To inquire about a section or state record, please email Senior Editor Ronnie Flores at ronnie@studentsports.com or call (800) 660-1334 Ext. 4414; For games played Sept. 11-13; Writeups by Ronnie Flores, Harold Abend, Paul Muyskens, Tom Shanahan, & Mark Tennis)

Dan Ando (Pioneer Valley, Santa Maria): Turned the game around in the second half as he scored on runs of 15,67, and 50 yards, all in the third quarter, to turn a 19-7 deficit into a 34-19 win over Nordhoff of Ojai. Ando finished the game with four touchdowns and 220 yards rushing.

Jeff Badger (Cardinal Newman, Santa Rosa): Senior running back/linebacker turned in a heroic performance in a 38-20 come from behind Newman home victory over Central Catholic of Modesto. Badger took the third quarter opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown that cut the Cardinals deficit to 14-10 and turned the momentum in Newman's favor. Then after shaking off dehydration and vomiting on the sidelines, he took it up the gut 10-yards for a score and subsequently picked off a pass and returned it 36-yards for his third touchdown. Badger's statistical totals were 114 yards rushing on 10 carries, 151 return yards, and eight tackles on defense. His efforts earned him the San Francisco Chronicle Metro Athlete of the Week.

Nico Barbone (San Dimas): Totaled 248 yards rushing on 23 carries in a big CIFSS Mid-Valley Division clash with South El Monte. His ground work, not to mention hitting pay dirt five times, led his team to a resounding 56-33 victory. In all, San Dimas gained 406 yards on the ground and 26 first downs.

Ben Bowen (Mt. Whitney, Visalia): All-everything back for the Pioneers was the star in 53-7 win over Tulare Western. Bowen rushed for 208 yards on 19 carries with two receptions for 71 yards. He scored four touchdowns on runs of 58, 20 and 3 yards and on a 50-yard pass reception.

James Boyd (Jordan, Los Angeles): He's one of the most unique athletes in California and his versatility makes him a prime all-state candidate. It was a tough 9-8 loss for Jordan last week, but Boyd nearly single-handily kept the Bulldogs in the game and made up for the lack of bodies. As a quarterback, the USC recruit completed 18 of 30 passes for 235 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown passes to junior Deshawn Beck. Beck, the Eastern League offensive player of the year as a sophomore, finished with 11 receptions for 157 yards. Boyd, who was the L.A. City Section's lineman of the year as a junior, also collected 15 tackles, nine solo and had a sack. He also caused two fumbles, including one inside the five-yard line that the Bulldogs recovered and during one play actually ripped the ball from a ballcarrier, but the referee ruled the runner down. Did we also mention Boyd plays on the basketball team?

Jonathon Brown (Encinal, Alameda): This dual threat signal caller was responsible for four touchdowns in Encinal's 35-6 rout of El Cerrito. Brown had 118 yards on the ground on just four carries, scoring on touchdown runs of 46 and 15. He also threw for 96 yards on just four completions with two going for TD's of 27 and 46 yards.

C.J. Castro (Del Campo, Fair Oaks): Found himself a comfortable spot in Franklin of Stockton's backfield as he had four sacks in a 44-6 Cougars' win. A huge crowd was on hand to witness Castro's performance as Del Campo played in its first on-campus game under the Friday Night Lights.

Max Charlot (Santiago, Corona): The outcome of the Sharks game with La Quinta was in little doubt as they defeated this visitors, 50-13. Charlot did his part by setting a school record with a 105-yard interception return for a TD. Only eight reported interception returns have been longer, with the last 106-yard interception return occurring in 1997 by Canyon of Anaheim's Jermaine Montgomery in a game versus El Modena of Orange.

Depay Celestine (Tracy): Helped the local fans celebrate the naming of Wayne Schneider Field with a big game in a wild 55-48 victory for the Bulldogs over Los Banos. Celestine carried seven times for 115 yards and one TD, caught two passes for 63 yards and one TD and returned a kickoff 85 yards for another score.

Demario Coleman (Oceanside): The sophomore receiver stole some thunder from San Diego State recruit Nicholas Osmond for the second straight game as he led the Pirates in receiving during a 34-12 win over cross-town rival El Camino in the City Championship game. He had five catches for 156 yards and two touchdown receptions of 60 and 35 yards.

Christian Cruz (Tranquility): In a 33-0 triumph over Kings Christian of Lemoore, Cruz kicked two field goals, one from 57 yards out and the other from 48 yards away. Teammate Beto Solorio also scored on a 70-yard interception return.

