Boys Basketball:
Yonis Ahmed & Esaias Tsegai (Mission Bay, San Diego): The two combined for 73 points in a 76-45 win over Pioneer of Norwalk Artesia Pioneer in the San Diego Kiwanis Tournament. Ahmed scored 39 and Tsegai 34. Tsegai came back with 33 points against Highland of Utah in a 47-44 win at the Surf and Slam Tournament in San Diego.
Junior Alvarez (Orange Cove): A three-year starter at quarterback for Orange Cove switched over to basketball and promptly scored a career high 35 points in a losing effort against taller Kingsburg at the Dinuba Holiday Classic. Tyler Bray scored 24 points for Kingsburg in its 87-62 victory.
Rakim Brown (Central, Fresno): Six-foot-7 junior center scored a career high of 34 points in a 78-74 overtime victory over Livermore in a semi-final game at the 50th Holiday Invitational Basketball tournament.
Chen Cai (Maranatha Christian, San Diego): The 6-foot-7 sophomore by way of China scored 26 points, pulled down 15 rebounds and blocked five shots to lead the Eagles past Lincoln of San Diego in the semifinals of the Governor's Cup at the MaxPreps Holiday Classic.
Stephon Carter (Garces, Bakersfield): Became the 13th player in Central Section history to score over 2,000 career points, according to section historian Bob Barnett, when he scored 29 points against Edison of Fresno in a 92-88 win at the Clovis West-Nike Invitational.
Angelo Chol (Hoover, San Diego): Freshman all-american from last season collected a triple-double to lead the Cardinals to the Otay Ranch/Mater Dei Holiday Invitational title. His 17 blocked shots, 19 rebounds and 18 points lifted Hoover over Otay Ranch, 81-57.
Justin Cobbs (Bishop Montgomery, Torrance): Minnesota signee and returning CIF Southern Section II-AA co-Player of the Year played a tremendous game to help the one-beaten Knights capture the Mission Prep Tournament with a 65-58 victory over previous No. 47 FAB 50 ranked Bishop O'Connell of Arlington, Virginia in San Luis Obispo. He scored 23 points and was named tournament MVP after knocking down all four of his crucial four free throws in the final minutes. Teammate Michael Panaggio added 16 points for the Knights, who are now regionally ranked in the FAB 50. In the semifinals, Bishop Montgomery needed overtime to down nationally-ranked Taft of Woodland Hills, 60-55, as Richard Solomon netted 16 points while Cobbs chipped in 15. O'Connell walloped Campbell Hall of North Hollywood in its semifinal game and the Toreadors bounced back with a win over its rival from the San Fernando Valley in the third place game.
Laurence Degracia (Southwest, San Diego): Helping the Raiders get off to a fast start against Canada's Collingwood, Degracia tossed in 33 points en route to a 67-50 win at the Spartan Classic in Chula Vista.
Rome Delarosa (Morse, San Diego): Although the Tigers eased up in the fourth quarter, Delarosa had already done his part, scoring 40 points in an 88-49 win over El Centro Southwest at the Hilltop Tournament.
Austin Deloach (Escondido Charter): The 6-foot senior rolled in 41 points to lead Escondido Charter to a 77-65 win over the San Diego Jewish Academy in a non-league game.
Devin Dyer (Temecula Valley, Temecula): His 32 points were more than enough as Temecula Valley downed San Diego Westview, 61-43, in the Mayor's Division of the MaxPreps Holiday Classic.
Luke Evans (El Camino, Oceanside): The 6-foot-8 center scored 32 points in a 71-51 win over Montclair Prep of Van Nuys then came back with 31 in a 79-44 victory against Alemany of Mission Hills at the San Fernando Valley Tournament. Continuing his 30-point spree, Evans added 31 against Canyon Springs of Moreno Valley in a 70-62 non-league victory and 33 in a 107-80 win over Bishop Montage of Arizona at the Desert Shootout.
Marced Farley (Jurupa Valley): Single-handedly outscored Colton as he hit for 41 points in a 79-31 victory at the Hemet Ted Smith Tournament.
