BASEBALL

Luis Acosta (Skyline, Oakland): Got the win on the mound and had two hits, an RBI and a run scored in the Titans' 15-6 win over second-place Oakland Section rival Oakland Tech.

Gary Apelian (Esperanza, Anaheim):
Apelian scattered five hits and hurled a complete game, shutting out Fountain Valley in a Sunset League contest, 5-0.

Mark Appel (Monte Vista, Danville):
Senior righthander threw a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts and two walks in a 17-0 blowout of Livermore. After that outing, the Stanford-bound hurler has a 1.04 ERA and has not given up an earned run in his last 20 innings. The performance earned him the San Francisco Chronicle Boys Athlete of the Week.

Marcos Avendano (Castle Park, Chula Vista):
The senior went 4-for-6 with a solo home run, double and five RBI in a 20-1 conquest of Mar Vista (Imperial Beach) in San Diego South Bay League play.

Isaias Barba (Hawthorne): Barba went 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in five as the Cougars topped Inglewood, 13-3.

Patrick Conroy (Drake, San Anselmo): Hit his 11th home run of the season and had five RBIs (37 this season) in a 14-6 victory over Tamalpais of Mill Valley. Earlier in the week, he pitched a three-hit shutout with seven Ks in a 3-0 win over Novato to improve to 9-3 this season.

Christian Coronado (Hemet): He doesn't have a fat contract like former Vallejo standout and current Yankees pitcher C.C. Sabathia does, but this C.C. was money as he struck out 11 and walked none in a 5-3 win over Perris.

Blake Davey (Newport Harbor, Newport Beach): Went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, including a home run, double and three RBI in a 13-5 upset of Edison (Huntington Beach).

Michael Davis (Woodcrest Christian, Riverside): Davis went 3-for-3 and drove in four in a 10-5 win over Riverside Christian.

Joey DeNato (Torrey Pines, San Diego):
Whether on the mound or at the plate, the junior lefty was untouchable. DeNato allowed just one hit while fanning 15 in just six innings while going 3-for-3 and scoring twice, as the Falcons downed San Pasqual (Escondido), 5-0.

Lucas DiCicco (San Joaquin Memorial, Fresno): Slammed a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth as Memorial edged McLane, 9-8, in a North Yosemite League game. Lucas finished going 3-for-5 at the plate and batted in five runs.

Blake Dunn (Bullard, Fresno): In a 14-5 triumph over Clovis North in a County-Metro League game, Dunn ended up 3-for-4 at the plate, including two home runs, and led the Knights to victory. He also scored three times and had three RBI. Teammate Jordan Thomason also had four hits, including a homer.

Andy Eakes (Clairemont, San Diego): The 6-foot, 185-pound freshman single-handedly matched Lincoln (San Diego) when he crushed a pair of home runs and drove in five runs in a 19-5 Central League victory. In all, Clairemont sent four balls out of the park.

Bernie Espinoza (Sunnyside, Fresno): Went 5-for-5 at the plate and batted in six runs in a lopsided 26-4 win over Madera South in a North Yosemite League game.

Josh Gaylis (San Diego Jewish Academy):
Pitched a five-inning no-hitter as SDJA scored 10 runs in the first inning and 11 in the second in a 24-0 rout of San Diego Calvary Christian.

Ivan Gonzalez (Savanna, Anaheim):
Drove in a whopping seven runs in a 25-0 runaway over Santa Ana Valley.

Steven Gosselin (California School for the Deaf, Fremont): Being hearing-impaired hasn't affected his ability to see and hit the baseball. Last week in a 16-1 win over Oakland Military, he had two doubles and four RBIs, the third four RBI game this season for the NCS's leading reported hitter. Gosselin is batting .537 with 32 RBIs.

Anthony Guerro (Anaheim): Tossed a complete game one-hitter, striking out 11 to help the Colonists clinch the Orange League title with a 1-0 victory over cross-town Western.

Angelo Gumbs (Torrance): Had three hits, including a double and a homer, in an 8-1 win over Lawndale.  Gumbs also had four RBIs.

