Since the 1980 season, when Cal-Hi Sports chronicled the feats of California prep standouts such as Santa Barbara's Randall Cunningham, Orange Glen's Sean Salisbury and Hayward's Jack Del Rio, it's been our duty and pleasure to profile the state's top individual performers on a weekly basis. This season, however, we're raising the bar a little higher. Since our exclusive state record book is getting so big (352 pages and counting) and the minimum cutoffs quite high to be included, we going to make sure we're profiling only the very best performances. Plus, we want to make finding your favorite player and following the other top performers easier and funner than ever. We might even throw in a "blast from the past" every once in a while. It's this kind of exclusive content and research that makes ESPN RISE CalHiSports.com the foremost authority of California prep sports. This is the 30th consecutive year we will publish this feature, starting back when many of the top performers' parents were not even in high school yet.

Chris Adams (Marin Catholic, Kentfield): For the second straight week it was the 5-10, 212-pound senior running back coming up big, only this time his team was victorious. After gaining 197 yards with three TDs in a season-opening heartbreaking 29-28 loss two weeks ago at St. Ignatius (San Francisco), Adams rushed for 287 yards on 26 carries with four touchdowns on runs of 10, three, two, and 13 yards in a 28-19 home victory against Las Lomas of Walnut Creek. He now has 484 yards and seven touchdowns in the season's first two games.
Justin Alo (Carson): Accounted for six touchdowns in the Colts' 56-21 thrashing of A.B. Miller of Fontana. The junior signal-caller threw for 252 yards and five touchdown passes and added his sixth rushing.
Scott Arellano (Santa Ynez): Averaged almost 10 yards per carry as he rushed for 230 yards on 24 carries to lead Santa Ynez to a 23-14 victory over
Carpinteria.
Jonathan Barnfather & Leonard Baker (Hueneme, Oxnard): Barnfather and Baker connected for three scores through the air as Barnfather totaled five touchdown passes in a 61-6 victory over Santa Clara of Oxnard. Baker also scored on an 89-yard kickoff return to open the second half.
De'Shawn Beck (Jordan, Los Angeles): All-state do-it-all performer rushed for 273 yards and two touchdowns as JoHi defeated cross-town Locke, 25-0 in a non-league game. Beck can run the ball, but will spend a lot of time under center in Elijah Asante's "Attack the Weakness" offense.
Mark Borland (Santa Teresa, San Jose): This big, bruising 6-0, 215-pound senior FB/LB has been getting it done on both sides of the ball for the 2-0 Saints. Besides being one of the top rushers in the CCS, he's the reported leading tackler in the section with 35 after two games. In an opening season 42-36 shootout win at home against Saratoga two weeks ago, Borland rushed for 201 yards with four TDs, caught two passes for 24 yards, and recorded 18 tackles. Last weekend in 38-7 easy win at Santa Clara, he had 17 tackles and a fumble recovery.
Dominique Brooks (Hoover, San Diego): Rushed for 256 yards and touchdowns of 26, 6, 11, 6 and 5 yards as the Cardinals outscored San Ysidro (Chula Vista), 33-14.
Christian Bucknor (South Gate): In only 12 carries, Bucknor dashed for 283 yards rushing and scored six touchdowns as the Rams downed Berntein of Los Angeles. On defense, Ricardo Estrada came away with two interceptions. Last season, South Gate only won one game, but they crushed Bernstein, 66-0. That new school set a dubious state record by giving up 522 points in a scoreless season.
Robbie Burbank (Paso Robles): There are more than a few teams that fail to even get 300 yards of total offense in a game, but the Bearcats got 395 rushing yards alone just from Burbank in their 55-42 road win over Central of Fresno. Burbank carried the ball 32 times in his huge outing and scored six touchdowns. The San Luis Obispo Tribune-News reported that Burbank's total is believed to be the second-highest in San Luis Obispo County history. In 2006, T.J. Nelson from Cambria Coast Union rambled for 451 yards on 31 carries and scored five times in a 63-13 victory over Fresno Christian.
Isaiah Burse (Modesto Christian, Modesto): He's a player we love to watch on either side of the ball as he makes an impact whenever he's in the game. He scored a touchdown in three different ways in a 63-0 win over Orestimba of Newman. Burse opened his scoring night by throwing a 56-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter followed by a 17-yard touchdown run to open the second quarter and then had two interception returns for scores before halftime.
Kevin Burt (Clear Lake): When Burt took the field on 9/11 it spelled doom for the visiting Bears from Pierce of Arbuckle. The senior running back rolled up 292 yards and three TDs in the Cardinals' 45-14 victory.
