Usua Amanam (Bellarmine, San Jose): Some guys put up big numbers against stiffs, but not this strong, quick running back. Although the Bells are loaded with talent, it's Amanam who has continuously delivered in the clutch for the No. 7 ranked team in the state. Last week in a 25-7 CCS Open Division semifinal win over state No. 21 Serra of San Mateo, the boys who lug around the big bell they ring when the team scores, where ringing Amanam's number all night. Amanam rushed for 270 yards and three touchdowns against a defense that has played well all season. Following 6-5, 295-pound Kevin Danser, Amanam burst through the line for a 27-yard TD with 8:11 left in the fourth quarter to give the Bells an 18-7 lead. Then, he swept around right end and bolted down the sideline 32 yards with around 5 minutes remaining and the visiting Padres were ready for the bus ride home. Now he and his mates meet Valley Christian of San Jose and their excellent two-way star Cameron Marshall, for the championship and a possible CIF Division I state bowl berth.
Jeff Badger & Randy Wright (Cardinal Newman, Santa Rosa): Early on in Newman's 42-6 NCS Division II victory over Heritage (Brentwood), it looked like Badger's offensive backfield and linebacker mate Joe Ferguson was going to be the workhorse. Then, Ferguson aggravated a sore shoulder and when he left the game in the first quarter, the 6-foot, 210-pounder not only took on the rushing load but took over on defense as well. Badger rushed for 238 yards on 19 carries with two touchdowns on runs of 16 and nine yards. He also had nine tackles with three for losses. Wright completed 17 of 24 passes for 221 yards and three touchdowns. He also punted, kicked-off and was 7 of 7 on extra points.
James Boyd (Jordan, Los Angeles): Saw his season come to an end against Crenshaw of Los Angeles in the L.A. City Section quarterfinals, but overall he put together one of the finest offensive seasons in the annuals of city football. Boyd completed 16 of 32 passes for 321 yards with three touchdowns, but also three interceptions as the pass rush of Crenshaw sacked him six times. Despite a small offensive line, not to mention special teams duty and playing end on defense, Boyd finished his season with a reported 4,253 yards and 44 touchdowns. His yardage total is the second highest single-season total, surpassed only by the state-record 4,907 yards Palisades' David Koral threw for during the 1999 season.
Dionza Bradford (Serrano, Phelan): Bradford intercepted three passes in Serrano's 21-12 win over Banning in the CIF Southern Section Eastern Division quarterfinals. But wait, he added 169 yards rushing on 22 carries and two of those ended in the end zone as the Diamondbacks move into Friday night's semifinal at No. 1 seed Citrus Hill of Perris.
Richard Brehaut (Los Osos, Rancho Cucamonga): Mr. Clutch, Brehaut's 25-yard scoring pass to Sean Alston with just 6.4 seconds remaining delivered a 28-24 win over Chino Hills in the CIFSS Central Division quarterfinals. Brehaut finished 19 of 30 for 274 yards to set up a semifinal rematch with Upland, whom the Grizzlies beat 41-28 in Baseline League play earlier this season.
Jonathan Brown (Encinal, Alameda): With so many good quarterbacks in the Bay Area, this 6-foot, 200-pounder, who also plays linebacker, had been somewhat overlooked much of the season. Now, with his Jets in the NCS Division III semifinals, he's beginning to emerge as a bona fide star with numbers to match. Its not like he hasn't drawn attention from college recruiters. In fact, according to a report by Will McCulloch of the San Francisco Chronicle, Air Force has offered Brown a scholarship to play quarterback and Colorado wants him as a linebacker. Last week in a 56-8 blowout of visiting Kennedy of Fremont, Brown only threw nine passes, but completed seven for 204 yards, with five tosses going for touchdowns. He also rushed for 63 yards and had five tackles from the outside linebacker position. Going into the semis at home against Marin Catholic (Kentfield), Brown has passed for 1,164 yards with 24 TDs and only four picks; rushed for 703 yards with six runs to paydirt; made 71 tackles, recorded seven sacks and blocked a punt.
