New Overall Top 25 State Football Rankings

October 27, 2009 3:04 AM

There are no changes for the first 15 teams. Most are still winning by routs, including two that scored 85 points. Vista Murrieta and Amador Valley are this week's newcomers with Buchanan getting a three-spot bump. Click inside to check out write-ups and analysis of all 25 teams.

(After games of Saturday, Oct. 24)
(Previous ranking in parentheses)

1.  (1)  Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 7-0
The big news for the Lions last week came away from the field when the CIF Southern Section decreed that both themselves and St. Bonaventure of Ventura would be moving to the big-school Marmonte League. That's not good news for the public schools in the Marmonte, but the endless series of blowouts involving Oaks Christian and St. Bonaventure in small-school leagues was bound to end somehow, someway. On the field, head coach Bill Redell's team blew out Carpinteria, 43-0. Malcolm Jones rambled for 135 yards on 11 carries and scored twice while Nick Montana tossed three TD passes. The Lions' next game will be Friday at home against Oak Park of Agoura Hills.

2.  (2)  Grant (Sacramento) 8-0
Even though the Pacers have now outscored their opponents, 363-7, so far this season, they would still have to pour it on over their last two regular season games to approach the state record for highest point differential for a regular season. That record is 536 points for a 646-120 advantage for Bloomington in 1994. Still, no matter the weakness of the competition (other than Bellevue, Wash.), the Pacers shutting out seven of eight foes is impressive. The latest laugher was 85-0 last Friday over Kennedy of Sacramento. It was 71-0 at halftime and standout Devontae Butler was already taking it easy on the sidelines in the second quarter with 11 carries for 246 yards and five touchdowns. Kennedy ended with negative yardage on offense trying to do anything against the Pacers' defense. This week, Grant has a bye and then on Nov. 7 meets McClatchy of Sacramento.

3.  (3)  Crenshaw (Los Angeles) 7-0
Crenshaw's smackdowns are getting to be just as ridiculous as Grant's. After a 68-0 win to open Coliseum League play against Manual Arts of Los Angeles, the Cougars rolled up a 62-0 score in their game last Friday against Fremont. Fullback-linebacker Hayes Pullard had 151 yards and two touchdowns on just three carries while Geoffrey Norwood had 105 yards and one score on just four attempts. The score was 48-0 at halftime before head coach Robert Garrett called off the dogs. Crenshaw should keep it rolling this Friday vs. Locke and probably won't get much of a test for the rest of the regular season other than against Dorsey.

4.  (4)  Oceanside 7-0
The Pirates plundered Mt. Carmel of San Diego for 265 rushing yards and got 179 passing yards and three TDs from Quentis Clark in posting an easy 42-7 victory. Jake Fely didn't rush for many of those yards but did score twice. Head coach John Carroll's team should continue to rank No. 1 in the CIF Div. I South bowl game rankings, but many know that's a precarious position with undefeated CIF Southern Section Pac-Five Division teams like Edison of Huntington Beach and Mission Viejo in the mix. Oceanside's own playoff division is just not up to that level, although the team has proven it can play with anybody. It'll just be interesting to see how it all plays out. This week, the Pirates will host Orange Glen of Escondido.

5.  (5)  Edison (Huntington Beach) 7-0

After a 34-10 victory over Esperanza of Anaheim that begun action for the Chargers in the rugged Sunset League, they looked dominant once against in a 34-6 triumph against Newport Harbor of Newport Beach. Despite giving up an early score, Edison rang off 34 straight points for an easy win. Matt Viles was again pin-point to lead the offense as he completed 27 of 40 passes for 350 yards and three TDs. Davion Orphey had six catches for 108 yards while Wade Houston chipped in with 10 rushes for 86 yards plus six catches for 44 yards and one TD. The Chargers go up against 6-1 Los Alamitos in this week's game. The Griffins got up to as high as No. 20 in these rankings two weeks ago before suffering a loss to Newport Harbor.

6.  (6)  Lakewood 7-1

The Lancers figured last week's game with Long Beach Jordan was going to be a big test when their season schedule came out, but it turned out to be a ho-hum 25-0 victory. J-Town saw its season change dramatically when Moore League Player of the Year Johnny Timu was lost to injury in week two. Without him, Jordan was unable to muster any offense against a stingy Lakewood defense led by Justin Utupo and Todd Barr. Elite 11 quarterback Jesse Scroggins was the difference-maker when Lakewood had the ball, passing for 192 yards and accounting for four touchdowns. Lakewood will close the regular season with perhaps its two toughest league opponents. First up is 6-2 Millikan of Long Beach, which is coming off a dramatic 35-34 double overtime victory over Long Beach Poly. After a bye week, Lakewood will then take on Long Beach Wilson, the other team that is still unbeaten in Moore League play.

