BOYS BASKETBALL:

Tony Baldocchi (Cardinal Newman, Santa Rosa): He's not the only reason Newman is currently 16-0, but he's a major reason. Last week with 20 points in a win against cross-town Piner and 22 in a win on the road at Rancho Cotate, Baldocchi earned the Santa Rosa Press Democrat boys athlete of the week. The 6-1 senior guard is currently averaging 19 points per game.

Moises Barrera (Pacifica, Oxnard): Barrera did all he could do, scoring 31 points, but it wasn't enough as the Tritons suffered a 76-73 double overtime loss to Oxnard in a Pacific View League showdown of unbeaten teams.

Marcus Beaird (Bear Creek, Stockton): He rippled home 35 points in yet another sterling effort, but it wasn't enough as the Bruins were beaten in a league game, 67-64, by Lodi.

Sean Boston (Banning, Wilmington): The Pilots always love to triumph over their archrivals the Carson Colts and Boston played a big role in their 48-45 victory with 18 points, 18 rebounds and eight blocked shots.

Hakeem Bradley (West Ranch, Valencia):
Despite his 27 points and 10 rebounds, the Wildcats had their five-game winning streak snapped by Saugus, 70-63. It was the second straight 27/10 game for Bradley who had those same numbers in a 61-49 win over Canyon of Canyon Country.

Tyler Bray (Kingsburg): The big-time junior grid-hooper scored 37 points and pulled down eight rebounds against Central Valley Christian of Visalia, but the Vikings came up short, 68-62, in a non-league game.

Cameron Brjoomi (Van Nuys): Although the Wolves' best player, Victor Rudd, transferred to new West Region power Findlay Prep in Nevada, they received a performance from Brjoomi that is as good as any Rudd had last year as he went for 31 points and 18 rebounds in a 66-50 victory over North Hollywood.

Jerry Brown (Sacred Heart Cathedral, San Francisco): According to a story in the San Francisco Chronicle, the Irish forward missed his family's annual MLK Day barbeque to suit up on Monday. What he didn't miss was the chance to shine on the hardwood this past Monday at Cal's Haas Pavilion. Fresno State-bound, this 6-foot-7 senior ignited the first boys' game of the day with a 28-point effort in a 77-72 victory over Skyline of Oakland. He scored 16 points in the first half, getting a number of put backs and easy scores while slashing to the basket.

Ricky Cardenas (Cathedral City): Despite having 10 steals and 24 points, Cardenas was unable to do it all by himself as the Lions were edged by La Quinta in Desert Valley League play, 63-59.

Johnny Dee (Rancho Buena Vista): The 5-11 sophomore collected 31 points in a 65-64 upset of La Costa Canyon of Carlsbad. The Longhorns rallied from a five-point deficit heading into the final quarter.

Laurence Degracia (Southwest, San Diego): The Raiders, who are proving that their basketball program in no way resembles the winless football team, got 34 points from the 6-foot-1 senior en route to a 71-42 South Bay League victory over Castle Park of Chula Vista.

Michael Dykema (Valley Christian, Cerritos): Senior guard netted 31 points in a 63-58 victory over Ontario Christian.

Jamaal Franklin (Serrano, Phelan):
The same week Franklin announced he would be signing with San Diego State, he had a monster game against Hesperia but it wasn't enough to prevent Serrano from having its 34-game Mojave River League streak snapped, 55-50. The 6-5 forward scored 31 points, hauled in 17 rebounds and blocked nine shots and continues to show why he is one of the state's most underappreciated talents.

Kiwi Gardner (Manteca): Had back-to-back 30-point plus efforts to help get the Buffaloes to 15-2 on the season. Last week in a 75-59 victory over cross-town arch-rival Sierra the 5-7 sophomore point guard slashed his way to a season-high 36 points with six steals and five assists. He came back this week with 35 points with eight assists and five steals in an 80-57 victory over Weston Ranch of Stockton.

Davon Harrell (L.A. Adventist): Dueces were wild for Harrell with 22 points and 22 rebounds in a 47-42 victory over Pacific Lutheran.

Rasheem Harris (Reseda): The regents are playing solid ball and opened up Valley Mission League play with a 95-55 win over Sepulveda Monroe as Harris scored 30 points.

Lonnie Jackson (Valencia): Jackson netted 30 of the Vikings' 70 points but they still came up short as Hart of Newhall captured the Foothill League win, 75-70.

