The season is now underway and we finally get to our last preseason team from the CIF Southern Section and from around the state. Even though some schools have played twice, in order to be fair to all players in the state, here's the final installment of our annual series in which we honor the preseason standouts from various regions throughout the Golden State. This particular region includes the current No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the state, so it shouldn't be too surprising to see numerous players from those teams written up.
Note: This team does not include players from Moorpark or Westlake of Westlake Village as those players were included on the San Fernando Valley squad. It does include players from Oaks Christian of Westlake Village as well as those from the other Marmonte League schools. Make sure you follow us at twitter.com/calhisports as we'll do our best to give you live updates from the big games we attend all season long. You can also follow us on Facebook. Offense
WR Phillip Muscarella (Newbury Park) 5-10, 175, Sr.
In his first game of the season, Muscarella caught seven passes for 104 yards in a one-point loss to Thousand Oaks. As a junior, he also was productive with 50 catches for 730 yards and eight touchdowns. In addition, Muscarella likes to show off his soft hands and quick reflexes on defense. He had 69 tackles and two interceptions last season.
TE Tyler Perry (Buena) 6-5, 240 Sr.
Despite his huge size, Perry showed last year he can catch the ball just as good as he can block as he caught 27 passes for 312 yards and a touchdown for the Bulldogs. On defense from the linebacker position, he also recorded 22 tackles and two sacks. Most of the Pac-10 came to see him play last year and during the summer he verballed to Oregon State.
OL Eric Bilderback (Paso Robles) 6-4, 275 Sr.
The majority of the Bearcats' offense last season came via the running game where Bilderback helped create holes for a rushing attack that gained over 2,700 yards and scored 31 touchdowns. He was an all-league and All-San Luis Obispo County selection last year and has drawn interest from colleges like Utah and Cal.
OL Giovanni DiPaulo (St. Bonaventure, Ventura) 6-5, 255 Sr.
He anchored the Seraphs' offensive line last year on the way their win in the CIF Division III bowl game. With his blocking playing a key factor, Devon Blackledge rushed for over 1,400 yards and 19 touchdowns and quarterback Logan Meyer passed for over 2,300 yards and 24 touchdowns. Virtually every school in the Pac-10 was after his college commitment and before the school year got underway he verballed to USC.
OL Erik Kohler (Oaks Christian, Westlake Village) 6-4, 275 Sr.
Opening holes for Malcolm Jones or giving Nick Montana plenty of time to pass the ball, Kohler dominated along the offensive line last season. Like Montana, he also has verballed to Washington where he'll look to protect his quarterback for many more years to come.
OL Zach Perron (St. Joseph, Santa Maria) 6-6, 265 Sr.
Perron is the other good-sized lineman we had to squeeze on this unit. He was an all-league player for the Saints last year and is getting interest from colleges. He's definitely a good combination of strength, quick feet and determination.
OL Dalton Spinas (Atascadero) 6-2, 250 Sr.
The latest line standout for Atascadero was named first team all-league and second team all-county on offense last season after not allowing any sacks and recording 15 pancake blocks. Spinas also saw time on defense where he had four sacks. Washington and Utah are among the school's interested in getting him to come to their school.
QB Nick Montana (Oaks Christian, Westlake Village) 6-2, 185 Sr.
He started all 14 games for the Lions last season as they went undefeated and captured their sixth straight CIF Southern Section championship. The son of NFL Hall of Famer Joe Montana passed for over 2,400 yards and 33 touchdowns despite often sitting out in the second half of blowout victories. He has verballed to Washington and will play his first game in Washington on Saturday as the Lions take their top ranking in California and head to the Northwest where they will play Skyline of Sammamish, Wash., in a battle of top 10 nationally-ranked programs.
RB Devon Blackledge (St. Bonaventure, Ventura) 5-9, 165 Sr.
During the offseason, Blackledge participated in the 2009 U.S. Army National Combine and was among the top 10 in the 40-yard dash. Last year, he helped the Seraphs to a CIF Division III state title win over Cardinal Newman as he ran for over 1,400 yards and scored 19 touchdowns. He is currently receiving most of his college interests from schools in the Pac-10 like Cal, Arizona, and UCLA.