Jesse Callier (Warren, Downey): Returning all-state back has big goals for the season. He wants to hit 3,000 yards rushing and 50 TDs, and during a week zero win he literally got his season off on the right foot. He rushed for 169 yards and four "tuds" plus he returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a score. Game number two resulted in a 222-yard, four-touchdown performance in the Bears' 30-21 victory over Santa Fe of Santa Fe Springs.
Diego Camarillo (San Rafael): This weeks Marin Independent Journal Boys prep of the week had a game to remember in the Bulldogs 39-0 whitewashing of Hercules. The junior tailback scored three TDs, all of a different variety, rushing for a 53-yarder, hauling in a 43-yard pass reception, and returning a punt 60-yards to pay dirt. On the night he had 316 all-purpose yards
Joshua Clark (Hillcrest Christian, Granada Hills): Caught 12 passes totaling 285 yards and five scores during a 50-33 loss to Victory Valley during eight-man competition.
Brennan Clay (Scripps Ranch, San Diego): Bound for the University of Oklahoma, Clay again showed his versatility (he rushed and caught passes for more than 1,000 yards last year) as he rushed for 135 yards and a 38-yard TD in addition to pulling in five passes for 147 yards and an 85 yard score in a 37-14 victory over Poway.
Zack Cogniglio and Omar Omilabu (Alhambra, Martinez): Zack led the sack attack and Omar was right up to par, as each had four sacks in a 28-14 Bulldogs' victory over Healdsburg.
Jared Cohen (Cypress): Although he caught just five passes, three went for touchdowns and Cohen finished with a whopping 186 yards in a 47-20 win over Valley Christian (Cerritos).
Deontae Cooper (Citrus Hill, Perris): Cooper, who led the state with 2,948 rushing yards last year, got off to a fast start with 234 yards on 26 carries and three TDs giving Citrus Hill its 29th straight win-one shy of the Inland Empire record.
K.J. Cusack (St. Joseph, Santa Maria): In a 59-18 romp past Bishop Diego of Santa Barbara, K.J. had four carries for 180 yards and three TDs while also starring on special teams with two separate punt returns for scores. Cusack did not play in the second half.
Jackson Diamond (Burbank): Secondary gem intercepted three enemy passes and recovered a fumble, but Burbank fell to Chaminade of West Hills, 17-14, in overtime.
Ronald Douglas (Chaffey, Ontario): Douglas opened with a 71-yard TD and added scores of 5 and 15 yards as he rolled up 259 yards on 21 carries to lead the Tigers to a 34-10 win over Alta Loma.
Cameron Erion (Windsor): We had to get in the Redwood Empire's all-time leading single-game rusher who also finishes his career with the No. 22 spot in the state all-time after last year rushing for 450 yards in a win against Petaluma. We say finishes his career because last Saturday night in a 28-14 victory over Redwood (Larkspur) he was on his way to another 200-plus-yard performance when he suffered a compound fracture of his left leg that ended his season after rushing for 197 yards and three scores. He added a key interception, too, before the injury. Erion rushed for 1,641 yards and 17 TDs in his first varsity season last year.
Kris Farinha (St. Vincent's, Petaluma): The 5-10, 195-pound senior RB/LB was the big man in the Mustangs' 33-18 opening season victory over Tomales. On offense he rushed for 122 yards and one touchdown. Defensively he had 20 tackles and blocked a punt.
Sedale Foster (J.W. North, Riverside): Rushed for 256 yards and four touchdowns in a 47-21 victory over Los Osos of Rancho Cucamonga.
Matt Garcia (Parlier): He rushed for 183 yards and four touchdowns and added a fifth touchdown on a fumble recovery and return in the Panthers' 45-12 win over Orosi.
Asher Gotzmer (Placer, Auburn): He scored three touchdowns while rushing for 266 yards as the Hillmen defeated Rosemont of Sacramento, 32-6.
Dano Graves & Kori Babineaux (Folsom): Graves put on an impressive first half performance against Davis before finding a spot along the sideline for the second half as he passed for 342 yards and five touchdowns in the Bulldogs' 41-21 win. Three of the five TDs went to Babineaux, who is one of the top junior receivers in the state.
Brandon Haynes (Millennium, Tracy): The Falcons' offense didn't have much luck in their season-opening 34-7 loss to Highlands of North Highlands, but what luck they did have was almost entirely through the air with Haynes on the receiving end. Haynes caught 14 passes for 198 of the team's 238 total yards and scored the lone touchdown in the fourth quarter to prevent the shutout.
