The fearsome foursome put into the spotlight for today's installment of this series are Oceanside, Bishop O'Dowd of Oakland, Twentynine Palms and Napa. All four teams played at least 12 games last season, one of them played 14 while one of them perhaps should have played a 14th game. Check back every day to see which schools are featured.
Note: A coach or representative of the school should email or fax in a questionnaire in order for that school's team to be included in this feature. You can CLICK HERE to print out a questionnaire or make a photo copy of the one printed in the back of the seventh edition of the ESPN RISE CalHiSports.com Record Book and Almanac we sent to schools last March. If you can't print a questionnaire, review the categories below and simply fill in the blanks. We will add our own comments and analysis. Please fax completed questionnaire to (209) 463-1219 or email info to mark@studentsports.com.
Team Name: Oceanside
Head Coach: John Carroll (179-63-5, 183-89-5 overall)
Last Year's Records: 12-0-1, 8-2 for J.V.
Returning Starters: 14 (7 offense, 7 defense)
Players Most Deserving of Preseason Honors: OL-DL Thomas Molesi, DB Jerry Whitaker, RB-LB Jake Fely, RB Rene Siluano, WR King Holder
Newcomers Who Could Make An Impact: None Listed
Coach's General Outlook: Who will play quarterback is a concern right now along with our depth but we do have some excellent returners who are skilled especially along the line.
Other Teams To Watch From The Area (listed by coach): Vista, Mira Mesa (San Diego), Eastlake (Chula Vista), Helix (La Mesa)
All-league level players with GPAs above 3.50: None Listed
CalHiSports.com Comments: After winning the CIF Div. II state bowl game in 2007, the Pirates were denied an opportunity for a possible repeat when Cathedral Catholic (also unbeaten and also from the San Diego Section) was chosen to represent the south instead. This year's team will miss graduated quarterback Jordan Wynn, but there's so much strength returning throughout the rest of the lineup that it should be another very strong season. Two players already have committed to the Pac 10 as the 6-2, 280-pound Molesi has picked Oregon State while crafty WR-DB Whitaker is headed to Arizona. Holder also has already committed as he's bound for San Diego State. Siluano, who rushed for 800 yards and 10 TDs, is the team's top offensive returnee.
Team Name: Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland)
Head Coach: Paul Perenon (205-69-1 overall record)
Last Year's Records: 10-2, 8-2 for J.V.
Returning Starters: 13 (6 offense, 7 defense)
Players Most Deserving of Preseason Honors: RB/DB Mario Brown, OG/DL Alex Beglinger, TE/DE Chad Washington
Newcomers Who Could Make An Impact: Hardy Nickerson Jr.
Coach's General Outlook: We should be strong on both sides of the ball but we do have some questions with our secondary.
Other Teams To Watch From The Area (listed by coach): San Leandro
All-league level players with GPAs above 3.50: TE/DE Chad Washington and QB Matt Balich
CalHiSports.com Comments: We have to say we were disappointed to see Chris Martin from last year's team transfer out to The Hun School in New Jersey. As a sophomore, Martin was thought by some to be among the top two or three prospects from the Class of 2010 in the state. While he seemed to slip a bit as a junior he is still a promising talent. Even without him, the Dragons should be closer or better than San Leandro in the Hayward Area Athletic League this season. Brown headlines a group of 13 returning starters. He rushed for 1,740 yards and scored 22 times as a junior and was a standout on defense with five interceptions. If Matt Balich improves at quarterback and Hardy Nickerson Jr. makes the type of impact one might expect, then O'Dowd could have one of its top teams in recent years.
Team Name: Twentynine Palms
Head Coach: Ernest Martinez (78-75-3)
Last Year's Records: 10-4, 9-1 for J.V.
Returning Starters: 10 (5 offense, 5 defense)
Players Most Deserving of Preseason Honors: MLB Rob Caldwell (All-CIF Southern Section) and LB Austin Cole (All-CIFSS)
Newcomers Who Could Make An Impact: Chris Fui-Fui
Coach's General Outlook: It's nice to return so many good starters, including QB Aaron Anderson, but the loss of five All-CIFSS players from last year will hurt.
Other Teams To Watch From The Area (listed by coach): St. Margaret's (SJ Capistrano) and Big Bear (Big Bear Lake)
All-league level players with GPAs above 3.50: QB Aaron Anderson and LB Austin Cole
CalHiSports.com Comments: The Wildcats lost in the CIFSS East Valley final to St. Margaret's and have the ingredients to be just as strong this season. The biggest hurdle to overcome is losing the dynamic skills of WR-DB Montreal Harris, one of the state's top multi-sport athletes the past two years. If you like your team to have experience at the QB and LB positions, then this is the team for you. Anderson will need to cut down on his picks, but comes back with 1,538 yards of passing. Both Caldwell and Cole had more than 130 tackles as juniors and should relish in shutting down the opposition running game.
Team Name: Napa
Head Coach: Troy Mott (32-6 overall)
Last Year's Records: 10-2, 6-4 for J.V.
Returning Starters: 4 (2 offense, 2 defense)
Players Most Deserving of Preseason Honors: QB-DB Charles Boyett (all-league), RB-LB Logan Hess (all-state underclass), LB Juan Martinez
Newcomers Who Could Make An Impact: None Listed
Coach's General Outlook: It's hard to say how good we will be this year as we are very inexperienced, especially along both sides of the line.
Other Teams To Watch From The Area (listed by coach): Vacaville
All-league level players with GPAs above 3.50: QB-DB Charles Boyett and RB-LB Logan Hess
CalHiSports.com Comments: Boyett, who rushed for 988 yards and 14 TDs a year ago, is the younger brother of 2007 standout John Boyett, who led the Indians to the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I title. Hess will try to perhaps duplicate the rushing accomplishments of 2007 standout Jake Croxdale. He piled up 1,408 yards and 20 TDs as a sophomore. That Napa team two years ago, though, was more than just those two players and was strong on both sides of the line. This Napa team may be hard-pressed to repeat going 5-0 once again in the Monticello Empire League. We wouldn't be surprised if the Indians did, but it looks less likely.
