BASEBALL
Jason Brady (Westmont, Campbell): Hit his sixth home run of the season last week and the final of his career in a 7-2 loss to Willow Glen (San Jose) in the CCS playoffs. Earlier in the week, Brady had two RBI, including the game-winner, in an 8-7 victory over St. Ignatius of San Francisco.
Trent Brennenman (Linfield Christian, Temecula): The hurler struck out 10 and gave up only three hits in a 3-0 win over Bermuda Dunes Desert Hot Springs in the CIFSS Division V playoffs.
Vince Bruno (Clayton Valley, Concord): Had the bat that propelled the Eagles into state top 20 this week, and into the NCS Division II title game this Saturday against Alameda at the Oakland Coliseum, with two doubles and three RBI in a 7-4 victory over Casa Grande of Petaluma.
Zac Burlando (Clairemont, San Diego): The junior third baseman drove in six runs, half of them on a three-run homer, as the Chieftains downed Crawford of San Diego, 19-2.
Joe Cantor (Foothills Christian, El Cajon): Clubbed two home runs while driving in six runs and scoring four as Foothills only took four innings to dispatch Calvary Christian of Chula Vista, 19-5.
Christian Coronado & Spencer Cooper (Hemet): The two arms combined for a no hitter in an 8-0 win over Culver City in the CIFSS Div. III playoffs.
Matt Daugherty (Temecula Valley, Temecula): In the 9-5 win over Esperanza of Anaheim in the CIFSS Div. I playoffs, Daugherty belted two homers, one of which was a grand slam.
Anthony Diaz (Helix, La Mesa): Blasted a grand slam home run en route to driving in five runs and scoring two as the Scotties stopped Monte Vista (Spring Valley), 10-4, in Grossmont South play.
David Del Grande (St. Bernard's, Eureka): Did it all in a 7-0 win over Fremont Christian in the CIFNCS postseason as he allowed just two hits and struck out 11 while going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and two RBI.
Drew Dominique (St.
Augustine, San Diego): Went a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and a home run as the Falcons edged Scripps Ranch of San Diego, 7-6, in an Eastern League game.
Ben Doucette (El Segundo): Doucette collected four hits and drove in five in a 11-1 win over Don Lugo of Chino in the first round of the CIFSS Div. IV playoffs.
Ryan Dunn (Chino Hills): Got it "dunn” with 11 strikeouts as Chino Hills delivered a big upset in the CIFSS Div. II playoffs with a 3-1 win over state-ranked Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks.
Josh Eagle (Deer Valley, Antioch): After having his story told in the Contra Costa Times, this junior right-hander went out and took care of business despite his affliction. Born with a type of club foot that has been operated on five times, and actually is quite severe because it affects his whole left leg, Eagle got the first two wins for the Wolverines in the NCS Division I playoffs. After going four innings in an 11-inning 5-4 victory over Irvington earlier in the week, the staff ace came on in the third for starter Michael Leal and went the maximum six innings. He gave up one hit and struck out four, including fanning the side in the bottom of the seventh, after his team had scored a run in the top of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.
Matthew Eschleman (Bloomington Christian): He struck out 11 in a 8-4 playoff win over North Hollywood Oakwood in the CIFSS Div. VI playoffs.
Greg Faustini & Robert Refsnyder (Laguna Hills, Laguna Beach): Faustini drove in four runs and Refsnyder hit his 10th home run of the season to lead the Hawks past Wilson of Long Beach, 6-1. Later in the week, Refsnyder two hit more homers and drove in five runs in a 13-12 loss to Lancaster in the CIF Southern Section Div. III playoffs.
Dominic Ficociello (Fullerton): Was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a home run in Fullerton's 13-2 CIFSS Div. V win over Baldwin Park.
Nick Franquez (Aragon, San Mateo): Was a perfect 6-for-6 with two doubles and four RBI in two CCS Div. II playoff games last week, the first a 9-0 victory over Mountain View and the season-ending 5-2 loss to Monterey. He finishes his senior year with a .458 average on 44 hits, 15 doubles and 37 RBI.
Damien Garcia (Animo, Inglewood): In the first playoff win ever for the school, Garcia hit a grand slam in the second inning in a 19-1 win over Big Pine. They moved on to the second round of the CIFSS Div. VII playoffs, where they fell to Milken.
Ryan Goodbrand (Tesoro, Las Flores): Remained unbeaten on the mound, improving to 8-0 as he hurled Tesoro to a 6-0 win over Long Beach Poly in the Southern Section DI playoffs.
