Football:
Wade Amaral (Cardinal Newman, Santa Rosa): His teammates Randy Wright and Jeff Badger usually get all the ink for the Div. III bowl-bound Cardinals, but in Coach Paul Cronin's no huddle, hurry-up spread offense there always seems to be wide receivers that can go get the ball and this year the top producer is Amaral. In the NCS Division II title game, Amaral snagged eight balls for 153 yards and a TD in a 17-7 victory. Going into the Saturday game against St. Bonaventure, Amaral has a team-high 47 catches for 771 yards and 14 touchdowns on a team with four players with over 25 catches and 400 yards receiving.
David Arteaga (La Habra): Senior safety closed out his career in fine fashion as he was credited with 23 tackles in the Highlanders' 26-14 victory over Tustin in the CIFSS Southwest Division finals. Tustin came into the contest averaging 375 yards rushing and 41 points per game but were limited to 276 total yards.
Brant Botill (Corcoran): The pride of the Panthers gave it his all in his final high school game by rushing for 241 yards on 28 carries and scored three touchdowns of 3, 51, 2 yards, but it wasn't nearly enough as Corcoran lost to Bakersfield Christian, 49-27, in the Central Section Div. V championship.
Nick Cole (Clayton Valley, Concord): Head coach Herc Pardi says Cole is "one of the best receivers I've coached" and the 6-3, 195-pounder certainly shined in Clayton Valley's 17-7 loss to Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa in the North Coast Section Div. II final. Cole had seven catches for 64 yards, picked off two passes on defense and had a fumble recovery plus eight tackles.
Deontae Cooper (Citrus Hill, Perris): He rushed for 282 yards on 33 carries and three TDs as Citrus Hill won the CIFSS Eastern Division by 31-27 over Barstow. During the four-game playoffs, he rushed for 1,126 yards and 15 touchdowns. Cooper also ended the season with 2,948 yards rushing to become the reported state rushing leader. And if you're wondering whether the player with 48 TDs is just a flash in the pan from an unknown school, ESPN RISE recruiting analyst Greg Biggins said: "I love this kid. He looks great on film.
Fred Gaines (Chowchilla): Scored two touchdowns on runs of 63 and 73 yards and ended up with 173 yards for the game on 12 carries as Chowchilla blanked Kingsburg, 20-0, in the Central Section Div. IV championship. The team set a new Central Section record by making 31 two-point runs for the season.
Jontell Reedom (Tulare): Ended his high school career in grand style, as he rushed for 287 yards on 23 carries and scored one touchdown on a nine-yard run in a 42-33 triumph over El Diamante of Visalia in the Central Section Div. II final. Quarterback James Guerrero also passed for three touchdowns and scored two on runs. Tulare finished unbeaten for the season with a 13-0 record. The last time that happened was in 1945 under icon Pete Beiden, who later became the baseball coach at Fresno State.
Omar Sanchez (Arleta): Rushed for 201 yards to help second-year program record a 31-8 victory over Franklin of Los Angeles in the L.A. City Section Invitational (3A) final. It was the fifth section title overall for Mustangs coach Jeff Engliman, who won two city 4A titles at Sylmar and back-to-back 3A titles at Manual Arts in the 1980's back when the 3A title actually had some of the city's better teams competing in that division. Arleta finished its season 14-0 and probably could play in the upper division on Engliman's coaching alone.
Christian Taylor (Bakersfield Christian): Sometimes forgotten running back was the star of the game by scoring four touchdowns on runs of 4, 80, 14, 57 yards on 18 carries and 206 yards in team's 49-27 win over Corcoran in Central Section Div. V final. Teammate Derek Carr passed for two touchdowns and wide receiver Jake Peterson caught only three passes in very foggy conditions.
Cody Vaz (St. Mary's, Stockton): After being on the short end of high-scoring final in last year's Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I final, Vaz was on the winning side in a 36-14 win against Pleasant Grove of Elk Grove in this year's final. Vaz completed 19 of 30 passes for 250 yards and one TD. It is the second section title in five years for St. Mary's. The QB from the last title team, Willie Tuitama, is the current QB at Arizona.
Boys Basketball:
Greg Allen (Eureka): The Loggers rolled Red Bluff in the consolation championship of the Arcata Invitational and this 6-foot-2 senior had the most lumber. For the second time this season, Allen was over 30 points, dropping in an even 40 in a 70-60 victory. So far in a 4-2 season he's averaging 26.8 points and 7.3 rebounds a game.