7.  (7)  De La Salle (Concord) 5-2
Just like in years past, De La Salle is rounding into shape, destroying Granada of Livermore last Friday, a team that has made some noise in the East Bay Athletic League. An early season 14-7 victory over San Mateo Serra was played by a different Spartans' team than the one lining up for Coach Bob Ladouceur at this stage of the season. Track star turned explosive running back Terron Ward is over early season nagging injuries and an offensive and defensive line that is notoriously slow to develop has been dishing out the licks in the EBAL after taking some lumps from a couple of the nation's top teams. In the 56-14 victory over Granada, the Spartan defense came up with three interceptions and Ward and fellow running back Tyler Anderson each eclipsed 100 yards, as De La Salle built a 56-0 halftime lead. On tap on the scheduled this week is Livermore, which has been struggling this season.

8.  (8)  St. Mary's (Stockton) 7-0
If you're a fan of defense, the Rams game against Stagg of Stockton was a nightmare for you to watch as the two teams lit up the scoreboard for 125 points. Like Grant, St. Mary's scored a whopping 85 points, but the Delta Kings did some scoring as well in a 85-40 scorefest. Marcus McDade totaled 257 yards as he passed for five scores and ran one in himself from 21 yards out. Louie Lechich caught five passes for 65 yards and three touchdowns while Maurice Howze ran for 175 yards and two scores before finding a spot on the sideline for Jalen Ward, who also rushed for two scores. For five straight weeks, the Rams have scored more points than they did the week before but this week that should come to an end at home against McNair as the Eagles pose little threat of keeping the game close or putting enough points on the board to keep the Rams' stars from finding a spot on the sideline well before halftime.

9.  (9)  Mission Viejo 7-0

Three different players threw TD passes as the Diablos overwhelmed Tesoro of Rancho Santa Margarita, 60-14, to completely reverse the outcome of their game with the Titans a year ago. Dallin McEwen hit on 10 of 17 passes for 274 yards and four TDs with the other two coming from Tre Madden and Alex Bridgford. Joey Branker was the squad's leading receiver with five grabs for 133 yards and two scores. Maurice Green added two more TD catches while Exavier Edwards scored twice on the ground. While Tesoro of last year is down quite a bit, head coach Bob Johnson and his staff knows there a different South Coast League threat looming this season over at Dana Hills of Dana Pointe, which is 6-1 and has lost only to No. 5 Edison. That game is still two weeks out, though. Coming up this week is a game on Friday against Aliso Niguel of Aliso Viejo.

10.  (10)  Servite (Anaheim) 6-1

Similar to Charlie Weiss at the University of Notre Dame, who will eventually be judged by how many wins and losses he attains against USC, Servite coach Troy Thomas could have a sterling overall record, but it he does not defeat Mater Dei of Santa Ana, Servite fans and alumni would eventually call for his head. Thomas has fared quite well as the Friars' head coach, but he finally got the monkey off his back with a 30-20 victory over the Monarchs in front of a sold-out crowd at Santa Ana Stadium. Leading the way in Servite's first victory over the Monarchs since 1988 was senior QB Cody Fajardo, who accounted for 291 yards and three touchdowns in Friday's big win. Fajardo completed 10 of 12 passes and threw two touchdowns while adding 141 yards and a touchdown on the ground. It was a historic victory, but no team has ever gone unbeaten in the Trinity League. The Friars have to stay focused and avoid a letdown in their quest for a favorable seed in the CIF Southern Section Pac-Five Division playoffs. Next up is 3-4 Santa Margarita.

11.  (11)  Moorpark 7-0
The Musketeers recorded their first shutout of the season over a week ago and now have two shutouts in a row as they defeated Royal of Simi Valley, 51-0 ,in what was also their highest scoring game of the year. Behind the running of Austin Edmonson, who is well on his way to a third straight 1,000 yard rushing season, Moorpark also has now won 15 straight regular season games. The team will play its final home game of the regular season this week against Thousand Oaks, which has won three straight. Unbeaten Westlake of Westlake Village also is looming in the Marmonte League standings.

12.  (12)  Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 6-1
The Knights were held to just 21 points against Chaminade of West Hills, but it was still more than enough to pick up their fifth straight victory as the defense held the opposition to a season-low three points in a 21-3 victory. Kenny Boggs led the offense, which was averaging over 36 points per game, with 117 yards rushing on 15 carries and Jacob Smith rushed for 82 yards and scored both of their touchdowns. While the offense struggled, the defense shined as they allowed just 218 yards of total offense without giving up a play longer than 18 yards. Notre Dame will once again be at home this week as it welcomes the Celts from Crespi High of Encino.