Aaron Griffin (Grossmont, La Mesa): Had two of the six home runs hit by the Foothillers, who downed El Capitan (Lakeside), 16-4, in a Grossmont North League game.
Angelo Gumbs (Torrance): The Tartars opened up the CIFSS Div. IV playoffs with a 12-5 win over Riverside Notre Vista. Gumbs was all smiles after collecting three hits.
Allen Gwynn (Santa Paula): In a 6-0 win over Rio Hondo of Arcadia, Gwynn went 2-for-3 at the plate with a homer. On the mound, he went the distance and struck out 12. With its playoff win, Santa Paula will face Santa Monica Crossroads in the CIFSS Div. VI quarterfinals.
Mitch Haniger, James Roberts & Stephen Meade (Archbishop Mitty, San Jose): The Monarchs' softball team gets all the ink and is No. 1 in the FAB 50, but the baseball team will also be playing for a CCS section title this Saturday and part of the reason is because of this trio. Haniger didn't add to his CCS leading 12 home runs last week but in two wins combined, 11-2 over Salinas and 10-1 over Santa Teresa (San Jose), the 6-2, 185-pound senior centerfielder was on base all 10 plate appearances. He went 3-for-3 with two doubles, seven bases on balls, three RBI and five runs scored. He now has 39 hits and 24 RBI this season and an average of .382 – and it's not against stiffs. Roberts' bat is alive as well. He now has 55 hits this season after picking up seven in the three playoff games, three of which were doubles. He's hitting .474 this campaign. Meade, a steady junior, has been on base at least once in each of the three playoff games, scored at least once in each game and driven in a run in all three. He's hitting an even .500 with 35 hits and 24 RBI with the game against Serra remaining.
Brett Haringa (Hemet Baptist Christian): The hurler struck out 10 in 2-1 win over Viewpoint of Calabasas in the first round of the CIFSS Div. VI playoffs. Haringa and company dropped their second round playoff game against Windward of Los Angeles.
Kurt Heyer (Edison, Huntington Beach): Allowed one run and just two hits while striking out seven in an 11-1 win over Lakewood to improve to 10-2. Ryan Little and Joel Lesinski hit homers in support of Heyer in the CIFSS Div. I playoff game.
Garrett Hughes (La Costa Canyon, Carlsbad): The 6-foot-8 Hughes dominated Escondido, pitching a no-hitter while bashing two home runs and driving in three runs as the Mavericks rolled, 25-0. Hughes improved his pitching record to 9-2.
Alex Jimenez (Sage Hill, Newport Beach): Improved to 10-1 on the mound as Sage Hill beat St. Anthony (Long Beach), 11-6. Chris Griffin went 3-for-4 with two doubles in support in the CIFSS Div. VI playoff game.
Christian Jones (Monte Vista, Danville): It's the last hurrah for this Oregon-bound lefthander, who's made several appearances in this feature. In the NCS Division I playoffs he pitched an eight-inning complete game, giving up only three hits with 14 whiffed, but the defense behind him committed three errors and the speedy visitors had three steals that figured in both runs of a 2-1 defeat to Deer Valley of Antioch.
Eric Karch (Clovis West, Fresno): Karch was on the march with two home runs and six RBI as the Golden Eagles won their Central Section Div. I playoff opener, 9-0, over Central of Fresno.
Chad Kim (Rolling Hills Prep, San Pedro): Kim had five hits and drove in five in 22-0 win over Wildwood. He also threw a complete game one hitter in the five-inning win. The Huskies will take on Faith Baptist in the third round of the CIFSS Div. VII playoffs.
Louie Lechich (St. Mary's, Stockton): Continues to show he can be just as impressive on the baseball diamond as he is on the football field as he allowed just two hits and struck out 11 in six inning during a 12-0 win over Tracy in the Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I playoffs. For good measure, the two-sport star also went 3-for-5 at the plate with a homer.
Garrett Levsen (Sonora, La Habra): Hurled a three-hitter in a complete game 12-2 CIFSS Div. V win over Victor Valley of Victorville. He helped himself by going 3-for-4 with a home run.
Daniel Lucak (Oxford Academy, Cypress): En route to going 4-for-4, he clouted a home run and drove in three runs in a 10-1 rout of Upland Christian in the CIFSS Div. VI playoffs.
Daniel Martin (Tulare Western, Tulare): Had a big day at the plate, as he batted in six runs against West of Bakersfield in a Central Section Div. II playoff game. Tulare Western advanced with a 9-4 triumph.

Tyler Matzek (Capistrano Valley, Mission Viejo): Hurled four innings of no-hit ball and the Cougars held on to down Wilson of Long Beach, 8-4, in a CIFSS Div. I playoff game.
