Martin Alvarez (Cupertino): The Pioneers' senior RB/LB has put two solid weeks together, both victories. Two weeks ago in a 28-12 victory over San Jose Del Mar he rushed for 182 yards, and had 13 tackles on defense. He also recovered a fumble and forced another. Last week in a 30-6 win against Overfelt of San Jose, he had 206 yards rushing and a TD, and he recorded 14 tackles while once again recovering and forcing a fumble.
John Andrus (Palma, Salinas): Was the defensive linchpin in the Chieftains 17-7 victory over visiting Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa, accounting for three of the seven sacks the hosts recorded.
Mikey Benabides (North Salinas, Salinas): He capped off a huge night for the Vikings by scoring the game-winning touchdown with 31 seconds left in a 48-41 victory over Seaside. Benabides finished with 304 yards rushing and five touchdowns in the contest.
Deion Bernard (Glenn, Norwalk): Rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown, caught a touchdown pass and returned a punt for six in a 55-14 victory over La Quinta.
Avondre Bollar (Thousand Oaks): Completed 13 of 19 passes for 307 yards and four touchdowns during a 49-28 victory over Canyon of Canyon Country. Bollar added a score on the ground as T.O. got off the snide with its first victory of the season. In a losing effort, Canyon sophomore Jonathan Jerozal threw for 336 yards and three touchdown passes, all to Shane Habberstad.
Dionza Bradford (Serrano, Phelan): The UNLV-recruit finished with 200 yards rushing on just 11 carries and scored three touchdowns -- each touchdown was for more than 40 yards – in Serrano's 35-0 win against Highland of Palmdale.
Joey Branker (Mission Viejo): Just looking at his number of pass receptions, four, few would be impressed. But since those four went for a whopping 213 yards, including TDs of 73 and 56 yards, Branker was impressive in a 41-17 win over Vista.
Aaron Cantu (Schurr, Montebello): One of the records that's kept in the ESPN RISE CalHiSports.com Record Book & Almanac is perfect passing performances in a game with at least 10 completions. Cantu did just enough to get himself a permanent spot as he completed all 10 of his passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns in a 42-0 win over Wilson of Hacienda Heights.
Ronnie Clark (West Torrance): Talk about putting in a full day's work, Clark was all over the place in the Warriors' 44-6 non-league victory over Bishop Montgomery of Torrance. Clark passed for 132 yards and two touchdowns, added another score on the ground and capped off his performance with two punt returns for scores in the second half. Clark was upset he didn't score on a long punt return in the first half, but he atoned for that in a big way.
Keenan Coogler (Berkeley): With CalHisports.com roaming the sidelines, the senior LB/RB recorded double-digit tackles for the third time this season, recording 12 in an 18-16 home victory over Pittsburg.
Dorian Crawford (Scripps Ranch, San Diego): Future opponents will be sure to find Crawford after he blocked a pair of field goals and an extra point in addition to causing a fumble and collecting an interception in a 24-13 victory over Pt. Loma of San Diego.
Jackson Cummings (Rocklin): In a 62-35 shootout win over Las Lomas of Walnut Creek, this three-year standout provided the 3-0 Thunder with some big time offense as he reached the end zone five times and rushed for 196 yards.
K.J. Cusack (St. Joseph, Santa Maria): His carries were limited in the Los Padres League opener last Friday, but that was because Cusack couldn't be stopped. He ran for an 85-yard touchdown on the second play of the game as the Knights went on to defeat Cabrillo of Lompoc, 45-0. Cusack also scored on a 46-yard run on the next possession and then early in the second quarter scored from 38 yards out, finishing with 232 yards on just seven carries.
Jeremy Darr (El Dorado, Placerville): Darr averaged over 10 yards per carry in a 41-14 win over Golden Sierra of Garden Valley as he rushed for 230 yards on 21 carries and scored three touchdowns.
Blake Downey (Marywood, Palm Valley): Amassed 452 yards, but that wasn't quite enough in a 44-39 loss to Calvary Christian of Vista. Downey threw for 262 yards and 4 TDs and ran for 190 more and a fifth score.
DJ Egger (Point Arena): This 5-10 senior can do a little bit of everything. In a 24-14 victory at home on the coast against Laytonville, Egger was 2-of-3 passing with one touchdown, he rushed 14 times for 130 yards and another TD, and on defense he had 11 tackles and a 43-yard pass interception. For good measure he had a 37-yard punt. He also returns punts, but he didn't have one in the victory, but Egger did return kickoffs, and had one for 37 yards.
