NOTE: We've been compiling weekly stat stars in various sports for 30 years. Part of the reason we have published them virtually every week of the school year since 1979 is to highlight many of the top performers around the state and to keep our exclusive state record book up to date. We've just printed our seventh edition and if you love the content on our site, you'll love the book, so order your copy today.

BASEBALL

Miguel Acosta (Skyline, Oakland): Former major-leaguer, current television color man and Titans coach Bip Roberts has a solid player in this senior. Against McClymonds in a 13-1 victory last week, Acosta was a one man wrecking crew. At the plate, he was 4-for-5 with a home run, double, four RBIs and two runs scored. He also pitched a complete game four-hitter with 16 strikeouts.

Christian Belleque (Fullerton): The junior right-hander collected 9 strikeouts in five innings as the Indians used three homers in the first inning to pummel La Habra, 10-1, in a Freeway League showdown.

John Bowling (Lincoln, Stockton): Was told he'd get the nod on the mound just before the game started and his coach is probably more than thrilled he made the move as Bowling gave himself an early cushion with a three-run homer. On the mound, he struck out eight and didn't allow a hit in a 6-0 Trojans win over Tracy.

Vince Bruno & Johnny Bekakis (Clayton Valley, Concord): The two biggest guns on the 10-1 Eagles, whose only loss is to state-ranked Monte Vista (Danville), are 6-foot senior Bruno and 6-foot junior Bekakis. Bruno has at least one hit in every game so far. He was "only” 4-for-8 in his last two games with three RBIs. We say only because Bruno is tearing it up at a .575 clip with 23 hits in 45 appearances with a homer, seven doubles, 18 RBIs and 13 runs scored. Bekakis is hitting .516 and was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored in the Eagles' 17-7 victory last week over College Park of Pleasant Hill.

Derek Campbell (Mater Dei, Santa Ana): Campbell's bases-loaded single in the 11th inning helped the Monarchs get past St. John Bosco (Bellflower), 5-2. Earlier, Campbell's double scored the tying run in the 7th to send the game into extra innings. His hot bad didn't cool off, either, as two days later his three-run homer catapulted Mater Dei to a six-run second inning en route to a 10-1 win.

Jose Cardona (El Camino Real, Woodland Hills): In an 11-2 win over Taft of Woodland Hills, Cardona struck out 11 to earn his fourth win on the year.

Dylan Christensen & Joe Kurrasch (JSerra, San Juan Capistrano): Christensen launched two home runs and drove in five runs as JSerra blanked Servite (Anaheim) 13-0 in Trinity League action. Kurrasch made it two straight shutouts when he blanked Santa Margarita, 6-0, striking out seven in the process.

Jeremy Collins (Linden): In a high-scoring 12-7 win over Argonaut that saw each team hit a grand slam, Collins had two hits including the Lions' grand slam to finish with five RBI.

Patrick Conroy (Drake, San Anselmo): This Pirate junior lefthander is doing it on the mound and in the batters box. Last week in a 16-3 win over San Rafael, he was 2-for-2 with a home run, double, two bases on balls, three RBIs and four runs scored. He also got the victory going all seven innings and finishing with 10 strikeouts. His overall record is a modest 4-3 for the 9-4 Pirates, but at the plate he's hitting an even .500 with five round-trippers and 19 RBIs in 51 plate appearances.

Matt Davidson (Yucaipa): In a 10-0 win over Arlington (Tenn.) High School, Davidson helped the state's top-ranked team to victory with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with 11 strikeouts and only one hit.

Derrick DeFreitas & Leighton Pangilan (Escalon): DeFreitas had three hits and drove in three runs while Pangilan allowed just one hit and struck out ten batters in four innings as the Cougars remained undefeated with a 15-0 win over Riverbank.

Mitch Delfino (Cloverdale): Was 6-for-6 combined in two games last week with three doubles but his Eagles split the pair, beating Willits and losing to Middletown. On the season, the senior shortstop and pitcher is hitting .621 with two home runs, four doubles, two triples and 14 RBIs in 38 plate appearances. On the mound, he's 1-1 in four appearances with two starts and has an ERA of 0.36 with 31 strikeouts in 31 innings pitched.

Max Derderian (Dinuba): Smacked a pair of doubles and drove in six runs as the Emperors banged around Coalinga, 26-4, in a Central Sequoia League game.