Devontae Butler (Grant, Sacramento): For the second time this season Butler ran for five touchdowns, this time in a 41-14 Sac-Joaquin Section Division II semifinal victory at home over Woodcreek of Roseville. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound junior finished with 197 yards on 22 carries. He now has 1,643 yards and 33 touchdowns with Grant not looking to exit the playoffs quite yet. He'll get to add to his total in the championship when the Pacers meet a Burbank team they handled 35-13 in the regular season.
Jamar Calhoun (J.W. North, Riverside): Although Calhoun had a brilliant evening, completing 22 of 37 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns, it wasn't enough in a 40-26 loss to Norco in the CIFSS Inland Division quarterfinals.
Jordan Canada (Duarte): Couldn't get Duarte over the hump despite 280 all-purpose yards in a 41-21 loss to Monrovia in the CIFSS Mid-Valley Division quarterfinals.
Amir Carlisle (King's Academy, Sunnyvale): Carlisle won the personal dual with Cal-bound Irish running back Dasarte Yarnway, but the team lost 40-21 to Sacred Heart Cathedral of San Francisco in the CCS Small School Division semifinals. He rushed for 194 yards with two touchdowns on 20 carries.
Derek Carr (Bakersfield Christian): Senior QB set a school record by passing for six touchdowns in a 52-0 romp past Parlier in the Central Section Div. V playoffs. Carr also completed 20 of 30 passes for 307 yards. Teammate Jake Peterson had seven receptions for 152 yards and scored five touchdowns, four coming from Carr, and one on a 43-yard interception.
Matt Ching (Salesian, Richmond): The Pride won 22-21 on the road in Middletown on a 37-yard field goal by Steve Castaneda, but it was Ching who provided all the rest of the offense to propel his team into the NCS Division IV championship game against Justin-Siena of Napa. Ching rushed for 257 yards on 29 carries and all three of his team's touchdowns.
Deontae Cooper (Citrus Hill, Perris): This big-time junior's playoff stats have been off the charts. In a 56-28 win last week over Palm Desert in the CIFSS Eastern Division quarterfinals, Cooper had 28 carries for 372 yards and four touchdowns of 77, 69, 32, and 1 yard. The week before, Cooper had 301 yards on 19 carries and four other touchdowns. He has gone over 2,500 yards for the season, has scored 43 times and is averaging more than 12 yards per carry.
Jonathon Diaz (Chaparral, Temecula): Mr. Consistency scored the first (2-yard run) and last (70-yard run) touchdowns in a 20-0 CIFSS Inland Division quarterfinal victory over Redlands East Valley. Diaz finished with 190 yards on 35 carries for the Pumas just a week after going for 183 yards and five TDs in a first-round win.
Nico Dumont & John Duysen (Marin Catholic, Kentfield): Dumont was the biggest factor in the Wildcats 42-27 mild upset of Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland) in the NCS Division III quarterfinals, tying a school record first set by UCLA's Kahlil Bell by scoring five touchdowns in a game. The 6-foot, 205-pound running back/free safety capped an eight-play, 80-yard scoring drive with his first touchdown run, scored his fourth TD to cap a 76-yard drive with 4:38 left in the first half and sealed an 11-play, 73-yard drive with his fifth score with 2:29 left in the third quarter. He finished with 125 yards on 13 carries with four touchdowns rushing and one receiving. He also had 12 tackles. Dumont got quite a bit of offensive help from Guysen who rushed for a team-high 131 yards.
Tate Forcier (Scripps Ranch, San Diego): The Falcons' Michigan-bound quarterback completed 27-of-39 passes for 341 yards and two touchdowns in a 41-21 win over Westview in the CIF San Diego Section Div. II quarterfinals. Scripps Ranch (8-3) is the No. 4 seed.