Kevin Ervin (Poly, Sun Valley): Junior running back shattered a school record when he rushed for a whopping 409 yards in a 58-27 victory over Granada Hills. In the Parrots' double wing offense, Ervin toted the rock 20 times and scored six touchdowns to break the single-game rushing mark of 328 yards previously set in 1990 by Jermaine Pledger. Ervin's touchdown runs included a 85 and 86-yarder and so far this season he's rushed for 727 yards in only 49 carries. According to our own L.A. City Section records, Ervin's performance is the third best in section history, surpassed only by the 417-yard performance of L A. Garfield's Ricky Solario in 1982 against L.A. Lincoln and the 475-yard performance of former UTEP Miner and Lincoln standout Sherman Austin against Venice in 1997.
Sateki Finau (Rancho Cucamonga): Charter Oak took a 14-0 lead over Rancho Cucamonga in a battle of state-ranked clubs, but Finau helped them storm back. In the first half alone, the two-way threat scored on a two-yard run, a 19-yard reception and a 68-yard blocked field goal. It was 14-7 and Charter Oak was looking to take a 10-point lead when Finau blocked the field goal so to say it was a turning-point would be an understatement. In the first half alone, Finau intercepted a pass, recovered a teammate's fumble and added a sack.
Ayele Forde (Silverado, Victorville): Forde averaged almost 20 yards a carry as he rushed for 252 yards on 13 totes, scoring four times (18, 56, 51, 66) in a 46-29 win over Palm Desert.
Mike Frank (Rancho Alamitos, Garden Grove): Frank took to the air successfully in a 43-21 win over Cerritos, completing 24 of 43 for 345 yards and five TDs.
Dillan Freiberg (Newport Harbor, Newport Beach): Ran his consecutive extra point streak to 68 in a 37-7 win over Corona del Mar of Newport Beach. That is fifth on the all-time state list according to the CalHiSports.com State Record Book and Almanac. Freiberg's next one will tie him with Manhattan Beach Mira Costa's Joe Houston (2002-04) at No. 4, but he still has a way to go to get to the state record of 115 held by Roman Ferreira from Cathedral Catholic of San Diego (2007-2008). Freiberg also has made five straight field goal attempts.
Colin Gault (River Valley, Yuba City): He was a part of four turnovers that the Falcons forced against Rio Americano of Sacramento, as Gault recovered a fumble and intercepted three passes in a 26-13 win. Gault returned one of the interceptions 84 yards for a score.
Mitch Glasmann (Chaparral, Temecula): Glasmann, one of the IE's top returning quarterbacks, cranked it up against Valley View of Moreno Valley in a 56-13 win. He completed 13 of 18 for 325 yards and five TDs (64, 61, 66, 9 and 46 yards).
Dano Graves & Tyler Trosin (Folsom): Graves was nearly perfect passing the ball in the Bulldogs' 69-26 win over Sacramento as he was 16 of 19 passing for 233 yards and six touchdowns. He also ran for a 52-yard score. Trosin caught three of the six touchdown passes from Graves and he added another score on a 85-yard kickoff return.
Joe Guice (Terra Linda, San Rafael): Senior defensive back had a career day, acting like a Whirling Dervish against Elsie Allen of Santa Rosa in a 42-0 whitewashing of the Lobos. He intercepted two passes, recovered two fumbles and forced a third fumble he nearly recovered as well, but a teammate got there just before him.
John Hardy (Vista Murrieta, Murrieta): There are interceptions and then there are key interceptions. Hardy had three of them, one going for a 25-yard touchdown, and another to seal a 17-14 overtime victory over Los Osos of Rancho Cucamonga.
Nick Isham (Westlake, Westlake Village): Another who played a great all-around game was Isham with two touchdowns rushing, one passing and an interception on defense during a 48-21 victory over Hart of Newhall.
DJ King (Windsor): With his mate and the Redwood Empire's leading rusher last season, Cameron Erion, finished for high school after breaking a leg, the load has been left to this 5-10, 185 pound dual-threat quarterback. Last week in the Jaguar's 42-28 victory over Santa Rosa's Maria Carrillo, he was part of all six touchdowns. King (8-of-15, 153 yards passing) threw three touchdown passes and rushed for three more on 20 carries for 112 yards.
Jake Kraft (Novato): Kraft made Swiss cheese out of visiting Larkspur Redwood in a 43-0 throttling under a blazing sun and 105-degree heat that didn't seem to affect his play one bit. The Hornets' middle linebacker intercepted a pass and took it 18 yards for his team's second score. He also had 13 tackles with three for loss, including a sack.