Harnarinder Johal (Livingston):
The 6-foot-5 center made sure his team wouldn't lose two straight Western Athletic Conference games with 32 points in a 72-60 triumph over Patterson. Johal added 18 rebounds and seven blocks in a dominant outing.

John Kaker (Palm Desert):
Went 10-of-12 from the line and 9-of-14 from the field for 28 points to lead Palm Desert to an 82-57 win over Indio in the Desert Valley League.

Cody Kessler (Centennial, Bakersfield): He tied his own school record by scoring 42 points against North of Bakersfield in a game the Golden Hawks won, 66-52.

Derriq Knaules (Encina, Sacramento): Jumped up his outstanding season scoring average to 26.0 per game by connecting for 32 points for Encina in a 81-73 win vs. Capital Christian of Sacramento.

Kirk Law (Mid-Peninsula, Menlo Park): The reported scoring leader in the Central Coast Section plays on a tiny Div. V team, but his numbers have been anything but small. Last week in three victories over St. Lawrence of Santa Clara, More of San Jose and San Francisco Christian of San Francisco, the 5-9 senior guard had 31, 26 and 25 points respectively. Law is averaging 21.1 points per game on the 10-6 Dragons.

Reggie Lawson (Hoover, San Diego):
On a team with soph sensation Angelo Chol, Lawson stepped up by scoring a season-high 32 points for San Diego's No. 1-ranked team, leading the Cardinals to a 93-51 Eastern League victory over Morse of San Diego. He also had 18 rebounds in the easy win.

Stephon Lamar (St. Augustine, San Diego): In a key 79-76 Western League victory over favored University City, ranked No. 8 in the San Diego Section at the time, the 6-1 senior guard was unstoppable, hitting for 31 points. He added 25 points in a 62-49 win over parochial rival Cathedral Catholic and then pitched in 26 more as the Saints capped a big week by downing St. John Bosco of Bellflower, 55-52, in the Southern California Coaches' Classic at Carlsbad High.

Troy Leaf (Foothills Christian, El Cajon):
Surpassed the 2,000-point barrier for his career when the junior scored 27 points in an 83-63 victory over Div. I Eastlake of Chula Vista. Teammate Caleb Hatcher added 22 points.

Brad Lewis (Simi Valley): Had a 32-point performance to lead the Pioneers to a 82-73 Marmonte League victory over Westlake Village of Westlake.

Jules Montgomery (Chaminade, West Hills): The 6-foot-10 Montgomery needed some chiding from Eagles coach Todd Wolfson after some sub par performances and the Long Beach State commit responded. He led Chaminade to four consecutive wins by scoring 114 points, including a career-high 40 points in a 69-55 victory over Verbum Dei of Los Angeles. He added 14 rebounds and five blocked shots against Verb.

Donnell Phifer (Narbonne, Harbor City): This one is from two weeks ago, but is worth mentioning as Phifer was on fire in a 74-73 win over San Pedro he scored 40 points in the double overtime victory and is shooting over 70 percent from the field so far this season while averaging over 16 ppg.

Josh Ritchart (Forest Lake Christian, Auburn): He's been among the scoring leaders in the Sac-Joaquin Section all season, but last week came through with that rarity of rarities, a quadruple-double, in FLC's 71-56 victory over Delta of Clarksburg. Ritchart checked in with 30 points, 16 rebounds, 10 blocks and 10 assists to reach his quadruple-double.

Noel Rojas (Le Grand): In a 80-64 romp past Delhi in a Southern League game, Rojas was red hot and finished with 41 points. His teammate, Ian Thompson, added 23 points.

Robbie Rowland (Cloverdale): The junior 6-6 forward is becoming a regular to this feature. Last week after his previously netted 30 points against Kelseyville, he finished the week with a 26-point, eight rebound, five assist effort in a close win over St. Vincent's of Petaluma. Already this week he's gone for 21 points and 25 rebounds with four assists in an 89-49 that gets the Eagles to 17-2 on the season. Rowland is now averaging 23.2 points and 13.5 rebounds per contest.

Marvin Samuel (Perris):
Samuel was on top of his game as he got the score-o-meter spinning by tossing in 32 points as the Panthers collected an 80-65 Sunbelt League win over Hemet.