RB Malcolm Jones (Oaks Christian, Westlake Village) 6-0, 217 Sr.
Big Malc is arguably not only one of the best running backs in the state but in the nation as he rushed for 1,504 yards and 26 touchdowns in the Lions' undefeated season. He was narrowed his college choice down to either Stanford or UCLA but has yet to decide between the two. Jones should be one of the front-runners this year for the Mr. Football State Player of the Year honor. He already has a 275-yard outing to his credit.
RB Cameron Roberson (Newbury Park) 6-1, 215 Sr.
He stepped up for the Panthers last year after injuries to others during a 7-4 season as he rushed for 1,452 yards and 18 touchdowns. Roberson also showed he was more than capable catching the ball as he caught 29 passes for 279 yards and five touchdowns. Just two weeks ago, he visited Notre Dame, watched the season-opening game and came home to commit to the Fighting Irish.
PK Jacob Bedell (Paso Robles) 5-11, 175 Sr.
He connected on six field goals for the Bearcats last year and also converted 46 PATs.
Defense
DL - Alani Fua (Oaks Christian, Westlake Village) 6-6, 215 Sr.
Fua was one of many talented players for the Lions on the defensive side of the ball during their undefeated season as he recorded 67 tackles and three sacks while also recovering three fumbles. Despite his brother currently being at Stanford, he decided this offseason to verbal to BYU, which was the first school to show interest In him while also having teammate Zac Stout also headed there.
DL - Cody Kurz (St. Bonaventure, Ventura) 6-3, 245 Jr.
His tackle and sack totals last year weren't as high as you'd expect but there's a good reason why all the big shots of the Pac-10 like Cal and USC are after this talented Class of 2011 defender and it's because he can flat out play. In one of the Seraphs' most important games last season, he recorded a 35-yard interception return for a score in a win over Crespi. Kurz also stood out as a sophomore in the CIF Division III state bowl game and was named to the all-state sophomore squad.
DL - Cassius Marsh (Oaks Christian, Westlake Village) 6-4, 290 Sr.
On a defense that has multiple Division I recruits, Marsh is perhaps the most highly regarded as he had 44 tackles and six sacks last year. He just recently announced he has narrowed his choices for college down to Oklahoma, Cal, LSU, and USC and his hoping to decide in November.
LB Joe Camacho (Santa Paula) 6-1, 220 Sr.
He shared the Frontier League defensive player of the year award last season after recording 151 tackles for the Cardinals, who captured the league title and went 8-3. Camacho will be relied on even more this year as he is one of the team's only two returning full-time starters. He does more than just dominate in football as he captured the CIFSS Inland Division wrestling championship at 215 pounds.
LB Dylan Davis (St. Bonaventure, Ventura) 6-0, 235 Sr.
Playing the "WILL” linebacker position for the Seraphs during their championship season, he recorded 70 tackles, nine sacks and intercepted four passes to earn all-league honors. He also made history last year as the school's first ever non-senior captain and he has recently received his first offer, which came in from New Mexico St.
LB P.J. Gremaud (St. Bonaventure, Ventura) 6-3, 245 Sr.
He was second-team All Channel League last season and should put up even bigger numbers this year as he teams up with Dylan Davis to make a dynamite linebacker tandem. Gremaud has received interest from schools like UNLV and Utah State with more likely to come as he impresses this season.
LB Jamie Razo (Pacifica, Oxnard) 6-2, 210 Sr.
He was a sack machine last year for the Tritons as he recorded 13 tackles on the opposing quarterback with 54 total tackles on the year. On offense, Razo contributed by catching passes as he recorded 28 receptions for 472 yards and four touchdowns. Boise State, Arizona and UCLA are among the schools after the Tritons' sack leader.
LB Zac Stout (Oaks Christian, Westlake Village) 6-2, 220 Sr.
He was considered the top Class of 2010 linebacker in the Southland by the LA Times and he showed why he is so highly regarded as a junior with 112 tackles and two interceptions. Stout was named to our All-State Underclass team and also earned first-team honors in the Tri-Valley league and Ventura County. Stout also is one of two Lions' defenders to verbal to BYU for next year where he'll join teammate Alani Fua.
