1. (1) Poly (Long Beach) 8-0
That ridiculous Jackrabbit defense forced six turnovers with five that were turned directly into touchdowns during a 45-0 win last Friday over Cabrillo of Long Beach. Paul Felder ran back a fumble 35 yards for a score while Corey Waller recovered a fumble in the end zone. The Poly offense was led by Morgan Fennell, who tossed two TD passes to Jordan Johnson, plus another one to Kaelin Clay, which is a good sign since the passing game has struggled at times this season. This week, the Jackrabbits face a tough opponent in 8-0 Compton, which is entering after a 39-13 triumph against Millikan of Long Beach.
2. (2) Centennial (Corona) 8-0
Quarterback Taylor Martinez had the hot hand with 16 completions in 23 attempts for 279 yards and three TDs as the Huskies ran past J.W. North of Riverside, 42-19. His favorite target, as usual, was UCLA-bound Ricky Marvray, who had seven catches for 148 yards and one score. Head coach Matt Logan's team should have its toughest Big 8 League matchup this week against Santiago of Corona. It's at least a game that should be interesting going into the second half. From their strength of schedule argument compared to Long Beach Poly, note that Chaparral of Temecula (which the Huskies beat in their opener) is now up to No. 13 in the state while Mater Dei (which the Huskies beat in their second game) is now up to No. 16. The Monarchs are sure to have a lot of fans in Corona for the upcoming CIFSS Pac-Five playoffs.
3. (3) De La Salle (Concord) 7-1
Two big plays carried the Spartans to a 45-35 win over Monte Vista of Danville last Friday night. The visiting Mustangs entered the contest at 7-0 and were No. 16 in the state, so a close game was certainly a possibility. Alex Taylor's 58-yard interception return for a score and Noah Perio's touchdown run after picking up the ball on a fake field goal attempt were those critical plays. If not for that, then Monte Vista might have been able to end De La Salle's long league win streak, which dates way back to 1989. Blake Wayne led the DLS offense with two touchdown passes to Jackson Bouza. The Spartans close out their East Bay Athletic League schedule with games this week against San Ramon Valley and then the following Friday vs. California of San Ramon. Based on all league games played so far, Monte Vista would appear to be the team's toughest league rival and that one already has now been cleared.
4. (4) Oceanside 8-0
The beat goes on for Oceanside, which beat beat Orange Glen of Escondido, 62-6, in another Valley League game that was a mismatch created by North County Conference principals voting to drop Oceanside from the stronger Avocado League. The San Diego Section's No. 1-ranked team has won 20 consecutive games. The Pirates were leading 48-0 at halftime and Oceanside coach John Carroll let the clock run out at the end of the second quarter rather than take another shot at the end zone. Colorado-bound quarterback Jordan Wynn only played two quarters and threw only 10 passes, completing nine for 170 yards and three touchdowns. The Pirates didn't throw a pass in the second half as they ran the ball between the tackles on nearly every play. Sophomore wide receiver Demario Coleman, a college prospect to keep an eye on, caught three balls for two touchdowns. Oceanside plays the only two Valley League teams that can test the Pirates when they face Valley Center (7-1) and Ramona (7-1) in the next two weeks. Valley Center travels Friday to Oceanside, and the Pirates travel Nov. 14 to Ramona.
5. (5) St. Bonaventure (Ventura) 7-1
Wrapping up their road portion of league play in grand fashion, the Seraphs scored their highest point total of the year as they defeated Santa Barbara, 51-21, in a game played last Thursday. Devon Blackledge led a spread out offensive attack with 117 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries while also scoring on a kickoff return. Isaiah Burton followed Blackledge's kickoff return for a score with a punt return for six points after St. Bonnie stopped the Dons on offense. Patrick Hall saw limited action but still found the end zone twice, once on the ground and once through the air. Head coach Todd Therrien's team will look to make it four wins in a row since losing to No. 1 Poly when it hosts a Dos Pueblos of Goleta squad that has won just two games this season and has lost three straight.
