five RBI. Later, when Chatsworth topped Taft again, Weissberg had two hits and two RBI. Heading into this week, over his previous five games, Andy had 10 hits, 13 RBI and four homers.

SOFTBALL

Tatiana Alcala (Pacifica, Oxnard): Had two hits, two RBIs, a stolen base, and a homerun in a 7-3 win over Hueneme.

Jalina Bluford & Emily Eguchi-Miller (Skyline, Oakland):
Sophomore leadoff hitter Bluford was 2-for-3 with two walks and two RBI, and freshman pitcher Eguchi-Miller pitched the final five innings in relief for the win as the Titans battled back from an early deficit at Owen Jones Field for a 10-7 win over Oakland Tech. The victory sends Skyline to the TransBay Series for the first time in five years, ending Tech's five-year run. Eguchi-Miller also had a bases loaded single that scored three runs. The team now opens the TransBay Series on May 15 at Laney College against the champion of the San Francisco Section.

Later in the week, Cordes went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI in a lopsided win vs. Hogan of Vallejo.

Amanda Cuccaro (Montgomery, Santa Rosa): Her teammate Taylor Stroud gets most of the ink, including some later this week, but this sophomore first basegirl and catcher has been doing her part in helping the Vikings to a perfect 21-0 mark so far this season. Last week with CalHiSports.com in attendance, she smoked a ball like a 1-iron shot up against the 200-foot fence at San Marin (Novato) for an RBI double in a 6-3 victory. The next day against Piner of Santa Rosa in an 11-1 win, she hit her fifth home run of the season. Combined in the two games, Cuccaro was 5-for-7 with five RBIs.