Drew Hacker (Oaks Christian, Westlake Village): Hacker hacked two triples and a double in an 8-7 win over Malibu.

Max Hardman (San Dieguito, Leucadia): Drove in five runs, going 2-for-3 with a three-run home run and double, scoring twice, as the Mustangs dispatched Army-Navy Academy (Carlsbad), 14-0. Mike Moriarty hurled a two-hit shutout for the victors.

Justin Hepner (Carlsbad): Feeling much like a big-leaguer, the junior allowed three hits, striking out nine and walking just one in a 6-1 Palomar League win over Vista in a game played at Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres.

Patrick Jarin (Eastlake, Chula Vista): The 220-pound catcher laid into a couple of pitches and sent them flying out of the park, driving in four runs, to lead the Titans to a 16-0 whitewashing of Mater Dei Catholic (Chula Vista).

Zack Jones (Santa Teresa, San Jose): Was named the San Jose Mercury News Boys Athlete of the Week for leading the Saints to their first Mount Hamilton Division title since the Blossom Valley Athletic League adopted a three-tiered system in 1993. The senior right-hander struck out nine batters in six innings as the Saints defeated Sobrato, 4-0. Jones improved to 13-0 and continued his torrid hitting with four hits, including two doubles in two games last week.

Brandon Kinser (Pacific, San Bernardino): He struck out 17 and threw all 10 innings in a 4-3 win over Colton.

Michael Lorenzen (Fullerton): Tripled, doubled and singled twice, but it was his steal of home that raised the most dust as the Indians ripped La Habra, 12-1, in Freeway League play.

Justin Maiolo (Christian Life, Escondido):
The freshman clouted three doubles, scored four runs and drove in five in a 21-2 Citrus League win over Midway Baptist (Chula Vista).

J.J. Martinez (Galt): Had just two hits, but they were both home runs as he collected six RBIs as the Warriors scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Vista del Lago, 10-9.

Junior Martinez (Oceanside): It was a big week for the senior as he drove in 11 runs while going 10-for-14 for the Pirates. Included was a two-triple, six-RBI performance in a 13-5 win over Orange Glen (Escondido).

Tyler Matzek (Capistrano Valley, Mission Viejo):
Yielded one run on four hits, striking out five, to improve to 8-1 with a 6-1 victory over San Clemente.

Conor Meredith (Grossmont, La Mesa): Down 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth, the senior poked one out of the park and with the game still tied four innings later, he ended matters by launching another HR in an eventual 4-3 win over El Capitan (Lakeside).

Danny Moskovits (Corona del Mar): By last week's end, Moskovits had taken the Orange County lead in RBI with 36 as he drove in two runs in a 19-8 win over University (Irvine).

Matt Nadolski (Casa Grande, Petaluma): Hit .500 last week with a double, triple and four RBIs in three games. In the one game he pitched, the 6-3 lefthander with 90-MPH velocity tossed a five-hitter with 13 strikeouts in a 7-1 victory over cross-town archrival Petaluma that improved his record to 5-1. His lone loss was in his first start and only a couple of days into joining the team from basketball.

Kevin Nance (Ocean View, Huntington Beach):
Ripped three doubles while going 4-for-4 and collecting two RBI in a 13-1 spanking of Saddleback (Santa Ana).

J.J. Reading (Torrey Pines, San Diego):
The senior second baseman showed plenty of power in leading the Falcons to a double-header sweep of San Pasqual (Escondido). He hit a homer during a 9-1 win and then added another in the 10-2 nightcap.

Jacob Rebelo (Patrick Henry, San Diego): Was a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBI and a like number of runs scored in the Patriots' 23-1 spanking of Christian (El Cajon).

Jake Rodriguez (Elk Grove): The Thundering Herd's offense is one of the best in the state as they scored 51 runs in three games last week. Rodriguez led the way in the regular season finale against Valley with a 3-for-3 performance that saw him triple and drive in seven runs. Look for more on Jake later this week.