Sam Elliott (St. Mary's, Berkeley): This junior backstop didn't give his opposing catchers many balls to field when he was at bat in three Panther victories last week over Encinal (Alameda), Kennedy of Richmond and El Cerrito. He hit a home run in each game and was a combined 7-for-8 with 12 RBIs. On the season, Elliott is hitting .514 with the three homers and 17 RBIs in 42 plate appearances. Plus, he's only fanned three times.

Dominic Ficociello & Michael Lorentzen (Fullerton): The duo hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning to pace the Indians to a 7-6 win over cross-town Troy in Freeway League action. Lorentzen went 4-for-4 with two doubles in addition to the homer.

AJ Funk (Dublin): Guys who have to either face him in the batters box or pitch to him from the mound themselves feel a little funky when they face Funk. Last week in a 5-1 victory over Campolindo (Moraga), the senior pitcher/infielder tossed a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts, upping his record to 4-0. At the plate, he was 2-for-4 with a double and a run. On the season his ERA is 1.40 and his batting average is .472 in 11 games for the 7-4 Gaels.

Zach Gaddy & Jose Rojas (Anaheim): Each had 3 RBI in the fourth inning as the duo, along with Servando Ramirez, went 3-for-3 as the Colonists recorded a 21-run inning during a 25-0 win over Magnolia of Anaheim in Orange League play.

Chris Gallegos (Evergreen Valley, San Jose): Last week in a 9-8 victory over Santa Teresa League cross-town rival Willow Glen the senior left fielder blasted a three-run homer, a double and finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs. At this stage of the season, the number four appears all over his stat line. He is batting .444 with four home runs, four doubles and 24 hits in 54 at-bats. No fours in this one but he does have 23 big RBIs.

Tyler Goedell (St. Francis, Mountain View):
The sophomore outfielder helped the Lancers retain a piece of first place in the West Catholic Athletic League, getting four hits -- including a home run and three RBIs -- in a 7-4 victory over Mitty of San Jose. In a 22-4 win over St. Ignatius of San Francisco, Goedell blasted two home runs and had five RBIs.

Steven Graber & Taylor Stoecker (Orange): Graber hit for the cycle and drove in seven runs in a 19-9 rout of Santa Ana. He barely overshadowed Stoecker who went 5-for-6 with seven RBI.

Dalton Hintz (Calvary Chapel, Santa Ana): Smacked two home runs and collected two doubles while driving in four runs in a 26-5 thumping of Godinez.

Frank Hutchinson (Lawndale): He hurled a two-hitter and fanned 15 batters in a 3-2 win over Firebaugh of Lynwood.

Danny Jimenez (Fountain Valley): Blasted back-to-back home runs while going 3-for-4 in an 8-2 win over Santa Ana in the Beach Pit Classic.

Steve Knudson (El Camino, South San Francisco):
The Colts are only 7-6 but its no fault of this big backstop, who at 6-foot, 235-pounds doesn't let too many balls get past him. In fact, he doesn't have a past ball this season. At the plate, he's been tearing the cover off the ball at a .441 clip. In a 12-11 loss to Carlmont of Belmont last week, he had two home runs and five RBIs in a losing deal.

Scott Livergood (North Torrance):
Livergood pitched a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts in a 5-0 victory over Culver City.

Danny Martinez (Mary Star, San Pedro): Martinez had a grand slam and drove in five RBIs in a 10-5 win over St. Bernard of Playa del Rey.

Tyler Matzek (Capistrano Valley, Mission Viejo): What would a weekly list be without Matzek? This time he was dominant with the bat as he socked two home runs in a 9-2 win over Mission Viejo.

Blair Moore (Poly, Riverside): In a 6-1 win over St. Mary's of Stockton, Moore collected four hits and hit for the cycle.

Sam Montalvan (Eastlake, Chula Vista): Third baseman collected three hits, including a home run, to drive in six runs in a 15-1 victory over Francis Parker of San Diego.

Tom Mora (Washington, San Francisco): Last week in back-to-back 6-5 and 10-9 victories over archrival Lowell, the 6-foot senior was a combined 4-for-7 with five RBIs and four runs scored. He also pitched a complete game in the 6-5 victory to run his season record to 5-1.

Andrew Negrete (Amino, Los Angeles):
In a 19-2 win over Inglewood, Negrete had two hits and five RBIs.

Mark Newman (More, San Jose): In three games last week, two wins and a loss, the junior shortstop/pitcher was a combined 8-for-11 with four RBIs and seven runs scored. On the season, his batting average is a nifty .550 with 22 hits and 19 runs scored in 43 plate appearances. On the mound, he's 3-0 with a 0.41 ERA. In one of last week's Private School League games, a 15-2 win against Mid-Peninsula of Menlo Park, Newman went five innings and gave up no earned runs while striking out 11 batters.