DB Troy Hill (St. Bonaventure, Ventura) 5-10, 160 Sr.
During his junior year, he had five interceptions, one returned for a touchdown, and 46 tackles while contributing on special teams where he returned a kick for a score. Hill wants to stay nearby and go to a Pac-10 school next year and right now it's looking like Washington is leading over schools such as Arizona, Oregon, and UCLA.
DB Matt Miller (Righetti, Santa Maria) 5-11, 180 Sr.
He was named to the Los Padres all-league team last year after recording 106 tackles and four sacks for the Warriors, who just barely finished with a winning record at 6-5. The Warriors named him team MVP after the year and he also was all-county. He also played some at wide receiver where he caught 26 passes for 424 yards and five touchdowns.
DB Daniel Wheeler (Templeton) 6-0, 165 Sr.
The Eagles didn't have a winning season last year but he did all he could as he had 96 tackles and six interceptions and earned all-county second-team honors. His role this year will be even more increased as besides playing in the secondary and returning kicks he is expected to start at running back this year.
P Jeremy Stein (Carpinteria) 6-1, 195 Sr.
He got plenty of action punting the ball last season for the Warriors as he had 38 punts with a 41.47 yards per punt average and a season long punt of 54 yards. Stein also showed he can do more than just kick as he was one of Carp's leading tacklers with 78.
Multi-Purpose
RB/WR Dan Ando (Pioneer Valley, Santa Maria) 5-8, 180 Sr.
The Panthers had a nice 9-win season before running into Oaks Christian. Doing most of their running all year long was Ando, who picked up 1,315 yards and 22 touchdowns. He also recorded 104 yards and two touchdowns through the air as recorded at least one reception in over half of Pioneer Valley's games. Ando was named to the Los Padres League first-team at the running back position.
QB/RB Thomas Bernal (Paso Robles) 6-0, 195 Sr.
Passing or running the ball, Bernal was a threat for the Bearcats, who won nine games last season. Bernal passed for 1,615 yards and 13 touchdowns while rushing for 354 yards and five scores. He will be relied on even more this year, his third as the starting signal caller, to contribute on defense at safety as Paso Robles lost all 11 starters from last year's defense.
DB/ATH K.J. Cusack (St. Joseph's, Santa Maria) 5-9, 160 Sr.
The Knights got him on the field as much as they could last year and he contributed on both sides of the ball. On offense, he rushed for 553 yards and six touchdowns while adding another 129 yards and two scores on nine receptions. He recently picked up his first offers from Air Force and Portland State. Last week, Cusack returned two punts for touchdowns as St. Joseph's defeated Bishop Diego of Santa Barbara, 59-18.
LB/RB Henry Fernandez (Oxnard) 6-0, 190 Sr.
In each Yellowjackets game last season, Fernandez played a huge part in the run game's effectiveness. He was key in stopping the opponent's rushing attack while contributing to his team's mostly rushing offense. On the year, he had 86 tackles and a sack on defense and on offense he rushed for 654 yards and six touchdowns.
WR/DB/QB Max Leffler (Grace Brethren, Simi Valley) 6-1, 195 Jr.
They're mad about Max at Grace Brethren and for good reason. After a junior year in which he caught 49 passes for 694 yards five TDs and made 79 tackles with three interceptions on defense, Leffler has switched to quarterback for this year. In his first game, in leading Grace Brethren past Big Bear of Big Bear Lake, he completed 26 of 54 passes for 259 yards and three TDs, rushed for 77 yards with one TD and scored on a 77-yard interception return.
QB/ATH Logan Meyer (St. Bonaventure, Ventura) 6-1, 210 Sr.
He was the guy under center that led the Seraphs to a victory down in Carson, wrapping up a year that saw him pass for 2,451 yards and 25 touchdowns. Meyer earned all-league honors and currently has schools like Fresno State, Boise State and Utah recruiting him. St. Bonaventure has won eight section titles in the last 10 years and is considered the favorite for another this year in the CIFSS Northern Division with Meyer at the helm.