Scott Morrison (Francis Parker, San Diego): Went 4-for-4 with four RBI in an 11-3 rout of High Tech of San Diego in a non-league game.
Mike Moyers & Ricky Normington (Head-Royce, Oakland): This duo and their mates from the D5 prep school in the Oakland Hills will get a chance to play in the Oakland Coliseum on Saturday for the NCS Division V crown. Senior pitcher and outfielder Moyers has certainly done his share in helping them make the appearance. Last week in a 12-5 win over University of San Francisco, he went five innings to get the win. He also had a two-run triple and scored three times as a batter. Already this week in the semis he had three hits, an RBI and scored twice in a blitzing of Valley Christian of Dublin. Normington, a 6-5, 200-pound senior first-baseman, hit a three-run homer, his fifth of the season, and also scored three times against University. Against Valley Christian, he drove in a run and scored three times.
Will Munro (San Marcos): Hurled his third straight complete game to lead the Knights to a 6-0 win over Valley Center in SD Valley League action.
Miguel Navarro (San Jacinto): Navarro struck out 10 in six innings, as San Jacinto topped Cathedral of Los Angeles 3-1. San Jac takes on Sultana of Hesperia in its next CIFSS Div. V playoff game.
David Nick (Cypress): Clubbed two home runs as Cypress held on to down Buena of Ventura, 11-10, despite a six-run sixth-inning scare by the Bulldogs in a wild CIFSS Div. II playoff game.
Blayne Ontiveros (Frontier, Bakersfield): Went 4-for-5 at the plate and had six RBI as Frontier beat North of Bakersfield, 18-8, in a Central Section Div. II playoff game.
Noah Perio (De La Salle, Concord): To say Perio has carried Sparta to the NCS Division I title game would not be an understatement. Last week's State Athlete of the Week hasn't slowed a bit. In last week's 9-7 victory over EBAL foe Amador Valley, he hit his sixth home run of the season. All the round-trippers have come in the last 12 games with 11-staight as wins. Earlier this week, he had a triple, double and three RBI in a 15-1 victory over another EBAL team, California (San Ramon), that put DLS in the title game at the Oakland Coliseum. Going into his final high school game, the college and pro draft prospect at shortstop is hitting .437 with 39 RBI, 28 of which have come in the last 12 games.
Chris Pernicano (Kearny, San Diego): Although the senior catcher went 4-for-4 with three doubles, the Komets allowed two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in a 6-5 loss to San Diego.
Ryan Sommers (Willow Glen, San Jose): Junior hurler and slugger pitched a complete game to raise his record to 11-1 in a 7-2 victory over Westmont (Campbell) in the CCS D2 playoffs. Sommers also had an RBI double. Besides the won-loss record, he has a 1.61 ERA and at the plate he's batting .429 with 32 RBI.
Stephen Ventimilia (Monterey): The Toreadores are still alive in the CCS Division II playoffs in large part due to the bat of this sophomore shortstop that in 103 at-bats this season has 51 hits (.495 BA) and 38 runs scored. Last week in respective 3-0 and 5-2 victories over Saratoga and Aragon (San Mateo), he was a combined 6-for-8 with two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored. He also had two stolen bases and has now swiped 17 in 19 attempts.
Wesley Wallace (Mt. Carmel, San Diego): Junior shortstop's second home run of the game, a two-run shot in the top of the seventh, helped deliver a 8-7 victory over Westview of San Diego.
Shawn White (Golden West, Visalia): In a wild playoff game that saw Golden West outlast East Bakersfield, 18-10, White went 3-for-6 at the plate with two doubles and added a home run good for five RBI. Both teams combined for 34 hits and eight home runs.
Aaron Wirsch (El Toro, Lake Forest): Allowed four hits while fanning 10 as the Chargers beat Rancho Cucamonga, 4-2, in a CIFSS Div. II playoff game.
SOFTBALL Amanda Allen (Morse, San Diego): Drove in the game-winning run as she finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored as the Tigers rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 6-5 conquest of Serra of San Diego.
Vivianne Atkins (San Diego): Drove in five runs and hurled a complete-game 8-6 victory over Kearny of San Diego, striking out 10, in a SD Central League game.
Samantha Avi'I (Mar Vista, Imperial Beach): The senior logged a perfect game as she fanned 12 batters in an 18-0 win over Southwest (San Diego) that clinched the San Diego South Bay League title. Avi'I came back to blank Canyon Crest Academy (San Diego) 10-0 on one hit.
