Don't expect a fast resolution to Merriman's plight

There is a new development regarding Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman's knee that will likely delay the decision on whether he plays this season.

The San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting that Merriman said he has torn lateral collateral and posterior cruciate ligaments in his left knee. Merriman is expected to see more specialists next week. Chargers coach Norv Turner is still confident that Merriman will be able to play when the season starts Sept. 7 against visiting Carolina.

Expect this situation to drag on for several days.

Merriman's three options appear to be: living with the pain, having minor surgery to alleviate the pain or having reconstructive surgery. The third option would end the Pro Bowler's season. Because of the dramatic consequences, expect both Merriman and the team to investigate every option exhaustively before making a final call.

Again, don't expect a fast resolution to this issue. The decision will probably preoccupy the Chargers next week before the team fully begins preparing for the Panthers.
