Team Name: St. Margaret's (SJ Capistrano)
Head Coach: Harry Welch (29-0, 209-46-2 overall)
Last Year's Records: 15-0, 9-1 for J.V.
Returning Starters: 12 (5 offense, 7 defense)
Players Most Deserving of Preseason Honors: LB Mike Schmall, FS Chris Adams, DE Fred Valencia, WR John Carpenter, RB John Murayama
Newcomers Who Could Make An Impact: RB Matt Duentes and OL Brett Nicholas
Coach's General Outlook: We have some work to do with the offensive line and will have a new quarterback this year. Our defense with so many returning starters should be the strength of the team.
Other Teams To Watch From The Area (listed by coach): Francis Parker (San Diego), Tesoro (Las Flores), Mission Viejo, San Clemente
All-league level players with GPAs above 3.50: Mike Schrall, Chris Adams, Fred Valencia, John Carpenter, John Murayama
CalHiSports.com Comments: Welch has yet to lose a game since he arrived at St. Margaret's from Canyon of Canyon Country. This year's team should be equally as strong as the last two, even with a new quarterback, since there is so much back on defense. Murayama also is back with 1,300 yards rushing. Even so, returning to the CIF small schools state final might be a tall task since the Tartans are playing Parker of San Diego on Sept. 11. Parker will be led by one of the most dynamic talents in the state, Deon Randall, and will be itching to end Santa Margarita's streak. Whoever wins that game will be in the driver's seat for the rest of the season in that CIF bowl game division.
Team Name: Rocklin
Head Coach: Greg Benzel (50-42 overall)
Last Year's Records: 4-6, 4-6 for J.V.
Returning Starters: 14 (8 offense, 6 defense)
Players Most Deserving of Preseason Honors: QB James Laughrea and RB Jackson Cummings
Newcomers Who Could Make An Impact: WR Tiger Sorenson
Coach's General Outlook: We have excellent depth on offense while not having much depth on defense.
Other Teams To Watch From The Area (listed by coach): Granite Bay, Del Oro (Loomis), Woodcreek (Roseville)
All-league level players with GPAs above 3.50: QB James Laughrea, RB Jackson Cummings, RB-LB Daniel Lassard and QB-DB Garth Keffer
CalHiSports.com Comments: With a league as strong as the Sierra Foothill, which also includes Granite Bay and Del Oro, it's not going to be easy, but the Thunder do appear to have the pieces for a team that could be similar to the 8-2 squad of two seasons ago. Cummings is back for his third year as the starter and was a key member of last year's basketball team that played in the CIF Division II state final. Laughrea also is among the group of 14 returning starters after throwing for more than 1,500 yards as a junior.
Team Name: M.L. King (Riverside)
Head Coach: Ken Mushinskie (14-20 overall)
Last Year's Records: 2-8, 6-4 for J.V.
Returning Starters: 7 (3 offense, 4 defense)
Players Most Deserving of Preseason Honors: DB Justin Decoud and RB Todd Handley
Newcomers Who Could Make An Impact: DB J.J. Hickman and WR Charles Redd
Coach's General Outlook: We will be young and inexperienced but will play with an excellent attitude.
Other Teams To Watch From The Area (listed by coach): Corona Centennial and Norco
All-league level players with GPAs above 3.50: Justin Decoud
CalHiSports.com Comments: The Wolves may not win many games this season, but part of the reason for that is their membership in the Big VIII League. Even if they end up as a stronger unit than a year ago, winning still will be extremely difficult against the likes of Corona Centennial Norco and Santiago of Corona. The defense will be led by honors candidate Decoud, who had four interceptions and 40 tackles as a junior.
Team Name: Hilmar
Head Coach: Frank Marques (59-12 overall)
Last Year's Records: 12-1, 6-4 for J.V.
Returning Starters: 3 (1 offense, 2 defense)
Players Most Deserving of Preseason Honors: QB Quinton McCown
Newcomers Who Could Make An Impact: None Listed
Coach's General Outlook: Despite just a few returning starters, we have a strong tradition and should be competitive.
Other Teams To Watch From The Area (listed by coach): Central Catholic (Modesto)
All-league level players with GPAs above 3.50: QB Quinton McCown
CalHiSports.com Comments: When last we saw the Yellowjackets they were whooping it up after their 17-6 upset win over Central Catholic in Sac-Joaquin Section Div. V final. McCown should be one of the top QBs in the southern part of the section, but so much of the rest of the team is gone that repeating seems a very remote possibility. Not just Central, but Escalon, Modesto Christian and others should be stronger this year.