Marcus Farrand (Sonora, La Habra): Led the Raiders to a 67-53 win over Newbury Park with 35 points in the San Diego Mt. Carmel Tournament.
Jeremy Ford (Mission Hills, San Marcos): Didn't get nearly enough help as his 34 points fell short when Mission Hills lost to Los Osos of Rancho Cucamonga, 58-50, at the Mission Prep Christmas Classic.
Jamaal Franklin (Serrano, Phelan): Serrano rallied from 18 points down behind Franklin's 43 points and 20 rebounds in a 102-91 shootout victory over Rancho Cucamonga at the Nogales Tournament. Is there a more underappreciated talent on the West Coast than Franklin?
Devin Golston (Gahr, Cerritos): Netted 36 points for the Gladiators in a 90-76 victor over Brea-Olinda at the Sonora Tournament.
A.J. Harris (Morningside, Inglewood): Slick point guard was named MVP of the Cantwell Tournament after he led The Side to a 75-53 victor over Hamilton of Los Angeles in the championship game final. He finished the title game with 31 points, seven assists and six rebounds and after nine games, he averaging 19 points, 9.5 assists and 2,4 steals for the 6-3 Monarchs.
Allan Huddleston (Merced): Did all he could to help the Bears against the host Modesto Christian Crusaders, but his 50 points wasn't enough to prevent the Bears from falling by a 94-89 final. The University of Pacific bound senior followed it up with a 32-point game less than 12 hours later as Merced fell Saturday morning to Colony, 77-66, at the Modesto Christian Holiday Classic.
Joe Hudson (Escondido): Although Hudson scored 35 of the Cougars' 72 points, it wasn't enough as Escondido fell to Newbury Park, 79-72, at the Mt. Carmel Holiday Hoops Classic.
Lonnie Jackson (Calabasas): Sophomore had 33 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough as the Coyotes fell to Valencia, 53-51, in the first round of the Chaminade Tournament. Against Clear Lake of Houston later in the Tournament, Jackson hit the game-wining three-pointer in the right corner while being draped by two defenders and finished with 18 points in the two-point (54-52) win.
Tony Jackson (Folsom): The 5-foot-11 guard erupted for 35 points to lead Folsom past San Luis Obispo Mission Prep, 66-52, in the Senator's Cup of the MaxPreps Holiday Classic at La Costa Canyon High.
Garrett Johnson (Diamond Ranch, Pomona): His 34 points helped the Panthers edge La Habra, 74-71, at the Orange Holiday Classic.
Derriq Knaules (Encina, Sacramento): Outscored Valley Christian of Roseville on his own as he mauled his way to 45 points in a 92-43 victory over the Bulldogs.
Brian Kuklok (Poway): His 38 points helped the Titans roll over Mira Mesa of San Diego, 61-49, at the San Diego Kiwanis Tournament. He hit 17-of-17 free throws and averaged eight rebounds a game as Poway went 3-1. The 6-3 senior also scored 27 points against Pacifica.
Adam Knechtel (Hemet): Poured in 35 points against Cathedral City but it wasn't enough as Hemet lost, 71-66, in a non-league game.
Quincy Lawson (Vista): The 6-6 senior was a one-man wrecking crew as he slammed home 35 points to lead the Panthers past Blair of Pasadena, 60-51, at the Windward Classic.
Troy Leaf (Foothills Christian, El Cajon): Continued to score at a prolific rate as the junior tossed in 34 points in a 92-53 win over San Pasqual of Escondido and 30 versus previously unbeaten University City of San Diego during a 68-57 win at the Grossmont Tournament.
Robbie Lemons (Sacramento Country Day): May not receive a warm welcome the next time he heads to Placerville as he couldn't be stopped in a 61-55 win over El Dorado Adventist. He hit six three-pointers and finished with 40 points.
Brad Lewis (Simi Valley): Long range marksman was on point during a 72-65 Marmonte League victory over Calabasas. The 6-foot guard finished with 41 points, including his teams' final 15. He'll need to continue to play at the level is the Pioneers are to come close to duplicating last season's 26-2 campaign.