Robert Sandoval (Clovis East, Fresno): Pumped in 31 points to help Clovis East up its record to 15-4 with a 84-69 victory over Cleveland of Reseda.

Patrick Scott (Bear River, Lake of the Pines): The standout senior guard hit for 38 points to lead Bear River past Lincoln, 67-62, in a league game. Scott, who had 40 and 38 points in single game already this season, is averaging 26.3 ppg.

Christian Showalter (Valley View, Moreno Valley): When you toss in seven from beyond the arc, you'll likely have a decent game. Showalter did just that, pouring in 37 points to lead Valley View to an 83-66 win over La Sierra of Riverside in Inland Valley League action.

Desmond Simmons (Salesian, Richmond): Two days after Salesian beat Newark Memorial, 58-55, in OT at the MLK Day event at Cal's Haas Arena, it was a big day for the Pride's junior forward. His tip-in midway through the second quarter of a 72-47 road victory at Alameda over St. Joseph Notre Dame put him at the 1,000-point mark in his career. He finished the day with 21 points to climb to 1,016 for his Salesian career and also added 11 rebounds.

Derrell Swanson (Lakeside, Lake Elsinore): The 6-2 junior did all that he could for the Lancers, scoring 35 points, but it wasn't nearly enough as Lakeside fell to Paloma Valley, 78-65, in Sunbelt League play.

Jeremy Tyler (San Diego):
Although the Cavers never trailed, they needed a big game from the 6-11 junior center and he produced, scoring 37 points in a 68-61 Eastern League won over Patrick Henry of San Diego. Later in the week he got 25 points in a 63-42 win over Serra of San Diego and after a long plane flight and short turnaround, collected 22 points in a 56-39 loss to Columbus North of Ohio.

Ifeanyi Ume (CAMS, Carson): Ume had a monster game in a 63-53 victory over Paraclete of Lancaster as he netted 19 points and grabbed 20 rebounds.

Brandon Vandenburg (Xavier Prep, Palm Desert): If West Shores of Salton Sea continues to play opponents like this the school may want to consider going back to the CIF San Diego Section. Vandenburg was credited with 25 rebounds which led to his 30 points, as Xavier Prep rolled to a 52-36 victory.

Michael Williams (Taft, Woodland Hills): Nailed eight three-pointers and finished with 29 points to help the state-ranked Toreadors defeat Granada Hills, 81-56. The win was impressive considering some of the victories the Highlanders were able to pull out earlier in the season.

Kyle Wong (Mills, Millbrae): Has a game-high 23 points as Mills knocked off Hillsdale, sending the previously undefeated squad to its second straight defeat.

GIRLS BASKETBALL:

Annika Awbrey (King's Academy, Sunnyvale): Went over the 30-point mark for the third time this season with a 32-point effort in a 61-36 win over Harker of San Jose that gets the Knights to 7-6 on the season.

Erika Banks (Clovis East, Clovis):
Set a new school record by scoring 40 points against Yosemite of Oakhurst. Unfortunately for her, it came in a losing effort as Yosemite won the non-league game, 60-59.

Gennifer Brandon (Chatsworth): All-state candidate led L.A. City Section favorites to back-to-back wins to open West Valley League play. In a 77-28 victory over Birmingham, Brandon went for 24 points and 19 rebounds while all-city guard Monica Jackson added 29 points and eight steals. Brandon, a 6-foot-3 post presence headed to Cal, came back and went for 25 points and 28 rebounds in a 47-34 over Granada Hills as the Chancellors upped their record to 11-6.

Layshia Clarendon (Cajon, San Bernardino):
Last year's state junior of the year and University of California-bound senior scored 24 points in teaming with Arkansas recruit Darshae Burnside (22 points) to lead nationally-ranked Cowgirls to a 57-50 victory over Etiwanda of Rancho Cucamonga in the Downtown Showdown at the Staples Center.

Dominique Dinner (Monterey): The Toreadores didn't have a game for a couple of weeks, so Dinner had time to rest up and build up her appetite. Earlier this week, she and her mates feasted on Watsonville in a 64-43 victory. Dinner dined to the tune of 39 points and stole the plates from seven Wildcatz girls as well. Her per game average now sits at 25.4 ppg.

Ashley Duffy (El Capitan, Lakeside):
It looks like San Diego State will be getting a good one as the 5-foot-9 Duffy tossed in 38 points in a 61-52 triumph over Granite Hills of El Cajon in a non-league game at Granite Hills.