Robert Cruz (Magnolia, Anaheim): With his team trailing cross-town Katella 14-0, he got Magnolia right back in the game with a 67-yard touchdown run. He wasn't finished as he romped to six rushing touchdowns and finished with 343 yards on the ground in his team's 58-21 victory.

Kevin Cummings (Crespi, Encino): Had a great all-around performance as the
nationally-ranked Celts blanked Birmingham of Lake Balboa, 31-0. He recovered a fumble in the second quarter to end a Patriots' drive. On the ensuing drive, he caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Bryan Bennett that gave Crespi a 15-0 halftime advantage. On the Patriots' first drive of the second half, he dug the stake in quite deeper by intercepting a pass.

Danny Diekroeger (Menlo School, Atherton): This 6-1, 176-pound quarterback is one of the big reasons the Knights are 2-0 so far this season. Last week in a 39-14 win against East Nicolaus of Nicolaus, the sophomore signal caller passed for 322 yards on 17-of-33 attempts with four touchdowns.

Davon Dunn (Lincoln, San Diego): Dunn returned two punts for touchdowns and  scored a third TD on a 40-yard run in Lincoln's 69-0 season-opening victory over Crawford of San Diego. Dunn punt returns measured 80 and 50 yards.

Clark Evans (Los Alamitos): One of the top dual-threat QB's in the state, Evans opened up his season by passing for 154 yards and rushing for 131 yards on 15 carries in a 24-3 victory over Mayfair of Lakewood. He scored the state-ranked Griffins first touchdown on the ground as Los Al dominated up front all night long.

Robert Fernandez (Brookside Christian, Stockton): Just a freshman, Fernandez celebrated his first game with 19 carries for 235 yards and three TDs in a 30-24 victory vs. Foresthill.

Johnathan Fleeks (Desert Hot Springs): The second half was his time to shine as he rushed for 223 of his 246 yards after intermission to rally the Golden Eagles from a 18-0 deficit to a 25-24 win. Fleeks scored three third-quarter touchdowns and then a final touchdown in the final minute to tie the game before a game-winning conversion.

Bryce Flowers (Pittsburg): Flowers, a solidly built 5-10, 195-pound running back, finished with 205 total yards and three second half touchdowns, winning the overall battle with SHC's Desarte Yarnway in Pittsburg's 32-21 come from behind intersectional victory over the Irish at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco. Flowers rushed for 122 yards on 17 carries and caught three passes for 83 yards. Yarnway finished with 125 yards on 19 carries but was unable to find the end zone.

Tyler Gaffney (Cathedral Catholic, San Diego):
The 6-foot, 215-pound senior running back scored five touchdowns as the Dons beat Pont Loma, 42-10, in a rematch of last year's San Diego Section Division III championship game.  Gaffney had 263 yards total offense as he carried 20 times for 186 yards and caught three passes for 77 yards. His four touchdowns rushing were 4, 8, 1 and 13 yards and his touchdown reception was from 47 yards out.

Marcus Galan (El Rancho, Rico Rivera): Lugged the leather 21 times for 258 yards and two touchdowns during a 49-13 win over Cerritos. Teammate Marcus Aldecoa added 168 yards rushing and three scored for an El Rancho squad that gained 461 yards on the ground.

Jose Garay (South El Monte): Did all he could to keep his team in the game against San Dimas as he passed for 96 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 210 yards and two touchdowns. It wasn't enough to prevent the Eagles from losing by a 56-33 score.

Hector Gomez & Ryan Yriarte (Dos Palos): Gomez caught nine passes for 251 yards while Yriarte had 14 completions passing for 336 yards and two TDs in a 38-34 loss to Kingsburg.

Zach Graves (Whitney, Rocklin): Showed he could do more than just rush the ball, which he did for 150 yards and three touchdowns, as he caught two passes for 64 yards and a touchdown. For good measure, he threw a ten-yard pass for a score.

Garry Hedlund & Will Jefferson (Vista del Lago, Moreno Valley): This pass-catch combo was connecting through the air like it was a handoff as each set school records in Vista del Lago's 36-20 win over Perris. Hedlund passed for 386 yards connecting with Jefferson for 231 of those yards and two touchdowns.

Christian Hernandez (Marshall, Los Angeles): Was simply on fire during a 56-20 road victory over University of Los Angeles, as he completed 20 of 21 passes for 285 yards. He also tossed seven touchdown passes to set a school record. Only three reported signal-callers in L.A. City Section history have thrown eight or more in a game. Five of his touchdown receptions were snagged by Carlos Portillo, who finished with seven catches for 141 yards. No report is his only incompletion was off any receiver's hands, a mix-up in routes, a throw-away under heavy pressure or simply a misfire.