Justin Long & Skylar Blackmon (Rancho Cucamonga): Long tossed in 37 points and Blackmon added 36 as the two combined for 11 long-range three-pointers in a 108-97 shootout victory over Silverado of Victorville at the Inland Empire Invitational.
Malik Love (Bishop's, La Jolla): One of the San Diego Section's top guards, Love collected 35 points to lead the Knights to a 67-50 victory over Mira Mesa of San Diego in a non-league match.
Danish Mansoor (North Torrance): Netted 29 points as the Saxons downed super sophomore Cezar Guerrero and City of Industry Workman, 92-73, in the title game of the Ayala Tournament.
Darren McQueen (Moreno Valley): Even scoring 40 points wasn't nearly enough as Diamond Bar romped the Vikings, 91-77, at the Nogales Classic. Kasey Barlowe had 34 for the winners.
Dean Miller (Granite Hills, El Cajon): His 32 points came up just short as the Eagles dropped an 82-81 decision to Las Vegas Faith Lutheran at the Bishop Gorman Classic in Sin City.
Mike Miller (Mira Costa, Manhattan Beach): Played like, well, Mike in a 64-53 non-league victory over Pacifica of Garden Grove with 16 points, 21 rebounds, six assists and five steals.
Mickey Molina (Costa Mesa): Scored a career-high 34 points in a 74-56 win over the Academy of Academic Excellence of Apple Valley at the Caged Classic at Linfield Christian.
Jules Montgomery (Chaminade, West Hills): Played like a diamond in the rough with 15 points, 14 rebounds and nine blocks in a 56-40 win over St. Bonaventure of Ventura at the San Fernando Valley Invitational.
Reeves Nelson (Modesto Christian): In his first game back with the basketball team after suffering an injury playing football, Nelson didn't show much sign of rust as he scored 39 points to lead the Crusaders to a 94-89 victory over Allan Huddleston and the Merced Bears.
J.J. O'Brien (Alta Loma): The junior was omnipresent against eventual champion Eisenhower of Rialto as he scored 35 points and collected 19 rebounds in a 74-69 setback at the Inland Empire Invitational. He came back with 34 points and 14 rebounds and a much nicer result as Alta Loma downed Crossroads of Santa Monica, 79-46, at the Paloma Valley Winter Shootout.
Blake O'Donnell (Yucaipa): Led the way with 34 points as Yucaipa drilled Pacific of San Bernardino, 87-69, at the San Bernardino Kiwanis Tournament.
Deon Randall (Francis Parker, San Diego): Had a pair of 29-point games just days after leading the school's football team to the San Diego Section Division V title. The junior scored 29 in a 76-67 loss to Kearny of San Diego and another 29 in a 57-55 setback to San Diego Patrick Henry at the San Diego Kiwanis Tournament.
Josh Ritchart (Forest Lake Christian, Auburn): The Falcons needed every one of Ritchart's season-high 43 points to defeat Wheatland as they escaped with a narrow 69-68 victory. He also grabbed 16 rebounds and blocked six shots.
Juan Ruelas (Parlier): Four year starter scored 19 points in a 72-61 victory over Lindsay at the Parlier Eminince Tournament. His scoring mark set a new school record as Ruelas now has 1,741 career points, surpassing Noel Garza's 1,739 between 2002-04.
Jordan Sachs (La Habra): Couldn't ask for more than his 35 points, but La Habra needed more as the Highlanders dropped a 74-71 game to Diamond Ranch at the Orange Holiday Classic at Chapman University.
Marty Scarberry (Academy of Academic Excellence, Apple Valley): Came close to a quadruple double after scoring 40 points, handing out 15 assists, pulling down 13 rebounds and collecting eight steals in an 87-64 win over High Desert Academy in a non-tournament game.
Absalom Smith (Apple Valley): Another 30-plus point game for Smith as his 32 points and six assists were part of a 79-37 win over Chaffey at the West Covina Tournament.