6. (6) Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 8-0
If the Knights keep rolling, there won't be much of a choice to move them up in the rankings ahead of St. Bonaventure and Oceanside. That's no knock against the other two, but as Notre Dame keeps winning the possibility of a CIF Southern Section Pac-Five Division title game against No. 1 Long Beach Poly (with both unbeaten) becomes more likely, although that scenario is far from certain. Head coach Kevin Rooney's team impressed last Friday in a 37-17 win over No. 11 Crespi as red-hot junior QB Ryan Kasdorf connected on 22 of 28 passes for 325 yards and four TDs. Three of Kasdorf's TD strikes went to James Flynn, who caught seven balls overall for 116 yards. It also was the seventh straight game in which the Knights scored at least 30 points. They avenged last season's loss to Crespi and hope to continue playing well this Saturday when they take on Loyola of Los Angeles, which is coming in off a strong 17-6 victory over previous state-ranked Bishop Amat.
7. (8) Oak Grove (San Jose) 8-0
It was another Friday night cruise to victory for the Eagles as they rode Omari Carr to a 42-21 victory over Leigh of San Jose. Surrendering the opening seven points of the game, the Eagles soared back with three straight rushing touchdowns from Carr to take control of the game. Carr would go on to add another touchdown on a 71-yard kickoff return and add another on the ground to finish his night with five touchdowns and 190 yards on 24 carries. Allen Chapman took over for Carr down the stretch and also eclipsed 100 yards rushing while scoring the game's final touchdown. The strength of schedule for Oak Grove, which moves up a spot due to previous No. 7 Los Alamitos losing to Fountain Valley, remains fairly weak but the Eagles are the defending CCS champs on a 20-game win streak and are sure to be tested in the post-season. Oak Grove hosts Piedmont Hills on Friday night in its final league home game before finishing on the road. Piedmont Hills gave up 84 in a recent game to Leland, so what's Oak Grove going to do?
8. (10) Grant (Sacramento) 7-0
The Pacers didn't have the chance to scare an opponent on Halloween as they had a bye. Surely catching Grant's attention was the loss suffered by nearby Granite Bay to Roseville, 35-34, which eliminates the chance of the two schools facing off in the postseason with undefeated records. Before the week off, the Pacers had won their previous four games by a combined 236-15 margin. They will look to continue their two-game shutout streak when they get back on the field for a home game against McClatchy. Granite Bay or Roseville could still prove to be a worthy opponent for Grant in a possible Sac-Joaquin Section Div. II playoff game, but now the Pacers actually may have to play both if Roseville wins out and takes that league's No. 1 playoff berth and Granite Bay then slides down to No. 2.
9. (17) Tesoro (Las Flores) 8-0
Well, there's no doubt now which team should be No. 1 in Orange County and it's Tesoro. With Los Alamitos losing to Fountain Valley, the Titans recorded their first shutout as they dominated Capistrano Valley, 42-0. Preston King got the Titans on the board while the offense was watching on the sidelines as he intercepted a pass and took it 62 yards for the game's first score. Robbie Picazo threw three second quarter touchdown passes to wide receiver Brett Gudim as Tesoro went into the halftime break with a 35-0 lead. Seth Davis scored the lone touchdown of the second half midway through the third quarter on a 17-yard run. Next up, the Titans take on 0-8 Aliso Niguel of Aliso Viejo.
10. (12) Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 8-0
Head coach Bill Redell's team avenged last year's midseason league loss to Oak Park of Agoura Hills in a big way on Friday night as it posted its third straight shutout victory, this time by a 54-0 margin. Malcolm Jones dominated on the ground in the first half for the Lions as he rushed for 120 yards and four touchdowns on just 12 carries while scoring a fifth touchdown on a 23-yard screen pass from Nick Montana. The junior quarterback completed 10 of 17 passes for three scores and 237 yards. Oaks Christian has now won the last three games by a combined 171-0 but should have its hands full
this week when they host all-state RB Cierre Wood and the undefeated Santa Clara Saints.