Michael Newman (Valencia, Placentia):
Collected two home runs en route to a perfect 3-for-3 day with 5 RBI in a 12-8 win over Loara of Anaheim in Empire League action.

Chris Pile (Bret Harte, Angels Camp):
Drove the ball all over the yard when the Bullfrogs needed it the most as he hit two homers with four RBI in a 6-5 win over Amador.

Chris Rodgers (Buchanan, Clovis): He hit two home runs and had six RBI against Central of Fresno in a Tri-River Athletic League game that was no contest for the Bears as they rolled to a 22-2 win.

Jose Rodriguez (Rancho Buena Vista, Vista): Clubbed two home runs, a solo shot in the second and a two-run blast in the third, as the Longhorns crushed Fallbrook, 12-0, in the North County Tournament.

Harry Stanwyck (Castro Valley): Didn't allow a hit and struck out ten as his no-hitter enabled the Trojans to pick up a key 2-0 win over San Lorenzo.

Paul Strong (Marina, Huntington Beach):
Hurled a no-hitter with seven strikeouts in a 3-0 Sunset League victory over Esperanza (Anaheim).

Seth Thompson (Christian Life Academy, Escondido): His grand slam home run keyed a 17-run inning as he finished with eight RBI in a 28-3 Citrus West rout of Midway Baptist (Chula Vista).

Tyler Threw (Vista): Crushed a high fastball where only the trees behind the left field fence could catch the ball for a walk off grand slam home run. His bomb gave the Panthers their 10th straight win, and the San Diego North County Tournament title, and was the difference in a 17-15 3 1/2-hour victory over Rancho Bernardo (San Diego).

Mitch Tybruski & Phillip Evans (La Costa Canyon, Carlsbad):
Each hit a grand slam home run and joined teammates Grant Jachem and Garrett Hughes as Maverick players that bashed a total of four home runs in a 21-2 rout of San Marcos in the S.D. North County Tournament.

Kellen Urbon (Point Loma, San Diego): Sophomore pitcher picked up his fourth win and went 3-for-3 with three RBI as the Pointers (10-1) slipped past Scripps Ranch (San Diego), 12-9, to capture the San Diego City Conference Baseball Tournament championship.

Anthony Urso (Tehachapi): The junior belted two home runs and batted in seven in a 28-10 win over Shafter in a wild South Sequoia League game.

Mason Vickers, Jacob Siken & Max Dodgion (Elliot Christian, Lodi): Vickers started the game with four no-hit innings before turning the ball over to the bullpen. Siken didn't allow a hit in his two innings on the mound and Dodgion closed out the combined no-hitter with a hitless seventh inning in a 12-0 win over Venture Academy.

John Wilson (Cleveland, Reseda): Wilson surrendered only three hits and fanned 13 in a 13-2 win over Granada Hills.

SOFTBALL

Samantha Avi'I (Mar Vista, Imperial Beach): Pitched a no-hitter, fanning 16, in a 6-0 win over Olympian (Chula Vista). She then picked on the same opponent in a 10-0 victory with a solo homer in the first. Avi'l also allowed no runs and gave up only two hits to Oceanside in a 7-0 triumph.

Nicole Barba (Mt. Carmel, San Diego): The sophomore hit three home runs, going 4-for-4, scored four times and drove in eight during a 15-6 win over Ramona.

Devon Bargmann (El Segundo): The hurler pitched five perfect innings in a 10-0 win over Centennial of Compton.

Ally Carda (Pleasant Grove, Elk Grove): Nearly led her team to an upset of the number one team in the nation, Sheldon of Sacramento, and allowed just one hit and struck out 17 in a 1-0 win over St. Francis. For good measure, she doubled to drive in the game's only run.

Victoria Cardenas (Santa Ana):

Kailee Cuico (San Pedro):
This Lady Pirate pitched four shutout innings against Narbonne to pick up her ninth win of the season. She also hit a two-run home run during the first inning of the 10-0 win.

Haley Douglas (Amador Valley, Pleasanton): The junior hurler who threw a no-hitter on March 24 against California (San Ramon) in a 4-0 victory followed it up with a one-hitter in the Dons' 11-2 victory over Granada of Livermore.