James Lea (Antioch): We missed the CB/RB last week when two week's ago he went for 20 carries and 275 yards with one TD (75 yards), and made four tackles in the Panthers' 20-0 victory against McNair of Stockton.
Jason Lee (Downey): Lee was Downey's main source of offense in the record setting game against Pitman of Turlock, as he passed for 488 yards and five touchdowns while also rushing for 79 yards. It wasn't enough in a 77-35 loss.
Skyler Logsdon (Nordhoff, Ojai): As school records continue to fall all over the state, Logsdon got in on the action by breaking school records for pass completions in a game with 24, passing yards in a game with 304, and touchdown passes in a game with five in a 42-21 win over Pacifica of Oxnard.
Sean Mannion (Foothill, Pleasanton): Oregon State-bound signal caller passed for 312 yards and two TDs, and ran for a third, in the Falcons' 31-10 road victory in Orinda at Miramonte. Mannion helped earn win No. 200 for Coach Matt Sweeney.
Jeff Matthews (Camarillo): Didn't miss a beat in the Scorpions' 68-0 romp over Golden Valley of Santa Clarita. He threw for 351 yards and six touchdowns on 13 of 15 attempts against a team that was only able to muster 80 yards of total offense. His six touchdown passes is a new school record, according to head coach Dennis Riedmiller.
Adam McCurley (Washington, Easton): He put on an impressive first half performance, as he threw for 357 of his 395 yards and also had five touchdown passes in a 54-18 win over Sunnyside of Fresno.
Stan Moody (Tomales): Veteran Braves coach Leon Feliciano always seems to have someone to implement his running game, and this year it's this 5-11, 205 pound senior running back. Last week in Tomales' 55-20 win over Anderson Valley, Moody had the second best rushing game of his high school career, carrying the ball 26 times for 237 yards and three touchdowns. He also scored on four two-point conversions to give him 26 points on the night. Two games ago at Calistoga, he had five rushing TDs and 117 yards in a 44-0 victory. Moody's best game was last season against the same Calistoga Wildcats, a 12-carry 251-yard, four touchdown effort.
Charly Moreno (Central Union, El Centro): Some teams struggle inside the five-yard line, but not the Spartans as Moreno scored on runs of 1, 1, 4, 6 and 1 yard in a 37-29 triumph over Santana of Santee.
Doug Morris (Rosemont, Sacramento): Teams may have to start kicking the ball out of bounds to prevent him from returning it after Friday's performance against San Juan of Fair Oaks. Morris returned punts 65 and 55 yards for scores while also rushing for a 35-yard touchdown in a 54-6 win.
Chris Navarro (St. Genevieve, Panorama City): Passed for 145 yards on 12 completions and added 236 yards rushing on 15 scrambles in a 43-26 victory over Malibu. He scored four touchdowns on the ground and has accounted for 18 touchdowns both running and passing through four games.
Casey Nielsen (Gahr, Cerritos): At it again as the Gladiators rode Nielson's arm to take the Milk Can from fellow ABC Unified School District member Artesia of Lakewood with a 44-7 victory. He passed for 339 yards and was not intercepted in 43 attempts, and added three touchdown passes as Gahr upped its record to 3-1.
Aoese Noa (San Lorenzo): Helped the Rebels register their first victory of the season with solid contributions on both sides of the ball in a 12-7 victory over Moreau Catholic of Hayward. The FB/MLB rushed for a touchdown on offense and on defense, had a pass interception he returned 43 yards to go along with 11 tackles.
Brett Nottingham & Bryce McGovern (Monte Vista, Danville): The two biggest reasons the Mustangs are 3-0 and ranked No. 9 in this week's CalHiSports.com State Top 25 are UCLA-bound signal-caller Nottingham and his favorite target, wide receiver McGovern. In a 54-21 victory over previously unbeaten Heritage of Brentwood, Nottingham was a pinpoint 14-of-18 for 371 yards with five touchdowns and no picks. All five of the TD passes went to McGovern. To read more about McGovern's performance, check back later in the week.
James Nunley (Woodcreek, Roseville): Despite rushing for 296 yards and scoring four touchdowns, he had to be a bit disappointed after Friday night was done as the Timberwolves lost a 35-34 heartbreaker to Bear River of Lake of the Pines.
Lance Orender & Jake East (Buchanan, Clovis): It seemed like it was Fireworks Friday this past week on football fields all over the state as Orender was 26 of 38 passing the ball for 513 yards and six touchdowns. He even added 50 yards rushing and another touchdown as the Bears defeated Bakersfield, 56-41. East caught seven passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns as the two teams combined for 1,279 yards of total offense, which was only the second highest total of the night, but still good for fourth all time in the ESPN RISE CalHiSports.com State Record Book & Almanac.