Anthony Herrera (Wilcox, Santa Clara): One of the big reasons the Chargers are 2-0 and ranked No. 18 in the CalHiSports.com Bay Area rankings is because of this solid running back. In an opening game 45-0 victory over Menlo-Atherton (Atherton) that avenged Wilcox's loss in last year's CCS Large School Division title game, Herrera only saw limited action, rushing for 68 yards and one touchdown. He also caught an 85-yard TD pass. This past weekend at Terra Nova (Pacifica), he went for 338 yards on 24 carries with four trips to pay dirt, including a 73-yard run. Herrera, now a senior, enters this season as the reigning rushing leader in the CCS after gaining 2,053 yards with 23 TDs last year.
Joe Kanahele & Dillon Lantz (Escondido Charter): The two amassed more than 400 yards rushing in the White Tigers' 64-41 win over Foothills Christian (El Cajon). Kanahele gained 233 yards rushing (five TDs) and another 108 receiving (two TDs) while Lantz pitched in with 189 yards rushing and another two TDs.
Collin Keoshian (Santa Clarita Christian): Six touchdowns is still a nice effort, even in 8-man football. In a 61-28 win over Christian Life Academy, Keoshian ran in from 8, 12 and 7 yards while catching TD passes of 35 and 42 yards plus a 45-yard interception return for six.
Frank Koppenhauer (Canoga Park): With all-city running back Tim Wilson moving out of state, the Hunters must find offense from others and Koppenhauer was the answer in a 55-13 week zero victory over Belmont of Los Angeles. He passed for 301 yards and four scores, including 77 and 60-yarders. He also hit pay dirt twice on the ground in the easy win.
Tristin Lay (Kennedy, Sacramento): The Cougars may have lost on the road in a 44-37 shootout to El Camino of Sacramento but Lay did all he could as he rushed for 241 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries. He also totaled 175 yards on kickoff returns, which included a 93-yard return for a score.
Max Leffler (Grace Brethren, Simi Valley): In his first game as the Lancers' starting quarterback two weekends ago, Leffler completed 26 of 54 passes for 259 yards and three TDs in a 32-30 win against Big Bear of Big Bear Lake. The former receiver, who had 49 catches as a sophomore, also rushed for 77 yards and one TD and brought back an interception 77 yards for another score.
Steven Manfro (Valencia): J.V. standout from last season is making a smooth adjustment to the varsity for a team that is knocking on the doorstep of the state top 25. He not only rushed for 190 yards, but he also caught 13 passes for an additional 145 yards in the Vikings' 39-36 victory over Thousand Oaks. He added a 44-yard pass just for good measure and finished with 3 TDs.
Jonathan Mariscal (Roosevelt, Los Angeles): Not only did he help prevent Alhambra's dangerous wide out Mitchell Crockom from catching any passes, he also returned an interception 23 yards and ran back a kickoff 90 yards for a score in a 34-20 non-league victory for the Roughriders.
Daniel Mauro (Hilmar): History was made Friday night in a 58-17 blowout victory over Denair as Mauro kicked a school record field goal from 54 yards out to break the previous record of 47 yards set 32 years ago by his dad, Matt Mauro. Our newest state record book lists those who have made field goals from at least 56 yards out, but it's possible his field goal is the second-longest in section history behind Zack McSweeney of Nevada Union, who kicked a 58-yard field goal in a 37-10 win over Casa Roble in 1994.
Patrick McCarthy (Tokay, Lodi): Because of a family trip, McCarthy missed a practice last week that led to him having to sit out the first quarter against Bear Creek of Stockton. He quickly made up for lost time once in the game, opening the second quarter with a 36-yard touchdown run. On the night, he nearly averaged 25 yards per carry as he rushed for 192 yards and four touchdowns on just eight carries in the Tigers' 54-6 road win.
Derek McIntyre & Devin Des Jarlais (Franklin, Elk Grove): McIntyre showed he could pass and run effectively in a 28-10 win over Sacred Heart Cathedral of San Francisco, as he passed for 201 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 72 yards and two more scores. Des Jarlais was the main target through the air as he caught five passes for 192 yards and was on the receiving end on both of McIntryre's TDs.
Andrew McNeese (Benicia): In a sizzling start to his junior season, McNeese passed for five first-half touchdowns in the Panthers' season opening 41-20 win over American of Fremont. For the game, he completed 14 passes for 321 yards as the Panthers led at halftime, 34-0, and didn't throw the ball much in the second half.
Cameron Mikell (Rio Linda): He helped kill any hopes that Roseville had of picking up a victory, as he rushed for 206 yards and scored four touchdowns in a 36-20 victory for the Knights that many considered to be an upset road win.