Josh Ruiz (Otay Ranch, Chula Vista):
The slim right-hander allowed just two hits while striking out 14 in a 10-0 win over Hilltop (Chula Vista) in SD Mesa League action.

Nathan Saquilon (Horizon, San Diego): The 5-10, 207-pound lefty allowed just two hits and struck out 10 batters in addition to going 2-for-2 with four RBI in a 13-0 win over La Jolla Country Day.

Alfredo Sepulveda (Ocean View, Huntington Beach):
Tossed a one-hit, complete game shutout victory over Saddleback (Santa Ana), 4-0.

Kyle Sprading (Fresno): Going up against Roosevelt of Fresno can be good for the stats and it was for Sprading as he had three doubles in a 18-0 win over the Roughriders in a North Yosemite League game.

Michael Stowers (Christian, El Cajon Valley):
It looked like the Patriots were going to go down to Serra (San Diego) in SD Eastern League play until the bottom of the seventh. That's when Christian tied the game at 4-4, bringing Stowers to the plate. He promptly bashed a three-run walk-off homer to deliver the 7-4 victory.

Mark Strazzeri (Alemany, Mission Hills): Before a loss and the hitless game against Chaminade of West Hills, Strazzeri had a 23-game hitting streak.

Cameron Taylor (Bear Creek, Stockton):
Leading the aerial attack in a football-like final score, Taylor was a perfect 3-for-3 with a triple, two homers, and six RBI as the Bruins defeated Chavez, 17-14.

John Trammer (Clairemont, San Diego):
In a 12-1 win over San Diego, the senior opened his day with a home run in the first before finishing 4-of-5 with a pair of doubles, four RBI and a pair of runs scored.

Nate Underwood (Valley Christian, San Jose):
It was on the strength of his bat that the Warriors have vaulted back into the state top 20 at No. 18 in this week's rankings. Early in the week, Underwood hit a two-run walk-off homer to give the Warriors a 7-5 win over Bellarmine of San Jose. Against Serra, he hit a three-run homer and then had the game-winning RBI with a two-out single in the top of the seventh inning as Valley Christian defeated the Padres, 8-7.

Chris Vendin (Citrus Hill, Perris):
Threw a complete game no-hitter in a 2-0 win over Menifee Heritage.

Ian Williams (Saint Vincent de Paul, Petaluma): Senior pitcher/shortstop and co-captain had a three game stretch were he was 6-for-8 with four RBI, five runs scored and a home run during five-inning doubleheader wins over Upper Lake (12-1 & 21-4) and a 10-8 win at Clear Lake. Williams was also the winning pitcher against Clear Lake and is 4-2 on the season. Through May 8, he was hitting .413 for the season with a team-leading 26 hits and 24 runs.

Aaron Wirsch (El Toro, Lake Forest): Improved his record to a perfect 9-0 after he led the Chargers to a 8-1 Sea View League win over Huntington Beach with two home runs and three RBI. His 11 homers are tops in Orange County.

SOFTBALL

Sammi Albanese (Castilleja, Palo Alto): In the past two weeks and five games this junior phenom has collected her second, third and fourth home runs and driven in 16 runs, scored eight times and gone a collective 7-for-10 at the plate. The bad news is in the first loss of the season for the Gators, a 1-0 setback to Mercy of Burlingame; Albanese gave up her first earned run of the season and now has a 0.07 ERA.

Olivia Alvarez (North, Torrance):
Threw a five-inning no hitter with 10 strikeouts in a 11-0 win over Centennial of Compton. It was her first start of the year on the mound.

Naomi Amu (El Camino, Oceanside): When her teammate looked like she was struggling, Amu came in to get her 10th win without a loss as the Wildcats downed Carlsbad, 3-2, in Palomar League play.

Cali Avery (Riverbank): Single-handedly accounted for more than half the Bruins runs that were scored, as she homered twice and drove in six in a 10-2 win at Ripon.

Devon Bargmann (El Segundo): Threw a no-hitter against Lawndale to lead her team to a 5-0 win. She had nine strikeouts and gave up zero walks.