11. (11) Crespi (Encino) 6-2
Similar to a few other teams this week, the Celts lost to one of the state's very best clubs and are not hurt in this week's ratings. They simply couldn't stop red-hot QB Ryan Kasdorf, as the quarterback for the state's No. 6 ranked team completed his first eleven passes and 22 of 28 in Notre Dame's surprisingly easy 37-17 victory over Crespi. Although the score was somewhat of a shock to Celts' fans, Crespi has been nursing injuries and the loss of two-way standout Miko Island has hurt the team on both sides of the ball. Last season's victory over the Golden Knights' was actually the only time Crespi has won in the last 14 meetings between the two teams so perhaps the outcome of last week's game shouldn't be so surprising. In order for the Celts to once again advance deep in the CIFSS Pac-Five Division playoffs, players are going to have to step up to make up for the lack of depth, starting this week against a Bishop Amat club that was state ranked until last week's 17-6 loss to Loyola of Los Angeles.
12. (18) Gilroy 8-0
The Mustangs jumped a few fences and six spots to boot after a thrilling 34-28 win on the road against Palma at the Salinas Sports Complex. For undisclosed reasons, star quarterback Jamie Jensen didn't start the game. He came in midway through the second quarter with Palma leading 14-0 and proceeded to torch the Chieftains, passing for 434 yards on 26 of 37 passes with three touchdowns. Jensen's favorite target was Dante Fullard, who had 11 catches for 122 yards and two touchdowns. Fullard also rushed for a pair of scores. Still, it was a sack by Brandom Elam of Palma quarterback David Fales at the Gilroy 20-yard line with 1:02 remaining that sealed the victory. Although Gilroy doesn't get as much mention as some other contenders for the Div. I or even Open berth for the North, the Mustangs will move up to No. 4 this week in the CalHiSports.com Div. I north bowl rankings and they control their own destiny in the CCS Open Division Playoffs. Now comes 7-1 North Salinas Salinas in another trip to the Sports Complex and the Vikings would like nothing better than to knock the Mustangs right out of the picture.
13. (24) Chaparral (Temecula) 7-1
The Pumas made a statement in a televised contest last week that not only jumped them up eleven spots but also gave them sole possession of first place in the Southwestern League. Chap was in a tight contest with Temescal Canyon of Lake Elsinore until Jonathan Diaz, who is also the team's top offensive weapon, returned an interception for a touchdown that ignited the engine all the way to a 56-14 victory. After Diaz's interception return, the Pumas reeled off five consecutive touchdowns before halftime. Diaz also scored on a 74-yard on he first play from scrimmage and finished the game with four scores in all. Chap has now won seven consecutive games since a season-opening loss to No. 2 Centennial. Chaparral feels quite confident they have improved overall since that game but the Huskies probably feel the same way. Before they can start salivating at the mouth for a rematch in the CIFSS Inland Division playoffs, the Pumas need to remain focused this week against 0-8 Temecula Valley.
14. (16) Monte Vista (Danville) 7-1
In a strange twist of fate, the Mustangs benefit from five teams above them losing to move up, despite themselves losing 45-35 to De La Salle. The big difference is Coach Craig Bergman's squad went for over 400 yards of total offense against the state's No. 3 team and scored more points against the Spartans than any school since Midwest powerhouse Elder of Cincinnati in September of 2006. Brett Nottingham completed 28 of 46 passes for 311 yards and four touchdowns, but he was also intercepted twice, and Tom Hemmingsen caught 10 balls for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Even though De La Salle, Oak Grove, Grant and Gilroy are ranked ahead of the Mustangs, the showing against De La Salle reinforces what many Northern California football experts are saying; that Monte Vista may be the second best team in Northern California. Amador Valley of Pleasanton comes to town this Friday night.
15. (19) Bellarmine (San Jose) 7-1
The Bells continue their climb back up the rankings ladder, once again on the strength of Stanford-bound multi-talent Usua Amanam. In a 34-10 bell-tolling victory over cross-town West Catholic Athletic League rival Mitty, the 5-foot-9, 175-pound tailback totaled 257 all-purpose yards and scored four touchdowns in four different ways: a 37-yard run, a 62-yard punt return, a 20-yard pass and a 90-yard interception return. The win keeps the Bells tied at 4-1 for first place in the league with Serra of San Mateo and surprising Sacred Heart Cathedral of San Francisco, a 28-24 upset winner on the road over previous No. 20 Valley Christian of San Jose.