Casey Nielsen (Gahr, Cerritos): There is another Nielsen under center for the Gladiators that figures to throw for a ton of yardage this season. Casey replaces his brother Corey (now at Hawaii) and in Gahr's season opener, he completed 30 of 42 passes for 417 yards and five scores. It was Millikan of Long Beach, however, that came away with a 35-34 victory after Nielsen had a two-point conversion attempt picked off late in the game. He got back on track in Gahr's second game, as he tossed three touchdowns and passed for 331 yards in a 24-23 victory over Kennedy of La Palma. All three of his touchdown passes went to Shaan Johnson, who finished with eight receptions for 201 yards.
David Oates (Capital Christian, Sacramento): In a 29-14 win by Capital Christian over Bear River of Lake of the Pines, Oates was one of the game's top pass catchers. It's just that three of his catches came on defense as a result of interceptions.
Brandon Perez (Calvary Christian, Santa Ana): Rushed for 237 yards and TDs of 41, 60, 75 and 23 yards in a 44-0 victory over Crean Lutheran South.
Andy Peterson (Kennedy, La Palma): Amassed some big numbers as he completed 25-of-38 passes for 340 yards and three touchdowns but it still wasn't enough in a 56-28 setback to Tustin.
Nick Prescott (Canyon, Anaheim): Despite catching 11 passes for 164 yards and three TDs, Prescott's Comanches were edged by Fullerton, 21-20, in both team's season-opener.
Dominic Prouty (El Capitan, Lakeside): Earned defensive player of the league in the Grossmont North last season and showed why when he was credited with 28 tackles against Ramona in a 9-0 setback.
A.J. Rafter (Tustin): The Tillers linebacker had three interceptions and a fumble recovery in the 56-28 victory over Kennedy (La Palma).
C.J. Reyes (Hart, Newhall): He passed for three touchdowns and ran for another, but it was his foot that provided the game winning points as his 33-yard field goal with five seconds gave the Indians a 37-34 win over Palmdale. For the game he completed 23 of 37 passes for 367 yards.
Tony Rodriguez & Shaquille Hill (Brookside Christian, Stockton): The Knights' offense racked up 745 total yards with Rodriguez throwing for 307 yards and four touchdowns in a 64-7 win vs. Foresthill. Hill was on the receiving end of one of those four passing scores. He also rushed the ball for 205 yards on 11 carries with three touchdowns.
Ezell Ruffin (Wilson, Long Beach): Led the Bruins to a 49-6 intersectional victory over Huntington Park by scoring four touchdowns. He caught two TD passes from sophomore quarterback Brett Harper, returned a short punt 45 yards for a score and hit pay dirt on a 60-yard interception return.
Joshua Shaw (Palmdale): All-state candidate did all he could do to prevent a loss, passing for 213 yards and two touchdowns, rushing for 117 yards and a touchdown, and returning a kickoff 98 yards for a score. It wasn't enough to prevent a 37-34 loss to Hart of Newhall.
Jeremy Sites (Dougherty Valley, San Ramon): Senior tailback/DB had the magic number of touchdowns to qualify for the feature, getting five in a 42-18 victory two weeks ago over Willow Glen of San Jose. He rushed seven times for 153 yards and three TDs, and added two more scores on five receptions for 131 yards. He wasn't bad on defense either where he recorded 12 tackles.
Nelson Spruce (Westlake, Westlake Village): The 6-foot-2 junior pulled in five passes and four of them went for touchdowns as he gobbled up 231 yards in a 48-26 win over Paso Robles. His scores came from 94, 76, 31 and 21 yards out and all of them occurred in the second half.
Kyle Steffes (Paraclete, Lancaster): In a game played two weeks ago, Steffes opened up his season big during a 13-3 win over Serrano of Phelan. Steffes had field goals of 50 and 48 yards and had punts of 49 and 43 yards.
Kenny Stills (La Costa Canyon, Carlsbad): Equaled a modern-day state record when he returned a kickoff 99 yards in a 30-10 victory over rival Carlsbad. He added TD receptions of 64 and 34 yards.
Malcolm Thomas (Panorama, Panorama City): Stat star from new L.A. City Section school averaged over 10 yards a carry in a 55-14 win over Van Nuys as he rushed for 249 yards on 20 carries and scored five touchdowns.
Jon Trotter (Encinal, Alameda): Trotter was strutting his stuff for the defending NCS Division III champion Jets in a season-opening 45-18 road victory at El Cerrito. He ran for 208-yards, all on only 12 carries, with two trips to pay dirt. We'll see if he can turn on the after-burners this week at home against Serra of San Mateo.
Derick Vega (Westwood): The senior tight end had nine catches for 234 yards and four touchdowns against Dunsmuir, but it wasn't enough to keep the Lumberjacks from losing 55-48 in what will likely end up as one of the higher scoring games of the year.
Chris Walker (Reseda): The junior wide out had quite the season-opening performance as he caught seven passes for a school-record 246 yards and four touchdowns in a 43-0 win over North Hollywood.