Yoni Aynalem (Granite Hills, Apple Valley): Was on fire from beyond the arc as he tossed in eight three-point field goals en route to 33 points in a 72-64 victory over Quartz Hill in the Rotary Scorpion Basketball Classic.
Brian Barbour (Monte Vista, Danville): Poured in 36 points, including 18 of his team's 31 points in the first half, as the Mustangs took a 64-54 decision last week from Oakland High.
Marcus Beaird (Bear Creek, Stockton): Beaird helped the Bruins shave Laguna Creek of Elk Grove, 63-60, with 34 points and 16 rebounds. He's averaging 26.7 ppg through his first few games.
Skylar Blackmon (Rancho Cucamonga): Blackmon's seven three-point field goals were the major portion of his 29 points as he teamed with Mike Karimu (21 points, 10 rebounds) in a 95-75 win over North Hollywood at the Glendora Tournament.
Jordan Burris (Stockdale, Bakersfield): In a 80-78 win against Bakersfield, Burris had another strong outing with 36 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Rue Critchfield & Ryan Doubiago (International, San Francisco): Senior wings each had double- doubles to lead International past Mission of San Francisco in the championship game of the Gryphon Classic at Crystal Springs-Upland in Hillsborough. Critchfield, who's 6-foot-3, finished with 25 points and 13 rebounds, and Doubiago who's 6-6, had 23 points and 13 boards. On the season Critchfield is averaging 19.3 ppg and Doubiago is recording 20 points and 14.8 boards a contest.
Tyler Cross (The Rock Academy, San Diego): Just a sophomore, the 6-6 forward hit for 34 points in a 107-34 rout of San Diego's Creative and Performing Arts Academy. He also had a 37-point performance in a 78-29 non-league victory over Lutheran of San Diego.
Jared Cunningham (San Leandro): One of the Bay Area's top teams, the Pirates are 3-1 with a nine-point loss to McClymonds as their only blemish and much of the reason is Cunningham. The 6-foot-4 senior guard who, according to ESPN RISE Basketball Recruiting, is being looked at by Cal, San Diego State, Washington State, Santa Clara and Hawaii, is currently averaging 21.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per contest. Against Mack to open the season he had 25 points but his high water mark is 28 against Newark Memorial in a 70-58 victory last week.
Lucas Devenny (Piner): UC Santa Barbara-bound Big Luke has started big and in six games (5-1) the 6-foot-9 center is averaging 23.8 points, 10.6 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game. His high water mark was a 34-point, 21-rebound performance in a 64-49 victory over Franklin of Elk Grove.
Jamaal Franklin (Serrano, Phelan): A stat star regular from last season, Franklin racked up 35 points to lead Serrano past Selma, 86-45. Franklin is one of the most underrated prospects nationally but a great summer with the California Supreme AAU club help put him on the recruiting map.
Joe Hudson (Escondido): The 5-11 junior hit for 33 points in a 67-55 win over Steele Canyon at the Eagle-Vaquero Tournament.
Idris ibn Idris (Hoover, San Diego): Was named MVP of the Titan Tip-Off Classic with 26 points and seven assists in a 81-64 championship game victory over Lincoln of San Diego. So far this season, the 6-3 senior is averaging 20.3 ppg and 6.3 apg for a 5-1 club. Anglo Chol, a 6-9 sophomore, also had a big week with 16 points, 13 rebounds and 10 blocks in a win over Carlsbad and 17 points, 16 rebounds and nine blocks in the win over Lincoln. Chol is currently averaging 12.2 points, 15.7 rebounds and 10.5 blocks per game.
Nick Jenson (Centennial, Bakersfield): Came up with 32 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Golden Hawks past West of Bakersfield, 99-79. Jenson made 10 of 13 shots from the floor and was 12 of 18 on free throws. Josh Dixon knocked down 34 points to lead West.
Brad Lewis (Simi Valley): Senior guard pumped in a game high 34 points as the Pioneers captured the championship of the Falcon Classic with a 70-54 victory over host Crescenta Valley. Lewis' performance, which included 23 points in the second half, helped Simi win the tournament for the second consecutive year. Lewis scored 33 points twice in the event and averaged 25.5 ppg. He's shooting 51 percent from three-point land so far this season.
