Who's Hot: Mission Bay (San Diego)
We obviously gave some love to Bucs' standout Dillon Baxter as the State Boys Athlete of the Week, but the team is sizzling right now as well. Mission Bay impressed on Friday in a 49-27 win over Point Loma, which was coming off a 22-12 loss to state-ranked Granite Bay, and upped its record to 6-0. Baxter had three touchdowns passing and two more rushing, but was not the only individual who shined. Teammate Ray Herring caught both TD passes and also reached the end zone on a 91-yard fumble return. Making the Bucs look even better is that the team they beat last week, Lincoln, is that same team that snapped Cathedral Catholic's win streak on Friday with a 22-21 win. Cathedral Catholic, last year's CIF Div. II state champs, had a 26-game winning streak, which was the second-longest current win streak in the state. Mission Bay topped Lincoln, 41-34.
Who's Not: The L.A. City Section Div. II playoff structure
On the field, the top teams in Div. II are actually red-hot, but it's the fact they won't compete in the Div. I playoffs against the likes of state No. 3 Crenshaw, Carson, Taft of Woodland Hills or Narbonne of Harbor City that is a bummer. In its opener, El Camino of Woodland Hills turned heads with its 33-28 victory over CIF Southern Section school Hart of Newhall. ECR has proved that win is no fluke, as it opened West Valley League play on Friday night with a 47-24 victory over traditional Div. I power Birmingham of Lake Balboa. The Patriots don't have standout RB Trajuan Briggs healthy, but against the Conquistadores it might not have mattered as three-year standout ECR back Rashon Harper scored six touchdowns and proved he's one of the city's best. ECR could challenge Taft for the league title with its likely competition for the Div. II title coming from Arleta, which has now won 20 consecutive games on the field. Veteran coach Jeff Engilman had to forfeit his team's season-opening 43-14 victory over L.A. Marshall, but the Mustangs improved their on-field record to 6-0 in Friday night with a 62-0 victory over North Hollywood. We've have long stated that the city's various leagues, not individual teams, should be placed accordingly in the correct division, either at the beginning of the season or before the start of league play. Would Arleta or El Camino Real beat The Shaw? Probably not, but upsets can happen. Besides, both are one of the 16 best teams in the section and it will not bode well if ECR wins the West Valley League, a traditional Div. I/4A league.