T.J. Smith (San Gorgonio, San Bernardino): Drained eight three-pointers en route to scoring 32 points in a 64-51 win over Fallbrook at the Murrieta Valley Tournament game.
Jeremy Tyler (San Diego): Started with a triple double in leading the Cavers to three wins at the Maui Classic. Again Carson Graham, the reigning state sophomore player of the year tossed in 40 points, pulled down 22 boards and had 12 blocked shots. The 6-10 junior came back with 29 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocks in a 60-49 win over Fountain Valley, then scored 35 with 12 boards and eight blocks in the 76-72 semifinal win over Edison of Huntington Beach.
Ifeanyi Ume (CAMS, Carson): Went for 26 points and pulled down 19 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the California Academy of Mathematics and Science lost to Garden Grove, 76-72 at the Oxford Academy Tournament.
Ryan Watkins (Reseda): Went for 25 points and 20 rebounds in the Regents' 78-75 victory over Crespi of Encino at the San Fernando Valley Invitational. Watkins also went off for 37 points in an 88-59 win over Tucson Catalina Foothills and tossed in 33 points to lift his team to an 88-64 win over Arroyo Valley of San Bernardino at the MaxPreps Holiday Classic.
Wesley White (Inglewood): His 34 points were a major part of the Sentinels' 71-65 win over Chino Hills in the third place game at the Inland Empire Invitational.
Wesley Wright (Inglewood): Pumped in 32 points as the Sentinels defeated Chino Hills, 71-65, at the Inland Empire Tournament.
Cougar Williams (Hanford): Scored 26 points and dished out four assists to help Hanford edge Central Valley Christian, 64-62, in the Championship game of the Tulare Tournament. Williams was named tourney MVP while teammate D.J. Jackson-Maciel chipped in 17 points and 12 rebounds and was an all-tournament pick.
Derrick Williams (La Mirada): In the second round of the North Orange County Tournament, this USC recruit had a game-high 34 points and nine rebounds, but it wasn't enough as La Mirada lost to Long Beach Wilson, 62-54.
Kendall Williams (Los Osos, Rancho Cucamonga): His 13 points in the third quarter helped put the Grizzlies ahead for good as the UCLA commit finished with 37 points in a 77-63 win over Redlands East Valley at the San Bernardino Kiwanis Tournament.
Jameal York (Edison, Fresno): Help puts the clamps on unbeaten Central to win the 50th Holiday Invitational Basketball Tournament 83-58 as the tourney MVP scored 25 points. Six-foot-7 junior center Steve McClellan was also chosen to the all-tournament team or the Tigers and added 10 points.
Girls Basketball:
Dynese Adams (Vista Murrieta, Murrieta): Scored 28 points and hauled in eight rebounds in leading the Broncos to a 54-49 win over Murrieta Valley in the title game of the Titan Classic.
Darshae Burnside (Cajon, San Bernardino): Clearly the MVP after scoring 34 points, collecting 16 rebounds and blocking five shots in a 60-58 win over Etiwanda in the Magnolia Tournament championship game. Earlier the rebounding phenom and four-year standout scored 33 points and 20 rebounds for the highly-regarded Cowgirls in a 71-46 rout of Torrance. Added a triple-double of 27 points, 20 rebounds and 10 blocked shots in a 70-43 win over Temecula Great Oak at the Best of the West Tournament.
Devon Brookshire (Bishop Montgomery, Torrance): Netted 12 of her 28 points in the final period of a 79-72 pool play win over Culver City at the Ocean View Tournament.
Layshia Clarendon (Cajon, San Bernardino): Hit 11 of 13 free throws in the fourth quarter en route to a 36-point, 12-rebound, eight-assist game in a 72-54 win over Los Angeles Marlborough at the Best of the West Tournament at Ayala High in Chino Hills. Clarendon, of course, was last year's state junior of the year.
Courtney Fisher (Vallejo): Enjoyed her Christmas after scoring 45 points and grabbing 18 rebounds in the Apaches' 64-24 demolishing of El Cerrito.
