Girls of Summer: 2009 Final California Report

August 24, 2009 3:03 PM

Mater Dei's Mosqueda-Lewis tops the list of 234 players who scored better than 9.00 in our in-person evaluation system. Six other Monarchs also are on the list. San Clemente's Cassie Harberts and Oak Ridge's Sara James both among the top 10 in the state as well.

By Harold Abend, Special to CalHiSports.com

For the fifth straight year, the CalHiSports.com caravan hit the road and logged almost 10,000 miles in evaluating girls basketball players over two-plus months of summer events.

Once again, the journey started and ended with events close to home in the Bay Area.

The first stop was the Battle of the Best Showdown at Oakland's Laney College in June and the final stop was the Back to School Shootout, August 14-16 at Dougherty Valley High in San Ramon.

In between, there was a home event in the Redwood Empire before we hit the road for all of the major gatherings held during the NCAA viewing period.

That trip started with an extended stay in San Diego, interrupted by a three-day stint in Orange County in between. It was then on to Las Vegas for a week where the girls caravan even assisted Vegas roommate and ESPN RISE CalHiSports.com managing editor Ronnie Flores by covering the boys final at the Main Event. The long road trip ended with a short 100-mile commute each way to Redwood City.

In all, over 5,000 girls participated at these events attended by CalHiSports.com. Of those, almost 1,000 of the top performers were evaluated to come up with the following list of 234 top performers, the most ever to qualify. Girls from outside California have been eliminated even though quite a few were evaluated and their names appeared in previous Girls of Summer blogs.

For new readers and a reminder to old ones, here's a brief summary of the criteria for the system used over the five years of the Girls of Summer feature.

The main factor of the criteria is that only those players that were personally seen are included in the list. There are instances in which college coaches' input was used to assist when only limited action was witnessed. Some live action had to be seen, however, for a player to be included in these lists.

As a result, these lists do not represent the entire scope of girls hoops, but you'll have to search forever to find a more all-inclusive list for the state.

Evaluation points are based on a dot system of four grading periods per player, regardless of how many or how few times a particular player is seen in action.

A perfect score would be four dots per game or a total of 16 points. Anyone who can average two-and-a-quarter points per grading period or nine points has done a pretty good job in the areas of evaluation and qualifies for the list.

The evaluation areas consist of speed and quickness with and without the ball; passing abilities; converting makeable shots and layups consistently; ability to pull up and hit shots, including the trey; range of shooting; free-throw shooting; defensive intensity, body positioning and footwork on defense; stamina and endurance; left and right hand abilities to shoot and dribble; blocking out and rebounding; attitude and demeanor; teamwork; performing in the clutch; level of competition – plus more.

Last year, four players tied atop the list with a ranking of 14.50. They were 2009 Ms. Basketball State Player of the Year Layshia Clarendon from Cajon (San Bernardino) and entering Cal, Christina Marinacci from Foothill (Santa Ana) and going to USC, Tierra Rogers (Sacred Heart Cathedral, San Francisco) and also going to Cal, and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (2011) from Mater Dei of Santa Ana.

In 2007, Jasmine Dixon of Long Beach Poly was the top ranked girl with a 15.25 score.

In 2006, Jeanette Pohlen of Brea Olinda (Brea) and now at Stanford and Vickie Baugh (Sacramento) and currently at Tennessee were tied with a 14.50 rating.

Not surprisingly, this year's list is topped by Mosqueda-Lewis, but the other players near the top have moved up from last year's list after looking much better with a year to improve.

There are also some fresh young faces and even a couple of middle-schoolers.

As for the 6-0 incoming junior from Santa Ana and the ESPNU Hoopgurlz No. 2 ranked player in the class of 2011, she literally took over games without even breaking a sweat.

We weren't able to see Mosqueda-Lewis, Chelsea Gray (2010, St. Mary's of Stockton) or 6-4 post phenom Aly Beebe (2012, St. Joseph of Santa Maria) in action on the national circuit, but even Mosqueda-Lewis' limited performances during the "dark period” at the San Diego Classic were enough to earn her the top spot and an improvement over last year's ranking.

In addition to Gray and Beebe not being on the list because they weren't seen, it also stands out that no players from traditional power Archbishop Mitty of San Jose are mentioned, either. This is due to the Monarchs playing together as a group in the summer instead of having girls on various club teams. It just so happened that in the two events in which the caravan attended that included the Mitty team, the Monarchs lost early both times and we unfortunately did not see them. We're fairly certain that 6-3 senior Liz Gordon and 5-7 junior Ashley Watson would be on the lists below if we'd seen them play.

As the skill level in girls basketball continues to improve each year, more California girls then ever cracked the magic 14.00 mark for their summer performances witnessed by CalHiSports.com. The 10 this year was four more than the six in 2008.

In addition to Mosqueda-Lewis, who still has another year to go to lead the Monarchs, others who scored the best from their respective classes were Cassie Harberts of San Clemente (2010), Jordan Adams of Mater Dei (2012), Chrishae Rowe from Santiago of Corona (2013) and Kristen Simon from Prairie Middle School of Gardena (2014).