Miles Freeman (Burbank, Sacramento): "The Man as they call him at Burbank, is the biggest weapon in the Titans' arsenal, and the main reason the team is in its first section title game in the 45-year history of the school. In a Sac-Joaquin Section Div. II semifinal 36-27 win over Roseville the 6-2, 190-pound Freeman, who is a threat to run out of the option, and also plays safety on defense, scored on runs of 67, one and two yards and threw a school-record 98-yard touchdown to Lucky Dozier. A 3.6 GPA student who is also involved in student body government, Freeman is this week's Sacramento Bee's Prep Player of the Week as voted by the fans.
Seth Hanson (La Costa Canyon, Carlsbad): The Mavericks' junior running back showed he's healthy again from a shoulder injury suffered a month ago as he ran 16 times for 207 yards and caught four passes for another 111 yards in La Costa Canyon's 38-18 win over Vista in the Division I quarterfinals of the CIF San Diego Section playoffs. LCC is the No. 1 seed and improved to 9-2.
Anthony Herrera (Wilcox, Santa Clara): The Chargers are into the CCS Large School Division championship after they beat Salinas 49-28 in a game they led 35-7. Herrera got the team out of the box fast, rushing for 223 yards and two touchdowns, with both scores and 154 of the yards in the first half. He now has 1,895 yards and 21 touchdowns this season. With a game left to play in the title contest against Menlo-Atherton (Atherton), the junior tailback has a good chance of becoming the CCS rushing leader by passing Omari Carr of Oak Grove (San Jose) whose season ended last week with 1,945 yards and 29 touchdowns.
Joseph Hill (Fullerton): Even though the Indians' season ended with a 53-17 loss to Canyon of Anaheim in the CIFSS Southwest Division quarters, Hill rushed for 194 yards.
Stefphon Jefferson (El Diamante, Visalia): Rushed for a career high of 358 yards on 41 carries and scored five touchdowns of 30, 23, 31, 45, and 17 against West of Bakersfield in a Central Section Div. II playoff game won by the Miners, 42-31.
Jemeryn Jenkins (Silverado, Victorville): Isn't it supposed to get tougher as you inch closer to the Southern Section's Eastern Division championship? Try telling that to Jenkins, who accounted for seven TDs in a 59-44 shootout win over Hesperia. Jenkins was 24 of 46 for 346 yards and four TDs in the air as well as gaining 77 yards on 27 carries and three TDs on the ground. An Eastern Division semifinal rematch at Victor Valley College against Barstow Saturday is next. Silverado won the first time, 37-20.
Chris Johnson & Omar Alvarez (Rowland, Rowland Heights): The duo picked off four passes during a 52-28 victory over La Serna of Whittier in the CIFSS Southeast Division quarterfinals. Johnson returned one of the picks 55 yards for a touchdowns and teammate Chris Waldenberger added a fifth interception that he returned 25 yards for a score.
Ricky Johnson (West Covina): Surged for 218 yards rushing on 23 carries with touchdown runs of 10, 50 and 70 yards as the Bulldogs downed Burbank, 49-28, in the second round of the CIFSS Southeast Division playoffs. Johnson's outing helped prevent Burbank from advancing to the semifinals for the second time in school history. Burbank wide receiver Cody Cardenaz caught 14 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown in a losing cause.
Andrew LaVoise (Valencia): Gave a great all-around defensive effort in a 55-26 victory over Westlake in the CIFSS Northern Division quarterfinals. He recorded two sacks and also returned a fumble 31 yards for a score as the Vikings will now face No. 2 seed Moorpark in the semifinals.
Louie Lechich (St. Mary's, Stockton): A junior receiver, Lechich is often in the shadow of fellow junior wideout Joshua Harper, one of the top junior WRs in the state, but last week that wasn't the case. In his team's 32-31 win over Lincoln last week that put the Rams into this week's CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I semifinals against Merced, Lechich had nine catches for 112 yards, kicked a PAT that turned out to give St. Mary's the game-winning point and on the last play of the game came up with an interception.