16. (nr) Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 6-2
The Monarchs jump back into the Top 25 not only because of their 57-28 victory over Santa Margarita, but also since they are currently sitting on top of the Trinity League, arguably the toughest and deepest in the state. Despite the lopsided final score, Santa Margarita refused to buckle until Mater Dei turned a tenuous 28-21 halftime lead into a 57-21 advantage with a 29-point run started by Christian Maldonado's 30-yard TD off an interception return. Jaron Hytche and Matt Barkley had almost identical results in vastly different ways. Hytche rushed for 227 yards and four touchdowns while Barkley passed for 228 yards and two touchdowns. Holding on to its ranking will be a challenge as Mater Dei plays No. 22 St. John Bosco of Bellflower Friday night at Santa Ana Stadium.
17. (21) Cardinal Newman (Santa Rosa) 8-0
Coach Paul Cronin showed why he's considered one of the top young coaches in Northern California, showcasing his own talents in an easy victory against what was supposed to be his team's toughest North Bay League opponent. The knock on Newman this year is lack of size up front on defense. What Cronin showed against the Ranch is the same thing he's done all season; design a defensive game plan to utilize his linebackers and outside cover players to the maximum. The 42-7 road victory over Rancho Cotate wasn't really as close as the score because Newman missed a couple of scoring opportunities, and on defense literally took the Ranch out of its power running game. Joe Ferguson scored the team's first TD on a 30-yard screen pass and also scored on a 93-yard kickoff return and a 7-yard run. He also had 12 tackles from his linebacker position with two for losses. Jeff Badger rushed for 90 yards and one TD and also had a 32-yard interception return for a score. Newman now faces pass-happy 7-1 Ukiah at home.
18. (23) Junipero Serra (San Mateo) 5-3
The best 5-3 team in the state went from not rated to this position in two weeks, after following up the big 31-23 road win at Bellarmine with a ho-hum 28-13 home victory over St. Ignatius of San Francisco. The rain-soaked game was dominated by the Padres running game. Quarterback Cody Jackson ran for three touchdowns and 98 yards and Jared Braun rushed for 107 yards and one score. Next up is a 1-6-1 San Francisco Riordan team that hasn't scored in over two games and is coming off a 0-0 tie in the slosh with St. Francis of Mountain View. With Serra's power running attack, this game could get ugly.
19. (nr) Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 8-0
The San Diego Section's No. 2-ranked team cracks the top 25 following its rout of a league foe as the Dons defeated Patrick Henry of San Diego, 66-10. Senior running back Tyler Gaffney carried 12 times for 210 yards and scored four touchdowns on runs of 24, 16, 33 and 80 yards. All four touchdowns came in the first half. Backup running back Alan Conkin took over in the second half and finished with eight carries for 95 yards. Quarterback Parker Hipp, a wide receiver last year, continued his strong leadership of the offense. He completed 9 of 15 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. Cathedral's final touchdown came when Chris Cotter recovered a fumble in the end zone. Cathedral faces its biggest rival when the Dons meet Catholic school rival St. Augustine Friday at Southwestern College. St. Augustine is 5-3, but it's one of the games when you throw out the records.
20. (nr) Servite (Anaheim) 5-3
Since the Friars' offense wasn't lighting up the scoreboard, coach Troy Thomas challenged his defense and it held usually prolific-scoring and state-ranked Orange Lutheran to 10 points in a 14-10 Trinity League victory. "We won on defense...we had to, Thomas told The Orange County Register. Not completely. Greg Portis rushed for 150 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown, but in the end keeping Lutheran out of the end zone after the Lancers drove deep inside the Friars territory twice in the fourth quarter, proved to be the difference. Similar to No. 18 Serra, Servite has lost some tough contests against No. 6 Notre Dame, No. 11 Crespi, and No. 16 Mater Dei by just one point. They also own wins over No. 25 Edison and Clovis West in addition to last week's win over the Lancers. Next up for the Friars is JSerra of San Juan Capistrano.