Janelle Flores (Palm Springs): Had 35 of her teams' 63 points in a 73-63 loss to San Bernardino at the Temescal Canyon Tournament.
Shelley Gupilan (Bellarmine-Jefferson, Burbank): Led the Guards to the Nike Tournament of Champions Gray Division title with a 22-point, 11-rebound performance in the 57-40 championship game victory over Alemany of Mission Hills. In four games in the desert, Gupilan averaged 23 points and 14 rebounds as Bell-Jeff defeated Timpanos of Utah (74-37), Campolindo of Moraga (70-52) and L.A.C.E.S. (74-52) before downing Alemany in the championship game. Another player who shined for the Guards was Rishonda Napier, a freshman who was named to the all-tourney team.
Monica Jackson (Chatsworth): With Narbonne suffering huge graduation losses, the Lady Chancellors feel they have what it takes to claim the section crown. They will face stiff competition before jumping into league play and although they only went 1-3 at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Arizona, Jackson showed why she is one of the section's best players. In a 61-54 loss to Villa Park, she went for 36 points. A game earlier during a 66-59 loss to Chandler High of Arizona, Jackson netted 31 while teammate Gennifer Brandon chipped in 14 points and 20 rebounds.
Amanda Johnson (Mira Costa, Manhattan Beach): CIF Div. II state runner-up played well at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Arizona, finishing in seventh place. In a 57-53 victory over Chatsworth, Johnson led the way with 26 points and she had a fine all-around effort in the 58-42 seventh-place victory over Harpeth Hall of Tennessee with 23 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and seven steals.
Victoria Lippert (Cathedral Catholic, San Diego): The All-Section returnee pitched in 29 points but it wasn't nearly enough against balanced Whitney Young of Chicago in a 69-41 loss at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Arizona.
Jasmine Lister (Santiago, Corona): Tossed in 33 points in a 68-41 victory at the Best of the West Tournament. Included in her total were six three-point field goals.
Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (Mater Dei, Santa Ana): Did a little of everything, scoring 34 points by hitting six from three-point range, collecting seven rebounds and five steals as the highly-regarded Monarchs beat Colorado's Highland at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Arizona. Also scored 26 points and hit all three long-range threes as the Lady Monarchs handed Mt. Miguel of Spring Valley its first loss, 71-47, at the San Diego Prep Holiday Classic. Mosqueda-Lewis is one of the nation's top sophomores and Mater Dei, like its boys basketball team, is currently the No. 1 team in the state of California.
Arica Nassar (Temecula Valley, Temecula): By hitting 13 of 22 shots from the field, Nassar finished with 29 points but it wasn't enough as the Golden Bears dropped a 56-45 game at the Titan Classic to Murrieta Valley.
Chidiogo Ofoegbu (Mayfair, Lakewood): Dominated the paint in a 69-36 victory over Villanova Prep with 16 points, 21 rebounds and five blocks during a game at the Bell-Jeff Tournament.
Inga Orekhova & Gizelle Studevent (The Bishop's, La Jolla): Facing always-tough Canyon Springs of Moreno Valley), Orekhova and Studevent combined for 63 points in a 76-65 victory at the Holiday Classic at El Capitan High. Orekhova, bound for Northwestern, tossed in 33 points and Studevent added 30.
Emily Osga (Patrick Henry, San Diego): Recorded another 30-point game, but it wasn't enough as the Patriots continue to look for find offensive help for Osga. Henry lost to Santana of Santee at the Holiday Classic, 53-44.
Jasmine Ray (San Bernardino): Nice triple double of 30 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists plus nine steals in a 75-53 romp over Palm Springs at the Palm Springs-Palm Desert Tournament.
Samantha Talley (San Pedro): Talley tallied 14 points and controlled the glass with 19 rebounds in Pedro's 69-48 victory over the host club at the Costa Mesa Tournament.
Noelani Vilotria (Huntington Beach): Scored 36 points and collected 12 rebounds in the Oilers' 84-69 romp over Torrey Pines of San Diego at the Excaliber Classic in San Marcos.