Brittany Fishtrom (Grossmont, La Mesa): Although the Foothillers were playing in the consolation game of the Falcon Fiesta Tournament, she did not allow a hit in a 5-0 win over Morse (San Diego).

Kellie Fox (Mt. Carmel, San Diego): Went 3-for-3, including a grand slam home run, to drive in five runs in a 15-0 win over Orange Glen (Escondido).

Ensley Gammel & Leah Munden (Centennial, Bakersfield)

Liz Gonzalez (Millikan, Long Beach): She struck out 15 batters in a 5-1 win over Cabrillo of Long Beach.

Jolene Henderson (Sheldon, Sacramento):
Another week, another dominant performance in the circle for the Huskies. The standout pitcher struck out 18 and didn't allow a run in 13 innings as Sheldon picked up a 1-0 win over Monterey Trail.

Nicole Kuykendal (Pinole Valley, Pinole):

The junior had a home run, two doubles and six RBIs and is currently batting .786 with two homers, 12 doubles and 19 RBIs.

Janell Laront (Valley Christian, San Jose):
This junior pitcher and third-sacker got a few lumps in for the basketball team that can't beat Sacred Heart Cathedral (San Francisco) by doing it in the circle and at the plate in an 11-1 victory over the Irish. She went five innings and gave up one hit while striking out eight. In the batter's box, she was 3-for-3 with a base on balls, a home run, two RBIs and a run scored.

Trinity Leonard (St. Ignatius, San Francisco): In the Wildcats' first-ever WCAL victory over St. Francis of Mountain View, the senior center fielder and pitcher who was named the San Francisco Chronicle Girls Athlete of the Week, went 3-for-3 with a two-run double in a 4-3 victory over the Lancers. In the next game, an 8-5 victory over Lincoln (San Francisco) at the historic South Sunset yard she had a triple and five RBIs. Leonard is also a standout volleyball player who will attend MIT.

Jessica Lozano (Banning, Wilmington): This Pilot hurler threw five perfect innings in a 16-0 win over Washington of Los Angeles. She struck out ten in the outing.

Lauren Lindstrom (Oaks Christian, Westlake Village):
Lindstrom hit a game-winning home run in a 1-0 win over St. Bonaventure of Ventura.

Pat Pilpil (Oxnard): Pilpil led Oxnard's offense in a 6-1 win over Hueneme of Oxnard. She went four for four with two triples and three RBIs.

Luci Ponce (Overfelt, San Jose): Although she has five home runs on the season and is 4-0 as a pitcher, this sophomore didn't smack a homer or pitch a victory last week. She still had a big impact in the Royals' 6-0 victory over cross-town West Valley League rival Lick. Ponce was 2-for-3 with both hits doubles and she also drove in three runs. She's the reported hitting and homerun leader in the Central Coast Section with a .556 average and the five round-trippers. She also has four triples, two doubles and 20 RBIs in only 27 at-bats.

Jordan Richwood (Hillsdale, San Mateo) & Caitlin Breen (Burlingame): It's not often we list players together unless they're from the same school, but these two needed to be listed together as they both finished with no-hitters in a 1-0 win for Hillsdale. Richwood had solid command of all her pitches and rarely got behind in the count. She got the first eight outs by strikeout, struck out the side three times and finished with 20 strikeouts. Two walks kept her from a perfect game. Breen, meanwhile, finished with 14 strikeouts before allowing an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth after using the international tie-breaking system that has a runner start the inning on second base.

Daniella Sicilia (Bishop Montgomery, Torrance):
Went seven for eight in a double header against Gahr High School. In the first game, she went five for six with a grand slam, seven RBIs and three runs scored.

Tori Shepard (Lodi): Had to have mixed emotions after throwing a no-hitter and striking out 13 against Bear Creek because she suffered her second loss of the season by a 1-0 final score.

Maria Sio (Laguna Hills): Collected two doubles and 5 RBI, scoring twice herself, in a 14-1 win over University (Irvine).

Kasey Stanchek (Oak Ridge, El Dorado Hills): Nearly recorded all 15 outs in a no-hit performance by strikeout, as she fanned 14 in five innings against Cordova as the Trojans were victorious by a 14-0 final score.

Jasmine Watson (Beckman, Irvine): Blasted a three-run home run in the first inning and that's all Beckman needed in a 3-0 victory over Irvine.

Lauren Zweigle (Del Mar, San Jose):
For Willow Glen the pitches seemed to wiggle around their bats for most of the game as Zweigle allowed just one hit and struck out 17 in a 7-0 win.