Anna Blue (Capistrano Valley, Mission Viejo):
Blue belted a three-run home run in support of pitcher Lyndsey Rathburn's five-hitter as the Cougars stunned Tesoro (Las Flores), 4-1, in South Coast League action.

Natalie Camarda (Bishop's, La Jolla): Playing against someone other than Horizon or Parker, Camarda got to show her stuff as she fanned 15 to down Mountain Empire (Pine Valley), 6-3.

Ally Carda (Pleasant Grove, Elk Grove): She can more than hold her own at the plate as she hit a double, homer, and knocked in three runs in a 6-0 win over St. Francis. In the circle she also dominated, as she didn't allow a hit and struck out 18 in the Eagles' shutout win.

Amanda Carpenter (Santana, Santee): It looked like Santana and West Hills (Santee) were going to play for quite a while until Carpenter blasted a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to deliver a 5-3 Grossmont North League victory.

Nikki Chapman (Lutheran, Orange): Chapman's three-run homer in the top of the first inning was all pitcher Jackie Guy needed in a complete-game 6-2 Trinity League win over Rosary (Fullerton).

Cassidy Coleman (Horizon, San Diego): Coleman, only a junior, tossed a no-hitter, striking out 18 Canyon Crest (San Diego) batters in a 3-0 win to improve to 22-1. That performance came after shutting out dangerous Bishop's, 1-0, while allowing just a single hit.

Jackie Delgado (Hawthorne): Hit a three-run, walk off homerun in the eighth inning to secure a 9-7 win over Culver City. This win solidified Hawthorne's spot in the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

Shelby Drabman (Harker, San Jose):
This small school slugger, who is the reported hitting leader in the CCS at .568, was 4-for-4 with a double, triple and four RBIs, but her team lost 6-5 to Notre Dame of San Jose.

Brianna Eacker (Madison, San Diego): The freshman yielded just a pair of hits while pitching a shutout as the Warhawks captured the SD Central League title with a 3-0 win over Our Lady of Peace (San Diego). The victory improved Eacker's record to 8-1.

Leanna Flores (South, Torrance): Went a perfect three for three at the plate in an 8-2 win over Lawndale. She also recorded a homerun and three RBIs in the win.

Kellie Fox (Mt. Carmel, San Diego):
The junior shortstop went 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs and four RBI in an 11-1 Valley League win over Valley Center.

Lauren Gellerman (Westview, San Diego): Ohio University commit was impressive in going 4-for-4 with six RBI on a pair of home runs in a 12-2 victory over out-gunned Oceanside.

Jessica George (Waterford): Was given an early 1-0 lead as the Wildcats scored a run in the top of the first inning and she made that one run count, as the Wildcats remained in first place with a 1-0 victory at Mariposa. George didn't allow a run and struck out 17 in the win.

Christine Gomez (Laguna Hills, Laguna Beach): By forcing Beckman (Irvine) to hit the ball to her teammates, Gomez pitched the Hawks into a first place tie with the Patriots, 4-0. Gomez allowed six hits and struck out just one.

Allyson Hecht (Edison, Huntington Beach): Fanned 10 and scattered seven hits to give the Chargers a 3-2 Sunset League win over Marina (Huntington Beach), which snapped the Vikings' nine-game winning streak.

Brittany Helm (Torrance): Went four for four in a nine-inning 3-1 win over El Segundo. She scored two runs in the game.

Christine Higgins (Westmont, Campbell): Led Westmont to victories over Pioneer and Leigh as her team moved into the lead in the race for the Mount Hamilton Division title. She went nine innings, giving up an unearned run, in Westmont's 2-1 win over Pioneer, then shut out Leigh to improve to 15-3 with a 0.95 ERA. For her efforts Higgins was named the San Jose Mercury News Girls Athlete of the Week.

Angel Iacovetti (Mar Vista, Imperial Beach): Call Angel Ms. Versatile as she went 8-for-11 with a pair of home runs, seven RBI and five runs scored during three victories last week. She played catcher and third base in addition to pitching a complete game.