Alonzo Lefridge (San Pedro): Led a great defensive charge in the Pirates' 31-0 L.A. City Section quarterfinal victory over Venice. He finished with eight tackles, three sacks and two tackles for loss after some ribbing from San Pedro head coach Mike Walsh for not making plays in the opposition's backfield over the past few weeks. The inspirational words obviously worked and Walsh hopes he has another big game this week against 11-1 Taft of Woodland Hills in the semifinals.
John Lister (Thousand Oaks): Although Lister rushed for 226 yards, including a seven-yard touchdown, it wasn't enough in the CIFSS Northern Division quarterfinal loss to Saugus, 35-28.
Cameron Loeffler (Exeter): Senior RB ended his career with 238 yards on 29 carries and scored three touchdowns (9, 12, 74) in a CIF 29-28 Central Section Div. IV playoff loss to Washington of Easton. Junior QB Adam McCurley led Washington with 271 yards and three TDs passing.
Jesse Lownsbury (Yosemite, Oakhurst): Had a big game passing as he went 19-of 34 for 298 yards and one touchdown in a 31-24 win over Dinuba in a CIF Central Section Div. III playoff game. Wide-receiver Jackson Glines had a fine game for Yosemite by catching nine receptions for 126 yards and one score.
Michael Madkins & Russell Vonschoech (Pleasant Grove, Elk Grove): This pair was instrumental in a 21-18 victory over Nevada Union in a Sac-Joaquin Section Division I quarterfinal. Both are 5-foot-6, and at 155-pounds apiece, combined weigh less than some high school linemen. Madkins rushed for a touchdown and had two interceptions, returning the first 31 yards for a score to make it 21-0. Vonschoech had a 25-yard touchdown run, an interception and 11 tackles.
Sean Mannion (Foothill, Pleasanton): Mannion connected with Patrick Lynch on a 15-yard touchdown pass with seven seconds remaining for the game winner in a 48-41 barnburner win at home against Freedom of Oakley in an NCS Div. I quarterfinal. The junior quarterback finished 16-of-29 for 403 yards and four touchdowns. His favorite target was Nathan Hinke who had four catches for 146 yards and two TDs all in the first half. The reward for Mannion and the rest of NCS Div. I fourth-seeded Falcons is another trip to De La Salle where earlier this season they lost, 63-7.
Rico Marmalejo (St. Genevieve, Panorama City): Rushed for 198 yards and also caught six passes for 96 yards, but it wasn't enough as Riverside Christian advanced to the CIFSS Northeast Division semifinals with a 49-28 victory over the Valiants.
Taylor Martinez (Centennial, Corona): Accounted for five touchdowns in the state-ranked Huskies' 41-14 rout of Vista Murrieta to move into the CIFSS Inland Division semifinals Friday at home against Murrieta Valley. Martinez was 15 of 20 for 211 yards and three TDs passing in addition to 90 yards rushing, including scores of three and 32 yards.
Jason Mayer & Donnie Simonsen (Trabuco Hills, Mission Viejo): The Mustangs' No. 3 running back, Simonsen rushed for 191 yards on 31 carries including the game-winning TD as Trabuco Hills edged Western of Anaheim, 28-21, in a CISS Southwest Division quarterfinal game. QB Mayer was 13 of 19 passing for 201 yards and TDs of seven, 16 and 20 yards.
Mason Mills (Coronado): The senior quarterback completed 14-of-18 passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns and carried the ball 11 times for 46 more yards and another score to lead the Islanders to a 35-20 win over Santa Fe Christian in the quarterfinals of the CIF San Diego Section Division IV playoffs. Mills enters this week with 2,659 yards and 35 TDs through the air plus 420 more yards and six more TDs on the ground.
Stanley Moody (Tomales): The workhorse in Coach Leon Feliciano's "toss offense is this 5-foot-11, 200-pound wingback. Moody went over 200-yards for the third time this season, rushing for 201 yards and two touchdowns in the Braves 30-22 loss to St. Elizabeth of Oakland. The good news is after finishing with 1,777 yards and 26 touchdowns, the junior will be back next season at the small school that cradles the Marin/Sonoma County border not far from the coast.