Jamaal Perkins (Rio Mesa, Oxnard): Broke Malachi Lewis' reported school record of 311 yards rushing when he went for 317 during a 34-17 victory over Agoura of Agoura Hills. He did his damage on 22 carries and added three touchdowns.
David Rango (San Mateo): Not sure how we missed him from his September 18 performance, especially when this Bearcat was more like a Grizzly. Rango rushed for 315 yards on just 12 carries with four TDs, including an 83-yarder, in San Mateo's 41-18 demolition of South San Francisco El Camino.
Ronald Saxton (Seaside): Did all he could to pull out a victory over North Salinas as he passed for 393 yards and four touchdowns. Seaside also took a 41-34 lead late in the game, but it wasn't enough to prevent a last-minute 48-41 loss.
Austin Shull (Montgomery, Santa Rosa): Had 14 tackles, including a sack, but it wasn't enough as the Vikings lost on a missed extra point, 21-20, against visiting Casa Grande of Petaluma.
Gabe Soto (Cloverdale): Has been in double-digits for tackles in all three Eagles' games and each has resulted in a victory. Soto had 12 against McKinleyville, 11 versus Kelseyville and 10 last week against Willits.
Jazper Strange (South Fork, Miranda): It was truly a unique stat line for Strange. A triple-threat as a QB/RB/WR the 6-0, 180 pound senior only threw one pass in the Cubs' 27-14 victory over Potter Valley and it was incomplete. He did catch two for 72 yards with one for a TD, and rushed 19 times for 178 yards and three additional trips to pay dirt.
Moe Strickling (Pajaro Valley, Watsonville): He rushed for 296 yards and three touchdowns and returned a punt 78 yards for another touchdown as the Grizzlies' game against Greenfield ended in a 46-46 tie that just missed setting a state record. The current state record for this highest scoring tie was set in 1970 between Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park as the two teams battled to a 48-48 stalemate.
Chris Thomas (Pioneer, Woodland): He rushed for a season high 341 yards and scored four touchdowns in the Patriots' 49-27 win over Foothill of Sacramento.
Malcolm Thomas (Panorama, Panorama City): Morningside of Inglewood simply couldn't slow down one of the most underrated backs in the SoCal in its 42-27 loss to the Panthers. Thomas rushed for 235 yards and five touchdowns on 31 carries, with four of those scores coming after the intermission.
Xavier Stephens (Tulare Union, Tulare): He may be just a sophomore, but his performance in his third varsity game made him look like he's been playing varsity football for years. Stephens rushed for 289 yards on 17 carries and scored six touchdowns in the Redskins' 69-33 victory against Mt. Whitney of Visalia.
Sebastian Vader (San Marcos): The 6-4 quarterback scored on runs of 22, 3, 11, 6 and 5 yards to lead the resurgent Knights to a 55-7 rout of Ontario.
Ezequiel Valdivia (St. Helena): Acting like legendary two-way star Bronko Nagurski, this big, strong, bruising 6-0, 219-pound senior running back and defensive lineman helped lead the Saints to a 3-0 start by rushing for 234 yards and three TDs, including a 67-yarder, in a 27-12 victory over Lower Lake. For good measure, he added five tackles on defense.
Dominick Walker (Pitman, Turlock): We already wrote plenty about the Pride's game against Downey that set a state record with 1,420 yards of combined offense, and Walker was the game's top individual rusher. He finished with 251 yards and scored four touchdowns, including one on a 99-yard run, in Pitman's 77-35 victory.
Jorrian Washington (Dorsey, Los Angeles): Spliting time between QB and RB, Washington helped the Dons to a 39-28 victory over Compton with 234 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 17 carries. He scores came from 49, 21 and 50 yards out. Don't look now, but Dorsey is 3-0 and is eyeing a crack at knocking off L.A. City Section favorite Crenshaw in a Coliseum League showdown.
Kimani Washington (Encinal, Alameda): Although his team lost two weeks ago, 28-13 to state-ranked Serra of San Mateo, the 5-11, 210-pound Washington still recorded 13 tackles, many bone-crunching. This past week he crunched his cross-town arch rivals from Alameda High with 17 tackles in a 34-16 Jets victory.
Mark Wright (Rolling Hills Prep, San Pedro): Mark had all the Wright stuff on defense, intercepting three passes but RHP still lost to Hope Centre of Compton, 32-0, during eight-man play.