Lauren Engeln (Laguna Hills, Laguna Beach): There wasn't much that Engeln didn't do as Laguna Hills buried Beckman of Irvine, 64-23, in the Pacific Coast League game. Engeln single-handedly outscored Beckman with 29 points, adding eight rebounds and a like number of steals.

Janelle Flores (Palm Springs): Going a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line, Flores scored 26 points and collected six steals in a 50-39 victory over Coachella Valley in Desert Valley League action.

Cassie Harberts (San Clemente):
The Tritons continue to impress with Harberts being the focal point in a 64-34 victory over Capistrano Valley of Mission Viejo in South Coast League play. She scored 26 points and collected 10 rebounds in the easy win.

Christine Hobby (Hughson): Playing winless Amador of Sutter Creek inspired Hobby to go for a triple-double and she got it as the Huskies won, as expected, 48-25. Hobby posted 16 points and had 13 rebounds and 11 steals.

Maya Hood (La Jolla Country Day): The 5-foot-10 freshman had a breakout game as the senior less Torreys stunned Mount Miguel, the San Diego Section's No. 2 ranked team, 53-48 in the Elite Classic. Hood had 14 rebounds, seven points, five steals and four assists to allow LJCD to pull away down the stretch.

Sara James (Oak Ridge, El Dorado Hills): The junior guard's reputation as one of the state's top players continues to grow. Facing state-ranked Hanford last weekend, James displayed a multi-faceted game and was impossible to stop. She ended with a game-high 38 points, although Hanford still held on for a 70-68 victory. James is now averaging 21 ppg.

Allie Koualczuk (Williams): This 5-10 senior guard/forward had a season high 29 points with nine blocked shots, eight rebounds and five steals in a 49-30 victory over Maxwell. She's been over 20 points in eight of the Yellowjackets' 13 games and is averaging 20.1 points and 9.8 rebounds per contest.

Kaleena Lewis (Mater Dei, Santa Ana):
Big-time players step up in big-time games and that's exactly what this big-time sophomore did. Lewis scored 33 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and handed out five assists as the Monarchs beat Horthampton (Mass.) 75-46 in the Spauling Hoophall Classic at Springfield College. Northampton is the Massachusetts defending Division I state champion.

Stephanie Lopez (Banning, Wilmington): Scored 35 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the Pilots' 48-45 Marine League victory over King-Drew of Los Angeles.

Jhazmine Lynch & Soulijah Evans (Mater Dei, Chula Vista):
In a 63-53 victory over Perris in the Elite Classic at La Jolla Country Day, Evans had 16 rebounds and 14 points while Lynch tossed in 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Mater Dei out boarded Perris, 58-34 as the Crusaders' Ebone Henry added 15 boards.

Carly MacLeod (Packinghouse Christian, Redlands): Collected an impressive triple-double in a 62-23 rout of Temecula Prep in Majestic League play. MacLeod hauled in 15 rebounds, scored 20 points and blocked 10 shots.

Megan Musashi (Flintridge Prep, La Canada): Helped her team bounce back after its 44-game Prep League winning streak was snapped last week with 36 points in a 73-39 victory over Rio Hondo Prep. Musashi also added seven rebounds, six steals, four assists and two blocks, not to mention five three-pointers and a perfect 13 for 13 from the free throw line. She also had a 29-point, six-steal performance in a 67-17 victory over Webb of Claremont.

Mercedes Pardo (Pioneer, San Jose):
Last week Pardo had a solid double-double 25-point, 12-rebound outing in a 48-40 win over cross-town Hill. She came back later in the week with another double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds in a 52-32 victory against Live Oak of Morgan Hill.

Kaitlyn Peterson (Mission Viejo): Scored 20 points in the first half but Dana Hills of Dana Point slowed the Diablos after the break, limiting her to 14 and 34 for the game as the Dolphins rallied to stun Mission Viejo, 66-64 in South Coast League action.

Rachel Porter (Gahr, Cerritos): Porter is strong on the glass and she displayed her rebounding abilities in a 59-44 victory over Dominguez of Compton. She grabbed 20 rebounds and scored 17 points and came back with 21 caroms and 20 points in a losing effort (72-54) against Culver City.

Tara Puccioni (Ursuline, Santa Rosa): Last week in a 75-68 victory over cross-town arch-rival Montgomery, the junior guard poured in a career-high 30 points. Her reward was being selected the Santa Rosa Press Democrat girls athlete of the week.