D. J. Morgan (Taft, Woodland Hills): This top-notch junior back had another spectacular outing for the Toreadors, who advanced to the CIF L.A. City Section semifinals courtesy of its 40-17 victory over San Fernando. In wet and messy conditions, Morgan burned the Tigers' defense by hydroplaning for 176 yards on 23 carries, including a spectacular 50-yard jaunt on a delay handoff, and catching passes for another 62 yards. Going into a semifinal showdown versus San Pedro in a battle of one-beaten teams, Morgan has accounted for 2,370 yards rushing and passing and has scored 33 touchdowns.
Brett Nottingham (Monte Vista, Danville): The junior signal-caller led a comeback from a 36-14 deficit only to lose after he got picked twice in the fourth quarter in a 43-36 loss to San Ramon Valley in the NCS Div. I quarterfinals. Still, Nottingham finished with 386 yards and five touchdowns but also four big interceptions. Even with a bye two weeks ago in the playoffs, Nottingham finishes the season with 3,183 yards passing and 39 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
Deon Randall (Francis Parker, San Diego): Randall accounted for five touchdowns in a 76-3 win over Calvin Christian in the CIFSDS Div. V quarterfinals. He returned two interceptions of 32 and 52 yards for the Lancers' first two touchdowns of the game, rushed for a 65-yard score and threw two touchdown passes. Francis Parker (10-1) is the No. 1 seed.
Desi Rodriguez (Saugus): Accounted for 339 yards of offense and five touchdowns in the Centurions' 35-28 victory over Thousand Oaks in the quarterfinals of the CIFSS Northern Division playoffs. With his arm he threw two touchdowns and passed for 81 yards and with his feet he added 258 yards rushing and three additional scores. Going into the semifinals against state-ranked St. Bonaventure, Rodriguez has rushed for 1,721 yards and 20 touchdowns and passed for 1,527 yards and an additional 19 touchdowns. For Thousand Oaks, RB John Lister concluded his season with another fine game, rushing for 211 yards and a touchdown in 21 carries.
Travis Roth & Corey Smith (North County Christian, Atascadero): Although NCC lost to Desert Chapel in the CIFSS 8-man semifinals, Roth was outstanding, completing 18 of 36 for 277 yards and four TDs. Smith snagged 11 of those passes for 124 yards.
Robbie Rouse (Madison, San Diego): The Warhawks' senior running back carried 23 times for 268 yards and three touchdowns in a 26-6 win over La Jolla in the CIFSDS Div. IV quarterfinals. Madison (11-0) is the No. 2 seed.
Matt Satchwell (Casa Roble, Orangevale): The Rams remain undefeated at 12-0 and continue in quest of a CIF Division II Bowl berth. Last week they head butted Rodriguez (Fairfield) out of the Sac-Joaquin Section Div. III playoffs 52-35 at home. Satchwell used his horns to the tune of 246 yards rushing and five touchdowns, his fourth 200-yard effort this season. He now has 1,939 yards and 29 touchdowns with at least one more game to play.
Ricky Seale (Escondido): The junior running back was a workhorse as he carried 35 times for 233 yards, including an 88-yard touchdown run, as the Cougars defeated Fallbrook 14-12 in the CIFSDS Div. I quarterfinals. Seale also made a tackle at the one-yard line on a two-point conversion try that
would have tied the game with 1:40 to play. Escondido (9-2) is the No. 2 seed.
Michael Spanos (Lincoln, Stockton): Grandson of San Diego Chargers' owner Alex Spanos almost led the Trojans to a huge victory in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I playoffs against St. Mary's of Stockton, but his team came up one point short in a 32-31 loss. Spanos shined with 24 carries for 275 yards and two TDs. His 71-yard run with just under four minutes left in the game gave Lincoln a 31-25 lead. A missed PAT came back to haunt the Trojans when St. Mary's was able to answer that TD with one of its own.