Emily Banks (Tamalpais, Mill Valley): Was 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored in a 4-1 upset of Campolindo (Moraga) in the NCS Div. III playoffs.
Lucy Briggs (Branson, Ross): When Briggs and her mates take the field Saturday in an attempt to win an NCS Division V title, former Coach Bruce Hildreth will be looking down from above on his girls, having passed away in March. Briggs helped make sure they got the date with a 3-for-3 performance that included two triples and a double, five RBIs and four runs scored in a blowout of Bay School of San Francisco.
Frankie Buonocore (St. Ignatius, San Francisco): In the first-ever CCS playoff win by the Wildcats in school history, Frankie smashed two homers, added two more doubles and drove in five runs in a 11-1 win over Branham of San Jose. Buonocore is just a sophomore and was recently named to the All-West Catholic Athletic League team. St. Ignatius lost in the quarterfinals of the CCS Div. II playoffs to Westmont of Campbell, but many other sophomores in addition to Buonocore will be back next season.
Cassidy Coleman (Horizon, San Diego): Broke the San Diego Section season strikeout record when she fanned 19 batters to give her 418 for the year in a 12-3 win over Mountain Empire (Pine Valley). She added 17 more in a 10-0 perfect game win over Escondido Charter to open the playoffs and another 18 while tossing a no-hitter as the Panthers dispatched Palo Verde (Blythe), 1-0, in the second round. She's is No. 16 on the all-time state list and counting.
Amanda Cuccaro (Montgomery, Santa Rosa): The sophomore power-hitter provided all the offense needed when she blasted a solo shot and NCS-leading seventh home run in 2-0 Div. II semifinal victory over Las Lomas of Walnut Creek.
Maggie Doremus (Mt. Carmel, San Diego): Went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored to lead the Sundevils to a 5-2 win over Westview of San Diego and the Valley League title.
Heidi Floetker (Ocean View, Huntington Beach): Fired a two-hitter, striking out seven, and helped her own cause with a double and three RBI in a 6-0 CIFSS Div. V playoff win over Cabrillo of Lompoc.
Teagan Gerhart (Norco): Struck out 14 in a first-round CIFSS Div. I playoff game against Kennedy of La Palma. The Cougars were victorious, 4-0.

Jessica Harrell (Beckman, Irvine): Crushed a three-run home run en route to a 3-for-4 day as the Patriots spanked La Sierra (Riverside), 11-2, in a CIFSS Div. II playoff game.
Sam Heyman & Dani Hannan (El Segundo): Heyman went two for four with two RBIs and a run scored in a 9-0 win over Saddleback in the CIFSS Div. IV playoffs. Hannan also got the job done at the plate, as she went two for three with two runs scored and a RBI.

Vinnessa Johnson (McLane, Fresno): She went 4-for-5 at the plate with one home run and batted in five runs as McLane pounded Washington Union, 16-10, in a Central Section Div. IV playoff game. Tori Rich led Washington Union by going 4-for-5 with four steals and scored five times, but as a team Washington committed 13 errors.
Lorena Klopp (Steele Canyon, Spring Valley): Hurled a no-hitter to lead the Cougars to a 12-0 win over Grossmont South League rival in the CIFSDS Div. II playoffs.
Devin Kochergern & Darian Small (Liberty, Madera Ranchos): Small was a perfect 3-for-3 with her bat and had six RBI in a 14-1 romp for Liberty over Woodlake in a Central Section Div. V playoff game. Kochergern did even better against Fowler, as she collected five hits in five at-bats and drove in three runs in a 8-5 win. Liberty has been included in the Division V state rankings almost the entire season.
Kamerin May (Santiago, Corona): Recorded her 95th career win, allowing only three hits in the process, with a 12-1 triumph over Oxnard. She also was three for three at the plate in the CIFSS first round playoff game.
Amye McIntyre (Francis Parker, San Diego): By striking out 13 against Imperial in a 5-4 CIFSDS Div. IV playoff win, McIntyre ran her career number to 927 Ks, breaking the section record by two. She also struck out 14 batters and allowed just two hits as the Lancers scored two runs in the top of the 10th to beat Bishop's (La Jolla), 2-0, and added 12 while tossing a perfect game in a 15-0 win over Guajome Park (Vista). She needs almost 100 more strikeouts to crack California's all-time list that is published in the exclusive CalHiSports.com Record Book and Almanac.
Crissy McPhail & Suzie Ortega (Northview, Covina): McPhail pitched a no-hitter and Ortega crushed two home runs while driving in five runs in a 10-1 CIFSS DIV playoff win over Savanna of Anaheim.