Niveen Rasheed (Monte Vista, Danville): Although she had a fine season last year, leading the Mustangs to the East Bay Athletic League title, this Princeton-bound guard has recently gotten more exposure, and with it, stamped herself as one of the top all-around players in the Bay Area. Last week in a 69-28 victory over California of San Ramon, she had 21 points. In another road victory, 69-47 over Livermore, the 6-foot Rasheed, who studies ballet and dance, and also previously played soccer, danced and twirled her way to 25 points and 17 rebounds in 23 minutes of action. She saved her career performance, however, for Jan. 21 with CalHiSports.com in the stands and against new league rival, state-ranked Carondelet of Concord. Of her game-high 22 points, 17 came in the first half when Monte Vista built a 33-12 lead en route to a 53-42 victory. To go with the 22 points, she had 17 rebounds, seven steals and four assists.

Talia Rayford (St. Mary's Academy, Inglewood): Went for 17 points, 18 rebounds and seven steals in a 66-19 Santa Cruz League victory over St. Genevieve of Panorama City. In a 86-45 victory over St. Matthias, Rayford had another solid all-around game with 15 points, 17 rebounds, five steals and three assists.

Keilani Ricketts (Archbishop Mitty, San Jose):
On a team with five players 6-2 or taller, the 6-3 Oklahoma-bound softball hurler turned power forward led her team to a big 56-44 win over WCAL and cross-town rival Valley Christian; a game in which the Monarchs' size was too much for the Warriors. She only scored 14 points, but Ricketts pulled down 15 rebounds and blocked four shots. In the fourth quarter, she even popped a three-pointer from the top of the key and drew nothing but net.

Denesha Stallworth (Pinole Valley, Pinole): She was a bit under the weather last week when Berkeley knocked her Spartans out of the state rankings with a 44-39 defeat. She still had a triple-double, 13 points and 10 blocks, but the double and triple-teaming of the Yellowjackets held her to 12 points and only four free throws in the second half of the loss. Stallworth, the state's leading scorer with a 30-plus point per game average, came back strong in a 67-37 defeat of Alhambra of Martinez at the 12th Annual Martin Luther King Classic at Haas Arena, finishing with 36 points and 14 rebounds.

Gizelle Studevent (Bishop's, La Jolla): Bound for Penn State in the fall, Studevent poured in 33 points to single-handedly outscore Francis Parker of San Diego in an 89-20 Coastal League South victory. Teammate Inga Orekhova added 22.

Megan Sweet (Frontier, Bakersfield):
Just a sophomore, Sweet was sweet with a career high of 34 points against Highland of Bakersfield in a non-league game. Frontier won the game, 78-33.

Sara Villanueva (Poly, Sun Valley):
Netted 35 points in a 59-52 East Valley League victory over  North Hollywood.

Keina Vines (Pacifica, Oxnard):
The 6-foot-4 Vines went a perfect nine-for-nine from the field to score 18 points in leading Pacifica past outmanned Dos Pueblos of Goleta, 56-27.

Danisha Williamson (Mount Miguel, Spring Valley): University of San Diego signee collected a triple-double in a 73-30 Grossmont South victory over Valhalla of El Cajon. Williamson scored 26 points, dished out 10 assists and had 10 steals.

Hannah Womack (Liberty Christian, Redding): It's been a tough year for the Patriots, who are 6-9 after playing a lot of big schools before beginning Tri-Cities League play. Last week, the 5-5 point guard, who got good marks in the CalHiSports.com Girls of Summer rankings, had two excellent outings. In a 66-38 win over Westwood, she scored 32 points with six rebounds and four steals. Womack finished the week with a 25-point effort in a 63-39 victory over Dunsmuir. On the season, she's averaging 21.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.

Allison Wong (Mercy, Red Bluff): Old-time Sacramento Valley farmers used to say it got hot enough in Red Bluff in the summer to fry eggs on the sidewalk. Well, its winter and Wong is blazing, and the result is the Warrior girls are 11-3 at the midway point of the season. The Northern Section's leading scorer at 26.5 points per game was actually under her average last week with 21 points in a 49-38 victory over Chester. So far this year, the 5-6 guard has a 52-point high water mark in a win against Etna and a 43-point outing against Lower Lake.