13.  (13)  Serra (Gardena) 7-0
Although the Cavs were unable to move up in this week's top 25, their 34-6 victory over Harvard-Westlake of North Hollywood was quite impressive considering the Wolverines had earlier beaten Alemany of Mission Hills and lost by only a touchdown to Chaminade of West Hills. There was no doubt about this one as Serra allowed only a token touchdown with less than a minute remaining and with back-ups in the game. Quarterback Connor Preston led the way offensively by completing 21 of 28 passes for 293 yards and a touchdown. Bene Benwikere also gave Serra a big lift by coming up with two interceptions, including one he returned 60 yards for a touchdown. Up next for Serra is 1-6 St. Bernard of Playa del Rey and it might be another game where the reserves will see action after halftime.

14.  (14)  Bishop Amat (La Puente) 7-0

Ever since an overtime victory over then state No. 3 St. Bonaventure at the beginning of October, the Lancers have been rolling. Last Friday they defeated Alemany of Mission Hills, a previously state-ranked club and the best team they've played since the Seraphs. In the 36-14 victory, Amat fell behind early, but later made its move by scoring three straight touchdowns and forcing a safety. The Amat defense also did a great job of limiting Alemany standout Malcolm Marable to 27 yards on 10 carries. Amat's Jay Anderson, meanwhile, went for 153 yards and three touchdowns on 31 carries. Amat plays in the four-team Serra League and getting though the next three games unscathed would be quite an accomplishment. First up in the Serra is 3-4 Loyola of Los Angeles.

15.  (15)  Del Oro (Loomis) 7-0

Showing no signs of a letdown after last week's overtime thriller against Granite Bay, the Golden Eagles ended the home portion of their regular season schedule with a 49-0 win over Roseville. Max Magleby connected with Adrian Williams for three first-half scores while Bryce Pratt also provided three first-half scores as the Golden Eagles soared to a 42-0 halftime lead. Magleby finished with 201 passing yards and the three scores while Pratt rushed for 113 yards on 18 carries. Williams finished with four catches for 98 yards and the three scores while Ibrahim Abukhdair scored the final touchdown in the fourth quarter while rushing for 39 yards on 10 carries. Coach Casey Taylor's team will end the regular season with three straight road games, starting this week in Roseville against Woodcreek.

16.  (17)  St. Bonaventure (Ventura) 6-1
Buena of Ventura put up a fight in the first half against the Seraphs, but it was too much Devon Blackledge in the second half as St. Bonnie wound up with a 44-27 win over the Bulldogs. Blackledge had one of his finest games, rushing for 309 yards on 29 carries with two TDs and adding 92 yards and another score on three pass receptions. QB Logan Meyer connected on an 80-yard pass for a TD to Blackledge and finished 10 of 15 for 167 yards. The Seraphs have likely cleared their only threat in the Channel League and this week play Ventura at Larrabee Stadium, which is the home field for both schools.

17.  (18)  Redlands East Valley (Redlands) 7-0

The Wildcats appear to be getting the easy teams in the early portion of their Citrus Belt League schedule. Against Rialto last Friday, REV raced out to a 42-0 lead at halftime and finished with a 49-6 victory. QB Tyler Shreve was nearly flawless as he was 13 of 16 for 214 yards and four TDs. Balance in the offense was provided by RB A.J. Fernandez, who carried 13 times for 175 yards and caught two passes for 89 more. This week, head coach Kurt Bruich's bunch plays another of the CBL lower echelon squads, Carter of Rialto. The final two teams on the regular season schedule, especially 6-1 Redlands on Nov. 13, should be stronger tests.

18.  (19)  La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad) 7-0

It's rematch week for the Mavericks as they play Friday at 5-1-1 Escondido, which is the same team they topped 45-28 to win last year's San Diego Section Div. I title at Qualcomm Stadium. To get warmed up, LCC dumped San Pasqual of Escondido, 38-12, and has now won 16 straight games. It was a varied collection of standouts on the night as Garrett Krstich went 10 of 12 on passing, Kenny Stills landed seven receptions for 104 yards and two TDs and all-state kicking candidate Robert Zalud booted a 52-yard field goal.

19.  (22)  Buchanan (Clovis) 7-0
The Central Section's top ranked team and host Bears earned a three-spot bump and remained unbeaten after roughing up Clovis West of Fresno in a 38-14 victory. Quarterback Lance Orender passed for four touchdowns with three going to Jacob East. The hosts led 14-0 but Clovis West closed to 17-14 at the half, before the tough Buchanan defense forced a fumble that Orender and East turned into a score, sealing the deal. Orender finished 17 of 25 for 353 yards passing and four TDs and also rushed for 40 yards. East had four catches for 156 yards and after going double-digits in receiving in all but one game this year, has 978 yards and 11 TDs. Next up is a Tri-River Athletic Conference road game across town at Clovis.