Nathan Hinke (Foothill, Pleasanton): The senior receiver had eight catches for 225 yards and four TDs against CIF Div. II state runner-up Novato in an impressive 48-6 win. Foothill QB Sean Mannion also was 13 of 19 for 275 yards and all four scores. The Knights were playing their season-opener with longtime head coach Matt Sweeney once again on the sidelines. He is now officially listed as co-head coach.

Dozie Iwuagwu (Clayton Valley, Concord): Though the senior did not score a touchdown, he ran for eight of his team's 20 first downs and the set the table for two of the Eagles' three touchdowns, finishing with 185 yards on 28 carries.

Stefphon Jefferson (El Diamante, Visalia): Had a night to remember has he rushed for a career high of 296 yards on 34 carries and scored five touchdowns (22, 38, 4, 6 and 4 yards) as the Miners beat West of Bakersfield, 34-14. Don't go penciling in Edison of Fresno quite yet as the Central Section Div. II champion.

Jamie Jensen & Dante Fullard (Gilroy): After shaking off the jitters early on when he was only 3-of-9 with two picks to start the game, Jensen ended up connecting on 11-of-19 attempts for 268 yards and three touchdowns of 58, 46, and 59 yards before giving way to junior quarterback Nick Marra in a season opening 62-13 blowout of Mitty of San Jose.  Fullard finished with six catches for 171 yards and three scores; enough to garner him the San Jose Mercury News Athlete of the Week.

De'mon Jones & Antonio Olgilvie (Washington, San Francisco): In coach Karl Finley's toss offense these two running backs got most of the 377 rushing yards the Eagles rolled up in a 42-27 season-opening win over visiting El Camino of South San Francisco. Jones carried 13 times for 163 yards and two touchdowns, including a 61-yard fourth quarter scamper to seal the win. Olgilvie added 106 yards and also found the end zone twice.

Fred Jones (Stallworth Academy, Stockton): One of the seven former Franklin High players who have transferred to this charter school (previously known as Samuel Hancock Christian and a fishy situation to us), Jones rushed 14 times for 274 yards and three TDs in a 61-34 win over Piedmont. Jones, a junior, also took a kickoff return 96 yards for another score.

Keith Lawson (Beckman, Irvine): Was apart of a stellar backfield tandem, along with Tyler Sackman, that dominated all game in the Patriots' 35-0 victory over Costa Mesa. He finished as the game's leading ball carrier with 248 yards and three touchdowns.

Cameron Loeffler (Exeter): Had a big night against Woodlake in team's 33-7 win as he rushed for 252 yards on 27 carries and scored four touchdowns.

Cameron Marshall (Valley Christian, San Jose): For the second week in a row, Marshall took center stage in a Warriors' victory, dominating on both sides of the ball in a 35-21 road win at San Leandro. He was instrumental in VC running off 35 unanswered points. The 5-foot-10, 205-pound running back and defensive back, accounted for four of the Warriors' touchdowns, rushing for three and returning an interception 27 yards for his final score. On the ground Marshall gained 161 yards on only 11 carries, scoring on runs of 11, 53 and 2 yards, and punishing tacklers in the process. He added nine tackles on defense.

Jake McKinney (Maranatha Christian, San Diego): Accounted for five touchdowns in various fashion in a 46-0 win over Calvary Christian. He rushed for a 39-yard touchdown, intercepted a pass and returned it 66 yards for the score, returned a punt 79 yards and also threw two touchdowns passes.

Carlos Mendez (Estancia, Costa Mesa): Helped break in a brand new $9.5 million stadium by scoring the first touchdown at the new field. He finished with 236 yards rushing on 21 carries in the Eagles' 41-26 victory over Bolsa Grande of Garden Grove.

Jose Mendez (Fowler): Piled up 237 yards on 20 carries and scored three touchdowns, including one on a 31-yard pass reception, as the Redcats blanked Firebaugh, 35-0.

Vince Moraga (Pacifica, Oxnard): Rushed for 134 yards and four touchdowns on just 11 carries while passing for 123 yards and a touchdown in the Tritons' 35-21 road victory over Templeton.

John Murayama (St. Margaret's, San Juan Capistrano): Hard to start a senior season better as he rushed for 154 yards and found the end zone five times in the Tartans' 69-0 win over Mammoth. Murayama helped St. Margaret's run its winning-streak to 29 games.