21. (15) Lutheran (Orange) 6-2
Just when Lutheran convinced the pollsters they they deserved to be considered one of the serious contenders for the CIFSS Pac-Five title behind Long Beach Poly, up stepped Servite of Anaheim. A 14-10 setback should not have come as a big surprise because the Friars have now beaten the Lancers three straight years, but it was a tough loss nonetheless and drops the Lancers six spots. Lutheran took a 10-7 lead into the third quarter on Kyle Dravis' 40-yard scoring run and amassed more than 300 yards in total offense, but two trips inside the Servite 30 in the fourth quarter produced zero points. Lutheran has a Thursday game this week against Santa Margarita at Brea Olinda High and then close out the season against state-ranked Mater Dei of Santa Ana.
22. (22) St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 7-1
The Keith Price show continued last week during a 33-6 Trinity League victory over JSerra of San Juan Capistrano. He completed 15 of 23 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns and added 53 yards on the ground on nine attempts. Price has now passed for 1,856 yards and accounted for 30 touchdowns on the season. The win over JSerra was expected but with Orange Lutheran losing to Servite of Anaheim, the Braves don't move anywhere in the ratings. Price and company close out the season with games against state-ranked squads Mater Dei of Santa Ana and Servite, with this week's game against the Monarchs being especially important to Bosco's chances at winning the league crown, not to mention Price's Mr. Football chances.
23. (nr) A.B. Miller (Fontana) 8-0
Talk about teams going in different directions. The last two weeks, Miller had been surging while Redlands East Valley had struggled, barely pulling out wins. The result of their game was predictably close, but certainly not easy to call, as Miller kept its perfect record intact with an 18-15 victory to jump into this week's top 25 while knocking REV out. The key play in the game came in the fourth quarter and Miller clinging to a 12-7 lead. The fortunes of the game appeared to turn when REV's Jerel Kyles' intercepted a Juan Flores pass on the REV 2-yard line. Kyles, however, fumbled and alert WR Jonathon Gayles recovered, the Rebels scoring three plays later on Flores' 5-yard run. The emotional lift carried Miller all the way to the final gun after REV's onside kick attempt failed. Miller will play 5-3 Eisenhower of Rialto Friday in hopes of closing in on the Citrus Belt League title.
24. (7) Los Alamitos 7-1
In the two Los Al games we caught in person, the Griffins were saw a club that was definitely a better team than the past two seasons, but they had trouble finishing off two opponents (Edison, La Habra) that basically gave away the game away. Not being able to put away a team finally caught up with Los Al as Sunset League foe Fountain Valley upset the Griffins in overtime, 21-14. Los Al kicker Zach Kadletz had a chance to win the game in regulation, but his 31-yard field goal attempt with seven seconds remaining sailed wide right. Los Al scored its two touchdowns on spectacular receptions by Paul Richardson, who is definitely one of the state's best underclass wide outs. There is currently a four-way tie for first place in the Sunset League, and Los Al will look to keep pace with Esperanza of Anaheim, one of the four clubs currently 2-1 in the tough loop.
25. (25) Edison (Huntington Beach) 6-2
The Chargers, and quarterback Matt Viles in particular, rebounded nicely from last week's disappointing loss to Los Alamitos with a 55-7 win over Marina of Huntington Beach. Viles completed 13 of 17 pass attempts for 266 yards, including scoring strikes of 18 and 70 yards to Michael Rivera and a 51-yarder to sophomore Davion Orphey. Rivera pulled in six passes for 176 yards and three TDs as the Chargers jumped out to a 35-0 lead at intermission. Wade Houston tagged on 113 yards on the ground and Orphey amassed 112 yards rushing, scoring twice on the ground to give him three TDs in all. Fountain Valley awaits the Chargers Friday night at Orange Coast College and Edison would love to soundly beat the team that just knocked off Los Alamitos and break the logjam at the top of the Sunset League standings.