Christian Manoli (Terra Linda): The Trojans look like they'll be challenging Branson in the Marin County Athletic League and Manoli has been a big factor in the team's re-emergence. Last week he led the team to the title in the 43rd Annual Carl "Red Brown Tournament at Drake in San Anselmo. In a 65-56 semifinal victory over Dublin, the 6-foot-4 junior had 17 points, seven rebounds, four steals and four assists. In the title game 50-43 win over the host Pirates Manoli had game-highs of 20 points and 12 rebounds.
Reese Morgan (Peninsula, Rolling Hills Estates): The Panthers lost in the 13th place game at the Ocean View TOC but got a solid performance from one of the better sophomores in the CIF Southern Section. In the 85-74 defeat at the hands of Harvard-Westlake, last year's Bay League Player of the Year scored 34 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Morgan has scored in double figures in every game so far this season.
James Nelson (Desert Christian, Lancaster): His 32 points and 13 rebounds propelled Desert Christian to a 68-52 win over Cornerstone Christian at the Lightning Classic in Joshua Springs.
Rafa Rojas-Reyes (Brawley): The 6-3 junior netted 34 points against Imperial (74-64 loss) and 30 against Mater Dei of Chula Vista in a 69-64 setback at the Imperial Tournament.
Marty Scarberry (Academy for Academic Excellence, Apple Valley): His 34 points and 10 rebounds helped beat Riverside Prep, 66-44.
David Weaver (Venture Academy, Stockton): Averaging 29.7 ppg so far this season, Weaver had 32 points last week in a 61-44 win over Turlock Christian and also 31 in a 75-17 romp past Mountain Oaks Christian.
Girls Basketball:
Camille Buckley (Colony, Ontario): Four-year standout pulled down 17 rebounds and tossed in 23 points as Colony downed Los Osos, 54-50 in non-league play.
Janae Coffee (Clovis West, Fresno): The 6-3 center had the best week of her career so far last week for the Golden Eagles. First, she had 30 points and 19 rebounds in a 90-74 win over Reed of Sparks, Nev., in the semifinals of Clovis West's Christmas tourney. In the finals, with the Golden Eagles going up against nationally-ranked St. Mary's of Stockton, Coffee was hot with 26 points and eight rebounds in a 57-50 victory. Morgan Hatten also stepped up for Clovis West as she played against St. Mary's with 17 stitches and bandages on her head but still brought the ball up consistently against the vaunted Rams' press.
Jasmine Evans (Gunn, Palo Alto): Gunn is 8-0 and its closest margin of victory has been nine points and this Harvard-bound guard is the main reason. Last week she led the Titans to the championship of the Pinewood tournament with a game-high 14 points with six steals and five rebounds in a 44-26 victory over the hosts in a game they led 35-15 after three quarters. So far this season the 5-9 guard is averaging 20.8 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.9 steals a game. The game against Pinewood was one of only two times she's been under 20 points in a game and has a high of 27 against Carlmont of Belmont.
Janelle Flores (Palm Springs): Flores won on fire as she scored 39 points, but it wasn't quite enough as the Indians lost to Twentynine Palms, 58-56.
Lauren Godde & Alyssa Cabri (Argonaut, Jackson): Godde, a 6-foot junior forward and Cabri, a 5-5 sophomore point guard, each had 23 points in a victory over Redwood Christian. In a 4-0 start in which none of the games has been close, Godde is averaging 16.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.8 steals and 2.8 blocks, while Cabri is 15.8 points, 4.3 assists and 2.8 steals a game, both in limited time due to blowouts.
Rebecca Griffin (Santa Barbara): Burying seven long-range three-point bombs four in the fourth quarter -- Griffin finished with 28 points for the Lady Dons in a 53-41 win over West Ranch of Valencia at the Gold Coast Tournament.
Nerissa Hansen (Novato): Proving football isn't the only sports where the Hornets have a star; this 5-foot-11 junior power forward had 33 points and 13 rebounds last week in a 61-36 victory over De Anza of Richmond. For the season she is averaging 22 points and eight rebounds for a 3-2 squad.
Brittoni Jefferson (Quartz Hill): Put forth a fine defensive effort with five steaks, three blocked shots and 17 rebounds but it wasn't enough as Quartz Hill fell to Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta in an opening round game at the Burroughs Magnolia Park Optimist Tournament.
Kaleena Lewis & Alexyz Vailotama (Mater Dei, Santa Ana): Lewis, one of the best underclass players in the nation, was named MVP of the Mater Dei Hoops Classic after scoring 27 points, including 6 of 8 from three-point range, in a 77-43 win over Knight of Palmdale. Fellow sophomore Vailotama had a nice double-double of 18 points and 14 boards in the championship game victory.