20.  (21)  Norco 6-1
The Cougars survived a spirited upset bid by league rival Santiago of Corona, coming from behind to grab a 44-39 win. The Sharks scored 18 straight points during one stretch of the second half and led 39-29 with eight minutes left. Norco wasn't done, though, and rallied with two scores in the final five minutes by running back Deantre Lewis. To get Lewis in position for his game-winning score required a 20-yard pass on fourth-down and 20 that connected between Taylor Viloria and Lewis. For the night, Lewis had 273 yards rushing and scored four TDs. Up next this week for Norco is a matchup on Thursday vs. M.L. King of Riverside.

21.  (23)  Valencia 7-0
It's generally the easy game of the year in the Foothill League for the usual powers when they play newer school Golden Valley of Santa Clarita. That was the case last Friday when Valencia blanked Golden Valley, 49-0. It was the team's first shutout of the season and featured Steven Manfro, who carried 18 times for 150 yards and scored five times. One of his TDs came on a pass reception, which was one of three he had for 103 additional yards. QB Alex Bishop also had a strong outing by going 10 of 13 for 242 yards and two TDs. The Vikings definitely won't have it that easy on Friday of this week when they meet perennial power Hart of Newhall.

22.  (24)  Centennial (Corona) 6-1
While league rival Norco went up one spot this week, the Huskies went up two. With the Mater Dei loss seemingly an ancient memory, coach Matt Logan's team rolled over J.W. North of Riverside, 52-20, for its fifth straight win. The game against Norco takes place in two weeks, but up first will be this week's game on Friday vs. that same Santiago of Corona team that nearly upset the Cougars. Against J.W. North, Centennial's leading players included Anthony Goodman with two interceptions, Denzel Hawkins with 10 carries for 117 yards and one TD and Dion Bass with 11 carries for 91 yards and three TDs.

23. (NR) Vista Murrieta (Murrieta) 7-0

It seems to be about this time of the year when the Broncos work their way into the top 25. They've done it again and did so after an impressive 32-13 win last Friday over Chaparral of Temecula. Being unbeaten is one thing, but beating Chaparral by a wider margin than either No. 10 Servite or No. 22 Corona Centennial shows that head coach Coley Candaele has built another strong team. The win over the Pumas was keyed by Benjamin Madison's two fourth quarter rushing TDs. Derrick Brown also shined with 17 carries for 98 yards and one TD plus going 11 of 18 for 92 yards through the air.

24. (NR) Amador Valley (Pleasanton) 6-1
After losing its second spot in the Top 25 earlier this season, the Bay Area reclaims it courtesy of the Dons. who came up with their third straight big East Bay Athletic League win after a 35-24 defeat of a very good San Ramon California team. Amador Valley was clinging to a 28-24 lead after quarterback Kean Stancil scored on a 15-yard touchdown run with 2:33 left in the fourth quarter. California was then on a last-ditch drive before Matt Banahan intercepted a pass and raced 52 yards for a touchdown that turned out the lights on the visiting Grizzlies. The good news is this is the first appearance in the state rankings for as long as anyone can remember for a team whose only loss is 32-21 to De La Salle in a game it led 21-10 at the half. The bad news is to stay up with the big boys, Coach Rick Sira's charges will need to take care of business on the road at Danville San Ramon Valley this week in the East Bay Athletic League, where, with the closeness of talent level, nothing has been for certain this year, other than De La Salle's superiority.

25. (25) Bullard (Fresno) 7-0
The No. 2 team from the Central Section both in these rankings and those of the Fresno Bee remained unbeaten and matched strides with Buchanan after getting three rushing touchdowns from Jordan Jones to pull out a 52-42 victory at Reedley in a County-Metro Athletic Conference game that came down to the final minute. Although two teams dropped out of the rankings this week, the closeness of the win against Reedley didn't allow the Knights to move up. Bullard led 21-7 but Reedley just wouldn't go away, scoring with 1:09 to go before Bullard recovered a second onside kick and ran out the clock after a first onside kick moments earlier resulted in a Reedley touchdown. Next up is a road game at Sanger, which is still probably pumped after a home upset win over Fresno Edison.

Dropped Out: Previous No. 16 Rancho Cucamonga, No. 20 Granite Bay.

On the Bubble:
Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) 6-0-1, Bellarmine (San Jose) 5-1-1, Berkeley 7-0, Citrus Hill (Perris) 7-0, Dana Hills (Dana Point) 6-1, Fountain Valley 7-0, Granite Bay 5-2, Los Gatos 6-1, Mission Bay (San Diego) 7-0, Oakdale 7-0, Rocklin 7-0, St. Francis (Mountain View) 6-1, Tulare 7-0, Westlake (Westlake Village) 7-0.