Lorena Klopp (Steele Canyon, Spring Valley): Easily won her own game as Klopp's grand slam home run was all that was needed to get Steele Canyon past Valhalla (El Cajon), 9-0.

Brianne Matthews (Mater Dei, Santa Ana): Matthews was especially sharp, allowing just two hits and striking out eight in a 4-2 Trinity League victory over Santa Margarita (RSM). The victory gave the Monarchs a tie for first place in league.

Kelly McDonald (Notre Dame, Belmont): Rebounded from a loss to Mitty to hit her seventh home run of the season later in the week during a 6-1 win over Hillsdale of San Mateo.

Amye McIntyre (Francis Parker, San Diego): McIntyre's teammates didn't have to do much as the senior mowed down 19 of the 21 batters she faced during a 3-0 perfect-game performance against Helix (La Mesa).

Jessica Moore (Sutter): The Oregon-bound senior tossed back-to-back perfect games last week and has an active streak of five straight no-hitters.

Mary Ortega (Piedmont Hills, San Jose): Senior hurler and hitter did it in the circle and in the batter's box in 6-0 and 12-4 wins over rivals Oak Grove and Leland, respectively. She tossed a no hitter with 10 strikeouts, had a hit and a run scored against Oak Grove. In the Leland win, she threw a five-hitter and only gave up one earned run while fanning eight. With bat in hand, she was 2-for-2 and reached base all five at-bats, including a double and three RBIs. On the season, Ortega is hitting .333 and has a 19-6 record with a 1.22 ERA pitching.

Cynthia Quiroz (Hawthorne): Had four hits with two doubles and two RBIs in an extra-inning 9-7 win over Culver City.

Kiana Quolas (Oaks Christian, Westlake Village): Allowed only two hits and struck out 11 in a 4-0 shutout of Ventura St. Bonaventure. At the plate, she scored three runs and hit a triple.

Genevieve Reyna (Edison, Stockton):
Was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate, with a triple, while dominating in the circle during the Vikings' 10-0 win over Stockton Stagg. She didn't allow a hit and struck out 15 in the victory.

Keilani Ricketts (Mitty, San Jose):
As CalHiSports.com Executive Editor Mark Tennis would say, the Oklahoma bound hurler and slugger "Ricketted” two more teams last week. She didn't pitch in a 4-1 victory over St. Ignatius, but she was 2-for-2 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored. In a 5-0 blanking of WCAL second-place Notre Dame (Belmont), it was all Ricketts as she tripled again and had three RBI. This time, she pitched and tossed a two-hitter with 18 strikeouts to improve to 17-0 on the season and stamp herself as a prime contender for CalHiSports.com's Ms. Softball State Player of the Year.

Yolanda Rios (Sunny Hills, Fullerton): Hurled a one-hitter, striking out 13, in a 3-0 Freeway League win over La Habra. Rios scored a run and drove in another in the victory.

Jessica Shults (Hart, Newhall): Hit a two-run homerun in the eighth inning to take a 3-1 win over rival Canyon of Canyon Country.

Lexi Slater (Ramona): Only a sophomore, Slater went 7-for-7 last week while also playing a slick shortstop for the Bulldogs. In a 10-4 win over Orange Glen (Escondido), she went 4-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and a like number of runs scored. Versus San Marcos, she was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.

Taylor Stroud (Montgomery, Santa Rosa):
Last week's CalHiSports.com Girls State Athlete of the Week gave up her first earned runs of the season in the circle, but it was her two-run home run that provided the margin of victory in a 3-2 win over Ukiah that kept the Vikings unbeaten at 22-0 and Stroud at 16-0 this season.

Cheyanne Tarango (Canyon, Anaheim):
Although Tarango was far from her normally dominant self, she managed to strand eight runners and allow zero runs before her teammates broke through for two runs in the top of the seventh in a 2-0 Century League win over El Modena and its ace, Haylie Wagner.

Stephanie Wood (University City, San Diego):
Just a junior, Wood drove in eight runs, including a grand-slam homer, while allowing just one hit on the mound in an 18-0 blanking of La Jolla.