Adrian Pacheco (Selma): Senior standout rushed for 341 yards, 291 coming in the second half, on 35 carries and scored three touchdowns on runs of 97, 2, and 7 yards as Bears beat Reedley, 28-21.

Sean Parker (Narbonne, Harbor City): He returned an interception 95 yards for a score during a 34-13 intersectional victory over Inglewood. That dazzling defensive play make the score 21-6 and his 45-yard interception in the fourth quarter sealed the deal. He also scored on that enemy pick, too. His secondary teammate Byron Moore also did a good job on Inglewood all-state level WR Shaq Evans, limiting him to two catches. Moore also caught five passes for 57 yards.

Jason Perez (Reseda): Accounted for five touchdowns in Reseda's 50-20 victory over North Hollywood. He tossed for touchdowns while completing 14 of 19 passes for 224 yards. He added a 48-yard scamper on the ground that gave the Regents an early 20-0 lead. Tailback Trevion Johnson also did damage, rushing for 265 yards on 29 carries with two touchdowns.

Nick Ricciardulli (Poway): The senior running back was a workhorse, but it wasn't enough for Poway to extend its 13-game wining streaks as the Titans fell to Santa Margarita, 42-20. He carried 32 times for 236 yards with touchdowns of 3 and 10 yards.

Jose Rivas (South Gate): The Rams are coming off a 0-10 season so its must have felt nice to open the season with a 63-0 win over new school Bernstein of Los Angeles. In that game Rivas rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns, but it's nice to know the Rams weren't trying to rub it in as Rivas only carries the ball six times. One of his scores came from 59 yards out.

Ryan Rodriguez (Freedom, Oakley): For the second straight week Rodriguez, the reported passing leader in the NCS, led the Falcons to a road victory. Two weeks ago he passed for 252 yards and two touchdowns in a 28-3 win at Amador Valley of Pleasanton. This past week at Castro Valley he completed 15-of-27 passes for 315 yards and two touchdowns. Rodriguez also ran for a touchdown and gained 64 yards rushing.

Jose Rueles (Firebaugh, Lynwood): This new school got routed in its first game 58-7 against Hemet of West Valley, so it's good to see them playing better in the second go-around. A main factor in that improvement was Rueles, who rushed for 274 yards on 34 carries. He also scored three times, but Firebaugh still fell, 29-26 to Bassett of La Puente.

Joshua Shaw (Palmdale): Gave a great all-around effort as the Falcons snapped a 12-game losing streak against traditional power Hart of Newhall with a 29-6 victory. As an emergency QB that came in after the starter was cramping, Shaw scrambled for a 39-yard touchdown. He also scored Palmdale's first TD when he fell on a fumble in the endzone. He actually recovered two fumbles in Palmdale's big win.

Michael Santini (Leland, San Jose): For the second week in a row, this senior linebacker, the reported tackling leader in the CCS registered double digits in tackles. Two weeks ago in a 28-28 tie with Prospect (Saratoga), he had 13 tackles, a pass interception and a quarterback sack. This past week he registered 18 tackles and a sack but it wasn't enough as his team fell 10-7 to Scott's Valley.

Marquis Simmons (Dominguez, Compton): The Dons lost an intersectional showdown against Edison of Fresno on the road, but it wasn't the fault of their defense. Simmons, an all-american candidate at linebacker, led the way with 12 tackles and two sacks as Dominguez held Edison to 60 yards of total offense. The main problem was discipline and playing without starting QB Aaron Williams, who was out with a bad ankle. A dozen penalties for 99 yards didn't help matters, either.

Bryan Trujillo (Eagle Rock): Helped The Rock record a 10-18 non-league victory over Canoga Park by playing well from his position in the defensive secondary. He racked up 10 solo tackles and came up with two interceptions to help his team to victory.

Aaron Turner (Santa Fe, Santa Fe Springs): Talented back carried the ball 19 times for 275 yards in a 40-14 victory over Warren of Downey. Turner also hit pay dirt five times in the easy win.

Silver Vaifanua (Millikan, Long Beach): Paced the Rams' 45-27 victory over Bellflower as he returned two interceptions for touchdowns. He added a third touchdown on a kickoff return for good measure.

Cougar Williams (Hanford): A grid-hoop standout, Williams had 13 receptions for 132 yards and one TD as Hanford opened up with 30-0 romp past Monache of Porterville. QB Bryan Furtado also completed 23 of 26 passes for 187 yards and two scores.