Jerry Stone (Lakewood): Unfortunately it was Stone whose early season ineligibility cost the Lancers four victories, but fortunately for Lakewood he's made amends in the post-season, averaging 203 yards rushing per game in upset wins over Servite and Mission Viejo in the CIFSS Pac-Five Division playoffs. Against the Diablos in the quarterfinals, Stone got Lakewood on the board with a 44-yard touchdown and added two third-quarter scores in his team's eventual 28-7 victory. He finished with 170 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries.
Tra Sumler (Rosemead): Churned for 260 yards rushing and scored five touchdowns to lead his team to a 59-22 victory over San Dimas in the CIFSS Mid-Valley Division quarterfinals.
DeAnthony Thomas (Crenshaw, Los Angeles): This super sophomore came up big once again to help the Cougars advance to the CIF L.A. City Section semifinals with a 39-20 victory over Jordan of Los Angeles. He finished with 128 yards rushing on 18 carries and also came up with two interceptions on defense. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound sophomore back is one of the state's elite sprinters and when we saw his team against Lakewood earlier in the season, some of the players quietly told us "The Black Mamba" is also one of the team's hardest hitters. His best play against Jordan, came on a serpentine 13-yard run where he slipped two tacklers and raced to the end zone to give Crenshaw a 25-13 lead it would not relinquish. Even if the Cougars don't win the L.A. City Section title this year, they'll be one of the favorites next year as sophomore QB Marquis Thompson completed 11 of 14 passes for 147 yards while the Cougars' defense sacked USC-bound QB James Boyd six times. Four of those came courtesy of sophomore James Brock.
Greg Watson & Irshad Stolden (Rancho Cucamonga): Watson accounted for an even 300 yards by passing for 228 and rushing for 72 in a 28-20 win over Paloma Valley (Menifee) to advance to the CIFSS Central Division semifinals at Cajon (San Bernardino) on Friday. Stolden pulled in TD passes of 67 and 66 yards.
Anthony Wilkerson (Tustin): Rushed for 201 yards, scoring four times, as well as catching a pass for a fifth score as the Tillers rolled over Pacifica of Garden Grove, 49-21, to advance to the CIFSS Southwest Division semifinals against Canyon of Anaheim, a team they beat by 29 points in Century League play.
Marquise Williams (Monrovia): Rushed for 233 yards and scored five touchdowns to lead Monrovia to a 41-21 victory over Duarte in the CIFSS Mid-Valley Division quarterfinals. He broke numerous tackles on most of his carries and scored on runs of four, 36, 68, 36, and 30 yards.
Carl Winston (Serra, Gardena): Rushed for 175 yards on 24 carries and scored five touchdowns to help the Cavaliers record a 55-21 victory over Verbum Dei of Los Angeles in the CIFSS Northwest Division playoffs. Winston hit pay dirt from 44, 45, one, seven and nine yards out.
Jordan Wynn (Oceanside): The senior quarterback led the Pirates to a bounce-back 41-0 win over Lincoln in the quarterfinals of the CIF San Diego Section Div. II quarterfinals. Oceanside had finished the regular-season with a tie against Ramona and then had a bye week. Wynn, who changed his oral commitment from Colorado to Utah, completed 14-of-24 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. Oceanside (10-0-1) is the No. 1 seed.
Dasarte Yarnway & Harry Libarle (Sacred Heart Cathedral, San Francisco): The Irish can't get any respect except on the field, and this pair got plenty of it when the CCS Small School Division seventh-seed knocked off No. 3 seed King's Academy 40-21 at Terra Nova in Pacifica. Cal-bound Yarnway finished with 141 yards rushing and one touchdown and caught a 46-yard pass for another score. Sophomore fullback Libarle rushed for 123 yards and two touchdowns on only nine carries. Next up for the Irish duo is a championship tilt with Sacred Heart Prep of Atherton.