Victoria Lippert (Cathedral Catholic, San Diego): An all-SD Section selection a year ago, the 5-11 Lippert netted 29 in a 64-47 win over Hilltop of Chula Vista at the Matador Classic.
Lauren Magee (Redwood Christian, Castro Valley): The biggest reason for Redwood Christian's rise to prominence is this 6-foot-2 junior who is averaging 22.9 points and shooting 76 percent from the charity stripe. So far, she's led the 6-1 squad to a second place finish in the Escalon Tournament, where they lost to Argonaut and a title in the Calistoga Tournament last week. For the three games of the Calistoga tourney, Magee had 26, 32 and 28 points in a 59-35 title game victory over the host Wildcats. In the Argonaut game she had 22 points in a 73-37 loss.
Kalyn McMack (San Dieguito, Encinitas): Tossed in 31 points in a 56-21 win over Tri-City Christian of Escondido at the Lady Mustang Tournament. The total included five three-pointers.
Laney Ming (Granada Hills): The Ming dynasty controlled the boards as she grabbed 23 rebounds and added 18 points, a game-high, during a 44-37 victory over Sepulveda of Monroe.
Emily Osga (Patrick Henry, San Diego): The multi-sport standout (track) pitched in 32 points to lead the Patriots to a 58-50 victory over Torrey Pines at the Bronco Tournament at Rancho Bernardo.
Lara Richmond (Apple Valley Christian): Despite converting 13 of 16 free throws, scoring 27 points and hauling in 13 rebounds, it wasn't nearly enough in a 59-39 setback to Redlands Adventist.
Sage Romberg (McKinleyville): One of the top junior big girls in Northern California who can handle the rock, this 6-footer is doing it all for the 5-2 Panthers. Last week she led her team to victory in the REIBT Tournament at Healdsburg High and was named the tournament MVP. In the semis against Miramonte (Orinda), Romberg had 26 points, 14 rebounds and four assists in a 55-46 victory. In the championship against Clayton Valley of Concord, she had 17 points, 13 rebounds, four steals, three blocks and three assists in a 43-31 win for the title. Her averages this season so far are 19.2 points, 12.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 3.5 blocks and 2.2 steals,
Yvonne Sanchez (Garey, Pomona): Filled the basket with 30 points in a 63-30 win over Pomona in a rare December non-tournament encounter.
Denesha Stallworth (Pinole Valley, Pinole): The 6-foot-3 Cal-bound post who earned one of the highest marks in the CalHiSports.com Girls of Summer rankings has been hot right out of the box. Currently, she's the leading reported scorer in the North Coast Section with a 28 ppg average while adding 10.8 rebounds a contest. So far this season for the 5-2 Spartans, Stallworth has led them to a second place finish in the Santa Barbara Classic. In the tournament opening 58-31 win over Ocean View of Huntington Beach, she scored 32 points with 11 rebounds and three blocks. Then against Dos Pueblos of Goleta she threw down 34 points with 13 rebounds in a 72-48 victory. In the championship against host Santa Barbara, Stallworth had 28 points and nine rebounds but it wasn't enough as the team fell 55-52. In the other loss against a state-ranked Clovis West team that has knocked off St. Mary's of Stockton, Stallworth scored 27 points.
Rebecca Taylor (St. Elizabeth, Oakland): This 6-foot senior center has been doing enough glass cleaning to be the NCS reported rebounding leader in the early season. She's had a double-double in all but one of the five games she's played in and is averaging 12.5 points and 15.2 rebounds a game. Last week in a 66-37 victory over International of San Francisco, she had 25 rebounds to go with 13 points.
Tabitha Torres (Corcoran): She should be among the top scorers all year in the Central Section. She had 34 points last week in a game against Liberty of Madera Ranchos, which was the same total for the entire Liberty team in a 52-34 win by Corcoran.
Allison Wong (Mercy, Red Bluff): Sank seven 3-pointers and wound up with 43 points to lead her team past Lower Lake, 71-64.
Eve Zelinger (Castilleja, Palo Alto): Last week in a 63-44 victory over Urban of San Francisco, Zelinger had 30 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. So far in a 7-1 start this season, the 6-foot guard/forward is averaging 20.1 points, 10.1 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 2.1 steals and 2.1 blocks per game.
